THE SANTA CLAUS CARD (PART 2)

5/10/2020

Joan Lucinda Webster, a 25-year-old Harvard graduate, disappeared after her arrival at Boston's Logan International Airport on 28th November 1981, with her remains identified nearly nine years later on April 30th 1990 in Hamilton, Massachusetts. The envelope and card (shown below) were likely mailed to the parents of the missing woman on, or shortly after January 20th 1982 (because the postmark is missing the date). See previous article The Santa Claus Card.

If the Zodiac Killer had travelled from Los Angeles to Texas by car, either in late 1980 or January 1981, he could have travelled through Texas and picked up the Better Life Journal envelope after a moderate stay. His next port of call in the early months of 1981 would have been Atlanta, Georgia, where he claimed in a letter that he had now killed children and was targeting more.
Not everybody believed that 23-year-old Wayne Bertram Williams was responsible for the totality of the Atlanta Child Murders.
The letter, purportedly written by the Zodiac Killer, was postmarked Atlanta, Georgia and mailed to the television station WXIA-TV "11 Alive" at 1611 West Peachtree Street, 30308 on March 8th 1981.
Picture

In accompaniment to the Atlanta letter, the author wrote another short note stating "Please stop forced bussing or I will kill 3 more black boys in Atlanta in March". This was a business reply envelope postmarked Cleveland, OH, March 2nd 1981, bearing the press printed address "The Danbury Mint, Richards Avenue, P.O. Box 5260, Norwalk, Conn". Shortly before these letters (or after, depending on how you interpret the files), an anonymous communication postmarked Prince George's County, Maryland, February 17th 1981, addressed to "Editor of the Washington Post" and claiming to have information on the Atlanta killings, demanded that the editor place an advertisement in the newspaper stating "Daniel Please Call Home", after which the writer would initiate further contact with the editor of the Washington Post. At approximately 2:30 pm on the same date, March 18th 1981, the Washington Field Office contacted (redacted) and he advised that he and his newspaper would cooperate fully and place the "Daniel Please Call Home" advertisement in the March 19th 1981 edition. If the Zodiac Killer was in Cleveland or Maryland, was he going to initiate further contact with the editor of the Washington Post when he arrived in Washington - once he had finished his promise of murdering three more kids in Atlanta in March.

Did the Zodiac Killer commute between Atlanta, Cleveland and Maryland, before continuing eastwards toward New York. The question is, who is Daniel and did the Zodiac Killer initiate further contact with the Washington Post during his stop in Washington? Was the author insinuating his involvement in another missing person case? When the Zodiac Killer arrived in New York, he acquired the Santa Claus card in the latter months of 1981 (during the approach to the festive period). The card carried the return address of 654 Grand View Avenue, Ridgewood, New York. This New York Santa Claus card was soon to be placed inside the Better Life Journal Texas envelope

This message was placed inside an envelope bearing the press printed address "The Danbury Mint, Richards Avenue, P.O. Box 5260, Norwalk, Conn". The envelope was postmarked Cleveland, OH, March 2nd 1981. It was an advertisement for miniature pewter models of classic automobiles in eighteen major Sunday newspapers on March 1st 1981. A business reply envelope was enclosed with each advertisement. See file above.

Los Angeles to Atlanta is a virtual straight line across the country, through Texas. U.S. Route 20 or U.S. Highway 20 is an east–west United States highway that stretches from the Pacific Northwest all the way to New England. Once the Zodiac had collected the Santa Claus card in New York, did he continue north-east to Massachusetts (Boston's Logan International Airport) where he abducted and murdered Joan Webster? Then, a month later, on January 21st 1982 (or thereabouts) he used both envelope and card he picked up on his travels, mailing them in unison to the Webster family at Glen Ridge, New Jersey. The Zodiac Killer may have had nothing to do with Joan Webster's abduction and murder, but the Atlanta letter does place him on that trajectory 9 months prior to her disappearance, presuming any, or all of these communications have anything to do with the Bay Area murderer.

It's great to see the map , on show , Richard , and focuses the mind more on elements to the Joan Webster case , and the time proximity of 1981 and 1982 , in particular . The last time that Joan was last seen alive , all the way down to Austin ( the capital of Texas ) , where one part of the Santa Claus card was fashioned .

