THE BIRTH OF THE ZEPHYR COVE CIPHERS

Lawrence Kane is one of several high profile suspects linked to the atrocities that befell the Northern regions of California during the late 1960s, a period that saw a new breed of serial killer emerge from the shadows. Alex Lewis, an avid Zodiac enthusiast, also known by his pseudonym Welsh Chappie, is of the conviction that Larry Kane is the man most likely behind the mask of evil, due to several observations relating to Larry Kane's timeline during the Zodiac murders. Alex has compiled an extensive range of information on his website pertaining to this subject, and pretty much covers all you need to know about Larry Kane. http://welshchappie.wordpress.com. He has also formulated an interesting theory that links the solved 408 Cipher, the My Name is...Cipher, Larry Kane's year of birth and his residency in Round Hill Village, Zephyr Cove, South Lake Tahoe.
The following post is entirely the work of Alex Lewis, submitted to me, outlining the details of his connection between the aforementioned Zodiac letters.

Alex Lewis:
Firstly I would like to start by stating that the following is just my opinion, but it is an opinion I hold based on facts and information as it stands. I believe that combining these two captioned communications sent by Zodiac allows us to identify Zodiac's name, house number and year he was born.

So, what is it about the 408 and My Name Is communication that make them relevant in conjunction with each other? Well, firstly, both the 408 and the My Name Is communication seem to want to make the number 24 relevant. In the 408 cipher, there were three sections split into groups of three that were sent to three different Bay Area newspapers.

Each of the three parts had eight lines of encrypted cipher. This was no random number of lines per section of cipher. Three lines of eight total twenty-four lines in total for the entire message (3 x 8 = 24). Then, in Zodiac's My Name Is line of cipher, he once again seems to want to point to three eights, or twenty-four, being relevant because this time he leaves no room for it to be overlooked by placing three circles within the line of cipher, each of which contain the number eight.

So, it seems our faceless friend wants us to know that the number 24 is relevant. 1924 is his year of birth. So, considering the three sets of eight lines are not random but point to 24, what about the overall number of symbols contained in the cipher? Each line contains 17 symbols, and there are, as we know, 24 lines in all which gives us a total of 408 symbols in total (17 x 24 = 408).

What relevance, if any, could this seemingly random number have? Well, 408 is his house number. And finally, the first 4 letters in the 'My Name Is Cipher' line are AENK. We don't need to be anagram experts to work out that this is a clear anagram of the name 'KANE'. We all know Lawrence Kane is one of the suspects in the Zodiac case, but what many won't be aware of is how 24 and 408 are extremely specific to him and here is why.

Lawrence Kane was born in the year 1924. Kane's main residence was in South Lake Tahoe, in Zephyr Cove's Round Hill Village and his address was: 408 Mcfaul Way, Round Hill Village, Zephyr Cove, NV. So, combining the 408 cipher with the My Name Is Cipher, it is possible to conclude that his name is Kane, as he blatantly tells is in Stating 'My Name Is....AENK'. He was born in 1924, as he twice makes reference to, once in the 408 and then in the My Name Is Cipher. And finally, his address is, just like the number of symbols in the first Cipher, 408 McFaul Way.

Another 'Coincidence' regarding Zephyr Cove is, as I say on my site, is Ford Motor Company's two model's of vehicle released between 1966 and 72. One was called the Ford Zephyr, the other was the Ford Zodiac. Ford made and released a hybrid called, quite obviously, The Ford Zephyr-Zodiac. And let's not forget what Z said in the letter that accompanied the section of Cipher sent to the Chronicle: "I want you to print this cipher on the front page of your paper. In this cipher is my identity."
Now reading that at face value the natural assumption to make is that he is telling us that the message contained in the cipher contains his name. To accept Zodiac's letters and their messages at face value is to ignore the fact that this man loves word games (The Cipers, The misspelling of Paul Avery as Paul Averly that he underlines to remove any doubt as to whether it is deliberate or not). Anyway, that's for another post another time. One thing I believe Zodiac exploited and probably derived extreme satisfaction from is knowing that his letters will be read at face value for what they appear to say on the surface and his hidden message or meaning will be completely missed hidden in plain sight. (When nobody seemed to take any notice of the 408's Cipher being three sections of eight lines totalling 24, he then makes it impossible to overlook in a future Cipher by writing one line of cipher in which he circles the number 8 three times. In another instance, he misspells Paul Avery as Paul Averly, but once again wants us to know this is no innocent mistake or spelling error and underlines part of Paul's name on the envelope to draw attention to the fact it's deliberate and that there is a method somewhere in his madness.) So when Zodiac says "In this Cipher is my identity" he may well mean that literally and means that the cipher itself, not the message within, contains his identity, or at least clues to it. Saying his identity is there doesn't necessarily mean his name. He probably knows that we will all assume he means his name is hidden within the coded message text and knows that we'll all be far too preoccupied with frantically attempting to decipher the code and reveal the message believing it to contain the offenders name to stop and notice that the actual clues to his identity are, as he said in the way he worded it, 'In this Cipher.'

