THE "MCDONALD'S" LETTER

Two letters were mailed and postmarked February 1st 1988 and February 8th 1988 to McDonald's at 2 Northgate Park, Chattanooga, Tennessee. Both contained the word "attention" written on the envelope, with the first stating "attn. dan r." and the second likely the full name (hence why it is redacted). The February 1st 1988 correspondence had an accompanying hand- printed sheet of paper, likely beginning "dear Dan this is the Zodiac speaking", along with accompanying printed cutouts entitled "CHINESE ZODIAC", and beginning "The Chinese Zodiac..." and "Many Chinese believe..." The February 8th 1988 correspondence had a sheet of graph paper with the hand-printed beginning "This is the Zodiac (speaking)" and accompanying form entitled "McDonald's Profile Change Notice", upon which was the hand-written message "This is shit..."

ALSO SUBMITTED: McDonald's form entitled "FILET-O-FISH/CHICKEN McNUGGETS/PIES Station Observation Checklist G7/G8/G9".

The McDonald's is not present there today and it doesn't appear one was present at this location in 1988 either, but I thought I would drop down to street level on Google maps and take a peek at 2 Northgate Park, Chattanooga. Amazingly, this is the view that confronted me (although when this logo was adopted I am unsure). 119 miles separates this location and 1611 Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Georgia, where another alleged Zodiac communication was mailed on March 8th 1981 to the television station WXIA-TV "11 Alive", claiming involvement in the Atlanta Child Murders.

I wanted to find who the target of one (probably both) of the letters was, regarding the address of "attn. dan r.". After a little digging it was discovered that the CEO of Greenleaf Center, Inc./North Georgia, a Foreign Profit Corporation with a last annual registration year of 1988, was Dan B. Page. The address was 1 Northgate Park, Chattanooga, Tennessee.

"According to public records DAN PAGE B is connected with one company - Greenleaf Center, Inc./North Georgia . This person is appointed in Greenleaf Center, Inc./North Georgia as a CEO. This company was incorporated about thirty-seven years, ago in October of 1982 in Chattanooga. The company is listed as Withdrawn in Georgia companies records". The address listed here is 2 Northgate Park, Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Greenleaf Center, Inc./North Georgia is a Georgia Foreign Profit Corporation filed on October 14, 1982. The company's filing status is listed as Withdrawn and its File Number is J251556. The Registered Agent on file for this company is R. Lindsay Shuff and is located at 500 Greenleaf Circle, Ft Oglethorpe, GA 30742. The company's principal address is 1 Northgate Park Ste 201, Chattanooga, TN 37415-6912. The company has 3 principals on record. The principals are Dianna Gilbert from Chattanooga TN, Page B, Dan from Chattanooga TN, and Lindsay R. Shuff from Chattanooga TN. link

The February 1st 1988 envelope admittedly states "attn. dan r.", but with the dates and address matching, one can only assume that the sender got the middle initial incorrect (unless you know better in comments). We have these communications and the March 8th 1981 "Peachtree" Letter, with a loose Georgia connection, separated by 119 miles.

It is now your job to make the connection between between McDonald's, China and the addressee in question - assuming we have the right person.

It was '' Chattanooga '' which took my attention,immediately.

The song '' Chattanooga Choo Choo '',best known for its Glen Miller arrangement.

'' I can afford to board a Chattanooga Choo Choo.I've got my fare,and just a trifle to spare.....You leave Pennsylvania Station....then you know that Tennessee is not far away.''

Yes...the lyrics refer to a train,that travelled from Pennsylvania Station,NY....to Chattanooga Terminal Station,Chattanooga,TN.

When the Chattanooga Terminal Station was closed,it was converted into The Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel.

Another famous Glen Miller arrangement is '' Pennsylvania 6-5000 ''.

'' PE-6-5000 '' is the oldest telephone number,in New York,and belongs to The Hotel Pennsylvania.Now, '' 212-736-5000 '',with the ''212'' being the area code for Manhattan.

The ''PE'' prefix,of the origial version of the phone number,emanated from an exchange,at Pennsylvania Railway Station.