I would say that a good percentage of those with a keen interest in the Zodiac's Z408 cipher , at least concede that the Zodiac was likely to have been the '' concerned citizen '' .A man in a rush to spare his own blushes for the tameness of its solution's first publication , with a surplus of spelling errors on view which , rather took the wind out of the Zodiac's sails .

And,having sent that '' concerned citizen '' 's letter off to Detective Sergeant Lynch , perhaps the Zodiac vowed that he wouldn't use his old typewriter again ( ? ) .Those '' dropped a's '' were a bit of a giveaway .

Moving forward , almost 13 years , to 1982 , and suddenly the '' dropped a's '' are on view again - but in the shortest letter , the Zodiac probably ever wrote :

Please ,

where can I write you , ? .

Indeed , brevity and '' necessity '' are on show .

'' Brevity '' not to reveal the telling faults of the typewriter .

'' Necessity '' , for that is the only typewriter that the Zodiac could lay his hands on , when he needed to .

But the Zodiac still gave the game away to the FBI , and rescinding on the vow that the Zodiac made to himself , never to use that old typewriter for his nefarious hoaxing purposes , might still be his undoing .

March 8th 1981 :

''...Buy the way...''

Are the Zodiac's '' By's '' interchangeable ?

By = Buy = Bye ?

By D By = Bye Dee ,Bye

As claimed : '' Nice freak clue around Darlene's case. Dee audio...''

Ok, so what next?
What's it going to take to get this case looked at seriously by LE that can actually solve it??

Well , just hoping that an '' un-peeling '' of sorts , has already started , Toots .

If the Brenda Page case was recognised as '' Zodiac link '' candidate , then there is a chance , that the '' un-peeling '' has already started .

How does it play out ? Could be many ways but , unless law enforcement are confident of prosecuting the Zodiac , successfully , for at least one murder , his exposing may never come about .

What seems to be apparent is , that law enforcement are loathe to risk trying to nail him,as an extortionist only .

The high-profile nature of the case and of a suspect put in the dock , is such , that prosecutors get just one chance only , to succeed .

Much at stake . They have to be confident enough , to be sure of winning .

Given that the Zodiac is still alive , of course .

I'll stick with the numbers game , or I'll get in to trouble .

But , I believe that the Bay area victims and Joan Webster are too damaged as '' first wave '' .And , that there may be three further cases , with one '' first wave '' damaged .

Leaving two possibles , for '' first wave '' prosecution .

Then also , if anything before Bay area , as '' second wave '' plea bargaining .

But , just an opinion .

Eve kindly contacted me back and has a new post today on Websleuths with updated information on Joan's thread. Sadly, no extra information on the Santa Claus card. Great to get a reply however.

'' Excellent '' , in a qualified way , Richard . The more talk gets out , in a positive manner , the better , since official law enforcement do see and hear .

What's the first thing that any senior law enforcement agent or politician does , worth his salt , every morning ?

Answer : Read the newspapers . You get the drift ( ? ) .

Yes , I have had no great expectations , given what we appear to have found , at this site . But , that could change , now . I have seen perceived evidence , in the last two years of subliminal messages through the public media , for the Zodiac to give himself up , and on at least three occasions .

We remain hopeful .

The McDonald's letter places him back in the locale in 1988, which would bring the suspected correspondences to 5 from that region. Chattanooga is 110 miles from Atlanta

The Danbury Mint is a division of MBI, Inc. that markets a variety of collectibles. Danbury Mint historically marketed high quality medals and ingots produced by others exclusively for them. The company also sold numerous other collectible offering including plates, bells, sculptures, etc. Danbury Mint is well known for its 1:24 scale die-cast vehicles, including a now discontinued James Bond's DB5. This business reply envelope from Norwalk, Connecticut is the closest we can get thus far to Logan International Airport - 147 miles. But is only 46 miles from the Webster family home at Glen Ridge, NJ.

Richard
5/11/2020 12:00:17 am

The Danbury Mint was founded in Westport, Connecticut, by Ralph Glendinning and Ted Stanley in 1969, as a subsidiary of Glendinning Companies. Their first product was a series of medals commemorating the Apollo 11 moon landing.

Fascinating , Richard , and we know beyond reasonable doubt , that the Zodiac had a thing about stamps and model making . Probably numismatics also , then ( ? ) .

