THE MURDER OF PATRICIA KING

With virtually no coverage of this crime on the internet other than a few newspaper clippings, I have attempted to expand on the murder of Patricia King (20) at Diablo Valley College, Pleasant Hill on March 5th 1970. The college layout has altered over the last 48 years, but we can pinpoint the key locations based on the wording in the newspapers. Patricia King of 2200 Lisa Lane, Pleasant Hill had attended Diablo Valley College for her gym class at 7:00 pm on Thursday evening. Her classmates informed investigators that Patricia usually only stayed for the first hour of her gym class, which is what transpired that evening, when the young woman left the building at approximately 7:50 pm. Her boyfriend was expecting her back at her home and became concerned when she didn't return by 8:15 pm.

Patricia King's body was found by a workman, Ernest Ellington, at 7:20 am the following morning in the DVC Vikings football stadium. She was wearing a black blouse and three-quarter length coat and had been strangled with her own gym tights. The newspaper reports stated "A purse (handbag) with her identification was found on the front seat of her car, in a lot adjacent to the stadium. A pair of leather sandals were on the floorboard. Her car keys were found on the Pleasant Hill campus parking lot Friday afternoon". Detective Sergeant Sam Ginsburg said "it was impossible to tell at this time if the girl knew her slayer. There was no reason for her to go into the stadium area coming to or from the parking lot to the class". If the gymnasium is located in the same position today, it is a short 300 feet walk from her class to the parking lot. It was later reported that no identification was found in her purse (handbag), but she was identified by a bus pass found in her clothing. Her wallet was apparently missing according to the newspapers, although Contra Costa sheriffs were in the process of interviewing her friends to discover if Patricia normally left her purse in the car, taking her wallet with her.

Although detectives initially thought she may have been sexually assaulted or raped, the chief medical examiner, Dr. William Bogart, said preliminary tests did not bear this out. Results were inconclusive.

Based on three newspaper statements of "A purse (handbag) with her identification was found on the front seat of her car, in a lot adjacent to the stadium", "The purse was left in her car parked near the body" and "The body was found across the college stadium's sunken football field from the women's gym structure", we can create a map of the likely locations within the Diablo Valley College campus.

The yellow rectangle is the likely location of the parking lot adjacent to the Vikings football stadium, with the gymnasium just 270 feet north of the stadium. Patricia King's body was discovered at 7:20 am on Friday March 6th 1970, but according to the newspaper reports, her keys were not found until Friday afternoon. This would indicate that it took police in excess of four hours to locate her keys, suggesting they were not discovered in close proximity to her vehicle, If they were found in the parking lot, one could therefore conclude they were likely found a distance from her car, on the route she took from the gymnasium towards her vehicle. There are many scenarios, but here are a couple: [1] She was attacked on the journey back to her car, or [2] She fled from her car dropping her keys as she was accosted heading in the opposite direction. The end result being, she was forced into the adjacent football stadium and murdered. Since she was murdered with her own gym tights, does this indicate that the murderer carried no weapon and it wasn't planned in advance, or that she knew her murderer?

The journey time from the gymnasium to the parking lot is 90-120 seconds, so either Patricia King was extremely unlucky to have crossed paths with a merciless killer in this short space of time, somebody followed her out of the gymnasium, or somebody, knowing she usually remained in her gym class for just one hour, lay in wait outside. Few leads transpired.

Patricia King is listed in Graysmith's Yellow Book on page 309 as a possible 12 victim with Leona Roberts as 10 and Cosette Ellison as 11 and Judith Hakari as the next at 13, two days after Patricia King.

I notice you made no connections to Zodiac.

I find that her body being found on the campus of Mount Diablo College being potentially significant as Zodiac would send the Mount Diablo map letter a little over 3 months later on June 26, 1970.

I notice on some of his letters he would write "Speaking" as
Spea king or Speaking with the King part trailing off. Maybe a reference to thoughts about himself.

A serial killer was recently arrested via DNA for the 1973 Murder of a Palo Alto woman. She was killed, strangled with her pantyhose much like Patricia King. Some have jumped to a Zodiac connection.