'' Pennsylvania '' has come to light,as having possible Zodiac links,recently.In particular,the Nixon postcard,of 1974,with the address of the White House,being ( 1600 ) Pennsylvania Avenue.In addition,a letter written to Joseph Kennedy,in 1964,and posted at Pennsylvania Railway Station,NY.

So...Railway Stations,Hotels and Glen Miller...all possibly,part of a Zodiac link [?].

But,in particular,inferences yet again of the Zodiac being,a....

I originally thought this might be a child pissing about, but with 1988 so far from the fold of most Zodiac letters and the direct reference to possibly a CEO or board member of a company, it seems this is unlikely. It could be an adult with a grudge, but to invoke Zodiac when he was hardly newsworthy anymore seems a little lame. I have been unable to find any McDonald's at this address in 1988, or what "Dan" has to do with this fast food chain at all. There has to be an answer somewhere.

Chattanooga Terminal Station closed in 1970.It was best known,for its regular train to Birmingham,Alabama.The hotel opened in 1973.

A touch of sentimentality,then,if a real link to the Zodiac.

I cannot find any reference to a McDonald's at this address ever. This was only 2 years prior to the beginning of the World Wide Web. If there isn't one mention anywhere, I'm inclined to believe there never was a McDonald's at this location.

These communications probably weren't Zodiac, but if this man was going to make any mistakes, one would expect him to do so when he was inexperienced in his early crimes or when he became over-confident, thinking he was now in the clear with passing time. Twenty years after his first known murders it would be understandable if he became complacent. If he had a beef with somebody in his personal or business life, he may well have invoked the Zodiac persona. I have hit a dead end regarding these communications, but there must have been a reason why the author of the letters directed this material towards this particular person. The sheer fact the sender mailed two letters a week apart with a Chinese element to them, showed a degree of effort - particularly with the printed cutouts. The Chinese Zodiac in 1988 was the year of the Dragon, and we know Zodiac mailed the Dragon Card.

Chinese dragon, also known as East Asian dragon or Long, are legendary creatures in Chinese mythology, Chinese folklore, and East Asian culture at large. Chinese dragons have many animal-like forms such as turtles and fish, but are most commonly depicted as snake-like with four legs. They traditionally symbolize potent and auspicious powers, particularly control over water, rainfall, typhoons, and floods. The dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, and good luck for people who are worthy of it in East Asian culture. During the days of Imperial China, the Emperor of China usually used the dragon as a symbol of his imperial strength and power.

In Chinese culture, excellent and outstanding people are compared to a dragon, while incapable people with no achievements are compared to other, disesteemed creatures, such as a worm. A number of Chinese proverbs and idioms feature references to a dragon, such as "Hoping one's son will become a dragon".

The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the new moon that appears between 21 January and 20 February. The second letter was postmarked February 8th 1988. In 1988 the Chinese New Year began on February 17th, approximately one week later. Was the letter a warning regarding this date - when the Dragon emerged. Spooky eh.

As in the myth about Nian, firecrackers are supposed to scare off monsters and bad luck. So people stay up on Chinese New Year’s Eve and set off firecrackers at midnight. In the morning, firecrackers are used again to welcome the new year and good luck.
That same night, families also burn fake paper money and printed gold bars in honor of their deceased loved ones. Similar to the Korean Chuseok holiday or the Mexican Day of the Dead traditions, they believe the offerings will bring fortune and good luck to their ancestors in the afterlife.

I wonder if the phrase above reads "Many Chinese in the afterlife".

It's possible that I have uncovered the identity of the person,as referred to,in '' attn. dan r. ''.

'' Dan Rather '',the famous journalist,who is still alive,at 87 years old.

Rather's big break,in journalism,was to be the first reporter,on the spot,at the JFK assassination.

Texas born,and brought up in Houston,Dan Rather rose to the heights of anchorman,for CBS Evening news,in 1981...taking over,from his illustrious colleague,Walter Cronkite.

If '' dan r. '' is Dan Rather,this tips the likelihood of the correspondence,towards being genuine ''Zodiac''.

But,''content'' remains unclear.