Yes , you covered the topic of the Chattanooga link , a few months ago , and good that there exists , at your site , a reference to this subject matter .

I have started to think about the Temple , Texas letter to Randolph Hearst , at the S F . Examiner , a few days after Patty Hearst's capture , in 1973.....from a certain '' Brigadier General Matrix '' .
All very Stanley Kubrick - esque , and may be the giveaway that it was the Zodiac who threatened the lives of Kubrick and his family members , in the wake of the UK release of '' A clockwork Orange ''.

Temple , Texas , is about half-way between Austin and Waco .

Rubislaw 32 link
5/11/2020 03:30:43 am

That should read September 20th 1975 , for the Temple , Texas letter .

On the whole subject of the Apollo space missions , one might like to note that its '' epicentre '' was Houston Control , Houston , Texas .

My interpretation , anyway is , that the Zodiac was much more interested in Astronomy , than he ever was about Astrology . But , if a daily newspaper reader , then Astrology is difficult to miss ( ? ) .

The Danbury Mint is , of course , owned by the '' Global '' company , '' Coca Cola ''.

You don't mess with them , as the Princess Diana Trust Foundation found out , to their bankruptcy cost .

Only one of the murders in the Atlanta child killings was classified as "Undetermined - Body never found". So, is it possible the "Zodiac" letter addressed to "Editor of the Washington Post" and claiming to have information on the Atlanta killings, and demanding that the editor place an advertisement in the newspaper stating "Daniel Please Call Home", actually should have read "Darren Please Call Home". Just prior to the letters described in the article, the FBI were detailing the discovery of his school mathematics book. Darron Glass went missing on September 14th 1980. What is the betting the author of the letter to the editor of the Washington Post meant "Darron" not "Daniel" and just made a mistake. Claiming or interjecting himself into a missing person case, just like Joan Webster - and just like Donna Lass.

Richard
5/11/2020 01:09:25 am

Darron Glass lived at the 2200 block of Memorial Drive southeast in Atlanta, Georgia. This was just 5 miles from 1611 West Peachtree Street, where "Zodiac" mailed the Atlanta letter. But more crucially, he was last seen at Glenwood Avenue SE & 2nd Avenue SE, just under 6 miles from the television station WXIA-TV "11 Alive" at 1611 West Peachtree Street.

Richard

Santa Claus card - "Please, where can I write you".
Washington Post letter - "Daniel Please call home".

Both using "please". Both missing persons. One use "call", one uses "write".

Regarding the topic of model making...
Hasn't one of Zodiac's mailings to have been dropped off at
the mailbox at 2450 Van Ness, SF, CA?

Which was (at that time) right next to Chan’s Trains & Hobbies (now out of business).

The other letter was dropped of at 23rd & Taraval St is right next to McCoppin Square, a park.

Frank McCoppin (July 4, 1834 in County Longford, Ireland – May 26, 1897 in San Francisco, California) was the first Irish-born, and foreign-born Mayor of San Francisco.

In 1862, he was married to Elizabeth Bird Van Ness in San Francisco, thereby becoming the son-in-law of former mayor James Van Ness.

McCoppin was a Scottish national hero and an inspiration to the remaining Coppin’s of the UK.

Interesting that Z dropped off 2 letters in these places.

With your reference to '' US Route 20 '' , Richard , that facilitates a physical geographic connection to Los Angeles ,this is what I have always suspected , as someone who believes that the Zodiac was born and raised , a Texan .

Those who are prepared to cut the Zodiac some slack , over being '' above average '' intelligence , would mostly be inclined to believe that he graduated from a University .

I believe that time , was the early sixties , when the California '' scene '' for young people was becoming a very exciting proposition and , if the Zodiac was as keen on motoring , as most believe that he was , could well have been making frequent runs to the West Coast , to experience '' The Happening '' , as it unfolded .

Rubislaw 32 link
5/11/2020 01:21:20 pm

Just to put it in perspective , most under-graduates attend actual classes , at University , for a total of half of each year .

Often '' bags of time '' on their hands , to do other things .

Although an obscure observation , and clearly '' S C '' is intended to be read as the abbreviated form for '' Santa Claus '' , is there any more to it , than this ?

The '' S '' might be seen by the presumed Zodiac , as a snake ( ? ) .