Yes I agree, as I have said on previous posts he states in the 'Debut of Zodiac' Letter sent on August 4th 1969 'By the way, are the police having a good time with the code? If not, tell them to cheer up; when they do crack it, they will have me'.
But was he lying, because when the 408 Cipher was deciphered, on the 17th line, symbols 3 to 6 spells HAVE and directly underneath on the 18th line, symbols 4 and 5 spell ME.
So he wasn't lying they did HAVE ME.
I always believed he chose his murders by date as I have explained here http://www.zodiacciphers.com/1/post/2013/01/the-zodiacs-little-list-of-13.html.
On the My Name is...Cipher he says 'I have killed ten people to date'. I think this should be inferred that he has killed based on the calendar, not that this is his running total. I think this because on the 13 Hole Postcard about 6 months later he communicates the sentence 'The pace isn't any slower; in fact it's just one big thirteenth'. Supposedly his victim tally, but I believe in the later communications he was dropping us hints to his method of madness. Bearing in mind this 13 Hole Postcard was the contact directly after the Little List Letter, what does one big 13th mean.
On the 13th line of his Mikado recital are the words ARE UP IN DATES at the start of the line. These could and I stress could, may be examples of his wordplay.
The dates he killed pretty much all of the most high profile victims attributed to him from Lake Herman Road through to the Donna Lass disappearance ALL fall on the first day of the 13 Moon Calendar, and there are four more that fit the criteria after that, with the last being Lynn Derrick on 26th July 1972.
The 26th July is the exact date of the Little List letter and the date the 13 Moon Calendar starts, unlike the Gregorian calendar. Also the Mikado he uses in the Little List communication started on March 14th 1885, this is the first day of the week on the 13 Moon calendar also, along with the 340 Cipher and countless more.
The odds are pretty extreme for coincidence.

So long as the case file reads 'Case: Zodiac. Offender Name: Unknown. Current Status: Unknown.' then everything remains a possibility as to the why he did what he did etc. But going back to the 408 Cipher for a second. If we are to believe that Zodiac (The Man) would go to the trouble and effort of creating and encrypting a message in a coded Cipher, complete with his own Key, then we would all likely assume, and expect, the message to be very relevant, important and useful if broken because at the end of the day, he's gone to this great effort to mask this message by encrypting it in a cipher so it must be of at least some significance? And what extremely relative information did we discover behind the symbols? What wisdom did the writer want to unleash on us readers? Expectations running high as the message comes forth...."I LIKE KILLING PEOPLE BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH FUN...." and etc. A totally useless rant filled with babbling nothingness that was, it seems, a complete waste of time and effort on his part for deciding that he can only tell us that this is about his mission to collect himself some slaves for his further 'Afterlife' in a place called PARADICE. Yes, of course that is really what he really believed! The serious point being, he encrypted such a useless babbling message that the message couldn't have been the reason or point of the Cipher because it was so meaningless and no point at all hiding such nothingness behind encrypted Cipher Code. If there was any purpose or point at all to the cipher message, it was to mislead using suggestion. He writes a message knowing that the reader will conclude this message and it's authors belief can only come from a deranged, psychopathic mind. He offers the reader a suggestion, they in turn suggest he's a 'pathological, psycho killer.' And in the process, nobody see's the Cipher itself and the clues it holds because everyone is too busy trying to get past the symbols to the message under it and so we can't see the forest because there are far too many trees in the way.

