WHERE IS DONNA LASS? [PART 2]

9/8/2019

Here we will take a further look at the disappearance of Donna Lass from the Sahara Tahoe Hotel & Casino on September 6th 1970, attempting to discover the approximate area she was disposed of or buried. The last article on this subject pinpointed an area along California State Route 89 by Pole Creek Trailhead. The Zodiac Killer (if responsible for her murder) had previously made two phone calls to police, directing them to the crime scenes at Blue Rock Springs Park and Lake Berryessa. When the Pines Card was mailed on March 22nd 1971 it held directions within its design, such as "Sierra Club", "pass Lake Tahoe areas" and a punch-hole on the right side. The postcard was mailed to the San Francisco Chronicle and was addressing the police.

Here is a snippet from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department website: "The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) was formed July 1, 1967. The first home of the department was on the southwest corner of Lake Tahoe Boulevard at “D” Street. This is currently the present location of the City Corp. Yard. By the spring of 1969, SLTPD had 33 officers, seven civilian positions, and nine vehicles. We needed a bigger facility. So during the tenure of John Crow, the second Chief of Police at the helm of SLTPD, the Police Department moved to a month-to-month rental facility at Fremont Avenue and Mono Way. This structure is now the home of Nel’s Hardware store. This building was not constructed as a police facility, and eventually another move was needed. In April of 1973, the department moved to its current location in the El Dorado County Government Center, on Johnson Boulevard".
All three of these locations sit under the south side of the lake, so the instructions on the Pines Card to "pass Lake Tahoe areas" can only mean one of two things - the police needed to travel along the east side of the lake using US Route 50, towards Incline Village (the area depicted on the Pines Card), or travel along the west side of the lake, towards the Donner Memorial State Park and the Sierra Club at Clair Tappaan Lodge (also depicted on the Pines Card). See below.

Picture
If the killer was living or vacationing on the south side of the lake, then he may very well have crossed paths with his target at the Sahara Tahoe Hotel & Casino, the Monte Verdi Apartments at 3893 Pioneer Trail (where Donna Lass lived), or somewhere close by. Whether he murdered Donna Lass first, then disposed of her body, or murdered her at the location he concealed her body, his most direct and convenient route of travel from the south side of the lake, is to "pass the Lake Tahoe areas" on the east or west side, via a major route. California State Route 89 and US Route 50 both skirt the lake on either side, and more importantly, head towards Incline Village and the Sierra Club at Clair Tappaan Lodge.

A newspaper article stated that 'the site depicted on the 'Pines Card' was from an advertisement published last Sunday by several newspapers. It was an artist's rendition of houses among the trees at a Boise Cascade Company project at Incline Village, where construction has just begun on the development. While much of the Sierra area is under several feet of snow, Incline Village has only two feet on the ground. Police went to the area to determine if a search is possible'. Chief Lauritzen added "There's no point to a search at this time. It's unlikely a victim would be uncovered before spring". This indicates that a search was to be initiated in this area, but it clearly failed to unearth the remains of Donna Lass. Parking your vehicle in the area of Incline Village under construction doesn't seem the most sensible choice to start digging a grave. When we consider that the July 13th 1971 Monticello Card revealed the name "Kathy" at the Oak Hill Memorial Park, and the Pines Card overlayed over the Sierra Club of Clair Tappaan Lodge revealed the name "Donna" (at the Donner Memorial State Park), it seems as though the Incline Village advertisement was used more as a template, rather than the actual burial site. The act of the Zodiac Killer adding "Sierra Club" to the postcard was clearly significant in this instance.

Using a sprinkling of geographic profiling and the words on the Pines Card, the Zodiac Killer would be "past the Lake Tahoe areas" at Tahoe City, where California State Route 89 breaks away from the lake. He now has to effectively bury Donna Lass between Tahoe City and the Donner Memorial State Park by Truckee. Is he going to risk performing this task by Alpine Meadows or Olympic Valley?, or travel to the much more secluded area by Pole Creek Trailhead, which is exactly mid-distance between Tahoe City and the Donner Memorial State Park - this is the first and logical choice to avoid detection. There are some other turn off areas in this region of California State Route 89 where the Zodiac Killer could have disposed of a body, but mid-distance in a secluded area and sitting under his crosshairs on the Pines Card overlay, seems as good as any.

