MICHAEL COLE - THE ZODIAC REVISITED BOOK [2019]

Picture
Michael Cole, creator of the website Zodiac Revisited is anticipating publication of his book 'The Zodiac Revisited-New Insights into History's Most Enigmatic Serial Killer' sometime in 2019. After several setbacks, the book has now expanded into three volumes: [1] The Facts of the Case [2] Analysis and Fact-Based Speculation and [3] Tying It All Together.

Taking a neutral standpoint from the perspective of Zodiac suspects, Michael will be speculating on the motivation behind the killer regarding his murders and communications, that has fueled many a debate over the last fifty years. In typical modest fashion, Michael Cole states "Perhaps it will help to move the case forward and contribute to the eventual identification of the Zodiac. Or, perhaps it will be just another one of the too-many-to-count analyses that are continuously consumed by the black hole that is the case of the Zodiac. The answer to those and many other interesting questions await us in our shared future."  Michael has kindly sent me a preview of 'A Methodology for Murder' from Volume II, which I enjoyed reading immensely, and therefore expect a good reception to his book when it is finally released in the coming months. If it takes any longer, I fully expect him to add a fourth volume!

In a recent article on his website entitled 'The Zodiac's 50th Anniversary-A Few Thoughts' he outlines the volumes and chapters from the upcoming book, and a little bit more - which I am sure will be a valuable addition to any Zodiac bookshelf.

Yes,in the early days of the internet, for me,which is only actually 6-7,Michael Cole's site was always my first port of call,on matters ''Zodiac''.

''Gumshoe'' activities had taken precedence, prior to this, otherwise I would have been ''here'' sooner.

Cole's featured articles were always the best,by far,and he attracted the genuinely notable writers of the time, such as Michael Kelleher and Nicholas Styx.

Much looking forward to his book, and recent publicity has sent me back,on a more regular basis,to his very good site.

Just as a plug,for myself and zodiackillermystery.freeforums,net

If I may,Richard, direct any of your readers to the site,to find the final, and unequivocal solution to the ''My name is -------'' cipher.

In the Cipher section,with thread title : '' Z13 - The Zodiac's ''figgurative'' thievery ''.

Thank you - and I will hold back from fending off the brickbats, for now.

It certainly works both ways Rubislaw, very innovative. I certainly won't fire any brickbats at you. What is your inkling on the "Irish Card", hoaxer or something more sinister.

Well thanks very much,Richard.I had been playing around with the idea, that the solution, contained the word ''cemetery'',for a couple of years....but I'm just relieved to have a ''monkey off my back'',now.

The inspiration came from the ''Hood and Garcia'' murders, and was watching about an hour of footage, with a keen cemetery visitor,at The Santa Barbara Cemetery, that looks on to the ''East Beach'',where ''Hood and Garcia'' were murdered.

So,I was in the right ''ball park'',but ''up the wrong alley''.I just couldn't get ''Santa Barbara'' out of my mind....then started to think about the song,''Barbara Anne'',with the ''Ba..ba...ba...'' bit.

And then....Bingo !

Yes...this ''Irish Card'' hoaxer has been bombarding Ricardo's site, again.I believe I communicated with the poster,a couple of years ago...and is actually a pretty decent fellow. His ''wares'' are actually ''party accessories'',and he sometimes goes by the name ''Balloon Captain'',

Perhaps the ''problem'' is that he is sponsored by a British/Irish betting company....who are all very wealthy....and have the resources to use such tools,as ''interesting'' depictions,to bother the more ''purist'' sites.

I am being ''spammed to pieces'' at the moment, and may have to take more of a back seat, for a while,on matters ''Zodiac''.

Time to prepare a dossier for ''that'' politician,I think.

Thanks again, for your comments.....some folk will never be happy,if it transpires that the Zodiac, never actually left his true identity [?].

Nice to see Michael finishing a hard earned book.

Probably one of the best Zodiac book covers.

I think the Internet information exchange and the internet allowing books like this to be widely distributed will not allow the Zodiac Killer case go the way of Jack the Ripper....Unsolved.

Without the Internet....Richard Grinell and his fine work on the Zodiac Killer case would probably not exist due to many variables. The main variable, the ability not to reach the masses.

Pre-Internet.....I think the fine younger Englishman, Richard Grinell, might had a interest in this case but was limited to keeping theories and thoughts to himself with limited investigative exploration.

Keep it going Richard!

