THE ROAMING HITCHHIKER

8/23/2020

Picture
In the aftermath of the double murder of Koy Ien Saechao (48) and Choy Fow Saelee (40) on April 22nd 1986, a hitchhiker reported to law enforcement of an "accident" on Highway 99. This case is not only interesting because of the May 6th 1986 "Zodiac" letter, but because it mirrored almost exactly the murder and attempted murder of Darlene Ferrin and Michael Mageau at Blue Rock Springs on July 4th 1969. It also could have mirrored the prelude to the questionable Kathleen Johns abduction on March 22nd 1970, in that Koy Ien Saechao and Choy Fow Saelee may have been ushered to the side of Highway 99 before their murder. It was surmised they had been murdered between 3:15 am and 7:30 am that morning, in what appears to be a motiveless and random attack.

The case for the hitchhiker being the murderer was considered on the basis of this line in the 1986 letter: "They were killed by a freeway. The Blue Meannies almost caught me". The idea being, the hitchiker reported the murders as an "accident" in a cat and mouse game with authorities. But how can we determine whether or not the hitchhiker was the author of the 1986 letter, or possibly the Zodiac Killer? The link between the 1986, 1987 and 1969 Zodiac communications strongly suggests one author responsible for all five letters, however, this doesn't tell us whether the hitchiker was a concerned citizen performing his civic duty, or somebody toying with the police, who failed to provide any details about himself - and has never been identified to this day.

Picture
Either the newspaper reporting in this case was shockingly bad, the hitchhiker was extremely concerned, or he was playing games with the police for at least 70 minutes over a 66 mile journey. The Appeal-Democrat newspaper reported that "Saechao and Saelee, who lived on Dorman Avenue with four children and a grandchild, were sprayed with 15 rounds of small-caliber gunfire as they sat in their car at Highway 99 and Interstate 5, where they had apparently stopped to rest. An unidentified hitchhiker was sought for questioning in connection with the killings. The hitchhiker had flagged down a California Highway Patrol officer in East Nicolaus shortly after the killings to report an auto accident where the couple were found". This hitchhiker apparently flagged down an East Nicolaus patrolman 19 miles north of the crime scene.

The Sacramento Bee ran an article stating "Two victims, Choy Fow Saelee and Koy Ien Saechao, were found dead in their car by a hitchhiker about 6:30 am. Sometime later the hitchhiker reported what he had seen to authorities in Marysville". Marysville (or Marysville Police Department) is 35 miles north of the crime scene, and 16 miles further north from East Nicolaus, along California State Route 70.

The Sacramento Bee ran a much more comprehensive article and wrote "Police discovered the bodies, sitting upright in the front seat of the Mercury, after a hitchhiker told a Chico California Highway Patrol Officer he had witnessed a car wreck at the freeway interchange, Sgt. Bob Burns said". Chico is 77 miles north of the crime scene, a 90 minute car journey, and 42 miles north of Marysville.

So, either the information given by law enforcement to the newspapers was wildly inaccurate, the newspapers had reported it incorrectly, or the hitchhiker traveled an extraordinary distance, contacting at least three police forces over a 77 mile journey. Had the latter been the case, the hitchhiker was either an extremely diligent and concerned citizen, or he was playing games in the aftermath of the murder, possibly writing "They were killed by a freeway. The Blue Meannies almost caught me" just two weeks later. The reported contacts with the hitchhiker were at least consistent with somebody traveling north along Highway 99 and California State Route 70, from Sacramento to Chico. Had the hitchhiker continued north, he would have arrived in Redding, California. To the west was the city of Eureka in Humboldt County.

Because we can confidently authenticate this communication to the Zodiac Killer, it leaves us with the possibility that the release of the Robert Graysmith book may have awoken the Zodiac Killer from his slumber. This crime didn't receive widespread coverage throughout California, so the Zodiac Killer must have been extremely fortunate to have stumbled across a crime that mirrored two of his previously claimed attacks, accompanied by a mysterious and elusive hitchhiker, only a matter of months after Robert Graysmith's Zodiac hit the bookshelves and placed the Zodiac Killer back into the spotlight. Or, it had rewoken his desire for murder once again  - and he was responsible for the murders of
Choy Fow Saelee and Koy Ien Saechao in the early morning of April 22nd 1986.

