THREE MONTHS AFTER THE MOUNT DIABLO CODE

10/12/2019

THE 340 CIPHER WAS CRACKED ON DECEMBER 3RD 2020 BY DAVE ORANCHAK, SAM BLAKE AND JARL VAN EYCKE, SO THIS EARLIER ARTICLE SHOULD BE VIEWED IN RESPECT TO RECENT DEVELOPMENTS.

The following article will coalesce several pieces of work from 2019 into one cogent story regarding a handful of communications mailed by the Zodiac Killer in 1970. For some, the following will be repetitive, for which I apologize. It will hopefully make the case that the Zodiac Killer was winding down his operations and ultimately revealing the answers to his Z340, Z32 and Z13 ciphers and codes, to which he knew were practically unsolvable without such a prompt. The Zodiac Killer was a narcissistic braggart, who boasted of his exploits and threatened all and sundry with the possibility of more murders and mayhem if his demands were not met, including the claim he had killed far more than could be accounted for. If we applied the same model to his ciphers and codes, we would have expected him to be unable to resist giving us the answers - or at the very least - some clues to break open his puzzles. The notion of a killer keeping deathly silent on the solutions to his codes for up to 50 years, runs contrary to everything we know about the Bay Area murderer during his brief but deadly reign. That is why I don't believe he did.

The story begins with the final thing he wrote on the July 26th 1970 Little List Letter, and finishes just two communications later with the October 27th 1970 Halloween Card. All the answers to his codes were contained in just three short months. The end of the Little List Letter read "PS. The Mt. Diablo Code concerns Radians and # inches along the radians". The Z32 was the easiest code to crack because the Zodiac Killer just gave us the answer above - the code concerned "Radians and inches along the radians". Why make it any more complicated than it has to be? A code of 29 unique symbols within a total of 32 characters is simply not solvable without a key - and there is insufficient wording on the 13 Hole Postcard, Halloween Card or Los Angeles Letter written in plain English to formulate any such key. The Z32 is even worse than giving us the English alphabet of 26 letters, replacing M with A, W with B and H with C and saying "now solve it". There is no transposition key present in the remaining three communications from October 5th 1970 to March 13th 1971, so if the Zodiac Killer was to be consistent in his inability to resist revealing his deeds, then the only realistic alternative is he gave us all the answers instead.
Picture
You need look no further than the Paul Stine police report to notice that the hashtag symbol is used to represent the word "number". The Zodiac Killer, by use of an arrow pointer underneath the hashtag, was telling us to replace the hashtag with a number value. The Mount Diablo map scale was 6.4 miles to the inch, so it is probably unsurprising that the "Mt Diablo code would concern inches". In this instance, I have placed the number 5 into place, giving us the answer of "5 inches along the radians". The reason for 5 inches is self explanatory, because 4 or 6 inches from Mount Diablo to San Francisco would fall into the sea on the east and west side. The San Francisco element will be covered shortly. The Zodiac Killer also gave us a second set of crosshairs (shown below).
Picture
This was the first time the Zodiac Killer had ever placed an accentuated zero within his crosshairs alongside the acronym SFPD. This had to be the second clue to the location of the bomb. The hashtag and arrow signified the value of inches required, so this had to signify the radian value. By some massive stroke of luck (almost beyond belief), the bold, black accentuated circle fell over 246 degrees on a compass rose - which is 4 radians and magnetic north (17 degrees in 1970). Therefore, the target of his bomb must have been 4 radians and magnetic north, and 5 inches along the radians.