Thanks Shawn, that is kind of you to say. I am looking forward to Michael Cole's book and he has obviously had to put his website on the backburner for quite a while to concentrate on his book. Hopefully I'll get a chance to review it and do a follow-up. I know several of my articles have been generated off the back of his 'My Name is Cipher Motivation' article, so I'm eager to see what else he has to offer. I'd never heard of the Zodiac Killer in 2011, so I know the value of the internet, being able create a website and to interact with all you good folks.

I am a newbie and Richard’s site has been an invaluable resourse for me. Sometimes I get a little confused with the chronology of events and letters as they are explained in the articles and posts. This new book will tie everything together and give me a more solid foundation of knowledge to build on. Also, Randall Clemons material is also very insightfull. I am going to purchase volume one when it first becomes available. Keep up the great work everybody, I am running out of years.

Just found out,if of interest to your readers,Richard, that the word ''nerver'' does exist.

''Nerver'' as expressed in Z148,as a substitute for ''Never''.

Nerver is a noun, meaning something that gives one courage, like an alcoholic drink, for example.

''Dutch Courage''.

With the new solution to the ''My name is -----'' cipher,Richard,it matters not a whole lot, what others may think....for,at only 13 characters,in length,it would be difficult to actually ''prove'' any solution.

But,giving the solution some further thought [ Ali Baba's Alias ],there does appear to be a link, between Zodiac's Z13 cipher, and his attack,at Lake Berryessa.

A dig,perhaps,at a cover up,on reportage of the attack.

What we know, from the pathologist's report,on Cecelia Shepard, alone,is that the Zodiac employed a ''sword bayonet'' specifically,as opposed to a ''knife''.

But the weapon of choice, was reported as a ''kitchen knife''.We can surmise,I believe, that the authorities made that decision,so as not to alarm the public,unduly....since a ''sword bayonet'' tends to conjure up imagery of a skilled military/Rambo madman on the loose.

This cover up,on reportage, ''must'' have been noted,by the Zodiac.

Hence, the ''My name is ----'' cipher was used as a ''dig'' at the authorities, for their misrepresentation,of what was actually,a ''sword bayonet''.

Explanation :

Traditionally,Ali Baba is usually referred to as just a ''woodcutter''.It seems that a feature film,in the 1940's....and a later film, released,in 1965,gave a bit more ''icing'' to Ali Baba's background....being ''Son of The Mighty Caliph''.

The 1965 film,released at cinemas :

'' The Sword of Ali Baba ''

Yes,I wouldn't wish to caste aspersions on other's offerings....and particularly as the cipher is relatively short,at 13 characters.

But there is the question of why,on earth would the Zodiac give away his real name,as some sort of ''prize'' [?].

What I find intriguing, also,is that the ''The Bleeding Knife of Zodiac'',as an etching, included in the Fairfield letter of December 16th,seems also to be a ''dig'' at the authorities.

In that, specifically,''The Bleeding Knife'' is a term of tradition, referring to a joke trick, played on an unsuspecting audience,at Halloween.

So,''two'' digs,perhaps....both with regard to reportage of Lake Berryessa ''events'' [?].

First the joke trick.....and then the ''Sword of Ali Baba'',as a reference,by inference.

From an unnamed poster, from an unnamed Zodiac site :

''If the Zodiac has a lot of Eastern European DNA cousin,it could point to Richard G...''

This poster goes on to speculate further, with reference to ''Genealogy'' DNA hunts, including Jewish elements, pointing to Kane, and ''British'' ones pointing to Allen or Sullivan.

If I might point out, firstly, that the ''British'' tend to be a bunch of ''mongrels'',and have always supposed that there was no such thing,as ''British'' genes.

Secondly,may I suggest,Richard,that this poster was ''unfortunate'',to use the term ''Richard G'' [?].

Who could he be referring to [?].Richard Grinell [?].

Perhaps it is the ultimate accolade, within the Zodiac ''community'',when one is touted,as possibly being The Zodiac.

If we didn't know better....that day has come,for you,Richard.

I'm sure he meant Richard Gaikowski, but if I was suspected of being the Zodiac Killer, it could be taken as a backhanded compliment, that my insights are so advanced, I must have first-hand knowledge of the crimes. However, I wasn't 5'10" at 7 years of age and I lived 5,000 miles away. Quite a good alibi I suspect.

Yes,that could be the ''problem''....for ''less seasoned'' sleuths....

That you know ''too'' much....and why [?].

There is a particular site, that have a ''ridiculous'' line up,of ''favoured'' suspects, including a certain ''Mr.Gaikowski'' who,has effectively been given ''neon lights'' status.

In case we might have overlooked him,for some reason [?].

