Celtic Cross

The Zodiac created four ciphers, of which only one has ever been solved and confirmed by overwhelming consensus. The third code is simply too short to achieve any meaningful decryption and the 32-Symbol Button letter code has only three repeating characters, making these two codes, without a key, effectively unbreakable. If we had the key however, then we would be back in business.

It is perfectly reasonable after the solve by Donald Gene and Bettye June Harden in the August of 1969, to believe that all the remaining ciphers contain a message, after all, what would be the point of them other than a joke on Zodiac's part. It is my contention that the remaining three ciphers may have been linked by religion (and Jesus Christ in particular).

The Zodiac chose a Celtic Cross style moniker, talked of "paradice" and the "afterlife," and placed crucifix style designs in his Halloween and 13-Hole postcards. You could say the Zodiac Code was the forerunner to the Da Vinci Code.
The key to the Zodiac Code is the previously discussed 13-Symbol cipher, where the Zodiac splits the alphabet A through M to expose perfect symmetry in the third cipher. This is the template we shall use in the 13-Symbol and 32-Symbol ciphers, and in both instances arrive at exactly the same holy number. The Zodiac crosshairs can be noted in every cipher or code, so it is imperative we derive a mathematical figure for this moniker. But first we shall present the Zodiac Code that will be used on both ciphers.

The alphabet on the right has been split symmetrically into two halves. A through M was used in the Embedded Symmetry article, in which only the numbers 3, 1 and 5 were ever generated. The number 315 can be generated in several ways using the Zodiac Killer communications, but the simplest way is to take the Zodiac horoscope.

The Zodiac used what appeared to be an upside-down Aries symbol on the April 20th 1970 13-Symbol cipher. Many people also considered that the three circled 8's were in fact three circled Taurus symbols. But the reason the Zodiac Killer circled them, was possibly so they could be interpreted as both. Since we are dealing with the Zodiac horoscope, we will take the characters as one Aries and three Taurus symbols.

On the left is the Zodiac horoscope placed into the Zodiac Code (above).
This generates the figure 315 for the Zodiac crosshairs.
Because we will be using Aries and Taurus in the 13-Symbol cipher, I will explain how to arrive at the figures in brackets:
ARIES = A+R+I+E+S = 1+5+5+5+6 = 22.
TAURUS = T+A+U+R+U+S = 7+1+6+5+6+6 =31.
ARIES =22, TAURUS = 31.

Before we move on it is important to mention the following again.
In Christian numerology, the number 888 represents Jesus, or sometimes more specifically Christ the Redeemer. This representation may be justified either through gematria, by counting the letter values of the Greek transliteration of Jesus' name, or as an opposing value to 666, the number of the beast. Wikipedia. In English gematria the figure for Jesus is 444.

If the Zodiac was creating his own bible code and referencing the rebirth of Christ using the number 8 for infinity, one would hope to find the figure 444 in the 13-Symbol cipher shown below.

Let us proceed and place the numbers alongside the relevant characters (see below).
Notice again how the alphabetical characters only produce the figures 3, 1 and 5, as does the figure 315 representing the Zodiac crosshairs. The total value of the 13-Symbol cipher is 444, representing Jesus.

We shall now move on to the 32-Symbol cipher mailed just two months after the previous cipher. It contained only three repeating characters, the letter C, the letter O and the clear triangle, making it impossible to solve without a recognized key. This led me to believe that these two ciphers were only solvable by some form of mathematical key.

Below I have used the same technique, using the Zodiac Code, representing the letters of the 32-Symbor cipher by numbers. The Zodiac crosshairs are again attributed the 315 value and the Aries symbol the figure 22 once more. This time however, we have an Omega symbol, so we have to attribute it a figure. OMEGA = O+M+E+G+A = 2+1+5+7+1 = 16. The six geometric shapes in the 32-Symbol cipher cannot be attributed a name, and therefore cannot be attributed a value. They have been marked with a red X. You can see below, that when the numerical values are added up we arrive at the figure 444 once again. Zodiac representing the figure 888, and both the remaining ciphers totaling 888. Whether it be 444 or 888, the reference to Jesus or Jesus Christ through the bible code of the Zodiac Killer is certainly possible.

The 408 cipher was divided up into three parts and mailed to the San Francisco Chronicle, Vallejo Times-Herald and San Francisco Examiner newspapers, but the final 18 characters of this cipher were unable to be decoded. Many speculated as to whether this was just filler to create three equal parts of 8 lines. Was this the rudimentary beginnings of 888, that he would carry through to his remaining ciphers and the name Zodiac itself ?

Richard regarding religion has there been any verified evidence of any religion believing in slaves in the afterlife?This belief had to have come from somewhere. When he refers to the Exorcist as a”comedy”I sort of get the feeling he might not take anything involving god or the devil very seriously.i don’t believe that he believed in a higher power.

Unless he is mocking exorcism as a practice. I understand why people don't believe Zodiac was religious, although I tend to the idea he is.
Today in the USA 83% of Americans identify themselves as Christians, an extremely high percentage. I suspect it was higher in the late 60s and early 70s, so if nothing else the odds are in favour of him being a Christian of some form.

Thanks for the info Richard.Just another of the many clues that might lead us to Zodiac but most likely another rabbit hole. We’ve tried to crack him by religion and even sexuality and it seems like we’re not any closer to the truth. He was definitely a historian so I wouldn’t doubt his knowledge of Norse mythology so I think there could be a connection there but that’s pretty much all I can guess at this point.