All Zodiac's bomb threats were focused towards the San Francisco Chronicle and San Francisco Police Department, so placing this bomb location alongside the acronym SFPD should tell us that the threat was most likely focused toward a police station. By another massive stroke of luck, when we travel 4 radians and 5 inches from Mount Diablo, the target area for the bomb lies right by Ingleside Police Station. Allowing for a degree of flexibility of about 2%, by the Zodiac Killer rounding off his radians and inches, along with the black circle diameter, no other San Francisco police station comes close. However, we need to find a location where a school bus would be traveling from north to south (with the sun to the east), that has an embankment on the right side (as displayed on the April 20th 1970 bomb diagram), with easy and covert access to that embankment, and within a few hundred feet from Ingleside Police Station. The Zodiac Killer certainly wouldn't have wanted to attract attention by parking on the road itself, but by accessing the incline from a secondary location - likely at the top of the embankment - he could achieve this task in relative anonymity. Fortunately for us, that location sits approximately 230 feet from Ingleside Police Station. The perfect location for the Zodiac Killer to target a school bus and thumb his nose at the San Francisco Police Department, with covert access to the top of the embankment via the car park of San Francisco City College.

Then came the 13 Hole Postcard punched in the style of a 'Dick Tracy' code with a "red crucifix decoder". What are the chances that if we arranged the 13 holes into the shape of a cross and place it over the midsection of the 340 cipher both horizontally and vertically, it would reveal the wording "paradice" and "slaves"? Then, what are the chances that the Zodiac Killer would write "paradice" and "slaves" in his next communication in a cross formation on the card, accompanied by "sorry no cipher" in a cross formation on the inside of the Halloween Card envelope? - totaling three cross formations - but supposedly, all created for absolutely no reason whatsoever in just two communications. Isn't it more believable they were created for purpose. The Zodiac Killer could easily have written "sorry no cipher" just the once, but deliberately fashioned it this way to tell us that the 340 character cipher was not a cipher after all. It was simply a design of "paradice" and "slaves" as exhibited by the Halloween Card. Throw in a few bigrams, pivots and 'corrected sixth line', and hopefully it will look convincing.
Picture
All these clues from the back end of the Little List Letter to the Halloween Card giving us the literal answer to both the Z340 and Z32 in "paradice" and "slaves", and "Estimate: Four Radians and Five Inches". The 32 character code wasn't the complete solution, because the Zodiac Killer explicitly stated "the map coupled with the code will tell you where the bomb is set", which included magnetic north of 17 degrees in 1970. The code contained "four radians and five inches", to be coupled with the map which incorporated the magnetic north, giving us a total of 246.2 degrees. See The Blast Estimate of Zodiac and The Blast Estimate of Zodiac (Part Two) and The Blast Estimate of Zodiac (Part Three). Could either the 13 Hole Postcard or Halloween Card give us the answer to the Z13 as well? Again, totally unsolvable because of its limited number of characters, the Zodiac Killer could either keep quiet for up to fifty years or give us the answer.
Picture
From a previous article: On January 29th 1970, the Yellow Cab Company put up a thousand dollar reward for any information leading to the arrest of the Zodiac Killer. In addition, the Teamsters Union which represents the Yellow Cab Company were reported in the San Francisco Chronicle to be considering offering a further reward on February 8th 1970 in the case of Paul Stine and Charles Jarman (another taxicab murder victim). The April 20th 1970 letter gave us the code and was immediately followed by "I am mildly cerous as to how much money you have on my head now". The October 5th 1970 postcard gave us the possible solution of "Fk, I'm crackproof" and was immediately followed by "What is the price tag now". These are the only two communications in which the Zodiac Killer asked the police the price of his capture. These two communications not only had a code and an answer that fitted the code, but both were followed by the exact same question. When the Zodiac Killer was designing his 13 Hole Postcard, it is very likely he had at his disposal a copy of his original April 20th 1970 letter, or the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper cutting below, to which he was now supplying the answer. This may have been the trigger that influenced him to repeat the phrase "how much money you have on my head now" into the very similar "What is the price tag now". The Zodiac Killer, in essence, had inadvertently bound both communications together through phraseology, as well as code and solution.

The Zodiac Killer introduction would now give us his name (albeit his initials) in absence of his full name. It would also read fluently as a sentence, as follows: "This is the Zodiac speaking. By the way have you cracked the last cipher I sent you? My name is Fk, I'm crackproof". Nobody realistically believed he was going to supply his full name, but this way he satisfies the promise in a restricted format. Two communications mailed nearly six months apart, with a solution that satisfies the code, as well as a satisfactory introduction to the code - and both followed by the same question.