Whether Zodiac committed this murder or wrote the letter I think the timing is definitely a response to yellow book. Other than the Paul Stine murder, and less likely that of Robert Salem, this 2 week interval would be the soonest post-murder correspondence Zodiac possibly sent, but it is a reasonable allotment to await potential advancement in the investigation and thus he could feel secure in making the claim. If Zodiac did kill the couple after two weeks he could be fairly certain that the media had concluded their coverage, thus prompting him to court further attention. This has always been an interesting one to me. Thanks man

Richard
8/23/2020 10:24:03 am

Cannot disagree with any of that Drew. These two letters (1986 and 1987) are currently the most interesting to me because they would demonstrate whether Zodiac was still alive. I feel they are certainly genuine - and as such can eliminate certain suspects. These murders, irrespective of whether Zodiac was involved, can at least be tied to a specific letter, as opposed to many of the communications subsequent to 1971. The remoteness of the crime and lack of potential leads, along with the winding down of the coverage (as you said), probably made him feel comfortable enough to pen a letter. I've always wondered Drew, was a sketch of the hitchhiker ever created, or did they never consider him a suspect in the crime, just a material witness. I am fairly certain that the 1986 letter was never connected to the murders, because I had never read anything to this effect. I did furnish the details to Sacramento PD, but they never responded. Maybe they did make the connection but haven't stated as such. It's a shame, because these murders could answer so many questions. C'est la vie

Richard
8/23/2020 10:29:14 am

Do you think Drew, that "The Blue Meannies almost caught me" has any relation to the hitchhiker? If not, I'm trying to wrangle why the author would choose this line. All the other information on the letter was accurate, so you'd think this line had some significance.

Drew
8/23/2020 10:40:35 am

"These murders, irrespective of whether Zodiac was involved, can at least be tied to a specific letter, as opposed to many of the communications subsequent to 1971."
Absolutely. The author doesn't go into great detail that couldn't be gleamed from news coverage but I believe it was written by either the killer or Zodiac himself. I don't think it was someone other than the killer pretending to be Zodiac.

I certainly hope they investigated the crime thoroughly but the lack of coverage seems to suggest that they didn't. The Zodiac community doesn't seem to give a lick about it.

Drew
8/23/2020 10:44:02 am

The letter definitely is cleverly implying that they were the hitchhiker in my opinion. I have zero doubt that they were referencing this little covered crime and that they read about the hitchhiker or they were the hitchhiker/killer.

Drew
8/23/2020 10:57:30 am

If the letter writer here was the killer and wanted to pin the crime on Zodiac there are two probable motives. Either he wanted to distance himself from the crime because he feared capture or he wanted to start his own pseudo Zodiac campaign. Without knowing more about the crime it will remain uncertain but it seems unlikely that there was any motive for the crime beyond the opportunity it presented to write about it.

Richard

And yes your post on the forum is good and not a ramble. I believe Kevin Robert Brooks is very likely correct, because you have to look at the last paragraph of the Exorcist letter. He threatens more murder if his note is not published, then implicitly states " If I do not see this note in your paper, I will do something nasty, which you know I'm capable of doing" (absent of full stop). There is only one thing Zodiac is capable of doing "To Kill". Not only does it end the paragraph perfectly, it can actually be designed from the symbols, which was by no means guaranteed. And as you pointed out, with heavy emphasis on the K. What I also like about Kevin's solution is the T is capitalized, as is the word Kill. We also have to remember these symbols weren't publicized, so when the SLA letter arrived just five days later, with the entire emphasis of the letter designed around the word "Kill", in quotation marks, it makes you wonder, is this just sheer coincidence, or was the author of the SLA letter effectively giving us the answer to the whitewashed symbols. If we could call the Exorcist symbols runic in design, then the Norse reference would be a clincher. Although they do look more oriental.

Drew
8/23/2020 11:12:20 am

Thank you for this Richard! Those are great points I had't considered about Kevin's theory and you have convinced me. I suppose because we are discussing an arrangement both theories (To Kill and 340 reference) could be true. He is both completing his threat while setting up his next correspondence and doing so in a manner like the rest of the letter (Mikado reference, score at the bottom, etc) suggesting that he is Zodiac without using the name.

Richard
8/23/2020 11:25:25 am

I must stress however, I'm confident that the SLA letter isn't Zodiac, so if the Exorcist letter is connected by use of "kill" to the SLA letter, I tend to believe neither is Zodiac. Just somebody imitating Zodiac. However, I must concede, whomever created the Exorcist letter (if not Zodiac) they did a good job. The alternative, is the Exorcist letter is genuine Zodiac and the "kill" connection is accidental.

