THE "BLEEDING KNIFE OF ZODIAC"

7/4/2019

I thought I would take another look at the December 16th 1969 Fairfield letter in which Zodiac stated "I will kill more people than you cops can count so look for more blood". The Zodiac Killer accompanied his lined letter with the large drawing of a knife entitled "The Bleeding Knife of Zodiac". I had always believed this to be a crude reference to the brutal stabbing of Cecelia Shepard and Bryan Hartnell on September 27th 1969, however, the answer may lie elsewhere - to be found in the November 12th 1969 edition of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Picture
In an article with the header "I've Killed Seven, The Zodiac Claims" by Paul Avery, the article begins with "San Jose Girls May Be Victims" and continues "Beyond leaving several cryptic clues indicating that the newly revealed killings occurred last August, possibly in San Jose, Zodiac's latest correspondence - a long rambling letter and a contemporary greeting card - revealed nothing as to who the two victims were".

Law enforcement and the newspapers had long posed the question as to whether Zodiac had any involvement in the brutal stabbing murders of the two young San Jose girls. The two teenagers, Debra Gaye Furlong (14) and Kathy Ann Snoozy (15), had been savagely attacked with a short-bladed knife on August 3rd 1969. Therefore, it didn't come as much of a surprise when the Zodiac Killer bolstered his victim total to seven murders on November 8th 1969, when he mailed the 'Dripping Pen Card' to the San Francisco Chronicle. After the attack on Cecelia Shepard and Bryan Hartnell at Lake Berryessa, followed by the message on the car door, a depiction of a fountain pen dripping with blood probably seemed like an apt choice by the Zodiac Killer.

I couldn't help noticing the similarities between the Dripping Pen and Dripping Knife of Zodiac, particularly because of the seven blood drops falling from the knife correlating with his "I've Killed Seven" claims in the greeting card and the addition of "Aug" in his chronological victim count. We know he was responsible for five murders, that of David Faraday, Betty Lou Jensen, Darlene Ferrin, Cecelia Shepard and Paul Stine - but had now tagged victims six and seven onto his running total. These two extra victims were Debra Furlong and Kathy Snoozy.

Five weeks later, on December 16th 1969, he effectively rejoiced in these murders by mailing the "The Bleeding Knife of Zodiac" correspondence, which depicted seven drops of blood falling from a knife - one for each victim - and fashioned like his Dripping Pen card. The Zodiac Killer, inspired by the Deborah Furlong and Kathy Snoozy murders on August 3rd 1969 and its coverage on the front page of the Chronicle three days later, launched his callous knife attack at Lake Berryessa seven weeks later, resulting in the premature death of Cecelia Shepard. The Zodiac Killer was hoping the attack on the shores of Lake Berryessa would augment the belief of law enforcement to his involvement in the San Jose murders. This is why he wrote August on the Dripping Pen card, bumped his total up to seven and then boldly exhibited the "The Bleeding Knife of Zodiac" on December 16th 1969 with seven drops of blood.

PictureDecember 16th 1969
Four days later, on December 20th 1969, the Zodiac Killer mailed the Melvin Belli letter containing a piece of Paul Stine's blood-soaked shirt, confirming its authenticity. Ironical then, that the Zodiac Killer wrote "look for more blood" in his previous correspondence. The Melvin Belli letter attempted to depict a killer who was losing control and searching for a ninth and tenth victim. Bearing in mind the two brutal attacks perpetrated with a knife, was the Melvin Belli letter attempting to paint a picture of a bloodthirsty maniac, looking for two more victims picnicking alongside a scenic backdrop?

The drawing of a 'bleeding knife' not a direct reference to the "by knife" phrase written on the car door of Bryan Hartnell at Lake Berryessa, but more of a triumphant claim of his involvement in two brutal knife attacks in the Bay Area. It would take nearly two years to conclusively expose this deception, coming with the arrest of Karl Francis Werner in late April of 1971. Regardless, the Zodiac Killer wasn't finished yet.