Just joking. It seems that a technical error occurred when posting. I pressed submit the first time and after 2 or 3 seconds came a response message (in red font and everything!) saying 'We are sorry, but due to a technical fault, mainly you being of Welsh Nationality, your comment has not been posted now go away.' That is obviously me paraphrasing what the message said (lol). No but in all seriousness, I was told the first two comments had failed to post to the site and after a third attempt in which I shortened the messages content by half and it still had the error message I refreshed the page to find all three comments had actually posted which is great because I now come across as so desperate to get a point over to readers that I will simply post the same message countless times until people agree. :-/

We can also say with a degree of certainty that the letter sent to Attorney Melvin Belli is a genuine Zodiac letter and as such, note that it was sent on Dec 20, 1969, the anniversary of 'the good times' he had on Lake Herman Road one year prior. So we know he has, at least once, marked the anniversary of a murder he committed by writing on the anniversary of it.
Now I know many question the authenticity of the 1978 'I am back with you' letter but that was sent on April 24th of 1978. On April 24, 1974 Dana Lull was abducted & murdered by man that either had an identical vehicle and physical description to that of Larry Kane, or, more plausibly, it was Larry Kane. I am not sure I would go as far as to say I am 'The Man' when it comes to Zodiac, rather simply A man, one of many who, like yourself you state have become recently, obsessed with this case only in my case that obsession has been subsiding quite a lot in recent Months.

Maybe I need something to happen to renew my belief that the road leading to the answers in this case are not deliberately being closed off.

PARADICE...It looks like once again, as always, FOLLOW THE MONEY...

In this case I suggest GOLD...looking at the D.U.M.B's map (Deep Underground Military Bases) support several conclusions:

1) Charles Manson did plan to go live underground when Helter Skelter came down...just N0t in a cave or under a rock.

2) seems to confirm Military/FBI/Mob connections to Manson as his travels follow those tunnels' entrances and would provide easy fast and virtually undetectable transport.

3) these so called Zodiac communications were instructions to cell groups...(Mae Brussell)

Their was a real estate development out near Meyers at the far end if town- The name was Tahoe Paradise. There was also a very small college with a very good ski team. You guys are talking about 3 different places though- South Lake Tahoe, Calif, Round Hill Village and Zephyr Cove are both in Nevada- Always caused confusion with Donna Lass case- She lived in Calif, but worked at the Sahara in Nevada.

Cheers Alex, we also know that the 'Sleeping Bag Murders' of Thomas Victor Dolan (17) and Homer Clyde Shadwick (19), discovered by a passerby on a beach in Santa Barbara was the anniversary of the Blue Rock Springs attack and the 'Pines Card' stating 'Sought Victim' 12, out of sequence with the rest of the cards was the anniversary of the 'Modesto Attack' on Kathleen Johns. Incidentally, the Belli Letter on December 20th 1969, you refer to, stated a search for a 9th and 10th victim. Two months later possibly Hood and Garcia took the total to 10. Had he then successfully killed Kathleen Johns and Jennifer, her daughter, on March 22nd 1970, then the victim count would have reached 12. Strange then that the Pines Card exactly one year later specified that he sought for 'Victim 12'. Was this an admission by the Zodiac Killer that it was indeed him, but he failed.

Well on the topic of Z's letter and/or Ciphers, the 408 solving by Don H using such simplistic logic of 'First word will be I' has never sat well with me. I mean The FBI Cryptographers, Naval code breakers, and CIA's cryptography experts all tried, and successfully failed at deciphering the 408. But, what's this....Here comes a man with a book, 'Fletcher Pratt's Secret & Urgent' and he's going to crack the entire code by uncovering one letter of it. Graysmith stated that Don saw double symbols to work out that double L's were the probable two setters represented to enable him to uncover 'Kil' or Killing' and that's all lovely and great and stuff, except it's simply not posible. Zodiac used many substitution symbols when representing the letter L and did not double up the same symbol when enciphering 'Kill' so it's not possible to do that. Since my theory(Zodiac Operation Theory) involves all of the above I do N0t trust any of these agencies' results. That's a period.

The 408 looks like Kane's address 408 McFaul and the "good times' type references appear to be finger pointing designed to distract and divert attention...from the obvious person/s.

