FULL MOON MADNESS

1/18/2018

PictureJohn Franklin Hood (24)
We certainly cannot take the early victim count of the Zodiac Killer as gospel, but bearing in mind the confidence of many regarding the murders of Robert Domingos (18) and Linda Edwards (17) on June 4th 1963 as possibly the precursor to the Lake Berryessa attack, the murders of John Franklin Hood (24) and Sandra Garcia (20) on February 21st 1970 appear a little under-reported. The Melvin Belli letter mailed on December 20th 1969 indicated the Zodiac Killer may have been looking for a ninth and possibly tenth victim - so bearing in mind his propensity of searching for a couple, this double murder is certainly in the correct timeframe, exactly bisecting the Melvin Belli and 13 Symbol cipher letter on April 20th 1970. In addition, this letter would claim ten victims.

The young couple had traveled to East Beach, Santa Barbara, near East Cabrillo Boulevard on Saturday afternoon, with John telling his parents he was to spend the day with his fiancee. Sandra had informed her parents that they "wouldn't be gone long." When they didn't return home that night the families were understandably concerned. Their bodies were discovered early Sunday morning by beachgoers, fully clothed underneath a blanket. They had been brutally beaten and stabbed, predominantly in the back and face. John Hood had been stabbed eleven times, but it appears Sandra Garcia suffered far worse, not dissimilar to the attack on Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepard at Lake Berryessa on September 27th 1969. Had the Zodiac Killer returned to a familiar method of execution after his venture into the heart of San Francisco, and was the Melvin Belli letter the foreboding of a man who had lost control once again.

The Oxnard Press Courier of John Franklin's home town reported the murders on February 23rd 1970: "
Oxnard Man, Fiancee Murdered Victims. Bodies Found on Beach; Man was decorated veteran John F. Hood found slain with fiancee. The brutally stabbed and beaten bodies of a highly decorated Vietnam veteran from Oxnard and his attractive fiancee were discovered Sunday on an east side Santa Barbara beach just below a cemetery. Police identified the victims as John Franklin Hood, 24. who was discharged from the Army last month with the rank of staff sergeant after a combat-filled year in Vietnam, and Sandra Garcia, 20. of Santa Barbara. Early-morning beachgoers discovered the fully-clothed bodies under a blanket and hailed a passing patrolman. Police immediately closed off the area and later gave some brief details. However, they did not release some information for what they termed was a “good reason.” Detectives have questioned relatives and friends of the victims in an effort to trace the steps that led them to that beach".

Continued - Page 2 of above article: "by Oxnard police. After the bodies were moved police found a 9 inch bone-handled fish knife in the sand. Santa Barbara authorities said the knife, possibly the murder weapon, had a 4 inch blade. Hood was stabbed 11 times in the face and back. The girl had multiple stab wounds, and authorities said she was not sexually molested.
Both bodies were discovered face-down, apparently left that way to give the appearance that the victims were sleeping, authorities said.

The Hood family drove to Santa Barbara last night to be with Sandra's parents, Mr and Mrs Cruz Garcia, 3088 Calle Pinon, who were reported under heavy sedation. The families said "they had no idea" as to what happened at the beach. There were no difficulties and neither of the victims had any enemies as far as the families knew. Police said their investigation would continue.

The eldest of six children, Hood was born in Seattle. He came to California with his family in 1950. He attended El Rio Elementary School and graduated from Camarillo High School in June, 1965. After graduation, he worked at Wimpy's Drive-In in Oxnard and then joined the Army in January 1966. He spent two years in Germany with the 64th Armored Division after boot training in Ft. Bliss, Texas, and then returned home for leave before being sent to Vietnam. While on leave, Hood met Sandra while they were both vacationing in Tijuana, Mexico. An expert marksman, Hood was sent to Vietnam on January 6, 1969 with the 64th Armored Division. Hood was closed-mouthed about the combat-filled year he spent there and about the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and other medals he had received for valor. After returning to Oxnard, he went back to work for the drive-in eatery. Although Hood and Sandra were planning to be married, they had not set a wedding date.