Additional information: Clifton Calvez, a retired Air Force colonel thought he knew where the body of Donna Lass may be found, employing the unusual approach of satellite imagery, before venturing to the area to put his theory to the test. He entered the Lake Tahoe region via Highway 89, however due to a fire in the region was abruptly halted at Emerald Bay, so proceeded another way around the lake to eventually arrive at his predetermined destination of Antelope Way, when he received that eureka moment.
Placing a line through Antelope Way to the Rubicon Peaks summit, it bisected the trees [peek through the pines]. When he progressed into the woods, he found two trees had been carved into. One depicted a baboon, the other a satyr. He took photographs of the area where he believed Donna Lass' burial site could possibly be located, although after a thorough excavation of the site no remains were found. A second location was identified, but again he came up empty handed. Nevertheless he is still of the opinion that the body of Donna Lass is located somewhere in this region and remains optimistic of a resolution some day.

I do not think Donna Lass is a Zodiac victim. If he did it....he was frustratingly vague about it. I want to giggle regarding my proceeding understatement sentence of the year.

Is Donna Lass dead or alive?

Sorry for the following Tangent....On another topic you might want to cover if you have not.

It has been stated many times the Zodiac Watch is the only place one can find the name Zodiac and the cross-haired symbol.

Another place you can find the "Gun Sight" as it is called by car enthusiasts and the Zodiac name is on the front of the 1967 Ford Zodiac MK4 car. (picture at link)

https://ibb.co/K0MVpv8

It is interesting that the my name cipher has 13 symbols with a M and K symmetrically in the middle. One of letters said cars would make great killing machines.

Very true regarding this vehicle Shawn, and unless I can find more, like you, believe Zodiac an unlikely perpetrator of this crime. The only thing I can't wrap my head around, is why create a punch-hole, along with the purpose exhibited in the pasted text, when it actually leads to nothing. I cannot help thinking he may have visited Lake Tahoe after her death was reported in the Chronicle and laid or placed something at a particular location (akin to the 13 stones found at Clair Tappaan Lodge or something pinned or inscribed on a tree), so if investigators followed his clues correctly they would at least find something, and in part, bolstering his suggestions of involvement in her disappearance. Of course, if the crosshairs on the postcard were not the location of a body or further clue, then the punch-hole may simply have been a game suggesting "Donner", as "Kathy" was suggested by the Oak Hill Memorial at Monticello. Zodiac liked to play games.

Richard - could this be Donna?

I see where you're coming from BB. The weight given is about 20lbs lighter and height 2 inches shorter than Donna, but age and hair color similar, along with location The appendectomy scar could be the determining factor. They had dentals for the unidentified woman, so my guess (with Donna being a nurse and likely visited the dentist) they could have compared and ruled her out in the Lass case. It's difficult to say however, what the police did or didn't do back in 1972. I too have checked some of these old cases for comparison - without luck. I believe there is a high probability she will be found somewhere around the lake, if ever.

BB
12/6/2019 01:29:29 pm

Richard -
Why does her body have to be found by the lake?
Just a wild idea. The Lake Tahoe area is prime real estate.
And we find that real estate value plummets when bodies are discovered there in.
Especially when it is a murder that can be linked to the Zodiac killer.
The Texas sleuth that so called cracked the code lead the History Channel team to the Donner Pass area. They had three separate cadaver dogs hit on the same spot proving that a human body had been there for long enough time for larvae to fully pupate. To at-least three months. The body then being moved further away as the Zodiac case gained in political importance. There are several unidentified bodies which could be Donna's. Or her body may never be found.

One of the lessons learned by the powerful - from the CJB murder and others were that these bodies needed to be relocated to areas further afield. Could bankers like Robert Hunter and others in the ruling class have seen that this was a problem solvable by simply relocating the bodies to areas that won't effect their bottom line. Could Donna Lass's remains have been moved from the Lake Tahoe area because it was bad for business? Eventually winding up as an unidentified body found near Elko Nevada? This Jane Doe was discovered several months after Donna Lass disappeared. I would not put it passed the rich and powerful. They employ the forces of darkness to do their bidding. The CIA is proven to meddled in media affairs and especially political and legal matters and everything else for that matter. Has the DNA of Donna Lass been put in CODIS? Peace

Richard
12/6/2019 01:51:59 pm

That code that the History Channel detectives followed was not created by the Zodiac Killer, it was created by Donna Lass' family on a reward poster and has nothing to do with directions to her grave site. The code had no directions, so the spot they identified from it has no basis in reality. That means any cadaver dogs triggered by that area, were triggered by something else - and couldn't have been triggered by any corpse, moved 47 years ago or otherwise.