I'm just in a bit of shock,since ''attention of '',plus ''Dear dan'' links us,to one of the most well known journalists,of his generation.Well,the Eureka Card [1990 ] squares us up,to Paul Avery,again...plus my claims on a ''Secret Pal'' link to the Celebrity Cipher [1990].And Mr.Avery and Mr.Spnelli,and Mr.Caen,were in the Zodiac's thoughts...going back to the Zodiac's original reign of terror.

I haven't even started with ''McDonalds'' and ''Chinese Zodiac'' yet.

Do we have dates for the two 1988 New Canaan Letters ? This puts Z263 together,and a distinctly ''New England/New Jersey/New York/Boston'' flavour,together....plus my claims,on a Joan/George Webster link,also.

I think you are right about Northgate Park,Richard.

All it has ever been,is exclusively a Business Park,with opportunities to rent office and storage space.

It is in an area of what,one presumes is,the ''new town'' part of Chattanooga.Shopping malls and eateries,in the vicinity,with hotels not far away.

If we are looking at the real Zodiac,then this correspondence seems to be,yet another opportunity for him to telegraph a geographical position,with false general representation.

And,the adding of a well known individual,and media related,such as Dan Rather....is just extra insurance that the authorities,like the FBI,take notice.

If we accept this as a Zodiac correspondence,it re-enforces a notion about the Zodiac,as having a yearning for the nomadic life....but,as a modern person,in a modern world,it is something he could only indulge in,in his spare time.

One does hear of other people,with similar yearnings.The Hollywood actor,Anthony Hopkins,for instance....who has always had an agreement,with his wife,that he be allowed to take himself off,whenever the urge comes about.To simply motor wherever his car takes him,staying at Motels,on the way.

To see the ''world'',but as a stanger,and share the experience with only themselves.

But,with the Zodiac's compulsion for extortion,and particularly,with the authorities...this form of nomadic yearning presented extra opportunities.

For all we know,the Zodiac often might have had the idea,that he would present the false clue,that he was a travelling salesman.

But,in the scheme of things,it probably didn't bother him if the authorities thought this of him,or not.

Just someone who seemed to be constantly on the move.But,in reality,did lay down ''roots''....but only for a given period.

Interesting that you should mention the Choo-Choo Broadcasting Company Inc.,Richard,as a resident business,at 2 Northgate Park.

Do you know anymore about it ?

I suspect it operated as a radio station,that also had music studios,for rent [ ? ].

In 1975,the band Lynyrd Skynyrd recorded some songs,that eventually became an album,called ''Chattanooga Choo Choo -The great Tennessee recordings.''.It's possible that the songs were recorded there.

In 1984,the comedy film ''Chattanooga Choo Choo'' was released,starring Barbara Eden and George Kennedy.

A slightly strange coincidence,in that in the 1988 New Canaan letters,sent two months on,from this February correspondence,a [presumed] Zodiac sets a riddle,related to the Z263 cipher.

''...ask Missus Taylor who draws the symbol then you will have me.Good Luck.''

As I have informed the Cryptanalysis Unit,it was the actress Lee Taylor referred.She and Wayne Rogers played astronauts,and it was Barbara Eden,playing ''Jeannie'',in ''I dream of Jeannie'',who drew the symbol,which was an ingot.

The ingot was referred,again,in Scorpion's S5 cipher.

So,a Barbara Eden link,there,to Chattanooga and New Canaan.Correspondences just a matter of weeks apart.

Perhaps the Zodiac had a ''thing'' about actress,Barbara Eden [?].

There is something rather shifty about these companies registered at 2 Northgate Park. I can't put my finger on it, but coupled with the sender of these communications effectively giving the name McDonald's that didn't exist here, something seems a bit untoward. I'm not even sure that this wasn't some kind of promotional underhanded game. I'm completely stumped on this one Rubislaw. I cannot find anything on Choo-Choo Broadcasting Company Inc or any of the other companies for that matter. It is almost like they were fronts.

You may well be right,Richard,with respect to the possibility of ''fronts'' for something else,that a ''Zodiac'' knew about,or suspected.And,intended to bring to the attention of either the FBI,or Dan Rather....or both.