Besides his parents, Hood is survived by his sisters, Mrs Linda Jean Ortiz, 19, Lauretta Ann Hood, 16, and Virginia Sue, 13; and two brothers Jerry Allen, 18, and Joseph William, 10. The elder Hood is employed with the Associated Concrete Co, Saticoy, and Mrs Hood drives a small school bus. Hood's fiancee had been an employee of the State Motor Vehicle Department in Santa Barbara. Her father is the owner of the Garcia Auto Wrecking Co, Besides her parents, she is survived by three brothers".

February 24th 1970: "Police Hunt Pair In Twin Murders Santa Barbara. Detectives today were combing their city for two young men wanted for questioning in the vicious knife-slaying of an Oxnard Vietnam war veteran and his pretty Santa Barbara fiancee. Detectives said the pair, both in their early 20s, were seen “washing cut wounds” at an east beach area service station near where the bodies of the couple, John Franklin Hood, 23, of 460 Helsam Ave, and Sandra Garcia, 20, of 3088 Calle Pinon, Santa Barbara, were found. Witnesses told detectives the two men walked into the station about I a.m. with cut wounds they said they had received as the result of a fight in the east beach area. Detectives said one of the men had a vertical cut across the center of his forehead, extending from his hairline to an eyebrow. The other man had a wound on the back of his right hand. They were seen driving an early 1950 vintage light blue sedan with primer spots on the right side and trunk deck. Pathological tests revealed Hood and Miss Garcia were killed sometime between IO p.m. Saturday and 2 a.m. Sunday. The tests were conducted by Dr. John P. Blanchard, pathologist there".

Early details of crimes are usually withheld, though it later became apparent that the killer had murdered the young couple with a 4-inch bone-handled knife, partially buried in the sand underneath their blanket. Why the killer failed to take the knife with him can only be speculated upon. Whether this was the Zodiac Killer venturing south to commit this double murder may never be known, but bearing in mind the murders were in the correct Zodiac timeline the only reasonable approach with such limited information available is to examine his following correspondence - the April 20th '13 Symbol' cipher.

This correspondence and cipher has been analyzed with a view to the code giving us a name. However, the introduction of "This is the Zodiac speaking. By the way have you cracked the last cipher I sent you. My name is ------," leaves us with the possibility we are not looking for a name within the code, but were in fact supposed to fill in the blank. Later in the communication he states "I have killed ten people to date" and "I hope you have fun trying to figgure out who I killed", Was this a subtle clue - that we were supposed to be figuring out a date in order to unlock who his ninth and tenth victims were. By the sheer law of averages of his known victims, he attacked a couple 75% of the time. He also never claimed a ninth victim independently between December 20th 1969 and April 20th 1970.

The Zodiac Killer used symbols in his ciphers, so we will strip the 13 Symbol cipher back to basics in an attempt to uncover his intentions. He gave us three Taurus symbols and an Aries symbol reversed. He also gave us three circles. The 13 Symbol  cipher was mailed on April 20th, which is the exact date the star sign switches from Aries to Taurus. The blank or white circle is the symbol for a full moon. See 1970 calendar. The astrological signs and full moon symbol are both relevant to the calendar. The Zodiac Killer has placed the Taurus symbols within the circles - so by simple wordplay we have 'full moon in Taurus'. The only 1970 full moon in Taurus is April 21st. If we are trying to figure out who he killed,  the figure 21 isn't a bad place to start. The next thing to tackle is the reasoning behind the Zodiac Killer giving us three full moon symbols. Because he is challenging us to discover who he killed, it isn't unreasonable to assume the three full moons play a significant part in this game. The 13 Symbol cipher gave us the first full moon, so we will look back at the last two Zodiac events.

PictureKathleen Johns
One month prior, Kathleen Johns, accompanied by her 10-month-old daughter Jennifer, were traveling along Highway 132, west of Modesto, en route to Petaluma, California, when her routine journey turned upside down. She was to make the near fatal mistake of stopping on a deserted highway at approximately 11:15 pm at night, ushered to the side of the road by a passing motorist who was flashing his headlights and gesturing towards her 1957 Chevrolet. Believing he was indicating a fault with her vehicle, Kathleen Johns drew over to the side of the road. The man explained that her wheel appeared loose, offering to tighten it up for her, and she duly obliged.