You are correct BB, Donna Lass doesn't have to be buried by the lake - she could be in Placer County, or in fact anywhere for that matter. I only suggested by the lake because of the Pines card, but assuming that wasn't Zodiac, her body could be hundreds of miles away. My guess, is whoever murdered her, had vast wilderness surrounding the lake, so may likely be the optimal place for a quick and speedy deposition site. But yes, you never know.

Richard
12/6/2019 01:57:53 pm

When Donna Lass went missing DNA was 16 years in the making as a forensic tool, and CODIS was years later, so I highly doubt they have the DNA of Donna Lass. But they have her sisters.

The South Lake detective, Tom O' Conner, took blood samples from Lass' sister Mary Pilker and using identity cards once owned by Donna Lass, created a record of DNA to cross match any present unidentified remains, or ones discovered in the future. Detective Conner said "There is the possibility that her remains have already been found and entered into the data bank". He went on to add "If we get a match at least we'll know where she was found. Hopefully that would be some kind of closure for the family".

Hi Richard. I think you're spot on with these last two articles, or very close at least. He really didn't provide much to work on. There is one thing, and this might not make any sense to you, but since the phrase "around in the snow" is upside down, if you turn it over, the hole is now on the opposite corner from where it was right side up. Now you have four corners with an X formation from each corner. Where those lines intersect, where does that put you on the map?

That's probably all wrong, but maybe worth a shot?

Richard
9/9/2019 01:20:03 am

Somewhere south east of Mt Linvoln I believe. The notion of flipping the card does make sense, because this phrase is suggestive of a burial location. I did consider it once a play on words "a round in the snow", ie: a bullet or casing. Indicating her manner of death.

JD
9/8/2019 10:22:08 pm

Just looking at the card, drawn at an angle, I think the line from the Sierra Club downward would meet up around the dot on the letter "i" in victim, where one would need the other hole.

JD
9/9/2019 02:20:57 am

I'm not too familiar with Mt. Lincoln, but doing some searching. Granted, this may be going way off course with this. Mt. Lincoln is a place to go skiiing, the "lift rises to an elevation of 8,383 feet, overlooking historic Donner Pass -- has been inoperable since January 26 because of the heaviest snowfall to hit this High Sierra resort in its 29 year history." --12 Mar 1969 p 41 The Times.

Also this site:

http://elevation.maplogs.com/poi/mount_lincoln_mt_lincoln_california_usa.4003.html

Notice the photo of "Donner ablaze."

JD
9/9/2019 02:29:57 am

And if I want to read way too much into an Oakland Tribune article dated 3 Jan 1965, 26 yr old Molly Goodman and a man were walking around in snowshoes across the side of Mt Lincoln when she fell and started an avalanche. Her body was found buried under 8 feet of snow, jammed against a tree trunk, by rescuers. Sierra Club director Lewis F Clark took part in the search and stated that the Mt. Lincoln area is commonly called "Avalanche Bowl."

I like the suggestion of "firing a round." A good play on words.

JD
9/9/2019 02:35:34 am

Another article states Molly's companion was John Hurst, University of California Psychology Professor.

I think this was him: https://senate.universityofcalifornia.edu/in-memoriam/files/john-g-hurst.html

Now I'm getting way off track here. I'll see if I can come up with anything else.

JD
9/9/2019 05:20:13 pm

Getting off the beaten path again, I would like to propose a possible, if not probable, solution to the Red Phantom missive. This solution is found in Albany, California, which sits on the east shore of San Francisco Bay. In December 1947, William Keating began receiving "ominous sounding notes" delivered over his backyard fence via bamboo spears. The notes were signed "The Red Phantom." Unnerved by the note and spear combination, Mr. Keating contacted the police. After a note promising "more clues to follow," the culprit revealed himself by telling Mr. Keating to keep his cat away, and that he (the sender of the notes) was the neighbor with the skylark flag. Officer Dave Perkins followed up on this and found the culprit to be a 9 yr old neighbor boy who happened to fly a skylark flag from his loft. The boy was a pigeon fancier and didn't want his birds being threatened by Mr. Keating's cat.

Like the Zodiac, and probably so many others, this boy had his own alter ego, the Red Phantom. I can certainly see someone like this, assertive and confrontational, in adulthood, dusting off his former secret identity and signing off with it when writing a letter to the editor.

Richard
9/9/2019 09:55:06 pm

I have seen this on several Zodiac forums, including the MK Zodiac website here. http://mk-zodiac.com/TheSecretoftheRedPhantom.html
A budding young Zodiac was certainly influenced by comics and film in early childhood, so anything is possible.