The three 8's (representing Jesus Christ in gematria), along with the number 8 which symbolizes a new beginning, actually begins each element of the phrase Fk I'm crackproof. In addition, when we begin the phrase on the first 8, it fits perfectly around the existing K and M already present in the code and thereby creating a cyclical format, where the code ends and begins with the same letter. The Little List Letter provided the solution to the Button Letter and Mount Diablo code that preceded it. His next communication, the 13 Hole Postcard, provided the solution to the 13 Symbol Cipher before that, and finally the Halloween Card provided the solution to the 340 cipher. Three chronological solves to the three previous ciphers - and the only thing we had to add was the number "5", for which he inserted the hashtag and arrow. Why look for convoluted and excessively complicated solutions to these ciphers, when the Zodiac Killer gave us all the answers literally word for word.
Picture
Picture
This isn't a case of dragging wording from the entire Zodiac collection of cards and letters, but using just the two crosshairs of the Little List Letter, followed by the 13 Hole Postcard and Halloween Card. The bold, black circle and "PS. The Mt. Diablo Code concerns Radians and # inches along the radians" to answer the Z32. The 13 holes, red cross, "paradice" and "slaves", and "sorry no cipher" to answer the Z340. And finally, "Fk, I'm crackproof" to give us a shorthanded version of his name, while still retaining his anonymity. The alternative is that the codes are genuine, the designs on the 13 Hole Postcard and Halloween Card are devoid of any purposeful meaning, and the big-headed, braggart called Zodiac, kept his lips 'butoned' for however many years afterwards.

Take a look at this image of the Riverside Desktop Poem Rubislaw. We know the author of the poem placed a dot in the "O" of to die. We also know the author of the 340 used to same "monad" style symbol. The strange scrawl can be interpreted in many different ways - it looks like the "dripping pen" remotely, or a body lying on the floor, but I would like to draw your attention to the word "wont". It seems the author has spelled it "wont", but instead of correcting it with an apostrophe, they have seemingly crossed out the "n" and added an "n and apostrophe" above it. Very strange indeed. Clearly somebody not in their right mind one would think. When I look at the writing on the "Dripping Pen" Card of Zodiac, he spelled the word "wont" incorrectly, but again seemingly added the apostrophe as an afterthought - placing it over the "o". Nothing earth-shattering, but just a comparison I noted.

Interesting observations,Richard.

I have looked at the Dripping Pen card....and yes,the '' won't '' word has its apostrophe floating high above the alphabetic letter '' o ''.

Of particular interest, since Sherwood Morrill was generally complimentary about the Zodiac's usage of English grammer,of which '' grammer contraction '' words, such as '' won't '' ,were a feature.

Just sticking with the Dripping Pen card, for a moment....it's difficult to dismiss the '' Des '' [...Deg ( ? )...],as standing for anything other, than '' December '',with Lake Herman Road,in mind.

But someone has come up with the interesting suggestion of '' Des '',standing for '' Darlene Elizabeth Suennen ''.

The Zodiac was known for his ''duplicity'',and this might be a clue, that the Zodiac knew Darlene.....and before she ever got married ( ? ). [....Des July...].

Since the title of your article refers to '' Mount Diablo '',I thought I would just take this opportunity,to point your readers out to the original Zodiac FBI Files,Part 6 of 6 ,Pages 123 and 124.

A reference to ''someone'' who sent the FBI a Christmas card and 118 page explanation of the '' Mount Diablo Code ''.

This ''someone'' first did this,on May 27th 1981....and then, did exactly the same,on December 17th 1991.Just over ten years apart.

I wonder who ( ? ).

Just on references, with regard to a Christmas card and Mount Diablo Code ''package'' :

A possible ''Zodiac'' wrote and mailed the ''Atlanta'' letter,March 8th 1981.About 11 weeks before the FBI's first package.

