THE DECEMBER 20TH 2000 GREETING CARD

5/24/2020

A business reply envelope postmarked Cleveland, OH, March 2nd 1981, bearing the press printed address "The Danbury Mint, Richards Avenue, P.O. Box 5260, Norwalk, Conn", contained the message "Please stop forced bussing or I will kill 3 more black boys in Atlanta in March". Six days later, a letter claiming to be from the Zodiac Killer arrived at the television station WXIA-TV "11 Alive" at 1611 West Peachtree Street, Atlanta, 30308 on March 8th 1981, stating "Hello its me. Haven't you people figured out who is killing these little people yet". I therefore went in search of other communications from these postmark locations that bore any similarity to the Zodiac Killer. The following find is extremely unlikely to have any connection to the Bay Area murderer, but it was a threatening greeting card that carried the same message apparently included with the Zodiac Killer's October 27th 1970 Halloween card, the arrival date carries some significance, the card was postmarked just 22 days before the 2001 Happy New Year "Zodiac" greeting card, which was mailed to the San Francisco Chronicle on January 10th 2001, and it was postmarked from Cleveland, Ohio, just like the March 2nd 1981 letter above.

It was a threatening communication, cut into four pieces and mailed to the Republican Headquarters, 526 Superior Avenue Northeast, Cleveland, Ohio on December 19th 2000 to U.S. Senator George Voinovich, and received on December 20th 2000. Two stickers apparently came with the Zodiac Halloween card in 1970 with the messages "Thinking of you" and "Have a nice day". This greeting card, adorned with an image of flowers, also came with the message "Thinking of you". Three parts of the handwritten threat stated "Hey you stinking white bitch", "We don't want no TV bullshit" and "we will cut off your head and impale it on a spear". The envelope bore a zip code of 44126-1906 and a 33c upside down General Omar N. Bradley stamp.
Picture
In essence, we have a 2000 greeting card bearing the message "Thinking of you", the exact wording previously mailed with the 1970 Halloween card. The 2000 communication bore the postmark Cleveland, Ohio, the same as a potential Zodiac correspondence from 1981. The 2000 greeting card was postmarked 22 days before a suspected Zodiac greeting card on January 10th 2001. The March 2nd 1981, December 19th 2000 and January 10th 2001 communications all carried a racial overtone of "Please stop forced bussing or I will kill 3 more black boys in Atlanta in March", "Hey you stinking white bitch" and "Those bastard Muni Drive (The majority Black and asians) What happened to the White people Drivers we once had".

To find out the reason Senator George Voinovich was targeted, we have to look at his timeline on Wikipedia, where it states "In the Senate, Voinovich opposed lowering tax rates. He frequently joined Democrats on tax issues and in 2000 was the only Republican in Congress to vote against a bill providing for relief from the "marriage penalty". In previous suspected Zodiac communications the author had targeted many notable Democrats, so the fact Senator Voinovich "frequently joined with Democrats on tax issues" is in keeping with a Zodiac Killer of Republican persuasion attacking anybody who opposed his views. However, it must be stressed, that this greeting card was unlikely to have been mailed by the Zodiac Killer despite some of the overlapping features.

This is a nice find , Richard , and at this early stage of examination it is perhaps accepted that proof of a Zodiac link might be difficult...but very persuasive reasons that there may be .

The Danbury Mint link of 1981 , suggests that the Zodiac had visited that address prior , given a perception that the Zodiac took a keen interest in collecting '' miniatures '' , with stamp collecting , model making and even numismatics as possible hobbies , as well as Astronomy and a following of the '' Space Race '' .

I will look at this new find from you , in more detail . It already has seen by me , personally , that in the lead in to 1978 , and a probable re-emergence of the Zodiac , with three letters under the microscope , that the Zodiac was facing a breakdown of some sort , that immediately brings to mind the possibility of marriage separation or divorce ( ? ) .So, the earmarking of a senator who , might have given the Zodiac cause for negative focus , in light of a costly divorce settlement , could be a persuading pointer to Zodiac authenticity .

Sugary coated sarcasm , with '' Thinking of you '' ( ? ) .