Now then....it has become increasingly apparent that,the Zodiac was always ''game'' or,a sucker for,a well known journalist....or,controversial politician.

Not much more ''controversial'',than George Wallace.

So,I checked on the FBI vaults....and nothing.

But,but....it seems that the State of Alabama made their own request,and have a number of files on George Wallace.

So....I'll give it my best shot,and wade through them,looking for Zodiac clues.

In the words claimed,by Harry Hill,and as spoken by his father :

It's listed as the Walden Club. The Walden Club is a social club located high atop the tallest building in the heart of downtown Chattanooga. 633 Chestnut Street is about 9 miles from 2 Northgate Park. Strangely, Donald Harden lived at 54 Chestnut Street in Salinas, although highly unlikely any meaning behind it.

And appears that his previous business address,was at 1 Northgate Park.

It doesn't get any easier [?].

I'll press on with the FBI files,leading up to,and following,the assassination attempt on George Wallace,by Arthur Bremer,May 15th 1972,at Laurel,Maryland.

A lot to get through...but looking to see if any of the peripheral ''kooks'' might be the Zodiac....''buying in'' as an event for a hoaxing ''opportunity''.

Lou Groen.
Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Groen graduated from North College Hill High School in 1935. At his peak, Groen owned 43 McDonald's restaurants in the Ohio and northern Kentucky region, eventually selling them back to the McDonald's corporation, including a longtime business partner Ed Cummings's brother and son. He held on to two, in Northgate and Tylersville, until his own son Paul took them over in 1994.

Career with McDonald's:
A prominent McDonald's hamburger restaurant franchisee from 1959 to 1986, after he introduced his sandwich in 1962, McDonald's Corp. founder and CEO Ray Kroc was not exactly thrilled at the idea of a fish sandwich on his franchise menu, for he thought that he had a better idea, a "Hula" burger, which had simply a breaded, fried pineapple slice in between a toasted bun and a slice of cheese. Recalls Groen: "I told Ray (Kroc) about it (the idea of the Filet-O-Fish sandwich) and he said, “You’re always coming up here with a bunch of crap!” “I don’t want my stores stunk up with the smell of fish.” Groen engaged in a wager with Kroc on whose idea would sell better. Groen recalls again: "I called in (McDonald's) and asked, "How many sandwiches did (Kroc) sell?" They (McDonald's Corp.) said “I can't tell you.” They asked “How many did you sell?” I said “350!” Then, they said “It's on the menu.

The Northgate branch he opened was 295 miles north of Chattanooga. It doesn't match the zip code on the letters or 2 Northgate Park. However, Northgate does appear as a location where a McDonald's was present and he did come up with the idea of a Filet-O-Fish sandwich, which featured in the McDonald's letters. Bloody hell, this is confusing.

Well...it seems that you have found a link to the company McDonalds,through the name ''Northgate''....and that could be something [?]....just on the Zodiac's propensity for being duplicitous.

Look what happened to promotions on burger boxes,in France,with McDonalds,a couple of years back.Plus,recent promotions on India Pale Ale,in the Bay area.

Plus,my ''beef'' with Mr.Fagan,over a ''Curse of Oak Island'',to the History Channel scheduling.

It may just be imagination...but if a major reviewing investigation,with the Zodiac case,is taking place,behind the scenes....then its virtually unavoidable that some companies being asked certain questions,by agencies,such as the FBI...might see certain ''business'' opportunities,to be had [?]....provided they are subtle about it.

Perhaps the Hearst Corporation and McDonalds,are among these sorts of companies,that have been asked ''telling'' questions,in recent times [?].

Maybe...it's ''no wonder'' that it is Herminghaus,that seems to be,at the centre of this recent ''photograph'' contoversy [?].

The silence has been deafening since new DNA testing was initiated on the Zodiac letters, actually late 2017. It has now been two years, so does anybody really hold much hope for the answers to arrive now. The History Channel docudrama was more like an appeasment exercise in fuelling the masses - and with no disrespect to to the two investigators involved, who I'm sure are and were good detectives - their knowledge of Zodiac was limited and were sent on a well-trodden path of everything we already knew, including chasing two suspects that were flavour of the month. I believe we will hear some developments in 2020, but it will probably be that the search for Zodiac and his DNA are over.