A great story contributed,JD.

Are you able to tell us,where you found this [?].

Perhaps the greatest likelihood is,that the Zodiac read this story, and it inspired him [?].

JD
9/9/2019 08:02:42 pm

Thanks, Richard. It appeared on page 7 in the 29 Dec 1947 Tulare Advance-Register and on page 12 of the 29 Dec 1947 Valley Times (North Hollywood). Not sure if it appeared anywhere else, but one would think that it would have been in the San Francisco paper due to its location.

Maybe and inspiration, maybe just 2 different minds thinking alike, with one becoming a killer. I'm thinking that maybe the Zodiac was inspired by The Shadow. The Shadow pulp magazine was filled with bizarre villains and macabre tales. And, not only did The Shadow use codes, there was a dedicated page for an exchange of ciphers with the general public.

I found a Shadow pulp cover that coincidentally includes a plane, a circle pattern resembling (only somewhat, if you try not to think about it) a Zodiac symbol, and a Halloween card style eye. Here is the cover, listed on a Hip comic site, for only $130.00 to boot LOL

One,perhaps minor but interesting detail, has occurred to me,on the basis of that ''amazing'' little story.

About four years ago,I uncovered the ''unique'' derivation to the specific 8-ball symbol, employed in the ''My name is -----'' cipher....registered,under licence to a Ms.Helen Roper Brown.

Beyond reasonable doubt, the Zodiac could have only obtained this symbol, from Berkeley University Library,in the documents wing.

So,there are possibly indications now, that the Zodiac elected to read archive newspapers,in libraries....for both interest, and more importantly to the case,to gain inspiration, for feeding into his tangled correspondences....snippets that would be difficult to place, and trace.

Rubislaw 32 link
9/9/2019 10:15:59 pm

I have looked up on that late December 1947...and nothing absolutely specific,news-wise.

But,it was quite a busy period, for, what is now termed as ''The subsequent Nuremberg Trials''.So,it is always possible that it was this particular subject matter, that the Zodiac took an interest [?].

And found ''The Red Phantom''.

JD
9/9/2019 08:14:57 pm

Here is another from April 1945, the story "Death Has Grey Eyes." Note the disembodied eyes.

https://www.abebooks.com/magazines-periodicals/SHADOW-Pulp-Digest-Magazine-Death-Grey/8660598681/bd

And from the cover of "Treasures of Death," note how he is using the stamps for code, writing a single letter above each stamp:

https://thelivingshadow.fandom.com/wiki/Shadow_Magazine_Vol_1_44

There also was a "Double Z" case. Note this part of the story's description:

"Clearly, Double Z was a man of his word...a gamesman with a zest for killing and a homicidal sense of humor. But the only laughter these days was the eerie echo of THE SHADOW, master crimefighter on call for the most challenging case of his career."

Here is where you find that description:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2417095.Double_Z

There's probably much more, that could have been an influence, regarding the Shadow pulps and radio program.

Then again, maybe just coincidence?

JD
9/9/2019 08:22:02 pm

Just to add, that Double Z book is actually a book form of an old Shadow Pulp Story.

And the letters above the stamps in "Treasures of Death" form the following sentence: The Game is End-- or The game is ending?

Richard
9/9/2019 10:20:08 pm

Thanks for the additional information JD - I have never seen those comics before. The early 1940s influence for a 10 to 15-year-old would place Zodiac in the age range of middle 30s, early 40s in 1969, so it's this period of time that may be pertinent to the Zodiac story, such as 'A Game of Death' in 1945.

JD
9/9/2019 11:17:53 pm

I think I need to get my eyes checked...I said thanks to Richard when it was Rubislaw who had sent the message. Sorry Rubislaw. And, thank you.

I don't think Zodiac ever identified with the Red Phantom. I think the Marco letter was possibly that 9 yr old, in his early 30's, using an alias from his childhood so as not to have to use his real name when bashing someone. Zodiac probably was never even aware of that story, and yet somehow, for some reason, people began to mistakingly attribute this Marco letter to the Zodiac.

No problem, Richard. Actually, those aren't comics. They were adult publications that began in the 1930s. The ciphers sent to the publication by readers, to be printed for other readers, were quite complex at times, if the one from the issue I read is any indication. But they also did make Shadow comic books as well. Age wouldn't necessarily have to be a factor, though I believe the Zodiac was possibly even 50 during his crime spree. Anyone could have picked up a collection of old Shadow Magazine's at a rummage sale, used book store, etc. And the radio program would have been available in repeats, as they still are, long after their original run.