This innocent error was to begin a chain of events that are still not fully understood to this day, and have initiated countless years of debate on whether the man who approached Kathleen Johns car that fateful night was actually the Zodiac Killer, and the 'proposed madman' responsible for unleashing terror in the Bay Area of Northern California, and bringing the 'Summer of Love' into the summer of fear just two short years later.

Kathleen Johns was abducted in the last hour before before midnight on March 22nd 1970 and escaped at approximately 1:50 to 2:00 am on March 23rd 1970. The date of March 22nd would become our second full moon. The third, with the figure 21 in mind, must be the date that Zodiac was asking us to "figure out". Therefore, we will travel back to the previous full moon. John Franklin Hood and Sandra Garcia were murdered on February 21st 1970, to give us our third full moon as depicted in the 13 Symbol cipher.

Interesting connections Richard. I'm curious about the exact spot of the 1963 Santa Barbara double murder in relation to Hood-Garcia. Unsure exactly where along the beach each occurred, but surely their close proximity lends credence to the idea they may have been perpetrated the same individual. I don't know much of the details of this 1970 incident but it's worth noting Hood was a young, decorated Army sergeant who served in Vietnam, most likely he had training in self defense. Yet still somehow he was overpowered by an attacker using only a small knife. Were they held up at gunpoint and then tied like the victims at Lake Berryessa? Was there more than one culprit? Obviously we don't readily know these answers.

I recently saw a documentary about another series of beach murders in San Diego, in an area called Torrey Pines. They took place in 1978 and 1984, respectively. Very curious case--eventually DNA implicated a detective, however there were doubts because investigators would often use their own genetic samples to facilitate DNA testing before the technology advanced.
The detective became the center of so much scrutiny and suspicion he ultimately took his life. The two murders still remain unsolved.

Yes, I read up thoroughly on that San Diego case- very interesting.
Good point; it would I imagine have been very difficult to overpower two people with a fish knife, unless he attacked John first, catching them by surprise. The gun proposition not dissimilar to Lake Berryessa is perfectly feasible. The assailant in the Domingos/Edwards murders attempted to bind them, but apparently they fought back, resulting in the assailant resorting to his gun. This may have transpired at Berryessa had Hartnell fought back-we will never know. This may have also been the outcome had John Hood been approached with bindings, but refused.
The distance between the Hood/Garcia and Domingos/Edwards murders was 34 miles. East Cabrillo Boulevard is east of Canada Del Molino.

Perhaps the 13 symbols are representative of this calendar
so-many of the murders were on a Dali day or in the am. of
which technically yes is of the next day.

That's correct Blue, I delved into the 13 moon calendar in several articles, including Dali. Whether or not the whole back story of this calendar has any bearing is open to debate, however, a calendar year split into 13 months of 28 days, does place many murders on the first day of each week.

I personally have no doubt that the Zodiac killed more people and began killing a long time before he was ever known by that name. It is likely that an astrological connection could become more apparent, if only we knew the exact number of his victims.
I have long held a suspicion - call it a vague hunch - that the Zodiac may have morphed into the Original Night Stalker, or perhaps were known to one another and thus bounced the responsibility for murders off one another. I do of course mean the Original Night Stalker, who was never brought to justice, not the later "copycat" Richard Ramirez. I also wonder about George Hodel at times, who may have been killing since at least 1944 and continued right through the next 4 decades. At least DNA evidence has confirmed that a large amount of decomposed human DNA from many different individuals has been found at an alleged "burial site", which Hodel's son had brought to the attention of the authorities. The story does seem to have some legitimacy, but given the amount of time that has elapsed, I doubt if much closure will ever be provided to the possible victims and their families.