I don't have anything against anyone for having suspects, I just know that with the 'evidence' presented, none would get convicted if they had entered a courtroom.I am sure Judith suspects Peter Plante, but don't recall her saying Peter is 100% Zodiac, I know for certain. If I knew who the Zodiac was I wouldn't be writing this now.

On the subject of ''the usual suspects'',as the ones that tend to appear ''fore and foremost'',on the Zodiac sites,....it does seem that the ones with possible ''merits'',in that they are proven killers, like Bruce Davies and Ted K....have never been officially suspected, anyway.

Somehow, none of them add up,for me....and I believe it is because they do not resonate with a certain ''warped charm'',that the Zodiac appeared to have.

I see the Zodiac, also,as being remarkably ''industrious'',in applying himself to the art of terrorism. The extent of belligerence, obstinacy and sheer ''stubborn-ness'' is phenomenal.

he just never knew when to quit.Perhaps, for instance, the ''Exorcist Doodle'',is the Zodiac's ''third'' dig,at the authorities, over their misrepresentation of the ''kitchen knife'',at Lake Berryessa....and that was five years on,from the attack.

I do have a personal suspect, but to me,''he'' is just a cartoon character, put to the back of my mind.

To be forever discovering new things, about this person,is an ''exploration'' of its very own.

Perhaps, even,Richard, that the Exorcist doodle was the ''fourth'' dig at the authorities, over the covering up of ''sword bayonet'',at Lake Berryessa [?].

That in fact, the Halloween Card's ''By Knife'',with its ''faulty'' capital ''N'',was the ''third'' dig [?].

There was clearly a ''cleverness'',in the Halloween Card, with ''N'',being the ''fourteenth'' letter of the alphabet.

Zodiac,may even have seen the ''N'' as representative of his ''Z1'' - a cryptogram,of one character [!].

Now,we know that the authorities ''did'' cover up,over ''sword bayonet''.So the real question is.....

Why did this ''convenience deceit '' by the authorities, seem to hit such a raw nerve, with the Zodiac ?

Did Zodiac really expect the authorities to document, and report on the Zodiac's activities...''precisely'' as the Zodiac enacted these elements of terrorism [?].

And,did ''By Knife'' resonate at an even deeper level of meaning, for him [?].

I differ from some contributors to this site, in that I don't see any connection to "knife" in the Exorcist letter. I wholeheartedly agree with Kevin Robert Brooks in that the characters are rearranged to spell "To Kill", which tires in perfectly with the sentences preceding it: "If I do not see this note in your paper, I will do something nasty, which you know I'm capable of doing- To Kill." It also mirrors the July 31st letters exactly.

"If I do not see this note in your paper, I will do something nasty, which you know I'm capable of doing- knife", doesn't read properly to me. Besides, I blew up the image and see no "e" anywhere.

The autopsy report on Cecelia Shepard read 'Dr DE Petris further stated that after examining the wounds inflicted on Miss Shepard it was his opinion that the weapon used would be from 9 to 11 inches in length and one inch in width and possibly sharpened on both sides on the top of the blade similar to a bayonet type weapon. In addition the wounds indicated it would be a heavy or sturdy type blade'. This was reported in the newspapers a few days later when it was described as a "butcher knife" with a 12" blade. It was also described as a dagger with a long thin blade. I am not of the opinion the sword bayonet was covered up, because Dr DE Petris only stated it was "similar to a bayonet style weapon", not that it was a bayonet. In terms of "by knife", I have no doubt the Fairfield letters were Zodiac, but the San Jose letter, the December 7th, and December 16th letters all contained "hints" to the 340 cipher. His fixation on the by knife, by gun, by rope and by fire, is for me anyway, prevalent in several communications. The "by" in all four quadrants of the 340 cipher are all touching the edge of the cipher or its midsection, but "by knife" mirrors the Halloween card in the bottom left corner. With "her" beginning the cipher, I extrapolated a crude "Her death by Knife. Zodiac". Bit weak admittedly. But if you look at this image I created for the 340 cipher, with knife, gun, rope and fire running from the end of "by", fitting them in all four quadrants, then "gun" running upwards is represented by a half-shaded circle, followed by two L's. The 38 character Fairfield letter has three consecutive characters OLL at the end of the top line. Not compelling, but I am leaning towards the San Jose letter and both Fairfield letters being crude pointers to the 340 solution. Unfortunately they are readily dismissed as Zodiac because of their careless design.
https://www.zodiacciphers.com/uploads/4/9/7/1/4971630/rope3_orig.gif

