THE ALBANY, FAIRFIELD AND 1987 LETTERS ENHANCED

Sent to the Albany Times Union newspaper and postmarked August 1st 1973. Obtained by Tom Voigt of Zodiackiller.com, the letter threatened to kill a female on August 10th at 5.00 pm on a shift change, just nine days after its mailing date. An FBI cryptanalysis unit deciphered the code material at the foot of the letter to reveal 'ALBANY MEDICAL CENTER. THIS ONLY THE BEGINNING.' The threat on a nurse, had menacing overtones reminiscent to the disappearance of Donna Ann Lass from the Sahara Tahoe Hotel on September 6th 1970. Her body has never been recovered.
This letter in all likelihood was not penned by the Zodiac letter, and despite its threatening tone, no murders or abductions occurred on the specified date, or even close to it.

Not a handwriting expert Richard, but the printing included in the link below, which Sandy says is from her suspect Kane, taken around 1986 or 87, looks practically identical to the 1987 you have here on display.. Take a look, would love to get some closeup side by sides...

The Fairfield Letter was most likely written by a Manson follower playing the game of "Zodiac copycat". The amateurish bit of code probably just says "ZODIAC", although I once considered it could say "OR ELSE". It is difficult to know if all of the symbols in the different quadrants of the crosshairs symbol are meant to be part of the code or are just there for decoration. It is probably just meant to suggest that the Zodiac entity is everywhere, NSWE, and nobody knows where he will strike next.

The letter connects well with the general tone and subject matter of the KHJ-TV letter, but appears to have been penned by a different individual.

I find myself having a chuckle at Dave Oranchak's "solution". It's a fairly safe bet he is completely and utterly wrong.

For what it is worth, here is one of my solutions.

STABLE I BE AND ON ROAD. WELL. CONCENSUSS HI. STANDS HERE IN A AICU.

AICU = Albany ICU

Suggests the writer had just had an operation, but recovering well.

I have considered the possibility that the Zodiac did succeed in killing someone at Albany Medical Center. Just because it was shift change doesn't mean he meant to kill a nurse (they would be on high alert given the letter). However, shift change is a dangerous time for patients even when the Zodiac is not near, and especially so if he was actually in the hospital. Checking the census for patients who died that night or were found dead in their beds the next morning might yield results.It might even have been his roommate - he never limited himself to killing only the fairer sex.

Below is another look at the first 12 symbols of the Albany Letter cipher. I used Oranchak's solution which was used from the FBI solution of the un-redacted parts.

I believe the first 12 symbols used a more complex cipher than a monoalphabetic one (simple substitution), because it was Z's name.

I believe the 4th symbol was used for both the letters J and N and was used in positions 8 and 11. That 4th symbol even looks like a combined J and N if you rotate it clockwise!

Interesting in hearing what the community thinks.

From my reading Toots, you believe the named individual was a male, not a female. Have you followed up the name for any connections? Do you think the letter was genuine Zodiac material?

Yes, I sent my 2 years of research to police, last year. They then did their own research and sent my work to FBI. FBI just came back with their analysis, and recently DNA was sent to lab and to be loaded to Gedmatch.