Richard
1/19/2018 02:02:12 am

I've generally stuck to 'Zodiac committed only four attacks', but am constantly attempting to 'verify' any further attacks with the limited information we have. There are no police reports available for public consumption in many of the cases, so in this case, had he murdered Hood and Garcia, the only reasonable way to present a case linking Zodiac to these murders is to use his communications. I have attempted that in this case, using a form of statistical analysis. In other words, what are the chances of three full moon occurrences in three events, combined with the three symbols on the April 20th cipher. I suppose it's attempting to convert coincidence into correlation beyond a doubt. I certainly haven't proved the case linking this crime to Zodiac, but barring his lack of contact after Berryessa, if he were to reference a crime, it would be the immediate communication after the crime.
He may well have morphed into a different character and left his old persona behind. I certainly don't believe in sticking with rigid MO's, such as anything sexual couldn't have been Zodiac. People change and develop, and everybody is unique. There certainly isn't a universal rule that governs the randomness of psychosis. If the Zodiac Killer didn't die in the 1970's, then as we see in many cold cases, the killer is often incarcerated for other crimes-this may have been the fate of Zodiac. Every time you roll the dice, the chances are one day your luck will evaporate, and Zodiac certainly rode his luck, defying the tag of genius.
The Golden State Killer is an unbelievable case, of 'how on earth can a killer commit so many rapes and murders without being caught.' The routine DNA testing of every criminal, no matter how small the crime, may in large part result in many unnecessary deaths. They have a full DNA profile of the killer, so assuming the partial DNA in the Zodiac case is his, then he should be able to be ruled out of being the Golden State Killer.

Richard
1/19/2018 02:45:06 am

I would like to see everybody's DNA taken from birth. Had this been the case, literally 49 women wouldn't have been raped and 12 people would still be alive. Even taking that the rapist would be released at some point, countless people would have been spared. I'm all for the rights of not having the government invade every corner of our life, but people have the right not to become victims of depraved individuals. Many worry their DNA samples could be replicated and misused, or planted, but once the DNA has created the 'bar code', this should be stored and the sample destroyed. The chances of misuse still exist, but this is a fact of life in every corner. The only people that should fear such a universal screening would be criminals, and despite some reservations, I believe more good than bad can come of it. We don't ban alcohol because some idiots get violent while using it. We shouldn't fall to the lowest common denominator. To me, the Original Night Stalker is case in point, where 61 individuals and their associated family members, likely in the hundreds, have had their lives ruined because of public sensibilities. Many will disagree with me, but I feel we need to protect the largely law-abiding citizens of society.

Richard
1/19/2018 02:50:24 am

I know DNA testing wasn't around when the ONS started his reign of terror, but the argument is still relevant today for the birth of any future serial offender.

Greg

"He may well have morphed into a different character and left his old persona behind. I certainly don't believe in sticking with rigid MO's, such as anything sexual couldn't have been Zodiac. People change and develop, and everybody is unique."

Tend to agree with you here Richard, but it makes me think of comments made by criminal profiler Sharon Pagaling Hagan in the 2007 documentary about Arthur Leigh Allen. She said Zodiac showed "no sadistic tendencies," his crimes were very swift and he did not revel in seeing the pain experienced by his victims. For the four confirmed Zodiac attacks her remarks certainly feel accurate, though one can probably argue Lake Berryessa was somewhat sadistic in its nature.
It appears, however, that Hood and Garcia may have been targeted more violently and maliciously than Hartnell and Shepard as the former had no opportunity to be rescued and escape with their lives, they were likely deceased when their assailant left the scene.
It certainly makes for an interesting exercise, though, to look at other murderers and review the extent to which their behavior and M.O. morphs, or not, as they committ additional crimes. Someone like Son of Sam was consistent in how he went about it, but by contrast a killer such as BTK displayed a degree of variation--albeit he'd sometimes go many years between crimes.
I guess the question is whether the Bay Area Zodiac we know who is responsible for 4 canonical attacks also have murdered Domingos-Edwards, an assault with a more overt sexual component to it, as well as Hood-Garcia, one apparently more relentless and vicious than the capacity he showed at Lake Berryessa.
Zodiac, I believe, for all his sinister ways, was not Jeffrey Dahmer, he was not Richard Chase. He never crossed that line into unhinged lunacy. Despite his proclamations otherwise in the Belli letter, he remained in control of himself. Perhaps it's the result of my own overexposure and desensitization to the case, but Zodiac is a tale you can actually talk about in polite company without people looking at you sideways. Conversely, if one was to bring up Dahmer, Chase, and the plethora of others who acted from purely macabre and sadistic tendencies, I'm sure we'd summarily be asked to leave the room.