My personal profile of the zodiac is that he was a full-time school teacher. I am in agreement that in the late 60s he was in his late 30s early 40s and that he would’ve been teaching for a while at that point. I think he even taught at religious themes schools for awhile. For instance St. Joseph’s or Irvington just for example. Again I’m very intrigued by the frequency he uses the word guess and how he uses it. Just something that I noticed as a pattern especially after several years have gone by and he seems he’s gained a lead or put a considerable gap between law enforcement and himself.

I have given your profile of Zodiac - possible being a teacher consideration.
The Hardens were teachers. So were friends Don Cheney and Arthur L. Allen. Just wonder if they ever teamed up against the teens they taught. There is so much circumstantial stuff on them as duos but if they did meet up at a teach function and decide to work together - crazy.

Don Cheney and Arthur Leigh Allen were pals they met in 1962 (just before the first suspected Zodiac attack in 1963)and began a friendship which lasted until 1969, after a New Year's Day conversation in which Allen said he was thinking of killing kids(According to Don Cheney he drew the line at that, Don makes himself out to be heroic.). Detective Balwart believed Cheney's story about Arthur L. Allen. Although, he also thought that Cheney was more involved than he says.

ALA's drivers license says he was six foot, two hundred and fifty pounds. He was a bad-ass. He was a big time springboard diver as well as a scuba diver and was a regular swimmer to boot. The Zodiac was a wimp however. Lee was not the smaller Zodiac. Lee was a white Mr. "T". And, he "enjoyed a good tussle". He could handle himself no problem. He was convicted of a sex offense, but served his time. He was persecuted for the rest of his life by people like Graysmith. They used the idea that nobody cares about someone's rights if they're a convicted child molester. Therefore,one could get away with smearing ALA for being the Zodiac. The thing is however ALA did not fit the descriptions of the Zodiac. He was a balding roundheaded man much larger than the Zodiac. Leigh may have been the Patsy in the group.
The Zodiac also was fearful of getting physical and stabbed girls in the back. Leigh was a loud brute and a bar-room brawler. He was pudgy faced and did not fit the description of a little man with a pop belly. He was barrel chested and did not need glasses. He did not have a widows peak either. Don Cheney however did. He was a civil engineer/book worm, and was the one first to accuse ALA of being the killer. Don may have protested too much though.

Don is a closer resemblance to the known sketches of the killer, and his physical appearance, personality, and being a civil engineer all fits more accurately into the profile of the Zodiac. Most of the evidence that seems to point to Allen could have been taken by Cheney, who was a supposed friend of ALA ,"with friends like him who needs enemies"and he got rid of (namely"boots and other items"of evidence he says for ALA ) key things to divert the blame and attention of the police from ALA. Cheney also wore similar glasses to those seen on the sketches of the suspect. Nobody seems to have kept track of Don. But, Allen was in and out of jail for child molestation. As a result they kept watch of his every move. In California sex offenders have to register with the city/police as to their address at all times or go back to prison. Once he was in the system he couldn't sneeze w/o notifying the cops. The perfect guy for Cheney to blame.
If you look at Don Cheney on the other hand. Always trying to point at ALA, and always trying to insert himself into the Zodiac case. Don Cheney has said a lot of incriminating things - like putting his finger prints in paraffin. Licking stamps (he says as a friend) and putting them on envelopes for ALA. Guys with FBI dossiers, should never be suspected - as they (The authorities) know everything in the world about them - in this instance ALA. The people that are truly suspect are those whom do not have an extensive rap sheets. We only have the good side of the resume on them. Which only gives you half of the story. No body is all bad, nor is anyone all good in my experience.
Also, there may have been a team of teachers working together. If the Hardens perhaps wrote and ciphered the codes, while Allen and Cheney could have done most of the leg work. I don't know any of this for certain. But, this is something that you should see about what Bettye June Harden seem to have confessed.

Aurthur Allen did not have the ability to carryout these crimes alone. If he did them at all. The only way - would have been with the help of Cheney. With Don pointing his finger at Allen all these years I think some of us should at least point back at him.

You have nailed it, Mr. Graysmith was on the front line of the Zodiac case. He has also made a lot of money and subsequently became the only “go to” name associated with the Zodiac case. All it will take to dethrone mr. Graysmith and his ALA conclusion is not for someone NOT to bring a name and declare “I’ve found the Zodiac!” because that option has been worn out! No one will believe you anyways, even the police. It will take a fresh approach on explaining all the letters with a new twist. Someone knows who he is and there’s no doubt in my mind that they have tried and been shut down due to the system and Mr. Graysmith being the end all to be all. We know the Zodiac was multilayered in his correspondence with any entity. The Zodiac was his “Life!”. He ate sleeped and drank his alter ego! It fulfilled him.
I believe he was a school teacher who has a degree in philosophy, ( the word “thing”comes up way too much! ) I also think he was obsessed with Einstein and the theory of relativity. (Events) he’s controlled by Space and Time. He’s not a recluse, he loves attention! He had a social circle. I think he was single and hung out with Billiards players. He was attracted to the “non” family lifestyle. I will agree with you BB, he stabbed in the back because he was a control freak! In my opinion a “pussy” wouldn’t even attack anyone. He’s certainly sick. He could just integrate.
