THE ZODIAC KILLER IN NEW YORK?

10/31/2019

Picture
Doreen Gaul (19) and James Sharp (15) were murdered on November 21st 1969, their bodies discovered in a Los Angeles alleyway, between Arapahoe Street and Magnolia Avenue. A threatening typed letter signed "The Zodiac Killer" was discovered in Doreen Gaul's belongings with the message "So you think you can fool the old killer, ha ha. I know all your movements and the time they are made. Time is short, enjoy life while you can. You are to beautiful to live and I must kill you".

On August 1st 1973, a letter postmarked Albany, New York was mailed to the Albany Times Union newspaper declaring "You were wrong, I am not dead or in the hospital. I am alive and well and I'm going to start killing again. Below is the name and location of my next victim. But you had better hurry because I'm going to kill her August 10th at 5:00 pm when the shift change. Albany is a nice town". It contained a code stating "(name) Albany Medical Center this only the beginning". The Albany Letter was a direct response to a New York Daily News article about the Zodiac Killer.

The two-page news article was published on July 22nd 1973, speculating on whether the Zodiac Killer was in "a mental hospital or dead", so it wasn't too surprising that the author of the Albany Letter replied just nine days later and began with
"You were wrong, I am not dead or in the hospital. I am alive and well". And then added a cryptogram threatening a medical center. But was the Zodiac Killer or hoaxer a resident of Albany, New York, or had traveled there for family or business? Albany Medical Center was 350 feet from Myrtle Avenue, the street on which Doreen Gaul previously lived. The exact address was 570 Myrtle Avenue, shown here on Google Maps.

Picture
Five months after the Albany Letter, The Exorcist film was released in the USA on December 26th 1973 - a supernatural horror movie showcasing the fight between good and evil through the practice of exorcism and the Catholic Church. Sixteen or seventeen days later, on January 11th/12th 1974, somebody claiming to be the Zodiac Killer telephoned the San Francisco police and several news outlets, stating they had killed a woman and placed her body in a Daly City church. Despite an extensive search, no such victim was discovered. This newspaper cutting is courtesy of Seagull from the Zodiac Killer Site forum.
Picture
Was the release of The Exorcist film the trigger for the phone calls? These telephone calls arrived at about the same time as a San Francisco Chronicle publication on January 11th 1974 by Paul Avery, entitled "Weird Goings-On At the Movies" and describing the audience reaction to The Exorcist film. The Zodiac Killer may have been responding to this Paul Avery newspaper article by phoning the police and applying a religious angle to his threats. A movie featuring Catholicism and exorcism, shortly followed by the claim of a "murdered woman in a church" would be remiss to ignore. The 01/29/74 Exorcist Letter postmark has been linked to San Mateo County, California, in which Daly City is the largest city.

On July 10th 1972, Jan and Brian Neven requested the assistance of psychics, reporting that paranormal activity and fires were spontaneously occurring in their home in Daly City (bordering San Francisco). This "poltergeist activity" eventually drew the services of Greek Orthodox priest Father Karl Pazelt, renowned for performing exorcisms.

This story was featured heavily 18 months later in a New York Times article on January 25th 1974, stating  "Father Pazelt said the family members were reportedly the victims of peculiar forces that he labeled as “exterior signs of the devil.” At times, he said, the devil choked them by the throat, knocked them unconscious, threw knives and glasses through the air and caused objects to break, burn, move, and fly.” Father Pazelt concluded that After receiving permission from San Francisco Archbishop Joseph T. McGucken, Father Pazelt performed 14 exorcisms of the Nevens family and Dr. Freda Morris in 1972-73". If the Zodiac Killer (or impersonator) had been living in New York (in or near Albany), could this New York Times article only four days prior to the mailing of the Exorcist Letter on January 29th 1974, coupled with The Exorcist film, have been the inspiration behind the Exorcist communication? The Daly City escapades of Father Karl Pazelt also appeared in a January 19th 1974 Watertown Daily (New York) feature, describing the unfolding drama in the Nevens family home.link.

With the former home address of Doreen Gaul, the typed letter and her eventual murder, the Albany Letter, and the New York publications regarding
Father Karl Pazelt occurring in the ten days run-up to the Exorcist Letter, can we argue a case for the Zodiac Killer in New York on these dates? Or was he firmly resident in the Bay Area and vicinity, claiming a "church murder" as a response to Paul Avery or the recent release of the Exorcist film - or both?

UFC heavyweight fighter Walt Harris's 19-year old stepdaughter, Aniah Haley Blanchard, hasn't been seen since Oct. 23 in Auburn, Alabama

The UFC heavyweight fighter is pleading with the public for help in finding his missing stepdaughter, Aniah Haley Blanchard, after Auburn Police said her vehicle was found Friday in Montgomery, Alabama.

I hope she has just ran away. And nothing more serious. But just the same if we can get the word out as fast as possible. Perhaps we can find her. Someone knows something.

The best way is Facebook and Twitter BB, which I don't use or have access to anymore. My Facebook site showed unauthorised activity and now Facebook require that I get friends to get me number codes via phone to get back in. I'm not that desperate to access Facebook so have abandoned using it. An article on a Zodiac site is not the best vehicle and wouldn't be appropriate. I suggest using social media as the quickest and fastest way to achieve results, or a missing person site.