The second package arrived one year following the Eureka Card...in effect,a Christmas card, and with the zerox photo of ''Two keys''....which may have referred to a false encryption method employed,to fool cryptanalysis agents,in a method to break the Zodiac's remaining unsolved ciphers.

I believe that "Rules of Decoding the Mount Diablo code" was written by Goldcatcher or Blaine of Gaikowski fame.

Zodiac Killer Facts: Blaine Blaine aka “Purple” Blaine continued in his efforts to prove that Richard Gaikowski was the Zodiac, and, by 1991, even the FBI was coping with the consequences of the amateur sleuth’s dedication and special style of assistance. The San Francisco office of the FBI sought the assistance of the Bureau’s Technical Evaluation Unit. A memo dated December 18, 1991, read:

“SUBJECT: ATTN. THE ZODIAC KILLER

Enclosed for the Lab are a Christmas card and a 118-page document entitled “Rules for Decoding the Mount Diablo Code” by [name redacted] … The FBI, the TEU is requested to analyze the enclosed document to determine if it has any validity in breaking the code used by the Zodiac killer in referenced airtel … Since 11/ 8/88. And individual who goes by the name of [name redacted] (true name [name redacted], DOB [redacted] has been contacting the San Francisco FBI claiming that [longer name redacted] DOB [redacted] of [address redacted] San Francisco, is the Zodiac killer.” The memo also stated that the suspect, name redacted, “claims that he was out of the country during the Zodiac murders but that his passport is lost and he cannot prove it.”

Richard - Excellent article.

Bettye Harden bragged that her code solving was 5 inches long in her message in the Salinas Library copy of Graysmith's Zodiac Killer Book just before her signature. Her Badlands "B" is identical.

5 inches along the 4 radians
54 Chestnut was the Hardens address in Salinas.
The LFand 4 dots symbol on the envelope where the return address goes. The symbol is made of 5 lines and four dots.
This notion has to be what the symbol represents.

Richard

If it was Bettye Harden, it's an odd statement by her BB. Interesting. Some believe it was Zodiac playing games.

5 Dashes and 4 dots
sounds like Morse Code
1927 Morse Code went on radio
26 letters + ten numbers + Alt = 37 characters.
The codes are on the lower frequency band in which amateur radio operators are allocated and start with a "Q" - the 17th letter

Very cerous

Thanks for the transparency,on Blaine Blaine,Richard.

I had not realized that Mr.Blaine had been so ''productive'' in the past.

Strange, that Mr.Blaine should include a Christmas card, with his Mount Diablo Code explanation [?].

Eccentric,to say the least.

Rubislaw 32 link
10/13/2019 05:32:36 am

Ah...so the inference is,the Mr.Blaine sent this ''Mount Diablo Code'' document,''twice'' in ten years....impersonating Richard Gaikowski.

SFPD Inspector Mike Maloney called Mr.Blaine : '' One of the top 3 Zodiac kooks,of all time.''.

It doesn't auger well, for anyone that might be persuaded that Mr.Gaikowski was the Zodiac ( ? ).

Mr.Gaikowski, has never been an official Zodiac suspect, anyway.

Oh dear.

Richard
10/13/2019 05:58:30 am

Richard Gaikowski is as likely Zodiac as I am.

Rubislaw 32 link
10/13/2019 06:49:03 am

Steady on....you might just encourage eccentrics,to believe that you are.

And,given the ''apparent'' quantity of '' Gyke believers '',at a certain site.

Apparently, they all intend to '' eat their hats '',if Mr.Gaikowski turns out ''not'' to be the Zodiac.

I think it has to be said that,Gareth Penn is a genuine eccentric, that was only too happy to assist investigators, with their enquiries.

That is quite a difference to someone who inferred that he was someone else, for whom he wished to incriminate.

And stranger still,Penn could still be correct about Joan Webster,as a Zodiac victim.Though Penn's accusations,as to Ms.Webster's perpetrator,and,as implied,the Zodiac...were a bit '' off target ''.