I have taken the Donna Lass photographs from Tom's site and overlayed them, and they are an incredible match. The ear positions are questionable, but that can be explained by the tilt of somebody's head. That doesn't mean I believe Lass is alive, but nevertheless an intriguing correlation beteween both photographs. Herminghaus wouldn't be the first officer to pull a stunt and make unsubstantiated claims, as was done with the copper claiming Zodiac's voice had been recorded on July 5th 1969. We'll have to see how the Zodiac investigation pans out in 2020. No DNA results by the end of next year is a real possibility.

I agree that ''Sal'' and ''Tattoo Man'' weren't at fault...just a couple of ex-investigators with acting union cards.

I have often thought that it might be worth watching that series again...just to see what LE ''don't'' want the Zodiac for.A sort of tick off the boxes,for deduction,exercise [?].

Personally,I was more than curious about the ''Curse of Oak Island'',and ''French Connection'' to McDonalds.

But,given the possible India Pale Ale link,also [...which remains a bit of a mystery...]...and coupled with McDonalds,and even Col.Sanders....''we'' might be looking at,an attempt,by the Zodiac to extort,on the basis of threatening contamination and/or actual poisoning of food and drink [?].

Something,that so far,never has emerged,in the pubic domain,to date.

Certainly interesting,Richard,what you have performed on the controversial photograph

Unless Ms.Florez or Powers,himself,comes clean about the source of that photograph,then its pretty clear that the public won't be better placed to make further judgements.

If it is the case that the source is Det.Herminghaus....then,at least,on the basis of Herminghaus registering an underhanded ''protest'',on behalf of his police department....we could surmise that some dirty washing is being laundered,before something ''big'' happens [?].But,as you further suggest....it could be a ''ways off'' yet....and maybe even,''sometime never''.

And,there was me,having felt sorry for the FBI,in the obviously prejudicial way,that the Riverside Police had treated them,over the Bates correspondences.

Looks like ''our man'' from the North Hollywood area of L.A.,was busy again.This time targetting ''Silver Spring'',Maryland.Silver Spring is a town,about 7 miles north of Washington D.C.It is best known,for being the Administration centre for the government's overseeing of the food and pharmacutical industries.

I will return with some references,and an outline.

During May 17th - May 19th 1972 ,letters were sent ,via airmail,from a ''913'' posting point,synonymous with a hoaxer,from the North Hollywood viciniy,of Greater Los Angeles.

The letters,with similar content,were handwritten,and all focused on specific addresses,at Silver Spring,Maryland...about seven miles,north of Washington D.C.

The following recipients :

Kiwanis ; Chevrolet Dealer ; Fire Chief ; State Highway Patrol ; Sheriff's Office ; Chairman of City Hall ; Office of Coroner ; Chief of Police ; Masonic Lodges [2].

These correspondences,in the wake of the assassination attempt on the life of George Wallace,Governor of Alabama,May 15th 1972.

As documented by the FBI,two suspects were later investigated for this ''spree'' of letters.But it appears that investigations ended,after the D.A. for Los Angeles,advised the FBI,that the hoaxer had not violated federal statutes.

The letters start :

'' World's Best Newspaper....Where to look for Communist Doctrine ?''.

''You can go to Boston,the fountainhead,as did Harold L Fickett Jr.,where it has been nurtured by the Catholics,and fostered by the Kennedy's.From there,it was brought to California by Jewish Psychologists.....From the beginning,the Hearst Family has embraced the Mafia and the communists......''

The letter mentions two further newspapers,The Herald Examiner and National Enquirer.

The letter mentions celebrated individuals,including Robert Felix,Cary Grant,Howard Hughes,J Paul Getty and Hugh ''Playboy'' Getty.

The letter references a film :

''Typical Jewish Communist Doctrine is the movie '' The Greatest Story Ever Told '',shown at The First Baptist Church of Van Nuys,to prove Christ was murdered by Roman Emperialists.