A divorce settlement , and the breakdown of a marriage , then viewed as business arrangement to be fixed , is quite likely to bring out the worst in someone who , is likely to blame anyone else , but themselves .

YES nice find , Richard

A possible connections to the Diggers. The underground racists could be linked in someway.

But WXIA-TV Atlanta is a Hearst-Argyle Television station. They could just unevenly report crime to stoke the flames of hate. And Larry Kane was a collector. Would he have been a hit-man he may have chosen the name Kane as a subliminal thing - thinking of his employer and the movie Citizen Kane.

Thursday December 21st 2000 .

Three days following the death of Randolph Apperson Hearst .

Eleven days following the death of Paul Avery .

If the Zodiac , and based on the authenticity of the 2001 New Years Card , three weeks to come...then an up-beat and confident Zodiac , albeit with sarcasm and wit sharpened .

The worst of that unhappiness '' glitch '' ( circa 1978 - 1982 ? ) , well behind him , but like an old elephant , he never forgot , nor forgave .

Yes December 2000 is the key

And , if the postmark is December 19th , then the day after R.A.Hearst's death.

Nice spot on Hearst financed TV station , BB .

The front of the card : '' Thinking of you ! ''

Perfect selection for the Zodiac ( ? ) .

And , a bankers bet , that he would have added that exclamation mark , himself , if wasn't already there .

Or - did he add the exclamation mark ?

If the card's source can be traced , then we might be able to find out . For , how many would think to add an exclamation mark , in downgrading the intent of a perfectly innocent original message conveyed by the card's selection ( ? ) .

The Zodiac for one , anyway .

Richard

I thought of Avery when I found it, but sadly no mention or reference in any way to Avery. Of course, you wouldn't expect one if it wasn't Zodiac. But these recent communications we've discussed seem to be either west or east America, with very little in between. I wish I could have had access to the handwriting on this 2000 card, so as to compare it to 22 days later. A mixture of upper and lower case writing could have sealed the deal.

A female staffer of Voinovich at the Federal Building in Cleveland, Ohio received a phone call in 2003, with the anonymous caller stating "He (Voinovich) is in trouble: I'll beat him one-half to death".

An interesting time , BB .
George Bush had had to fight Gore , with threats of law courts , over the close run race for Presidency ( Trouble over spoiled votes in Florida ? ) .So , a relief for Republicans , after 8 years of Bill Clinton ( ? ) .

This card's author seeing Voinovich as a '' turncoat '' ( ? ) .

BB
5/24/2020 04:35:12 pm

Dick Cheney has ran things since 1969
He controlled Ford, Reagan, Bush Sr. and Jr. and blocked everything Democrats Carter, Clinton, and Obama tried to do. He was given a large fellowship in 1968 and moved to DC where he got his hands on the wheels of power and never let go. I wonder if any one will ever wield that kind of power again?

George Voinovich was Mayor of Cleveland 1980 - 1989
George Voinovich was Governor of Ohio 1991 - 1998
George Voinovich was Republican Senator for Ohio 1999 - 2011

George Voinovich replaced Democrat Senator John Glenn

John Glenn was Democrat Senator for Ohio 1974 - 1999

John Glenn was a famous space pioneer , having been the first American Astronaut to orbit the Earth ( 1962 ) , and made a final flight in space , in 1998 .

Both John Glenn and George Voinovich died in 2016 .

John Glenn's wife , Annie , died five days ago , aged 100 .

Rubislaw 32 link
5/24/2020 12:40:10 pm

Yes , Richard , it does seem as the author of this card was a Republican supporter who , saw George Voinovich as too often a '' turncoat '' .

It is possible that Voinovich knew that he had taken his Senator's position , from a national hero , John Glenn , who had been a Democrat , so had to steer a '' middle of the road '' course , to appease his electorate ( ? ) .

But , clearly the card's author was not happy with Voinovich .

Rubislaw 32 link
5/24/2020 01:49:03 pm

Here's the thing , albeit the straight-laced side of a middle-class '' Zodiac '' being a Republican supporter , in general :

If the Zodiac was a keen '' Space Race '' follower , and professed patriot , in real life , he's going to think that John Glenn is '' the bee's knees '' , and will know about the guy ( Voinovich ) who filled Glenn's boots , in political office .

