THE ZODIAC KILLER'S SEARCH FOR CONTROL

5/1/2024

PictureNewspaper clipping from November 1969
A psychologically disturbed individual rang the Jim Dunbar Show on October 22nd 1969 pretending to be the Zodiac Killer, to which the Bay Area murderer responded on December 20th 1969 by seemingly mocking the whole affair and claiming he was about to lose control and find more victims. It has been speculated by some that the Zodiac Killer appeared to somewhat mimic the murder scene of Frances Brown, who had been stabbed numerous times on December 10th 1945 at her 3941 North Pine Grove, Chicago apartment. The killer had left a sinister message on her apartment wall in red lipstick, reading "For Heaven's sake, stop me before I kill more. I cannot control myself".

This claim of a lack of control formed the basis of the Melvin Belli letter on December 20th 1969 in which Zodiac thrice feared he was about to lose control and needed help from Melvin Belli. I wasn't sure whether a strong connection could be forged between 1945 and the letter in 1969 until the discovery of a comprehensive analysis of the Zodiac Killer by Dr. Lawrence Z. Freedman, a psychiatric consultant to the National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence. Chairman of the Institute of Social and Behavioral Pathology at Chicago University, his in-depth psychological analysis of the Zodiac Killer in November 1969 was part of the World Book Science Service and was published statewide in the newspapers, including The Napa Valley Register on November 21st 1969.
Dr. Lawrence Z. Freedman (85), who was a pioneering forensic psychiatrist whose research and writings delved into the causes of violence, particularly assassinations, terrorism and mass murder, died on October 6th 2004 at his home in Chicago.

His detailed analysis in November 1969 of the Zodiac Killer's psyche, not only included the red lipstick writing from 1945, but heavily centered his findings around the perceived lack of control exhibited by Zodiac (see left for one example)..He also wrote "Afraid of others, envious, he has sought a fulfilment through violence. But his fear and self-loathing are now compounded by his realization that he lacks the power to control himself. Therefore he seeks that control from the outside himself, from capture and punishment.

Below are two newspaper headlines stating "Zodiac Killer Wants To Be Caught, Pleads For Control" and "Boasts by Zodiac really plea for his own control". It is extremely unlikely that a voracious newspaper reader such as the Zodiac Killer failed to see these numerous articles claiming his control was lacking. So did this detailed analysis by forensic psychiatrist, Dr. Lawrence Z. Freedman, one month earlier, shape the design of the Melvin Belli letter on December 20th 1969, with the Zodiac pleading for help and a wish for control

Nice pick on a Zodiac ''key word'' control, Richard.

Perhaps the Zodiac's need to emphasize it was his narrative, and would shape it as he saw fit. By the time of his Belli letter, the Zodiac was already feeling the heat from counterintelligence measures, such as simple suppression of his extortion (e.g. The San Jose letter and cryptogram of November 21st 1969).

Depending on if one is persuaded, the Zodiac went on to use this word ''control'' again.

July 19th 1978:'' I am the Zodiac and I am in control.''.

Circa early 1990 - the Flag/Totem Poles cipher: ''This is the Zodiac speaking. I am in control. Who masters be ready for more. Yours truly.''.

The FBI tried to palm that cipher off on Heriberto Seda. It's certainly not Seda (New York Zodiac). Seda had no cryptology learning skills. And last year in an interview, Seda claimed that he had seen none of his limited codes work published. These were just a few instances of leaving symbols written on napkins left behind.

''.Who masters be ready for more.''. ? And so it came to pass that the Zodiac became ''Scorpion'', with his five ciphers, culminating in S5 (Z180), circa 1997.

If the FBI really have nothing to hide, they should publish the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Scorpion ciphers. The (SF) Zodiac, a sometime visitor to New York City, for short breaks in the 1990's..

I have probably spent about 20 hours looking at these available Scorpion ciphers, but unfortunately there are too many ciphertext characters to have a good stab at the big cipher. There is a reasonable chance these our from our killer Rubislaw, albeit no current way to prove it. I see no purpose whatsoever in holding back the remaining ciphers after 33 years. Then again, it looks like the Cheri Jo Bates police report may be released after 150 years when everybody has turned to dust. I understand the concept of holding back certain information, but when 50+ years has passed, it's just plain pathetic.

Indeed, and this word ''control'' seems to have become a by-word for the case as a whole. Anyone might think the powers that be are protecting a formula for a super-bomb or such like - instead of a 1960's era tale about a compulsive small-time extortionist, who suddenly decided to start killing people, to make his apparent point clearer.

I've often wondered also why they did not release the other ciphers.

My mind wonders to if they contain identifiable items of a personal nature to the case, such as the victim or the victim's family. Or perhaps contain what they believe may be their only chance of identifying the killer. Such things as possible locations of smudges, or fingerprints or some such item.

No way to know though.

So what they gave us, they may believe is the only thing that is either something that they themselves can't address and may be trying to somewhat "crowdsource" assistance by sharing publicly.

Time will tell.

@Rub32
The Zodiac mocked Belli with that "Belli letter". He was never ever suicidial, depressed, lonely, skizo, or overly (in an unhealthy way) paranoid, etc.,etc...just assing around with Belli, the media, and especially with all those "secret pals" from Project-CIM. The Zodiac was his own agency and nothing was more fun then to set traps and let quaacks like Freedman run his mouth in public...although totaly incompetent for profiling The Zodiac, I speculate some geniouses from CIM wrote that "profile" and Dr. Lawrence Z. Freedman was just the frontman for that operation. Just another cunning plan, of so many before and later, which went immediatelly and massively southwards in the second Zody got notice about those articles. You can compare Freedman with Dr. Van Nyse of our days & time. Btw, what does that middle Z. in Freedmans name stand for, not perhaps for Zummkopf :)))