The Napa payphone shown as the one Zodiac phoned from on websites and forums, as shown in a new forum thread on Zodiac Killer forum, has a receiver dangling and fingerprint dusting powder on the phone. The only problem with this payphone is it has Yountville, Napa on it. But the payphone call was made from 1231 Main Street, which isn't in Yountville. Yountville is an 8 mile journey north. Also, the depiction of the payphone shows a dangling phone, whereas the police report on page 15 states "Reporting officer then approached the phone booth and noted the receiver of the phone was off the hook, and LAYING ON THE SHELF with the mouth piece directly under the phone unit, the ear piece protruding to the south and the openings on the receiver facing the east wall of the booth - the folding door being the south enclosure of the booth.

The fact the earpiece was protruding south, with the openings on the receiver east, clearly shows it was laying on the shelf. A dangling earpiece does not correlate with this description. Therefore, the picture of a payphone in Yountville, 8 miles from 1231 Main Street (which isn't in Yountville) with a dangling phone not correlating with the description given in the police report, cannot be the payphone Zodiac called from.

Buyerninety (on the forum) may have explained the Yountville attribution as "the wording seen above the telephone unit in the picture is difficult to make out, but I think what it says is something like; TO CALL (MORE? / OTHER?) (NUMBERS? / PAYPHONES?) IN YOUNTVILLE, NAPA ST., HELENA. That is a good explanation of why Yountville is on a Main Street payphone. This leaves the question - where is the photograph before the phone was moved? Why wouldn't you replace the phone to its original position before taking a photograph? If several photographs were taken, why is this photograph used as opposed to the one showing the correct position? I would find it hard to believe they dusted and manhandled the phone before securing an original photograph of the payphone.

Look Richard, if you had just read a little further in the police report you would have found it. Sorry Richard. That's OK. The police report stated "This scene was photographed to show the receiver's position and the phone number 255-9673. The phone booth was then processed for latent fingerprints. Thanks Richard. That's OK, just pay attention next time. I will.

So where is the original photograph of the phone position and why is the dangling phone always shown? I don't know, but I'll look into it. You do that, it must be out there somewhere.

You don't need me,as a convert on this subject, focusing on decisions made,by the Zodiac, between August and through to Christmas,1969,Richard.....because I am already there, and believing.

Just wanted to emphasise that I believe that this ''change of tact'',introducing a proverbial and literal ''knife'',into the ''fear of Zodiac''....came about because of Zodiac's gun arsenal, had been reduced to ''one remaining'',following LHR and BRS attacks, where his intention was,to always dispose of each firearm, once used.

After BRS,Zodiac,I believe, was looking at future strategy, with regard to terror.....and came to the conclusion that,if he could succeed with a knife attack, without needing to use his one remaining gun....then a ''project'',such as the execution of a city taxi driver, was a further ''viable proposition''

And so,his ''Gun'',''Gun'',''Knife'',''Gun'' sequence of attacks, transpired, with largely succesful results.

The point of uncertainty, for me,remains as to what extent, the knife attacks on Snoozy and Furlong, also influenced his decision making, with regard to ''Berryessa'' [knife, with gun threat],and then ''Presidio'' [gun].

After ''Presidio'',it was all three guns used up....and that ''state of affairs'',I believe, contributed to ''depression'',in the run in,to Christmas 1969.

The Zodiac had now successfully established, his particular brand of fear....but,without a gun left, the reality of his ''figurative immasculation'',was starting to kick in.

Richard

It makes me consider the order he used his weapons with respect to the Halloween card - running clockwise: by gun, by rope, by knife and by fire (Johns car burning). This order reflects perfectly the order in which these weapons of murder appeared for the first time, whether or not he was responsible for the Modesto abduction or not. But this begs the question, did he discover the Tim Holt comic book earlier than surmised and created a 'shopping list' of crimes, or were his crimes a case of circumstance with weapon availability or reactionary to his lack of front page newspaper coverage. The only reason I highlight San Jose rather than the Manson murders as inspiration, is the later 1971 correspondence continuing the theme. The argument could be made that Zodiac was simply a versatile killer, switching weapons, dressing up and attacking a cab driver in the heart of the big city. He thought by varying his style and making the attacks more daring, he would engender more publicity, which is basically what he was after from the beginning. The murders simply the avenue required to get the attention of law enforcement and the newspapers - then he could ride the wave, so to speak.

