THE HUNT FOR THE ZODIAC KILLER [EPISODE 5]

12/6/2017

Picture
The final episode of the History Channel docudrama about the Zodiac Killer will air on December 12th 2017. It will probably continue the theme of Lawrence Kane as the potential killer, focusing on the theater district of San Francisco, where Paul Stine was presumed to have picked up his eventual murderer. The murderer of Paul Stine, based on the taxicab meter reading, was believed to have flagged down the taxi in the theater district, near the corner of Mason and Geary Street, an area situated approximately 0.3 miles from the proposed residence of Lawrence Kane at 217 Eddy Street. They will likely state that Donna Lass worked in the Presidio Park at the Letterman General Hospital and lived at 4122 Balboa Street, San Francisco. The Zodiac was last observed entering the park via Julius Khan playground.

A reminder from Harvey Hines 120 page report on Lawrence Kane:
"
Now, according to John Miles, I find that Kane lived at 217 Eddy Street in San Francisco prior to his moving to South Lake Tahoe. In looking at an area map of San Francisco, I found 217 Eddy Street appeared to be only about two to three blocks from where Paul Stine picked up the Zodiac on October 11th 1969. I then called inspector Dave Toschi at the San Francisco Police Department and got more details on the Stine killing. Toschi said they had determined the killer had called for a cab using the public payphone located at Union Square. Toschi said the cab picked the killer up and drove to the corner of Washington and Cherry Streets. At this point the cab driver was shot in the head. The killer was then seen by three witnesses from a residence nearby, wiping down the cab. Apparently wiping away fingerprints. Toschi said he also cut away a portion of Stine's bloodied shirt. After doing this, he calmly walked away in the direction of the Presidio Army Installation.

Two police officers, Don Foukes and Eric Zelms, heard the first radio broadcast and went directly to the area. The first broadcast, however, according to Toschi, erroneously identified the shooter as a black man. As Zelms and Foukes approached, they saw a white male walking toward the Presidio in the direction of Letterman General Hospital. They briefly stopped and asked him if he had seen a man with a gun. He told them he had just seen a man waving a gun and running the other direction. The two officers then hurriedly left in search of the black man.
Now we have the Zodiac running into the Presidio in the direction of Letterman General Hospital. The very place that Donna Lass worked. Also, in looking at the area map, I found that Lass lived six blocks south in the 4000 block of Balboa. That meant the Zodiac Killer started his ride near where Kane lived and ended it several blocks away where Donna Lass lived and worked. During the time she worked in San Francisco she lived at 4122 Balboa Street with a roommate named Carol Emerich. Emerich was also a nurse. According to the employment records, Lass was working a late night shift in October of 1969 when the San Francisco cab driver, Paul Stine, was killed by the Zodiac."

The 340 cipher will remain unsolved, despite claims to the contrary in the preview at the end of episode four. The only interesting feature yet to be resolved, is the DNA testing of Cheri Jo Bates' trousers. Hopefully it will generate a full DNA profile and provide some answers in the Riverside debate once and for all.

Oh for the love of...

First it is solved then it is not. Wish they would make up their minds!

We knew a 5 hour mini-series wouldnt even scratch the surface, tho it does get people thinking Z again. If they do get blood DNA, wud they dig up the dead Ross Sullivan/Lawrence Kane???

The next best thing is a living relative, but it is always difficult to obtain a sample from next of kin, siblings, or relatives. People can understandably get offended if someone claims their dead relative may have been a serial killer! The intention of course is not to accuse anyone but to rule them out, but relatives often do not see it that way. In their mind it may seem totally ridiculous to even entertain the possibility.

The ''Code team'' won't have solved Zodiac's ''340'' cipher, because,to start with, they remain in denial or ignorance,of how Zodiac presented this cipher,in the first place.

Had the ''Code team'' actually bothered to check the solutions to Zodiac's ''408'',by both The Hardens and ''concerned citizen'',they might have had a semblance,of what Zodiac was up to,and trying to achieve,in the ''340''.

In the ''340'',Zodiac put together a perfectly lucid and fluent satirical essay....then took a proverbial sledgehammer, and smashed it in three main places.

The trick being, for the solver,to put ''Humpty Dumpty'' back together again.

Well,Zodiac did warn us that,we would not hear the ''bad news'',for a while, and he was right on that score,48 years later,

But,he did come close in disclosing some of that bad news, when he informed the good people of California, that their State was in trouble, not long after the ''340's'' publication,in a letter from Fairfield.

The ''Code team'' have been so busy, dreaming about the real ''Code team'' that solved the Nazi Enigma Code, that they forgot to grasp, that it requires exceptional ability, and honest hard work,to solve the ''340''.

They are just ''playacting'' a role.

"In the ''340'',Zodiac put together a perfectly lucid and fluent satirical essay....then took a proverbial sledgehammer, and smashed it in three main places."

Possibly, but was he really such an expert? Really he could have done anything to that cipher. Who knows for sure but the Zodiac himself, and he was possibly spectacularly insane at the time.