The '' C '' might be seen by the presumed Zodiac . as a crab ( ? )

S = Snake = Slippery

C = Crab = Clawing

Rubislaw 32 link
5/12/2020 03:35:52 am

Philosophical Zodiac ?

'' The snake and the crab '' in Ancient Greek is the equivalent of the modern idiom : '' Pot calling the kettle black ''

Since the movement of both creatures is far from direct , this is as much as to say that the pot should not call the kettle black .

Rubislaw 32 link
5/12/2020 03:56:12 am

In Latin :

Snake = Serpens

Crab = Cancer

What do Serpens and Cancer have in common ?

Serpens and Cancer are Star Constellations that can be seen in the night sky .

Rubislaw 32 link
5/12/2020 03:10:32 pm

With the spartan content of the Santa Claus card , we observe :

Please ,

where can I write you , ? .

Undoubtedly a written request but , strictly incorrect use of the English Language which , should read :

where can I write to you ?

An example , perhaps , of the Zodiac's use of '' homely '' American English .

In Simon & Garfunkel ' s iconic album '' Bridge over Troubled Waters '' , there is a song , entitled : '' Why don't you write me ? '' . Again the deliberately incorrect , but '' homely '' application of language .

Indicating , yet again , that the Zodiac was raised in an American cultural setting .

Richard
5/12/2020 03:30:40 pm

I believe it's American slang, but may stand corrected.

Given a plausible link , now , between the Zodiac and the Joan Webster case , there are greater persuasions that the Zodiac would have visited the north-east coast , seeing as it seems to have been his want , to combine tourism with his correspondences .

All work and no play makes the Zodiac a dull lad ?

When first then , if the Zodiac was not local to that area ?

A visit , perhaps , to Oak Island , Nova Scotia ( ? ) in August of 1974 , and advantage taken to keep his hand in with the Patty Hearst kidnapping .

A letter was sent to Radio Station WHN , postmarked Truro , Nova Scotia , and dated August 29th 1974 , with a ring of familiarity to the presumed Zodiac's Albany Letter , sent one year earlier :

Pat Heurst is alive and well in San Jose ,Calif . Mr.Heurst must not worry . She is alright , she has made up her mind . Yes she has .
Signed Mr.X
For the S.L.A.

Reference : HEARNAP FBI File 19 , Pages 905 - 908 .

Rubislaw 32 link
5/15/2020 05:55:27 am

...The letter mentioned , above ( ? ) .

OK...it's spartan , and written in capital letters . Always difficult , because it gives the amateur less options on comparison of styles of writing .

But , a '' persuader '' might be , the writing of the word '' CALiF '' ( ? )

Yes, the '' hallmark '' employment of the '' candlestick i '' from the author .

And , where did this author hit on the idea of employing '' Mr.X '' , as his signing name ? Well ,it's very common usage , anyway , as a pseudonym . e.g. post - war espionage ; Malcom X etc.

The Zodiac - a man beginning to get used to using Newark Airport , on a regular basis , and viewing short tourism '' options '' , now on the East Coast { ? ) . I think so .

Rubislaw 32 link

I have posted on the curse of Oak Island , Richard , as potentially related to the Zodiac's solution to the 340 cipher .

This includes a reference to the Truro , Nova Scotia letter of August 29th 1974 , and acknowledges you and your site , in relation to the '' Santa Claus Card '' , with its persuasion of an '' East Coast Zodiac '' after the Bay area reign of terror.

Reference Rubislaw 32's solution to the Zodiac's 340 cipher , at the Zodiackillermystery site .

Nice to see the relatively smaller sites '' doing the business '' ( ? ) .

Rubislaw 32's solution , was recently part of a presentation , made to politician's , with respect to the hounding out of office , of a Chief of Constabulary and representations made on behalf of family members of victims of crime , including the re-investigation of the murder of Dr.Brenda Page , July 14th 1978 , and the case file of Joan Webster .

Richard
5/15/2020 09:29:17 am

Certainly in the right area Rubislaw. There appears a concentration of letters from the east coast in 1974 and 1981 related to Zodiac case and the SLA. It is all about untangling who was responsible for what. I may have another delve into the SLA files again after a brief respite.

This is exciting Rubislaw...onward!