Richard

Also, if the Zodiac Killer did trail the three Pacific Union College girls to Berryessa, then these were his primary target. Only circumstances altered the path of events that day, resulting in the attack on Shepard and Hartnell. It depends on whether you believe Zodiac was the person 0.8 miles north of the eventual crime.

....just further,to this, and admitedly applying some ''amateur hour'' psychology...I believe that the ''San Jose'' cryptogram, was the last of the Zodiac's genuine ''boastfulness'',with regard to being a ''knifeman''....with its links to his decision to take responsibility,by inference, for the Snoozy and Furlong murders.

Into December 1969,we see the emergence of the ''pairs'' of,both,Fairfield letters and ''Day-by-Day'' forecasts.Effectively, the run in,to a ''Melvin Belli'' conclusion, where the Zodiac is now,in psychological ''pieces''.

The Fairfield letters, culminating in ''The Bleeding Knife''...were just for show, that the Zodiac was as cocky,as ever. But,really,he was just covering up for the reality of uncertainty where his career,as an urban terrorist, was heading.

''Happiness is a warm gun''....and Zodiac had none left.

The ''Day-by-Day'' forecasts were the ''wistful'',''self-calming'' correspondences....a little reflectful,of how the Zodiac had come ''to this point''.

These ''cut 'n paste'' 's ,I intend to research more,if possible.Personally,I believe that, the Zodiac had started his Bay Area madness, with Memphis, his ''primary'' home....which had the moved to ''Greater L.A.'',between Blue Spring Rocks and ''Berryessa'',in the summer of 1969.

And,that the employment of commercial arliners,for a ''commute'' of a sort,is born out,in those ''Day-by-Day'' forecasts.Even though,by the time of those forecast correspondences...Greater L.A. had become,the Zodiac's ''new'' primary home,and was ''now'',exclusively using motorcars,for self-transportation.

But,returning to ''The Bleeding Knife''...it was all for show....and picked up,again,on his disgraceful behaviour,at Lake Berryessa.

But,one could argue,when did the Zodiac,actually behave well ?

Richard

We may disagree to the extent of the San Jose inference, as you allude a ceasing on November 21st 1969 of Zodiac's genuine boastfulness. I know I have probably gone on a bit, but I have a genuine belief that the Pines card, Monticello card, 148 cipher and probably the DMV letter as testimony to his obsession with the San Jose murders, with all these communications heavily interlinked. I do, however, understand that not everybody shares my beliefs. It would be arrogant of me to close the book entirely, as this case is constantly evolving.

Rubislaw 32 link
7/5/2019 01:47:16 am

Yes...I think it's always worth going over, time and again,Richard...and,a ''crux'' of a sort is,at what point did the Zodiac ''figuratively contract'' himself,by inference,as responsible for the knife attacks,on Snoozy and Furlong [?].

At that point, that the Zodiac ''did'' contract himself,we must assume that he had yet to actually use a knife on anyone....but knew that he would have to,in the ''near'' future,in order to convince the authorities that he really was ''also''.a knifeman.

But,some of that ''self-deliberation'' may have been out of necessity,in realizing that,if he felt it too risky to buy further firearms...then a ''knife'' was going to have an integral part,of his overall strategy.

Richard

When we look at the July 31st letters, three times he reinforced the front page message, following this up by his further dismay of the lack of coverage on August 4th. The Dripping Pen card stated "Could you print this new cipher in your frunt page? I get aufully lonely when I am ignored, so lonely I could do my Thing." His July 26th 1970 'Little List' letter wasn't even published for over 2 months and he wrote on March 13th 1971 "the reason I'm writing to the Times is this, They don't bury me on the back pages like some of the others".. His obsession with front page coverage and disillusionment at not receiving it was a primary driver. The question that has to be asked is, did this drive him to his change of tactics on September 27th 1969 and his "apparent" focus on the knife attacks in San Jose and Saratoga in 1971, or was this switch simply self-governed. In other words, he had decided upon it without any outside influence. To me, it seemed like the newspapers shaped the Zodiac, just as much as he shaped their coverage. The 1971 letters appeared like the last hurrah of a Zodiac who realized murder was not for him anymore, if it ever really was. Moreover, he always felt compelled to murder, because he needed to to get the coverage. Had this guy been an actor or celebrity, I doubt he would ever have embarked upon his Zodiac crimes. The attention was his sole driver. When the letters and cards in 1971 were no longer backed up with murder, and law enforcement knew he was piggybacking off others crimes, the Zodiac inevitably fizzled out. His race was run. Whether or not he threw in the odd token letter subsequent to 1971 is open to conjecture. But that is another story.