Richard
8/23/2020 11:36:59 am

But I agree with your observation that it seems rather pointless creating an SLA letter referencing "other people" rather than himself, bearing in mind he's the biggest narcissist in the Bay Area, not using SF Chronicle or Calif, not using his introduction, not using a running total or crosshairs, but expecting people to guess who it was. If your needing law enforcement, at least use the crosshairs that takes a second to draw. It seems rather a bland correspondence, with little meaning other than to promote the SLA. And Zodiac was a self publicist, not the advertiser of others. Also, why not misspell in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th letters of 1974. All of which again showed little to connect them to Zodiac. Why waste the one stamp.

Drew
8/23/2020 12:26:29 pm

It shall remain confounding I am sure. We have to choose which elements are most likely coincidence.

If Zodiac wrote the Exorcist letter and the SLA letter was from the SLA then 'to kill' is a coincidence. That doesn't seem likely but neither does the SLA writing the Exorcist. I am not sure it is likely that the SLA letter would have benefited the SLA either. If it was done by them the location and intention are curious.

Why would the SLA write a letter to SF newspaper pretending to be Zodiac without using the name and then send a note threatening to kill before attempting to negotiate in a public forum allegedly for the good of society? It is hard to see logic in that but they were of course a curious crew. The murder of Marcus Foster and then later confronting the unstoppable force in LA were so both such wildly misguided self-destructive decisions that it is hard to rationalize anything they did.

If we accept that it is a coincidence that Zodiac wrote of the SLA the day before the kidnapping... one way to rationalize the lack of effort and self-promotion in the SLA letter is that he had just composed the persuasively well-crafted Exorcist letter and like in August 69 when they asked for further details he was both published and snubbed (whitewashing symbols) so he responds with a quick note of clever proof. If they had published the SLA letter then it would have been self-serving in so far as it would have completed his Exorcist message. Clearly he was particular about such things. It is actually very much in league with your theory of the cipher solutions.

Our third option is that the kidnapping timing is a coincidence and the Zodiac traits are from a well studied hoaxer perhaps not unlike the college kid who wrote to the LA Times.

At any rate I have enjoyed this!

Richard

Good points as always Drew. We need that extra clincher. We'll leave it there, unless some divine inspiration comes along.

"man who confessed the slayings in letters to Gibson Publications"
(examiner and chronicle too)

I was wondering if Zodiac read (at least 2 articles) mentioning Gibson Publications (aka Vallejo Times-Herald).

Was inspired to use a "Gibson" Greeting card (dripping pen) for next cipher.

Also from what I read the "Halloween card" was determined to be Gibson and many think a solution to the 340 which came with the first Gibson greeting card as well.

I bet he read virtually every article about him from the Bay Area newspapers Shawn, including this one.

I think the Dripping Pen card logo is Jesters Greetings cards, and Halloween card was Gibson.

Ansar
8/23/2020 05:48:59 pm

The more I see that 86 letter the more I’m convinced it’s an authentic Zodiac communication. If that’s a fake it’s a damn good fake. The 3rd Sacramento Bee article is strange because the way it is worded is so similar to the appeal-democrat one yet they seem to have inserted “Chico” into there by accident despite it being nowhere near the crime scene. But then the other two locations aren’t exactly nearby either. Is it normal in America to have highway officers patrolling areas miles and miles outside of their locality? In the U.K. it’s unusual for that to happen. Here in Birmingham if there’s an accident or a crime on the motorway you didn’t really get highway officers around who are based out of Coventry, Leicester etc, they tend to be local. The obvious conclusion is that the hitchhiker really did report it to three different police forces all miles apart and yet nobody thought that odd? Nobody drew up a sketch or even a mental image of him? Why even report it more than once

Richard
8/24/2020 01:16:50 am

It appears like the mention of "Chico" was directly taken from Sgt Burns. Either way, reporting it once would seem enough, especially if you're supposedly hitchhiking around without a vehicle. Officers patrol their jurisdiction and were apparently approached by this man. What set this man apart that he was described as a hitchhiker on all three occasions? What does a hitchhiker look like? Unless he mentioned it thrice. But I would assume when hitchhiking, your primary objective is getting to your location, not gallivanting around the streets reporting an accident several times. It is extremely odd Ansar.