Too many of these coincidences for them to be ignored as such.

Many clews lead to Robert E Hunter Jr and it is a FACT that he was inordinately involved with Donna Lass and Lawrence Kane...N0t to mention Bruce Davis, Darlene Ferrin and Paul Stine.

Bruce Davis and Nancy Pitman aka Brenda McCann(sp) kN0w exactly what went down.

Nancy and Steve Grogan are free because they told the FBI EVERYTHING and still do.

Pitman and her family still have property or access to property at the North Shore of Lake Tahoe practically next door neighbors of the Hunter's and Qvale's

Qvale is listed in the Truckee Lake Tahoe 2014-2015 phone book. Also new listing of Maloff at one the previous address' of Kane 1302 Cave Rock, Zephyr Cove, Nv.

Again, too many clues overtly pointing to these people and places to be dismissed as coincidences.

The date of Hunter Jr's divorce?..there must have been a real mess with those two...Sylvia and 'Bob'.

All centered around Hunter's Jr and Sr/Donna Lass/Lawrence Kane/Darlene Ferrin/Paul Stine and definitely includes Bruce Davis/Nancy Pitman and the NORTH SHORE of Lake Tahoe.

In the post prior to this one (there wasn't a 'reply' option for some reason on that specific post) you mentioned Robert E. Hunter, Darlene Ferrin, Kane & Paul Stine all knowing each other, or at the very least being acquainted. I cannot remember for the life of me where I read this previously so the source of the claim remember but, I know I read somewhere that when Paul first came to live in San Francisco, he briefly resided at 217 Eddy street, a 'Hotel' which was back then, by all accounts, a half-way house. I think this claim was made by either Paul's brother Joe, or sister Carol. If that could be substantiated then that would be huge! Paul Stine, a Zodiac victim, residing in a halfway house where one Lawrence Kane, Zodiac Suspect, also lived for a time. I have heard claims that Dee and her first Husband also resided there for a short time until the found a home. How accurate any of these claims are I cannot say. My posting them should not be interpreted as myself being a believer in them, I simply don't know and will reserve any conviction either way pending evidence found and shown to prove whether one or more of these people ever resided on Eddy.

Hey Rich, turns out I had been given accurate info when being told Kaye/Kane was of significant intelligence. Found Newspaper articles where an associate of Kaye's states "He has extensive knowledge of Civil Law & that will get him off this latest charge again."
Many many disgruntled people attempted to file litigation against Larry Kaye for a variety of reasons & almost every time, Kaye was victorious. Here's couple of links, the first one is a report in the press of a police officer sued by Kaye for excessive violence..Z profile 'Indicates a grudge against Law Enforcement...'

In every press related article I have come across in regards to Kaye, every single one of the refers to "Handsome Salesman' or 'The Handsome' Larry Kaye. What did the three girls sunbathing at Berryessa say about the man watching them atop the hilll? Described him as "Around 40, GOOD LOOKING'

Great discovery, how did you find these after all this time. Brain injury or not, he appeared certainly capable of thorough reasoning. If you subscribe to an accomplice theory at Berryessa,, then I assume that Kane was the murderer and not the accomplice!

I was emailed a link to these articles Rich. And the Berryessa accomplice thing, I don't know, I think I was probably wrong about that. I just can't understand why responding cops coming from Napa would simply drive past a vehicle or vehicles going in the opposite direction and not radio for roadblock's to be set up at both Napa & St Helena's exit's off of Knoxville Rd. I mean for me, theres been a double stabbing at Berryessa, any vehicle heading away from the area is one that I, as a cop, would want to have stopped.

PEEK THROUGH THE PINES and THE SEARCH FOR DONNA LASS links contain more newspaper clippings about Kaye...very interesting as there are plenty of connections to the 1960's TV shows...

One of these "connections" is Edward Wayne Edwards of Deer Lodge Montana....Bujok, Valentine/Dryman

.Edwards (in SF 1967-1972) was on several of these TV shows and his 'specialty', before he was a 'changed man', was framing/setting up otherwise innocent people.

Story goes that he was setting up Dryman/Valentine, and that's why Dryman disappeared.