The bottom line is there were a cluster of unsolved murders in the area of Mount Diablo during 1969 - 1971 period.

I deliberately stayed away from a Zodiac connection Shawn, because I could find nothing tangible to argue, other than location. I think Graysmith named just about every murder back then, with little justification for any. With such slim pickings, I just thought I'd attempt to cover it because you mentioned it. The amount of exposure this crime got, is quite shocking, but I suppose the newspapers have become accustomed to so many murders, they barely make a ripple. A sad indictment of society, and how murder has almost become routine. My coverage will have no effect whatsoever, but I gave it a go. Most people are killed by somebody they know, despite these serial killers roaming around the country, so, on the basis of odds and the fact the perpetrator likely didn't bring a weapon, tends to lead me away from Zodiac, and more towards somebody known to her or known to the college. But in all honesty, with little follow up in the coverage, it's almost an impossibility to forge any meaningful conclusions. The Mount Diablo connection may have held more weight without his mention of buried bombs. If they preserved her gym tights correctly, then DNA could exist, but evidence storage back in those days wasn't geared to idea that DNA or scientific advancements may one day arrive, so I have little hope for a conclusion to this case.

I have just read this article,in the Vallejo Times Herald.

This person,purported to be issuing death threats,is a mental patient,who is clearly known about,and identified by the authorities.

The FBI have said that it is not their jurisdiction,and to refer to the Solano County Sheriff's office.The Solano County Sheriff's office are not available for comment.

Individuals are free to decide that they no longer wish to go to the commemorative event.Mark Hewitt has decided that he will go,regardless of any so called threats.

To perhaps,be the devil's advocate,for a moment.....this story is just not adding up.

If the threats are real,why haven't they arrested this man ?

It seems more likely,that the local community and the local police force,just don't want a coach party turning up,on a solemn anniversary [?].

And,that would be,in itself,an understandable and justifiable reason.

Indeed,it should be seen as a murder,in its own right...then secondly,considered,as a prospective Zodiac victim.

I have admiration,generally,for Robert Graysmith's work and contributions,to the Zodiac case....but,like many that have come after him,''victim count'' wasn't a ''forte'',in merely ''adding up'',apart from ''timeline'' contradictions.

If we employ all of the Zodiac correspondences,both authenticated and unconfirmed,in the lead up to,and including the Belli letter,of December 20th 1969,there are good and realistic grounds,for believing Zodiac's claims,by inference alone,that he was responsible for 8 victims.

But,after the Belli letter,victim count starts to ''untangle'',and it would be foolish to account for Zodiac's victim count,merely on Zodiac's ''say so''.....inferred,or otherwise.

Good point,Shawn to bring up the subject,of Zodiac's apparent habit,of allowing the word ''speaking'',to ''tail down'',at the end of a line of writing.

It does seem that the Zodiac wanted to fit ''This is the Zodiac speaking'',all on to one line....and realised,sometimes,that he was running out of space,on that particular line of writing.

I have some handwriting exemplars,of a suspect who does the very same thing....but,with the word ''necessary''.

A bit worrying [?].But possibly,''not'' that unusual.

On a rewrite of the ''148'',as a total original cipher,constituting a ''second'' ''340'',I have the Zodiac down,with a first line [..17 characters..] solution,as '' THIS IS THE ZODIAC SP''.....which goes on,to ''complete'',as ''THIS IS THE ZODIAC SPEACKING''.

Quite exciting,since the inference is,that initially,the Zodiac is addressing ''SP'' - his ''Secret Pal''.....but then,''doubles up'',on a declaration of ''This is the Zodiac's peace king''.

There will always be more to learn,about this man,who clearly saw ''abstraction'',in observation.

The only question it seems,on ''extent'' is,how much was this down to poor eyesight [?].

Perhaps it would be enlightening to pinpoint all of these various unsolved murders on a map. Furthermore, I wonder how many serial killers do not sexually assault their victims? It seems rather rare. With regards to choking, I was a victim of Peter's. He would put his hands around my neck and choked me. Many many times. Never strongly enough to kill me, obviously. So the energy was there.