Thanks - I am really just expressing frustration with authorities over this case. Their inability to get anything going. Just waiting for a lead. It is just the typical standing around ringing their hands. We're doing everything we can to find her. Not good enough. Change the way we go about doing everything. We need a big change. These disappearances are too common. They happen too often. A different response is needed. Many times when it comes to missing kids it turns-out to be a close by neighbor. These kidnappers must be taking advantage our laws of protecting people from illegal searches by police. But, when it comes to a missing kid - the homes in the immediate area could be cordon off and searched just for the child and anything else illegal found exempt from prosecution. If this is a dumb idea forgive me I'm just mentally spent.

There were 12 underscores on the Confession Letter, indicating that the author had 12 letters in his name. If the Zodiac Killer hadn't accidentally omitted "people" from draught to encoding on the 408 cipher, only 12 characters would have remained to contain his identity. Recently I speculated that the 13 Symbol Cipher may have contained the killer's initials in the form of "FK, I'm crackproof" (formed by a repeating cycle). When I looked at Darlene Ferrin's address book, it contained a man with the initials FK of 12 letters long. He had a shop at 10 Geary Street, near where Stine supposedly picked up the Zodiac Killer - and located at 2 Geary Street was Sydney Mobell's jewellery shop, featured here in an advertisement selling Zodiac watches. Not saying this guy was the Zodiac Killer, but just shows how coincidences line up.

Hi, Richard. Thanks for the article, and your last posting re: Frank's Coffee Shop and link to the mk-zodiac article. I was unfamiliar with it. I found a post from Seagull stating Frank was Darlene's uncle, which would definitely place her in the coffee shop, most likely quite often. Interestingly, Mobell not only had the jewelry shop, but was a composer and member of the "Songwriter's Hall of Fame." If Zodiac frequented the coffee shop / jewelry shop, and enjoyed various styles of music (maybe? maybe he hated music but just liked the idea of the Mikado), Mobell's ASCAP membership would most likely not escape his attention.

Richard
11/1/2019 01:18:29 am

Yes, I certainly am not saying he was Zodiac because these links are easily forged. I don't even know how old he was or what he looked like. Having said that, here is another interesting feature: His surname has a Zee in it, and the first two letters of his surname coupled with the last two letters of his surname spell Ko-Ko, The Lord High Executioner. And we know how much Zodiac liked The Mikado.

Tommy

Darlene had an Aunt married to a guy named Koko.. Darlene's aunt was married to Frank Kozusko.(real name of Koko) Darlene's father had a brother named George and a sister named Joan Elizabeth Suennen. I am assuming it was Joan that Darlene was named after. Is this the Frank that owned the coffee shop?

And, in light of the religious elements you listed, Doreen was a devout Roman Catholic and graduated from a parochial high school in Albany in 1968 before venturing into the Church of Scientology. Doreen and James were members, as was suspected of a third woman murdered in similar fashion around November 15th/16th. At the time, police were looking into the Church of Scientology, The Process, and the Manson Family.

Richard
11/1/2019 01:25:11 am

The nature of the attack was certainly more Manson family like, rather than Zodiac. I mulled over the idea that the Zodiac Killer traveled from the Bay Area, dropping off the November 21st 1969 San Jose letter to San Jose police on the way to Los Angeles. But this letter (which I believe is genuine) provides more of a hindrance than a bonus with respect to tying Zodiac to Los Angeles in such close proximity.

JD
11/1/2019 04:18:52 am

I have to say "WOW!" I didn't pay that close attention to the surname to see that. Good eyes! Word play = Ko-Ko. It certainly would change things if Ferrin and Mageau went to BRS to meet up with someone they knew.

There is a newspaper article re: the murder of Doreen and James which mentioned a message left on a garage. I didn't look for any further on that, and wonder if they mixed up the letter msg for a msg on a garage. Do you know anything about that?

Richard
11/1/2019 05:34:27 am

No that is a new one on me JD. I'll bet Sandy knows about the message on the garage. If you don't find out first I will bring it up next time I hear from her via email.

There was a Frank who married a Joan Suennen in 1950 in San Franciso. I believe he was born in 1922. He passed away in Truckee, California in 2008. His obituary stated he was in the US Navy during WW II and made 6 amphibious assault landings in the Pacific. Also states he worked as an auto mechanic. No mention of the coffee shop, so maybe not the right one, or if he is the right one, the coffee shop was just not mentioned in the obit. Also enjoyed playing in Harrah's poker tournaments.

His son was also named Frank Paul Kozusko, born 1946. Military date 1975 Commissioned and Warrant Officers of the United States Navy and Reserve Officers on Active Duty. Not sure how long he was in California as records indicate living in Virginia.