The letter further refers to politicians,George Wallace,Hubert Humphry,and Ralph Nader.

For a good FBI summation on these letters,then :

7...section 8 of 26 Pages 144 - 149

Then,if you look at Pages 150 - 153...it looks like the FBI tracked the letter writer responsible.for having used Newark Airport,previously.

Further,that they interviewed him,to see if he knew Arthur Bremer.

But no charges brought,since,technically,he had not broken the law.

So....if this is the handwriting of the man who adopted the persona,The Zodiac....then,the FBI ''now'' already know,the identity of The Zodiac.

Trying to connect these letters to Zodiac (or imitator of Zodiac) would seem on the face of it to be quite a stretch. I have looked at them all, and can see no obvious connection, other than a completely independent third party. There is the "government life" threats on Nixon, Carter etc, but Zodiac (or his copycats) weren't the only weirdos in town in this turbulent times. I am sure there is a crossover element to some of the communications we've examined Rubislaw, but these I am struggling with these. Unless you find more!

For the George Wallace Files....that was it,really,Richard.

But...quite a ''standout'',with much going for it,in content.Politics,Religion,History,references to politicians,celebrities from entertainment and business influence.And,of course,a reference to a film.

''Someone'',anyway,with a deep desire to show off.....who acted on impulse,becoming very ''industrious'',within hours of Wallace being shot.

Indeed,it is a guessing game for us amateurs...knowing that senior LE hold all the important cards....but I can see a resolution to this Zodiac case.It's just that it becomes more and more apparent that,LE are doing this,largely for themselves,in the belief that the public will forgive them for the litany of mistakes made,in the years gone by.

Their vanity denies them the core philosophy about serving the public's best interests.And,while they beat about the bush,more and more bereaved of victims pass away,never having had knowledge of any consequence....much less,justice owed them.

These missives just uncovered,emanate from May 1972.I'm just away to look into,how they might fit into a possible Zodiac timeline of extortion-related activity.

It seems to me,that the Zodiac became ''DB Cooper - The Extortionist'',after Karl Werner's crimes,effectively sent the Zodiac ''packing'',from his Bay area dominance.

Possibly Dan Bernard Page from Chattanooga, who initially studied psychology. Edward Adams, Richard Adler and Dan Page, all at some point involved with psychiatry and psychology. May have gone on to be Reverend Dan B Page. You know who to thank. Here is an image.

Interesting addition to an unclear narrative,Richard.

According to Lafferty,Adams was William Grant's psychiatrist,who treated Grant,for addiction to gambling and alcohol.

Then,Richard Adler was the psychiatrist that Adams recommended to Grant,to treat Grant's wife Marian....when Marian had a nervous breakdown,following revelations made to Marian,by husband Grant,after Grant winning his court injunction against all of law enforcent....on the basis of police harrasment.

At the time,Grant was about to travel ''across country'',and bring his ailing mother,to live with Grant and Marian.It seems that he felt that he best be honest with his wife,if she was going to put up with Grant,any longer...and,of course,assist him in looking after his mother.

But Grant's revelations,only served to give Marian,a nervous breakdown.But,Marian nevertheless,elected not to desert Grant,in his hour of need.

In August 1976,Grant and Marian moved out of their ''roomy'' property,on Cordelia Road....following Grant's mother's death.

This is why I believe that the Zodiac was responsible for the ''Imperial Wizard'' ad.....about a month,following Grant leaving his Cordelia Road property.In effect to let Grant know,that he,the Zodiac,was still keeping an eye on Grant's circumstances and movements.

But...with the Zodiac placing the ad,as if Grant,himself,had placed it.

But these ''credentials'' of Dan B.Page might make an interesting addition,on possible links....and increase the likelihood that,the McDonald's correspondence,was authentic Zodiac.

....just as a 'postscript'....and mere gossip,as reported by Lafferty :
Richard Adler was viewed with suspicion,by those concerned about Marian's mental well-being.

''Word of mouth'' suggested that Adler had had ''run in'' with the authorities,for having sex with his patients,in the past....and was considered lucky,not to have been ''struck off'' from practicing psychiatry.