I'm ''all in'' on the ''purpose'' of,at least, the Monticello card and Z148,Richard,as you have alluded to.

In fact,I still believe that Z148 offers a bit more, since, like Z263,it is few characters ''shy'' of completing a ''squared up'' original grid system...and like Z263,a presumed Zodiac, actually offered a further cryptic riddle, for which a solution was to be found.

Ok...I probably don't have many supporters,on that proposition...but I have accused Dan Olsen,himself...and a ''DOJ'' of witholding evidence that,the 1988 New Canaan Letters,started ''Dear George'',as in,Joan Webster's father.

A point to be made, perhaps is,that at times that the Zodiac had ''been away'' from the ''terrorism game'',and for long periods...he would start off,''just'' sticking to a conveyance of his ''greatest hits''.

And,in some ways, this is what ''The Bleeding Knife'' was ''mostly'' about.....as in,''Now you know I did Lake Berryessa - so don't ever doubt me,as a knifeman.''.

Just wanted to ''park'' the thought of the potential ''massiveness'' of ''August 10th 1969'',for the Zodiac, with your site,Richard.

i] Having got wind of a couple, solving his 408 cipher, the day before, the full reality of an unsatisfactory ''solve'',was splashed across the SF Chronicle. His first reaction ''may'' have been,to hoax a call to the VPD,with a ''Robert E EEE'' solve,of the final few characters. His ''second'',possibly to send a letter to John Lynch [VPD],with a ''full'' solution.

ii] News was filtering through, over celebrity mass murders,in LA....bound to keep him,off front page news....with the euphoria of the first moon landing, only just beginning to fade.

i] He only had one gun left, and thoughts of the ''local'' frenzied murders of teenagers,Snoozy and Furlong, one week prior...were beginning to enter his head,as something for which he might lay claim....thereby offering the public,a greater range of his skills,as a ''butcher'',also.

iv] A summer vacation was looming, but had to stay focused on a ''convenience'' move,of primary home,to Greater L.A.

If the Zodiac was to continue, this terror game, which he had,in part, only just begun.....then he would have much to consider.....and,re-starting,from a point of ''knowing'' humiliation,at the hands of a couple of schoolteachers.

It seems that,out of this adversity,Lake Berryessa,Presidio Heights,and the ''340'' cipher,was born....and a ''revitalised'' Zodiac Killer,began to make his mark,again.

...sorry,just looking for it again, and found.

This is where we found that, redactions in the police report, initially, were later made ''transparent''....and surmised that Robert H.Coon,of 345 Hyde Street,SF.....had given his permission.

This report may well represent, one of the Zodiac's ''sneakiest'' tricks,of all [?]....and I propose, with some confidence that,''345 Hyde Street'' will be found to have appeared,in second place,on Paul Stine's journey ''trip sheet'',on the evening of his execution.

Report,made out by George Bawart,of Vallejo P.D.

8-10-69 1:40 PM Call received from a Robert H.Coon 345 Hyde St. San Francisco who stated he decoded the remaining portion of the cipher as follows : THE TIP I'M ROBERT E EEEE. Coon feels that the four E's may stand for a name such as FORESE or FOURIES. [Bawart]

This 1:40 PM call, was officially the first fielded call,in the wake of the SF Chronicle's publication of the 408 cipher,as decoded by the Hardens....with the Vallejo PD awaiting calls, that August 10th day.

Richard

Cheers Rubislaw. The close proximity of 345 Hyde to Geary and the phone call to the Concerned Citizen card certainly worthy of consideration. There is something else in the BRS report that may well be worth reviewing in a small article. With so little to go on, every scrap is worth a second look.