Richard
11/1/2019 05:45:02 am

Somebody 40-45 would be fine. I suppose it depends on how long the coffee shop was in existence on whether it's deserving of a mention in any obituary. It's only my inkling based on "FK, I'm crackproof" that I think Zodiac could really give his initials, safe in the knowledge it could never incriminate him. The only reason for the MK Zodiac reference was a few similarities to things I'd already looked at. Like I said, I highly doubt a few zynchronisities equate to Zodiac Killer, rather a curious connection with 12, FK, Ko-Ko, Zodiac watch and location. Now, if he looked like the twin of the sketch, then I might start quivering a touch. But not an angle I'm taking too seriously. Cheers for digging up the information on Ancestry - it's always worth a peep.

I'm not too sold on the Exorcist Letter being Zodiac anymore, but with that said I do find the San Mateo County link to the Exorcist Letter and church murder claim in Daly City an interesting one. particularly as it seems the phone calls came a matter of hours (less than a day) after the Avery article.

JD
11/1/2019 07:20:11 pm

I did some checking, but I'm not finding anything further about the garage. Here is the article:

https://www.newspapers.com/image/395357395/?terms=doreen%2Bgaul

They probably had the info wrong. The following article has the victims belonging to The Process and The Final Church of Judgement. Of course, that wouldn't be surprising, either.

Not sure how close the sketches are to the truth. I'm thinking there are quite a few people out there at the time that looked more like the Zodiac than the Zodiac himself. Just for fyi, when I sent the info on the Albany Phantom I did some checking on the subject who received the messages and found the 1959 photo of his son, William Jr. Add a little weight and change the hair style and I'd say you might have a ringer. Not that he was Zodiac any more than you or me, just another uncanny resemblance. I didn't realize until after looking all this up that there was a whole set of posts related to this topic on Voight's site clear back in 2015. Story of my life, day late dollar short LOL They posted the photo, here it is:

Cheers JD, as you said, these photographs in comparison to a Zodiac sketch that we are unsure of its accuracy, doesn't really lend itself to moving the case forward. Thanks for the picture anyway. The Melvin Belli Letter claim of searching for 9 & 10 victims appears to negate the Gaul & Sharp murders from the Zodiac perspective, although doesn't necessarily preclude him from the Gaul correspondence, in which we are unaware of its delivery date. The overall take I get, is of a person mimicking Zodiac to throw suspicion away from the real killer - and something that the Manson family had no reason to do. The attack appears personally driven.

JD
11/2/2019 04:23:55 am

Another idea for FK would be the Zodiac addressing Frank Ko-Ko or someone similar: "Hey, FK, like I told you, I'm crackproof."

The interesting take would be, if Ko-Ko saw the message, why wouldn't he report it?

Again, not saying that it's really the answer, but intriguing just the same.

Richard
11/2/2019 06:02:47 am

Certainly a possibility. In terms of the three "answers" such as "Fk, I'm crackproof", "Radians and inches along the radians" and "paradice and slaves", none require a solve. They are simply answers taken directly from the text of Zodiac, requiring the addition of just one word - "five". I have always hated the claims of the word "solved" in relation to the ciphers and communications, because it presumes 100% certainty to the exclusion of all others. In this instance above, the word "solved" isn't required because nothing was solved and was never needed to be solved. I know others may disagree, but with all these Zodiac mysteries, usually the ones that require the least explanation are more likely to be the correct ones. The Zodiac was a narcissistic braggart, and a person I cannot see holding onto his secrets for any length of time, which is why I don't believe he did. There are still other avenues regarding these cryptic messages that need to be explored and I'm convinced there is still more to be unearthed. The FK (correction) on the sixth line of the 340, the Exorcist Letter (if genuine) and its FK positioning, with the elevated and reversed K just like the sixth line, all worth further consideration. It may be a case of shapes in the clouds, but sometimes maybe not.

Shawn

This is kinda way out there....but you never know...throw it and see if it sticks...

FK could stand for Freedom Klub Or Freedom Club (FC) which Ted i Kaczynski’ etched on his homemade bombs

Freedom Club (FC) was an anarchist terror group that engaged in a bombing campaign on scientists and technologists between the 1970s and 1990s to spread an anti-industrial message.

The mob referred to the New York connection as La Cosa Nostra "our thing"
The Zodiac referred to his own work as "My Thing".
Is this indicative of his being connected?

Just searching for clues.

Melvin Belli was the Quasi lawyer of the Zodiac.
He was also the lawyer of Jack Ruby.
Jack cut his teeth as Al Capone's errand boy.
Then worked for Marcelo when he was ordered to
kill Oswald so he would not be given a trial.
Making Lee Harvey automatically guilty.
Obviously so the autopsy results would never expose
the small entry in JFK's skull and the large rear exit
wound. Proving Lee not guilty. As the shot came from

Lee Bowers told us about.

Zodiac cipher used Booz Balls. Now owned by a defense contractor.
Harvey Balls were proprietary in 1968 then they became owned by Booz Allen Hamilton in the 1970's. The inventor was code expert
Harvey Poppel. He was born on 12/18/1937 and is 81 years old. Belvedere and Tiburon CA. and Sarasota FL. Other names that Harvey uses includes L Poppel Harvey, Harvey L Popell and Harvey L Poppel. He has a criminal record. His name and #'s line-up. Some how we need a DNA test of this man. Same birthday as ALA.