Rubislaw 32 link
5/15/2020 10:07:05 am

On the Truro ,Nova Scotia airmail envelope , the author has affixed a 10 cent stamp when , the true cost should have been 15 cents .

Strange how , in Rubislaw 32's 340 cipher solution , the presumed Zodiac makes a joke about '' ten cents '' .

The postmark states August 29th 1974

The arrival of the letter , to the New York Radio Station , September 4th 1974 .So , the letter took 6 days which , probably accounts for the under-paying , by 5 cents ( ? ) .

Two later , on September 6th 1974 , the Radio Station hand the letter over to the FBI . The FBI then alert their offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco , of its existence .

I have ascertained that the postage stamp employed was :

Canada # 594 10 cents Forests ,Scenic Pictorals ( 1972 )

Naturally , little to go on , but the '' X '' is quite Zodiac , with its top left-hand tail , as well as '' CALiF '' .

Rubislaw 32 link
5/15/2020 10:57:20 am

I see now , that on a further Page 909 , of the HERNAP File 19 , that the Bureau were actually scared of the Truro , Nova Scotia letter , intimating that the TV networks were hungry for anything and obviously concerned about putting out reports of , both a San Jose whereabouts for Patty Hearst , and speculation on how far the SLA tentacles may have reached .

Canada ? A foreign country ?

The SLA were on the march ( ! ) . A potentially big news story - only if largely a creation ( ? ) .

Just maybe....that was the Zodiac's intention ( ? ) .

To '' Internationalise '' the SLA , with the Nova Scotia postmark .

Rubislaw 32 link
5/15/2020 10:37:42 pm

This Truro, Nova Scotia letter of August 29th 1974 , I spotted about a year ago , tucked away in the HEARNAP files , and certainly not forgotten it .

We have , in addition to the author's desire that word might get out , of a spread of SLA activity to Canada , the very fact that the author sent the letter to a Radio Station , knowing that '' chins might wag '' in the most conducive of places ( a media agency ) , before the FBI got their hands on the letter - which is what happened for two days .

In addition , the probable under-paying of postage was deliberate .Clearly , this letter ended up travelling '' surface mail '' and , as a consequence , took 6 days to arrive . Plenty of time , for the letter's author , to get away from where investigating officers might descend ( Truro , Nova Scotia ) .

But , perhaps an even bigger clue that this letter might be from the Zodiac is , the mention of '' San Jose '' as to the whereabouts of Patty Hearst . San Jose where the Zodiac , in all probability , had had scrapes with the Highway Patrol cops . San Jose , indeed , whose police force represented , in effect , the Zodiac's exposure as a fraud , with the arrest and conviction of Karl Werner finally proof positive that some of the Zodiac's claims were lies .

And , San Jose being just 35 miles away from Randolph Apperson Hearst's private residence , at Hillsborough , San Mateo . The suggested proximity of Patty to her family , bound to cause an extra sense of immediacy , and pushing on police resources , in an effort to find Patty .

With the possibility of Nova Scotia entering the Zodiac equation , this would be , undoubtedly , for tourism purposes , with a chance of open roads , in the summer , beckoning for one the Zodiac's first loves - motoring . And , like Barry Newman in '' Vanishing Point '' , I do believe that the Zodiac often revelled in marathon distances .

Cars and Words were the Zodiac's '' thing '' - which made him a manoeuvring and menacing hoaxer .

Rubislaw 32 link
5/15/2020 11:56:33 pm

On a timeline basis , the Nova Scotia letter comes 8 weeks following the '' Red Phantom '' letter to Count Marco's Editor , on July 4th 1974 .
And , if to be believed , the '' Red Phantom '' genuinely angry .

Perhaps , more a case of the Zodiac getting his knickers in a twist , over how counter-intelligence were dealing with his hoaxing antics , generally ( ? ) , at that first half of 1974 .

I believe that there was more , anyway , from the Zodiac , that had arrived , SLA / Hearst related and , the A friend / Angela Davis typed letter of February 10th 1974 , does seem '' Very Zodiac '' , as one example in particular .

Perhaps the date ( August 29th 1974 ) and place ( North-East coast ) are clues to the Zodiac situation , at the time ( ? ) .

An end of a long summer vacation , on the West Coast , and back to work , now somewhere much further East .( ? ) . Maybe , even Western Europe .