Just on a more speculative note, but probably worth a mention :

When Radio social commentater,Mae Brussel, secured an interview with Dave Toschi, circa 1978,Toschi referred to a ''Robert'',for whom Toschi ''felt sorry for''.

This was in relation to suspects interviewed,in the wake of the Paul Stine murder.Toschi was later,to retract any comments that he had made,in this interview [....on official subsequent ''advice'' [?]....].

So,there was a certain amount of speculation,in the press,to whom Toschi had been referring to.

Two Roberts seem to come from ''somewhere''.

i] Robert Linkletter, son of Hollywood entertainer,Art Linkletter, who had been a suspect in the Dr.Ohta family murders, and Tate murders.

ii] Robert Hunter, the musician, who resided,in the vicinity of Stines murder.

Perhaps Robert H.Coon fits the bill, better [?]....given that he was an innocent,as hoaxed on August 10th 1969,with the Robert E EEEE call.

Perhaps I would not have been attracted to this, without certain knowledge, regarding a suspect.....but,unfortunately,I cannot divulge.

[.....sorry....].

But,I do now see, that some who attempt a solve of the 1990 Celebrity Cypher, presume that the first line, reads ''Robert'',albeit only five characters available....though,possibly a sixth character,to be found,on the second line [?].

Rubislaw 32 link
7/5/2019 02:21:51 pm

Not my intention,to ''lay it on thick'',since others will always make their minds up,on anything speculative,but....

Robert H.Coon was a well known mystic guru, and writer who,at the time, was advocating that, the signs of the zodiac held equvalence to the twelve days of Christmas.

So,it is unlikely that,the telephone hoaxer,on August 10th 1969,merely ''pulled'' Coon,out of a directory,at random and....

May have attended one of Coon's mystic lectures.

Darlene Ferrin drove a 1963 brown Corvair and Michael Mageau described the assailant's vehicle as similar style, possibly lighter in colour. I would have thought by 7/6/69 police may have been looking for such a vehicle in the surrounding area to the payphone. Interesting that on page 42 of the police report which I have redacted that at 12:55 pm an anonymous letter was received at Vallejo PD stating "Badly rusted beat up Corvair getting a bright green paint job at 909 Georgia. Owner about 25, 5'9", over 200 lbs, brownish thinning hair, sloppy fat, strange acting. Lives with parents. Calif BTU 179". Michael Mageau estimated 26-30, he was a heavyset man standing at about 5'8'' tall, beefy build, but not blubbery fat, possibly 195-200 pounds, short curly hair, light brown almost blond. The report continued 1:03 pm "With Sgt Kramer observed this car at the corner of Georgia and Monterey Streets BTU 179. Car has maroon (brownish red) top, light green hood and dark green panels. Car is 1963 Corvair 2-door. Checked the registration of the car and it reflects that Patrick, 909 Georgia Street. Went to that address and contacted Patrick Dennis, WMA, 23 years, dob 3-19-46. Is employed as a stevedore at Port Chicago.

Patrick states that on 7-4-69 he went to the fireworks display at the waterfront and from there he went home. States that he parked his car in front of the house at 11:30 pm and did not leave after that time. Patrick's mother Delores (Copeland) was present and verified Patrick's statement. Patrick doesn't own a gun and he did not know Darlene Ferrin. Patrick states that the car can be started without a key but he is sure no one else used the car as it was in the same place in the morning as it was the night before. This car apparently has a bad oil leak as the street in front of the house showed oil on the pavement as though the car was leaking oil.

909 Georgia Street is 5/8 mile from the payphone. Interesting story.

Since I am one who (very much) thinks the "Bleeding Knife of Zodiac" is a fake...here is my 2 cents...

This just proves the Zodiac we KNOW to be Zodiac claimed crimes he didn't commit. Some more bold than others, but he did it. He wanted people to think he was responsible for the Snoozy/Furlong murders by claiming "Aug", but of course he kept that off "his" most creepy, personal vicious attack (LB).

IMO, Zodiac was a game player--and there was another out there who liked his style, who admired him, and got off copying him.

Someone sent that letter after that card was published. "The Bleeding Knife of Zodiac"....think about it...Zodiac never referenced himself that way--in the third person. It's just off! I do think it's the same author of other communiques--I'll leave it at that. ;)