Lori F
10/13/2019 01:03:12 pm

Ha, I knew it Richard!!

Actually I have a couple of questions for you and Rubislaw.

How many "real" "official" Z suspects are still alive and who are they? I believe Penn is still with us??

AND, regarding the Halloween card, are the pictures/drawings added by Z actually drawn in his hand, or are they traced or pasted from some other sources? I keep thinking that if he actually drew them he was quite the artist, and if so, who among the "suspects" is actually known to be so talented?

I love this article Richard!

Richard
10/13/2019 01:20:48 pm

I don't believe any official suspects are alive Lori, because Arthur Leigh Allen was the only "official" suspect - the rest are just put forward by random people. Gareth Penn is still alive.

As for the Halloween Card, the skeleton on the card inner was added, but not drawn. The pumpkin was added, but not drawn. The eye in the knothole of the tree was the only one already present on the card The Zodiac added the other 12, along with "peek-a-boo you are doomed". Then he wrote 14 on the hand on the skeleton on the card outer, 4-TEEN on the card inner, along with BOO, the 7F looking symbol, Z and crosshairs. He didn't write the phrase beginning "From your secret pal, I feel it in my bones" , "but why spoil the game" and "happy halloween".

Nothing that I can add to Richard's excellent coverage,of the Halloween Card,Lori F.

The Zodiac included two small stickers, which are presumed that he might have added to the card, but decided not to....''Thinking of you'',and ''Home Sweet Home''.

Do you have an opinion,on the photograph that claims to be a middle-aged Donna Lass,in the mid-1980's ?

Lori F
10/15/2019 10:46:31 am

Thank you gentlemen. I don't know if it is because I do not have any children or if I am just dense, but stickers for some reason never occurred to me.

If you are asking me about the picture of Donna Lass, I am not sure which picture you are viewing. I have seen an aged one but I believe it was aged to be older than the 1980s. It would be great if you could post the link.

Thanks again.

Rubislaw 32 link
10/15/2019 04:54:53 pm

Well,it's nice to see you back, and taking an interest,Lori F.

I think the stickers represent Zodiac's considerations,to ''laying it on thick'' with a saccharine coated ''cosiness'' sarcasm, with Paul Avery....but thought better of it.Zodiac,I believe, was caught between respect and annoyance, with Avery.

But,at least Avery ''noticed'' Zodiac....as opposed to other journalists, who would prefer to ignore Zodiac.

With the Donna Lass photograph, you only need to access the Donna Lass section of ''possible victims'',at zodiackiller.com

The various ''plays'' on the photograph, and the photograph itself, are featured throughout the pages of posts.

The photograph first came to light, about 15 months ago...about 3 months ''after'' a news story about a Phillip Powers, who was accusing his dead grandfather,Kenneth Lester German,of being the Zodiac.

In those interim 3 months,Powers appears to have ''got into bed'',with a Detective Herminhaus,of the South Lake Tahoe Police. It was the South Lake Tahoe Police, who were originally tasked with investigating the disappearance of Ms.Lass.

So...and as I have suggested,it is possible that the South Lake Tahoe Police have ''leaked'' the photo,on the back of Phillip Powers' claims, regarding his grandfather.

The inference being that it was the FBI that spirited Ms.Lass away, through a witness protection program, unrelated to the Zodiac case....at all.

And for all these years, that the FBI failed to inform the South Lake Tahoe Police...thereby wasting many years of work, carried out by the police force,in trying to solve a ''phantom'' case.

And that, behind the scenes, the South Lake Tahoe Police, are ''incandescent'' with rage,at the FBI.

Mr.Powers has not once clarified the source of the photograph.

Mr.Powers...''or'' Detective Herminghaus ?

''There's the rub''.

Rubislaw 32 link
10/16/2019 06:32:58 am

Ok...I'll just take this opportunity,to ''jump the gun'' a little, albeit acknowledged ''hypothesis''.But,if it opens the debate,it's not such a bad thing [?].