I think I have an inkling what the Zodiac may have done to his cipher, and if I am right then nobody will ever solve it. The number of permutations to obtain the original script will be infinite.

I think you are along the right lines,Ray.....and say this, genuinely so.

My ''sledgehammer'' reference was,of course,figurative.

What Zodiac actually did was, firstly, write his satirical essay, then precis it to fit a 20x17 grid.

Then he decided on cipher symbols to match, employing a few cheeky polyphonic ones,as he had done,in the ''408''.

Having set out the grid, with both cipher text and plaintext,on a large draught like sheet of paper,he then took out a pair of scissors, and cut out each of the 340 ''double characters'',placing them,as on his original grid,on a dining room,or large table.

He then got to work,on jumbling up sections, according to his desires.

When he was happy with the new order,he then copied down, the new grid display,on the table.

The cipher text part of his new order, then became the ''340 cipher'' that he presented, with his Dripping Card.

So,the primary solution,is a combination of ordered and jumbled passages.

The final solution,is a re-arrangement,by solving anagrams of the jumbled passages....combined with the ordered passages,Zodiac left untouched.

Perhaps ''generously'',he left enough clues in the ordered passages, that solver is able to solve the anagrams....because the whole satirical essay, does flow.

It really matters not a jot to me,if others disbelieve that I have solved the ''340'' cipher.

Within the context,of what is a criminal case,it only matters,at this stage, what the FBI's Cryptanalysis and Racketeering unit think.

And,after four months, they appear unwilling to share their thoughts.

Unsurprisingly,perhaps.

Ray Jenkins

I agree that it is perhaps jumbled in some way.

But I also get the feeling you are perhaps using this "sledgehammer" idea to give some validity to your own jarring and fragmented solution.

Your solution is not the only one that is jarring and fragmented. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of these already in existence, including several of my own. If I sat down and sent a few weeks on it, I could probably come up with many more. The thing is they would all say different things. It was only when got myself educated about the actual chances of being right, that I realized this cipher is an exercise in futility. There is the possibility that it is not a homophonic cipher after all, but another kind of cipher, which may be completely solvable. But even that would be very difficult to prove.

ONLY THE ZODIAC KNOWS WHAT HE DID TO THAT CIPHER. If anyone claims to "know" what the Zodiac had in mind, and can presume to replicate the precise sequence he used to encrypt the message, well that kind of suggests that individual must be the Zodiac himself, because "getting it right" would be like a 1:30 billion chance, regardless of how smart that individual may claim to be or how long he worked on it.

Sadly I think that like so many other contenders to the 340 crown, you seem to understand the immensity of the problem, but you do not believe the same problems apply to your solution. You are right and all others are wasting their time. And so it comes back to one person's subjective determination and interpretation of the reality. Like God, it can neither be proven nor disproven, but at least in this case, due to the real world statistics involved, the chances are far more likely that it is completely and utterly wrong. It takes a certain amount of humility to admit that. Arrogant posturing will just make one look arrogant in the face of the overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Docudramas are too much DRAMA. If anythings been exposed, its Riverside PDs glaring negligence to completely investigate Cheri Jo Bates murder.

And without a body, (bones) Donna Lass' murder wont ever get FBIs full attention either. I read recently that the Jenner murders were solved (after 17 years) Killer confessed to shooting the young couple with his Marlin rifle. DNA wasnt a factor in solving this cold case.

I agree Sully....too much drama....and too much insulting people's intelligence.

One can accept something along the lines of ''The Curse of Oak Island'',because the human factor wasn't so acute,in relation to its history.

But with ''The Hunt for the Zodiac Killer'',we are dealing with an investigation that is still alive, and with so many, still hopeful of an outcome.

The majority of the blame, must come down on the FBI,for the failure of the Zodiac case finding a solution. But the California State D.O.J.,are not blameless of some responsibility, and the Riverside Police could have helped,by being more ''accommodating''.

We just have to hope that the case can be pulled out of the fire.Cases, such as Cheri Jo Bates, may be salvageable,if Zodiac was her perpetrator. But without a body, that of Donna Lass, looks unlikely, unless a confession is forthcoming.

I don't believe that TV programs, such as this current series, help matters in any shape or form.....and probably ''harm'',if anything.

There certainly won't be a second series, without my having written to Mr.Trump, with a ''full bodied'' complaint....whether it makes any difference,or not.

There are too many LE agencies holding back on too much information at present, and actually fail to understand that they are not, ultimately, serving the public's best interests.

Cane's address 217 Eddy st.. Amount to be paid on cab meter $2.17. clue?

Ray Jenkins
12/15/2017 10:38:19 pm

Wow, I am reading all sorts of extravagant claims on this page, which keep me constantly amused. But this one tops them all. It is like "one giant leap for mankind". So Cane worked it out so the cab fare would match his own street address before shooting Stine??? All so perfectly planned, just to provide a "clew". Cane must have been some kind of evil genius mastermind.

That is just so... LOL!

If your comment was intended as light humor then I applaud you.