Rubislaw 32 link
9/10/2019 05:21:26 am

The only ''problem'' for me is [...which I state light-heartedly...],that I claim to have solved the riddle of the final part of the [presumed] Zodiac's '' Z263 '',contained within the ''two'' 1988 New Canaan Letters.

Naturally, the FBI's Cryptanalysis Unit have it.

The riddle's solution contains ''Zodiac'',''Red Phantom'',and ''Imperial Wizard''.

Of course many, who take an interest,in such matters, will think that I ''made this so''.Well...fair do's...but I must have spent about 20 times longer, believing the solution to be ''King of the Road'',in French....before ''stumbling'' upon the ''real'' solution.

''Time'' will only tell....if / when the ''authorities'' are able to arrest ''The Cipher Slayer'',himself.

And,one should bear in mind that, the FBI are going to have a pretty good idea of most of the cipher and cipher related solutions...when that time comes. So,they are not going to accept ''any old bull'' from the Zodiac...in terms of his own claims,on his own cryptographic solutions.

JD

Rubislaw, I did see that some time ago regarding the cattle brands. You inspired me to see what else could be found, and there was a zodiac style brand used by Norma and Robert Myers, variations on the FK, and what I thought was most substantial, the symbol used in the Bates letter was a brand used by G.W. and R.A. Phillips.

Rubislaw 32 link
9/10/2019 04:50:34 am

That's interesting,JD.

With regard to the Hallowen Card,specifically...I became particularly curious, about cattle brands,in general, and further research followed....including a number of U.S.State's registrations.

Fred Harmon's was only ''unique'' to the State of Colorado, for example. In each State, the potential licence holder can pay for a brand design, that is officially available...or pay extra, for their own design...after approval, from the national board.

At least,on what I was able to ascertain,Ms.Roper Brown's was a unique brand, probably designed by herself....and would have been the only one,in the whole of the USA.

Back to variation's on Fred Harman's....a whole section allocation, which to ranchers,is known as the '' V Brand ''.

The '' V Brand '' is universally known among ranchers,as tradiionally associated with....'' The Texas Longhorn ''.

JD
9/10/2019 02:05:33 am

Something I did not know: They made the Double Z story into a watered down comic book version in 1946. While I believe the Zodiac got his Berryessa costume idea from the newspaper clipping of the police armor, I couldn't help but notice the villain's outfit. Check this out:

https://thelivingshadow.fandom.com/wiki/Shadow_Comics_Vol_1_61

JD
9/10/2019 12:43:26 pm

I think you were definitely right about the cattle brand angle, Rubislaw. And maybe I'm wrong about the Red Phantom, especially if it was found in a cipher solution related to the Zodiac. Still, it certainly makes sense to me that someone who used the Red Phantom in notes as a kid would use it again as an adult. Who knows, maybe Zodiac did read the story after all.

Rubislaw 32 link
9/10/2019 03:51:30 pm

I might be misunderstanding you,JD.....but,from my perspective, you might be correct to have pointed out the December 1947 newspaper story, about the speared message.....as being the original source,of inspiration,to the Zodiac,in 1974....to use the term,Red Phantom,in the Marco letter.

I'm just pointing out,that I believe to have found a reference to ''Red Phantom'',in the 1988 New Canaan cipher riddle....which might ''confirm'' its use,having been made,in 1974....with possible ''conception'',from a newspaper article,December 29th 1947.

Ok....a few '' If's,but's and maybe's ''.....but do take heart,in what you have pointed out,as something potentially important,to the case.

Rubislaw 32 link
9/10/2019 04:07:11 pm

Yes...it does seem to me,the possibility of the Zodiac, using documents sections of libraries,''primarily'' for the purposes of reading newspaper archives.....then,having a ''sniff around'' for anything else,reference-wise,that might catch his fancy.

I am certainly ''richer'' for having heard about the ''speared messages'' story.

Rubislaw 32 link
9/10/2019 04:32:06 pm

And of course....if the Zodiac had been away on his travels, whether it be,for example,Vallejo and Greater L.A......then the first place of ''calling'',would be a library,to read archived newspapers.

Even if the Zodiac was ''away'' three months,or just a few weeks...a good local library would be able to provide him, with ''catch-up'' information.....to make it appear that his terror campaign, was ''full-on''....without any breaks,in the terrorizing.