Then , that guy ( Voinovich ) votes as a ''turncoat '' on an issue that is close to the Zodiac's sensitivities .

And , if one added that the Zodiac was born and brought up , in Houston , Texas - the very epicentre of the '' Space Race '' , then that annoyance is likely to be multiplied ( ? ) .

'' Just saying ''.

Richard
5/24/2020 02:48:53 pm

Certainly possible he could have spent his formative years in Texas, or even the New York region Rubislaw. But certainly GOP leaning if we believe some of his suspected previous letters.

Having graphically processed the card , Richard , do you have any insight or opinion about the exclamation mark ?

I had a look at '' Thinking of you '' cards , which are obviously quite popular , in that they can cover birthdays , mothering Sundays , '' get well soon '' etc. eventualities also .

But , not seen one with an exclamation mark , before . More a quiet sentiment , than a '' wake up '' call ( ? ) .

Richard
5/24/2020 04:03:24 pm

Exclamation marks were originally called the "note of admiration." They are still, to this day, used to express excitement. They are also used to express surprise, astonishment, or any other such strong emotion. Any exclamatory sentence can be properly followed by an exclamation mark, to add additional emphasis.

The additional emphasis in this respect being "Thinking of you" in a malicious way. But I doubt the card was chosen because of the exclamation mark, with the message primarily the overriding factor. In other words, had the card in the shop had the same message without the exclamation mark, he'd have still bought it.

Rubislaw 32 link
5/24/2020 04:17:40 pm

Thanks Richard . I suspect that the card's author has added the exclamation mark , since the bouquet of flowers presented are '' staid '' in nature , and almost more in keeping with '' In deepest sympathy ''.

It seems to me that the author could have selected a more '' up-beat '' looking card , but deliberately selected a staid one , so that he could then deliberately jazz up the sarcasm , in an open manner .

In addition that the whole '' tone '' desired by the author / sender would not become apparent , until the four cut pieces , were put back together again .

Not so dissimilar , perhaps with the case of Paul Stine's shirt swatches....even though the criminologists had to wait a bit longer , for Stine's shirt to be '' one '' once again .

I’ve always got Republican-leaning vibes from Zodiac’s mailings as well. It’s part of the reason why I don’t believe Gareth Penn (a staunch liberal) could be the Zodiac. While I don’t buy into all the left vs right identity politics myself, from reading the zodiac’s mailings I just cannot imagine him being someone sitting in front of Twitter pontificating about BLack lives Matter and Trump’s policies on renewable energy sources. Unless you believe he just faked all his letters, the personality and character type it conveys doesn’t fit nicely in my opinion. I think if Zodiac was alive today he’d be a cantankerous curmudgeon a bit repulsed and bitter by the condition of modern culture and I believe we’d have received something in terms of mailings over more recent years to that end.

"I think if Zodiac was alive today he’d be a cantankerous curmudgeon a bit repulsed and bitter by the condition of modern culture" Well, that would make at least two of us ;)

I catch your drift , 35sweetgoodbyes , though each generation should be given the opportunity to make their mark .

Bar the odd exception , I find myself wondering : '' What happened ? Did they run out of good songs ? ''

I remember my father explaining to me about what John Glenn was doing - flying around the world in an aeroplane without wings ( ? ) . Well , this was something I had to find out more about .

( The Zodiac is still '' alive and well '' , apart from the heart pills .)

5/25/2020 04:17:35 pm

Excellent take, Rubislaw! I sure hope the "old coot" is still alive so he can experience his take down ala GSK. Thanks to the pharmaceutical industry (Chinese and otherwise) buying us a few decades, we may get a look at him after all.

One way he may be caught is through non-canonical crimes such as the "Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Murders". I still think there's a chance he may be the person to have tortured and killed those young women - a necklace with a cross found at the scene, victim hog-tied with clothes line, the markings on the barrel etc - I just cant rule him out.

Maybe if they ever catch the perp responsible for those heinous crimes, we might have our man.

Rubislaw 32 link
5/24/2020 05:15:26 pm

I certainly go with what I perceive as your gist , Ansar .

I think that there was a part of the Zodiac that desired to be '' cool and hip '' as with what became fashionable , as part of the times for men of his age .