The Zodiac may have become impatient when giving us the name Zodiac (possibly hidden in the 18 characters), he gave clues in the Little List letter when he wrote about Mount Diablo and radians, in respect to his Button letter code, I think the 13 symbol cipher was Edgar Allan Poe related (mentioned by Marsh), so why shouldn't the San Jose and Fairfield letters be clues to the 340. Zodiac was impatient and couldn't resist writing to the newspapers, and I find it difficult to believe he could resist not handing us clues to the 340 cipher, in particular "by knife" in the bottom left corner of the cipher, exactly mirroring Halloween card. "By knife" actually overhangs "Paradice" in the design of the Halloween card, as it does in the 340 cipher. Whether this is accidental or deliberate is difficult to ascertain, but I cannot separate a connection between both these communications.

Much food for thought there,Richard, and I take in all that you have commented,on.

Yes indeed, the Exorcist doodle still leaves much up,for interpretation.

By its very nature, its a ''pastiche'' on ''something'' [?].I've always had it down as a bird's eye view of a submarine, being attended to by support vessels.....but that would be an ''exactitude''....simply ''trickery'' on Zodiac's behalf, that hints at words, that may be ''To Kill'',or some such subliminal statement....with ''Knife'' also possible.

Indeed, and in no way meaning to ''sweep'',on other aspects you mention....many things are conceivable.

This ''period'',after the killing spree that we know about,is most fascinating, since we assume,in retrospect, that the Zodiac was looking at possible ''directions'' he should go,with his terrorism....after the Stine murder....and starting,in effect, with his ''self celebratory'' ''340'' Cipher.

In a sense, therefore,a greater understanding of the solution composition,to that ''340'' Cipher, provides a key to that ''terrorism direction''.

And,this is where naturally I feel advantaged....claiming that I have solved it.It is certainly not my intention to sway others along, with my conclusions...but will be taking this up further, now.

Starting with Black Panther member,John Huggins' wife, who is still active,in the ''post-movement'',after its official disbandment,in1982.

It was in 1966,that the birth of the Black Panther movement, came about,in Oakland,CA.

And 50 years ago,on January 17th,that her husband and fellow member,Bunchy Carter, were assassinated at UCLA.

''COINTELPRO'' has much to answer for, historically, and this includes such ''warped gems'' as causing Hollywood actress,Jean Seaberg's suicide.

More recently,it is my claim that, the solution to the ''340'' forced a senior policeman,in command of 23,000 core officers, out of job, following a ''contrived'' political witch hunt.

But....one step at a time,for now.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guernsey_pound

Between 1830 and 1956, Guernsey's four coin denominations, 1, 2, 4 and 8 doubles, all carried very similar designs, with the Island's arms and name (spelled "Guernesey") on the obverse and the denomination and date on the reverse. In addition, the 8 double coins featured a wreath on both sides. The conversion rate of 1 Guernsey penny (8 doubles) = 1 British penny

Could the three circled 8's be these 8 doubles penny's? (The Zodiac's coded reference to the Three Penny Opera)

If this is a backward way of saying his name was "Mack the Knife". And being theatrical then the Zodiac would refer to the Exorcist scramble words as pointing to The MIKADO's little list of people to Kill. These opera's the Mikado and The Three Penny Opera are linked in time and space in both respects and they both used the term billow which further links them since this is a odd word and rarely used. So, I stand corrected To Kill Makes better sense than Knife. Too bad there is not the makings of the word "by" around to put in front of knife but we can't suppose he would forget something that important.

Happy New Year and Good Luck in 2019

There could be some loose connections to ''Mack the Knife'',BB.

In the ''Beggars Opera'',including the song,''Macheath'' is a highwayman, based on the real life thief,''Jack Sheppard'',who was want to threaten his victims, with a flick knife....and slash some of those ''unfortunates'',anyway.

Also,a line : ''There's a tugboat....down the river''

So,for the Exorcist doodle,''Jack'',''Knife'',''Tugboat'' and ''Sheppard'',could all be loose links.

Yes,this ''Jack Sheppard'' does seem to be a possible historical POI,with regard to an influence on Zodiac.

Forever, escaping the clutches of the Law,and even might have escaped the hangman's noose, had he hot broken a concealed knife, with which he intended to cut loose, his bindings.prior to the ''drop''.

Daniel Defoe,as a young journalist, first wrote about Sheppard, and so the Zodiac may have found out about this London based criminal, through works, such as ''Robinson Crusoe''.

Of course,The Beggars Opera,The Three Penny Opera and the song ''Mack the Knife'',furthering Sheppard's infamy.