The victim mapping,is a good idea,Judith...as with what I have been meaning to do,with the ''confirmed'' and ''unconfirmed'' correspondences,listed,in chronological order....including reported phone calls.

Indeed ,the extent of sexual element,is a contentious issue.It does not appear that the Zodiac raped or sexually molested his victims.

But,it was certainly,or certainly became about ''empowerment''....particularly if one is inclined to favour further victims,after the Belli letter,of Christmas 1969.

''Control'',as you have alluded to Peter's inclinations.

To what extent,was that need to control,sexually motivated [?].And,did that need for empowerment over a victim,become the overriding motive [?].

This,I believe is related to the Belli letter.....that the letter to Belli was,in essence,an admission by the Zodiac that,he had now ''crossed the line'',and was finding that he desired to kill,for its own,perhaps sexual perversion....as opposed to previously killing,to bring attention to his personal gripes.

I have recently been delving more into the lyrics of The Beatles.

John Lennon,by his own admission,was a ''hitter'' of women,and struggled to come to terms with this,in relation to the circumstances of his upbringing.That he was loved by women is unquestionable,but he was forced to make decisions,on his living arrangements,at too young an age.

The following lyrics are from the song,''Getting Better all the time'' :

Through the Zodiac's apparent love of reading,we can,perhaps,start assessing his influences,and understand more about,what ''turned him on''.

Many of his heroes,tended to be,historic figures.

But what of those individuals that were contemporary,to his time.

In studying Zodiac's words and actions,what becomes apparent,I would suggest is,his ''daring''.That he did not hold back,in attempting to shock us,with both ''the pen and the sword''.

And,so it would seem,that he drew his inspiration,from like minded artists.Those that dared to say,what few else would utter,and speak up for liberal values,hard earned,through warfare waged against oppressive regimes.

Sadly,and overlooked by the Zodiac,his ''particular brand'',was underpinned by an overwhelming desire,to inflict terror,therefore largely negating its purpose.

But I do see the living heroes,for his time,as John Lennon,Herb Caen,and Groucho Marx.

Any further suggestions,would be of interest [?].

I am very familiar with the Beatle albums and every word of each song. Having said that, Peter was not into the Beatles. He was not into the Stones or into the Doors even though all of those songs tell the story of him. He was very into his music and very into movies. The Holy Grail of music to Peter was Led Zeppelin.
the murders were not just to get publicity
if you have read my book you would understand the torturous nights at the hands of his parents he Suffered. and the first killing of a couple was absolutely symbolic. my book begins with Christmas time at home with Mom and Dad. He snapped.

Caen spoke from the heart of San Francisco,and,although ''sparingly'',did by inference,express his liberal minded concerns about ''oppressive regimes from within''.Particularly,the infiltration of local police forces,by ''Hoover's men''.This would have included Charles Gains....Toschi's boss.

Excellent additional graphic,Richard,and allows us to focus,and consider.

The Dripping Pen Card,of November 8th 1969,informs us of Zodiac's new cipher,the ''340''.....and claims that 7 victims,is his murder count.

The Belli Letter of December 20th 1969,expresses Zodiac's concern of a ''...nineth and possibly tenth victim.''

So,on the face of it,we might be looking at Leona Roberts or Elaine Davis,as the Zodiac's ''eighth victim'' [?].

And again,on the face of it,we might be looking at Cosette Ellson and Patricia King,as the Zodiac's ''nineth and possibly tenth'' victims.

But,there are certainly grounds for perceiving ''ambiguity'',and even ''contradictions'',in the Belli Letter.

We assume that the Zodiac's ''nineth and possibly tenth victoms'',has put Zodiac,in a quandary as to whether he might be inclined to kill an individual,or a couple.

But then,later in the letter,he appears to be more definite,about ''no nine'' [...number nine..].And this,despite concluding that he might be able to set up his bomb correctly,even though the bomb is currently an inactive proposition,at present.

So,we might conclude that,if Zodiac did get the bomb right....that there would be more victims....and clearly ''more'' than just ''number nine''....or indeed ''nineth or posibly tenth victoms''.