But , he couldn't really let go of what his upbringing had taught him , and knew deep down that many of these hipsters , beatniks and hippies , were actually wasting an investment in a secure future for themselves .

Any show of political leanings was really designed to disrupt , embarrass , offend and provoke the authorities .

I think that there could be an argument in favour of this card being the Zodiac , as an abstracted form of representation , on how he went about his use of Paul Stine's shirt swatches . Although and ''obvious '' puzzle - one that the authorities would be waiting on , to complete . In effect , giving the Zodiac a little more mileage on his attention seeking antics .

An alternative , could be that the Zodiac was aware that the ticker-tape parade conferred on John Glenn , by President Kennedy , saw a revival of that very phenomenon and , some other astronauts received the same , mostly as a public relations exercise to create a good-feel factor , to mask the enormous costs of funding for the Space Race , which the tax-payer was actually financing .

So , the card being cut into four pieces may have been meant as an extra dig at Voinovich , inferring that his worth to the public , was nothing , in comparison to John Glenn , Voinovich's predecessor .

Stanley Dean Baker not Steven Baker

He may have ties to the 4Pi cultleader "The Grand Chingon"

Who was that? Sounds like Yellow Press. "Baker confessed to the murder of Robert Salem, despite no evidence linking him to the crime, and he was never charged by police. http://murderpedia.org/male.B/b/baker-stanley-dean.htm."

https://www.zodiacciphers.com/zodiac-news/the-robert-salem-murder

This could be further proof of Hearst setting up the Zodiac narrative.

As the usual suspects came together to do the hoax but were too obvious.
Tagging it with the Zodiac label was discarded for copycat. The Hearst run
press labeled Stanley a Hippie. But he was nothing but violent and chaotic.
Which is true? What we are told by Hearst paid writers.
Or, what we can see for ourselves?
Guilt by association. This is proof of the narrative was being manipulated.

Once again the comments have nothing to fo with the Zodiac case, but it does reveal the vivid imagination of some of the regular posters on this site.

BB
5/26/2020 11:51:46 am

Tom
The Zodiac is starting to fall in-line with the profile of being a small underground group of 4 to 12 men.
Not a Horan thrill-kill cult but in reality a group of cops and reporters hired to create a boogieman.
Perhaps Hearst had a little hoax going-on to create a comic book character that he could say wrote letters to him the editor of The Examiner and his pal the editor of The Chronicle - Avery. Not just to interject his politics into the San Francisco scene but to sell papers.
This is an abuse of our first amendment rights of freedom of the press. It is a very unpatriotic deed. Thousands of our fellow country men have died to give us this first amendment right. Hearst abused the Constitution. To go down that repressive path is a vile thing. Do you agree? As for Baker he was never even charged with the murder of Robert Salem. That is because he did not do it. Who did? Perhaps
One of the hoaxers went too far and started actually killing people. Or maybe there were copy cats inspired by all the news hype. This too would make Hearst's hoaxers criminals. Freedom of speech becomes illegal when that group you are influencing becomes violent because of that speech.

BB
5/26/2020 02:48:02 pm

The term stochastic terrorism describes the thing that these media moguls do to provoke unstable men to violence. Stoking the flames of hate. Like through the use of racist hate speech. Bigots are a dime a dozen. Understanding comes through years of education.

Kennedy assassinations were going on at this same time. The ad that Harold and Lamar Hunt put in the Dallas Morning News of a wanted poster of the President was so provocative that some men may have acted out of hate from that rush of rage their message instilled.

Rational people can control themselves. But we are not talk about normal folks. The individual that acts out of rage is already unhinged. Perhaps like a Zodiac Copy Cat. Titillated by the ideas soaked up while obsessing over these detective magazines. The impressionable mind can be drawn into a line of thinking that it otherwise would not. This rush to judgement is the case in point.

Two things that pop out at me on this "Thinking of you" card;

1) bottom right of card looks like an image of a dog, like a german shepard with pointy ears

2) bottom, middle section, in the 2 white circle spaces...there seems to be 2 characters, like notes or gaelic letters, or chinese letters?

Can we get a closer look at these sections?