His Aunt Bea was working in a bar at the corner of Mason and Geary AND lived in Presidio Heights at the time of the Paul Stine murder.

According to one of these news articles Larry Kaye planned the jewel heist of heiress Shirley Carmel in a bar with a professional thief. LOL

The distance from the crime scene to the end of the Knoxville Road according to Google Maps is about 11 minutes (7 miles). He could have reached here at 6.41 pm at the earliest. Dennis Land, first on the scene was reported to have arrived at 7.05 pm. At 7:05, Land radioed Bill White that he was 10-97—at the scene. If this is so he would not have passed Zodiac.

Taken from the police report "William White stated that at approximately 18.55 hours he was on routine patrol around the Lake Berryessa area when he received a call from Park Headquarters to proceed to the Rancho Monticello Resort where a person was reporting a possible stabbing. White proceeded to the Rancho Monticello Resort, where he was contacted by Archie E White, Elizabeth White and Ronald Fong". They then went via speedboat, eventually arriving at Lake Berryessa. They discovered Cecelia Shepard, before meeting Dennis Land who had Bryan Hartnell in his pick up truck. White radioed in to Park Headquarters to call the Sheriff's Office to dispatch an ambulance. This was post 7.05 pm. White attempted to interview both victims. Later the ambulance arrived. Even if Dennis Land had come from the end of Knoxville Road, the Zodiac Killer would have been long gone.

Napa Sheriff Dave Collins said he arrived at the scene at roughly the same time as Dpty. Land. He stated "It took us about a half an hour from Napa and/or St Helena to arrive at the location. We later found out that the crime had happened at least a half an hour before we were notified & we feel that a good hour has gone by."
So based on that it would appear your correct. However, Collins next sentence is kind of odd as he states: "And i figue, with the timing we have discovered, that the Zodiac came down the road and passed me at some point on his way into Napa to make his boastful phone call."

Did you ever N0tice that Hines' report lists Kane living on Eddy St. in SF and there is an address for 455 Eddy St Apt 905 in SF under the name Dave Bond(??) in Darlene's personal address book? Do you kN0w if this has ever been looked into? Most likely just aN0ther coincidence but I'm a snoop Thanks!

The guy's name was Dave Pond, and he certainly did live there around 1969; Sandy and I looked into that a bit several months back but never came to any conclusions other than it might have been a coincidence. Hines claims Kane lived at 217 Eddy St in the "Clark Hotel".....It was actually called the Clark Apartments, and it's only 2 blocks from 455 Eddy where there was an L C Cane who lived in apartment 1109 in 1965-66, then a Laurence V Cave from 1966-74. If Kane really did live on Eddy St it had to have been at 455, since that was the only person with a name resembling Kane's living within several blocks of that area in 1969. So, it turns out Pond and Kane lived only two floors apart. N0t two blocks.

Yes Robin, Harvey said how and why he came to suspect Kane. He said he went to Tahoe to talk to the people who worked with Donna and asked them did any of them remember anyone at the Tahoe Hotel that seemed odd or strange that they remember. He said that without exception, her former colleagues said yes there was one guy, Larry Kane. That's how he came to investigate Larry.

In the 1969-70 volume of Polk's San Francisco city directory, there's a listing for one Lawrence M. Kane, general agent with the Massachusetts Indemnity and Life Insurance Co. Per the directory, he had an office at 1255 Post St, which would be about a four minute drive from the Clark Hotel.

Fine...however N0 one seems to find where and when he changed his name to Kane and then to Cane which the U.S. Navy has buried him under.

I think, but not at all 100% sure on this, but I think he was approached by someone who either asked him diretly to look into Donna's disappearence or, if not directly asked, then spoke in detail to Harvey about the missing Nurse down In Tahoe.
Tell you what, I'll check with Destry, not sure he'll know but he said he and his Father did have a couple long discussions in relation to Donna, Kane and Zodiac so I'll ask him.

Were you ever able to find out who asked or why Harvey Hines was involved to begin with in the Donna Lass case?

For some reason it seems important to kN0w who/why Harvey got involved with this case.

P.S. Harvey Hines did N0t get involved with Donna Lass case until 1973 and that is when he became aware of Larry Kane and his connection and presence at SAHARA TAHOE at the time Donna Lass went missing.