But Zodiac,putting ambiguities aside,is undoubtedly expressing his concerns about ''loosing control''.

On a personal note,I have to lay my cards on the table,and...in view of the Zodiac's possible use of William Grant,as a ''blame'' patsy,being a bit more than just a patsy.....is it conceivable,that the Zodiac is actually earmarking Grant,as his ''Number 9'',in the belief that killing him,might eradicate ''this thing in me'' [?].And further that Zodiac mentions a possible tenth victim,since ''Marian'' might get in the way,of his decision on the ''Nineth'' [?].

Is the Belli letter,''telegraphing'' specific victims ?

Regardless,Zodiac is in some emotional state,and even offers a crumb of comfort that ''..the children are safe..'',and ''...at the moment...''.

But,we should put this in perspective.Likely the work of an irresponsible senior male pupil.

And,the local police should be ''on top of it''.

May I suggest,Richard,that your readers would be in entire agreement,that it is your decision to select topics and aspects of the case,that are entirely relevant to general discussions,at the time.....and act wholly responsible,in dealing with,what is,often,sensitive,material.

It is to your credit that you hold a large readership.Sadly,and because of the nature of the material,this is bound to attract,''idiot'' ideas,from a small minority.

We must rise above this,and press on with exposing as much truth,beyond reasonable doubt,about the case of The Zodiac Killer.

I am all too aware that James Comey and ''The Puppet Master'' met in Washington D.C.,on Friday December 19th 2014.And,any glimmers of optimism in the case,in recent times,emanates from that meeting.

It doesn't,of course,give cast iron guarantees on the successful outcome,of the whole case.

I wouldn't be surprised if we hear of a few similar reports,in the run in,to the 50th anniversary of LHR [?].

Even if we don't hear from LE,there will bound to be some recognition of this milestone,from the newspapers.

Didn't LE ever consider that failure,in this case of the Zodiac Killer,would haunt them,to the end of time [?].I bet they wish that they could hide,this Christmas.

Can we expect the ''unexpected'' [?].

I've told a ''DOJ'' yet again,that history will not wait for them,indefinitely.But,they think that they are ''God'',and answerable to no one.

Let's hope for something soon.

The ''gloves are off'',come the New Year.

And,starting with my outing of an inspector of constabulary,who lied to politicians,in order to ''fix things'' for that same ''DOJ''.

I would have thought that ''DOJ's'' would be bright enough,to understand that,their role in society is,as public servants....in service of the people....and for the people's benefit [?].

But,years of complacency,can have strange effects on certain institutions.Particulary,the ones that deliver failure,as a matter of course .

Interesting points, Rubi. There is a distinct sense of urgency within much of the Z community, with the 50th Anniversary closing in, that the window of opportunity is closing fast...I hope that feeling extends beyond us to at least a few critical members of LE.

Indeed KayElleSF.and I don't make these comments lightly.

What I see,from a combination of what I actually know,and what I have been following is....that there is,to an extent,a naivety that the whole Zodiac case,is about the Bay Area.

Much of any decision making has been taking place,in Washington DC,since although the CA DOJ have had legal guardianship,in the past...it has,in effect,become a ''Federal case''.

I feel a bit sorry for the local police forces,because they are expected to answer questions,and issue statements,related to the case....and yet,they are not being trusted,with the full facts,surrounding any progress in the case.

It's the ''chain of command'',and currently the Bay Area police,though at the heart of where it took place,originally,....are at the bottom of the heap,when it comes to knowledge.

There are some symbols or a drawing next to the opening line of "Get Ready".

One can say they are up, down, left and right arrows. Zodiac used those symbols in his ciphers.

One symbol looks like a partial Halloween symbol as found on the Halloween card envelope. Zodiac signed the Halloween card with only a Z.

If this person was trying to be Zodiac related, he did not go out of his way to be obvious.

Shawn,The person who made the threat for the 50th at LHR, is a guy age 37 who lives in Santa Rosa. He believes his father is Zodiac , anyone who thinks he isn't Zodiac is his enemy. Law enforcement is taking his threat seriously! He has sent me several emails, so most of us know who he is. He is not the person who made the threat at Diablo Valley collage. Fingers crossed that he is arrested by Dec 20th!