Mo
8/25/2020 12:06:33 am

We know from LHR and BRS (and likely LB) that Zodiac had access to a vehicle(s).

So, was Zodiac pretending to be a hitchhiker? Or, maybe there was truly a hitchhiker who saw some sort of a car chase and thought it was a wreck?

Why would Zodiac abandon the safer option of a getaway vehicle for the much riskier alternative of being a pedestrian on a freeway?

The slaying, coupled with the letter, definitely suggests Zodiac. However, Zodiac was also known to try to take credit for other people’s crimes.

Richard
8/25/2020 12:42:26 am

If it was Zodiac, then I suspect he would want to report the murders as an accident in absence of his vehicle. Claiming to be a hitchhiker separates him from any vehicle. It's a tough one Mo. There would have been a vehicle parked on the hard shoulder, absent of any damage to the car body, but a broken window with strewn glass. If he was a hitchhiker on foot, one would have suspected a prolonged view of the vehicle and dead couple, as opposed to a fleeting view. If he was a passenger in a vehicle having been given a lift, why wouldn't the owner of the vehicle be present alongside him when he reported it to highway patrol or respective police stations. Was he the only witness to the accident? Why didn't he report the presence of a third party in the person who he was riding with? If he reported it to three police forces, why didn't he offer his name, get asked his name - and why would all three detail him as a hitchhiker? Many questions, but if he was on foot at the time seeking a lift, wouldn't it have been common sense to approach the parked Mercury of the couple to seek a lift?

Mo
8/25/2020 01:05:24 am

I can’t imagine the police didn’t ask the hitchhiker his name. That’s the first thing they do. Perhaps he gave them a bogus name and said he didn’t have an ID. But there’s got to be a name in the police files somewhere even if it’s a bogus one.

I agree it’s possible the slain couple were good samaritans who offered their killer a ride. In that case, the gun was probably disposed of somewhere near the crime scene. I doubt the killer still had the gun on him when he was speaking to the police. Talk about brazen.

I suppose the witness hitchiked his way to Marysville. I can only imagine the good fortune of the second Good Samaritan, not realizing he was giving a ride to a possible killer/Zodiac.

Richard
8/25/2020 04:13:59 am

Irrespective of whether this crime was Zodiac or not, this couple apparently decided to take a rest on a hard shoulder of an interstate just a few miles (about 3) past Sacramento. The contention therefore would be tiredness or fatigue, because they had traveled for at least 1 hr 45 minutes from Merced in the very early hours. Or possibly they needed a toilet break. They could have done this a few minutes earlier, or pulled off the interchange, not withstanding the fact they were just 45 minutes from home. Or they had been ushered to the side of the road on a ruse. If I were driving on a road in darkness and was faced with an unknown vehicle (devoid of sirens) signalling me to pull over, I would ignore them. But amazingly some people do not presuppose anything bad could happen and inexplicably pull over. We have a couple of decent options [1] They pulled over to take a break and were just extremely unlucky a lunatic was passing by in that time period, or [2] The murders and position of their vehicle was a result of actions caused by the assailant. The position and location of the vehicle errs me toward scenario 2. I personally don't believe the Kathleen Johns story or that Zodiac was involved, but that certainly doesn't exclude him from adopting it (as he may have done) and replicating such a crime years later, driven by the publicity of the Graysmith book. It may be unlikely Zodiac had a hand in these murders, but I have little doubt he was claiming them. However, that shouldn't exclude law enforcement from reviewing the evidence from the 1986 murders with respect to the Bay Area murders and the multiple array of ballistic evidence in this case. It is the latest possible connection to a letter/murder there is.

Richard - The ultimate roaming hitchhiker was Stanley D. Baker - 13 letters - here is proof he killed Salem.

"When asked about the murder of Robert Salem though, Stanley Dean Baker smiled and said under oath, "I respectfully refuse to answer on the grounds that it might incriminate me." Salem, a San Francisco lamp designer, was stabbed, mutilated and nearly decapitated in his posh San Francisco apartment in April 1970. The murder was attributed to a Zodiac killer copycat. It is still unsolved. Baker was in the Bay area at the time."

According to a 2009 story by Ruben Rosario in the St. Paul Pioneer Press newspaper, when "A Current Affair" caught up with Baker, he was a top salesman at a sporting goods store. After the television expose, Baker lost his job. Rosario reported that Baker died of liver cancer in Bemidji, Minn., on July 22, 1994.