And who is really to say,I was wrong about Detective Terry Poyser, whom I have accused of lying, from ''day one'' of his ridiculous claim of ''two envelopes and a secret lab.'' ( ? ).

The ''implications'' as they stand,on the Donna Lass photograph, are very serious,indeed...with respect to the authorities deciding to walk the Zodiac case ''out of time'',and into folklore.Particularly if they know who he is,but are confronted with too many judicial hurdles to overcome, with confidence.

The ''implications'' are, that the FBI used the Zodiac case,on a hoodwinking basis,to solve another problem.

As I believe I have illustrated,in the past, the likelihood that the FBI were ''less than pleased'' with the Riverside Police, for having delayed conveying knowledge, that they, the Riverside Police had elected to hand over the Bates correspondences,to the Post Office's Fraud Department....when it was ''obvious'' that any correspondences related to a murder investigation [...that of Cheri Jo Bates..],should have been handed over,to the known specialists,in this field...the FBI.

So,we might sympathize with the FBI,at that time....having lost the possibility of using the Bates correspondences,as potentially, actual evidence,in a court of law,at a later date.

But..the impications of a scenario, where the FBI ''might have'' helped themselves to an aspect of the Zodiac case....for entirely different purposes....is far,far worse.

And,in this scenario of the possibility that the South Lake Tahoe Police, are simply not in a position to ''diss'' fellow law enforcement agencies,as the FBI....means that this potential act,by the FBI will never really emerge, exposed to the public...without some bravery, for the truth,by members of the press.

Nowadays, the press are but ''toothless'' bystanders, only interested if there might be a story, worth waiting for, somewhere down the line.

Transparency,on this matter of ''was she, wasn't she adbucted''...may never come out.

Quite thought provoking Rubislaw. In the limited time I have to research this case, I have not been able to peruse very many posts so this is the first time I have become aware of this theory.

One item that has always bothered me about the Lass disappearance is the trailing pen line on her last record entry. Why does that happen? Did the FBI whisk her away and have her do that deliberately to throw us off? Or did someone actually interrupt her and pull her away from her desk causing the trail? Or maybe she had a seizure or health issue that caused her to lose control of the pen?

I think I read somewhere that she "clocked out" a little early but properly so we know what time she left. I don't remember if it was reported that anyone actually saw her walk out and if so was she alone.

I am not impressed with the Lass aging pictures. Although one does bear a resemblance, it is not a close resemblance if you look discernibly at the facial details.

And I am intrigued by the fact one of the suspects was working in the same place and living in the same town.

Thanks for this info!!

Good of you to make an honest appraisal,on what you see of it so far.

A precarious ''business'' sticking one's neck out too far, based on what little ''pinned down'' knowledge of circumstances, just prior to her disappearance.....seems to be.

Easy to be critical, but the thread at zodiackiller.com has allowed too much input,on subjective graphic and photographic tricks, which doesn't really help the ''undecided'' parties....I think.

Personally,I think that the basic facial structure and settings are quite persuading. In addition, every photograph of Donna, available, displays the same tilt of the head.

It's obvious that there is going to have to be more evidence, than exists,at present, and I just don't see that happening,as things stand.

The claims of Mr.Powers, with regard to his grandfather,Mr.German, went down like a led ballon,intially....and one feels that,if he is still convinced, then Detective Herminghaus represents his best chance,of further convincing.

So,I might suggest that Mr.Powers isn't going to change his position, and,as a member of the public also, feel at liberty to inform us,categorically, who came up with this specific photograph,in the first place.

Because it is obvious the Herminghaus,in his professional position, will be under orders,to say nothing further, unless instructed.

I would just appeal again to Ms.Apple Florez,as consenting messenger of Mr.Powers....that she does herself no favours,in the long term,by simply pursuing a tactic of reminders,of the photograph.

We,the public, require more information,if it is the case that certain interest parties wish to convey that it is the case that Donna was still alive,in the mid-1980's,and possibly beyond.

A further claim is that Donna, went on to have two children.

Well,that is a nice thought,if true.

Much better, than what the public has been led to believe....and for all these years.