Shawn, the mark that looks like symbols to you, could be a bullet hole according to a poster. I think he is correct. He said that is what a bullet hole in metal would look like, I agree. Also the drawing of the gun and the 68 for 1968 I believe has to do with Dec 20th 1968 and the upcoming anniversary. I also mentioned about Patricia King being murdered at that collage. Not knowing that Richard had a thread about her on the same day as the note being found. I am hoping that the cameras were in that area and are being checked for a older man not a student. The writer used the word "imbecile" , that is not a word a young person would use. That was used in my generation. My guess the writer is 75 to 80 yrs old. Perhaps he is working there as a janitor?

Regarding the image at the top of the message, it looks like a broken square.

Slang term used to describe an older slang term of being "square" which was often used to indicate akwardness or someone who is completely odd. If you put the letter "L" and the number "7" close enough together, the two characters create a shape resembling a square.

I completely agree about the use of the word "imbecile". I doubt a young person would even think to use that word - it's just not in their lexicon. I still use it when someone cuts me off in traffic but I'm 53.

The writer's attempt at deception has worked to some degree due to today's tragic school shooting climate, but that word does gives him away.

FWIW, the fact that Zs favorite word "kill" managed to get into a death threat might not be ground shaking, but there it is nonetheless.

I see now,that this isn't the first incident,of this description,to have befallen the Diablo Valley College,his year.

Classes were cancelled,on Thurday March 22nd,after graffiti was discovered,which represented a treat,involving a gun.

In addition,a student attending The History Club,at the college,was reported for making disturbing remarks,including ''Immigrants are rapists'',and ''Jews are evil''.

So,it appears that the local police,haven't exactly been taken by surprise,by this very recent incident.

The Tahoe Card was claimed to be mailed/received? on March 22 1971 per public information even though there is no postmark date.

Another thing, Patricia King was born September 27th, 1949. Exactly 20 years before Lake Berryessa.

I think her dad was involved with Atomic Energy Studies at Berkeley.

Shawn, Thank you for that information. I am wondering what if anything will happen on Dec 20th? On the 12th at the collage, there was a basketball game that afternoon. There had to be more than a normal amount of people there. Families with older people , so he would fit in better perhaps? If he is zodiac, was he there to watch a grandchild play in that game?

I am really focused on this ''148'' actually being Zodiac's second ''340'',at the moment.And it's the first,and only [?],cipher that Zodiac employs numbers [...1,2,3.].

It seems that the possibility of the ''creation'' of ''alpha-numerics'' also....with a ''B'' being represented,by '' 1 3 '',for example.

Also,and coincidentally,Richard has just alluded to the possibility of putting an ''L'' and ''7'' together,to form a ''square''.This,could certainly be relevant,to the ''148''.

It does seem that Zodiac was expressing some subliminal messaging,from the ''cipher text'',as well as the plain text.

Some of those cipher text symbols,are just ''weird'',and not seen them,before.

I think the secret to this is to be like Richard and never get locked in on one suspect. That way you don't get your heart broke when you find out you made the wrong choice. This case is so complicated - you're bound to make a million mistakes along the way. Peace

Richard, The idea that it could be a square is as good as any. Being that he drew a gun, a bullet hole made more sense to me. You mentioned that JPJ also sent you emails. If they are are threats to you, you might want to forward those threats to Sonoma PD or Solano PD who is working on the anniversary threat. Especially if those threats are newer than a couple of yrs ago.

Richard, I am happy to hear that. He picks on those who have suspects that are not his father.
A thought came to my mind a few moments ago about the drawing at the Collage that looks like a square or bullet hole. I thought about where it was drawn and why on the upper left of the note? David Faraday was shot on the left side of his head.

Thank you for this write up. I am only aware of Pat King because my grandmother was good friends with her and always hoped we’d see justice first her. She mentioned that there were murmurings at the time that Pat’s murder was being tied to the Zodiac. I’ve searched high and low for info on her case and this is the most comprehensive so far!