Some fascinating and ''sensible'' comments.

I agree with Greg that there was something very ''purposeful'' about Zodiac's murder's...as if a ''vehicle'' for a greater ''angst''.

I believe that there was ''before Bay Area'',and ''after Bay Area'' period,as well as his most documented ''pursuits''.

In the beginning,it was about ''discovery'' while trying to overcome periods of ''worthlessness''.But,this gave him ''the knack'' of killing, and ''Bay Area'' came about, through his already acquired ''skills'',and the coincidence of circumstances,in his life,at the time.

By 1968,Zodiac had already ''crossed the line'',as experienced investigators of serial killers, call it.

Most of my spare time,in the last ten years, has been examining ''Zodiac'',after Bay Area.Though,at the start,I did not realise that this man was the Zodiac.

I have him down for four murders, between 1978 and 1981,when his private life ''came off the rails'' for a brief time. Then a final murder, much later....as a sort of ''swan song''...the ''black dog'' re-visiting him, perhaps.

Before ''Bay Area'' is difficult to assess. But I am persuaded that Zodiac was responsible for the Domingos-Edwards murders. This was anger at perceived trespassing on his makeshift beach home.

So,although Zodiac appears to have shown ''purposefulness'' and a certain self control, there were times when the ''boiling anger'' would emerge.

As,in the case of Darlene Ferrin's murder, and I find it ''close to astonishing'' that that murder didn't seal Zodiac's fate,as an active serial killer.

Hi Richard, I hope you are still mulling over ideas about doing a Zodiac podcast. You mentioned that you were self-conscious about your accent but I am certain no one in your audience would be dissuaded by it - personally, I have understood everything you've said in all of the audio bits you have offered so far. Covering underreported elements like the Hood/Garcia case or the teenager sleeping bag murders would be very beneficial to the Zodiac conversation. Certainly no one else is going to go this deep into the case.

Man you are going to hate this idea!

I noticed that Thomas Horan has started a podcast. I think it would be valuable to hear the two of you to discuss the case in an interview. Now, don't make that face, I think it would be good! I know that you two don't see the case at all the same but I believe you are both patient and well-versed enough to have a constructive conversation without resorting to mudslinging.

The problem with previous attempts to get Horan to confront the fragility of his theory is that everyone gets so fatigued by his extreme detail. He'll attach a name or report to a complex narrative spin and if the person he's talking to can't keep it all straight they sink into the swamp of his interpretation and the defenceless audience is left in the dark. Horan knows the players and reports so intimately that those offering counter arguments tend to get overheated, miss the opportunity to call him out on his often outrageous presumptions, and fail to force him to confront the real issues he rallies against. Perhaps it is not worth your time but it would just be so satisfying for me to A) hear Horan finally listen to reason or B) hear Horan talk to someone who knows enough about the case to appreciate his contentious point of view. Richard, you may be are our only hope!

I promise Drew I will do more podcasts, it's just trying to find something that hasn't been rehashed a thousand times. It's very difficult to stay fresh in the Zodiac case, without treading over the same old ground.
I have listened to Thomas Horan's podcasts recently. Thomas without doubt is a highly intelligent individual, who knows the details of the Zodiac case extremely well, and in fairness to him, is perfectly entitled to his views as we all are. I don't agree with much of the stuff he says, implicating or in part suggesting a conspiracy of Robert Graysmith, Keith Power, Hal Snook and Dennis Land, to name just a few, in this ever evolving theory of a conspiratorial Zodiac hoax. The suggestion is, that we have to debunk his theory, and if we cannot, it therefore somehow lends credence to it. I haven't seen one shred of evidence tying any of these players into a grand conspiracy, and adding irritating sound bites between his narration doesn't achieve anything, other than give the impression he is trying to sell a story and patronize the listener. I somehow doubt Thomas will ever be convinced of anything but a hoax, no matter what reasoning is thrown at him, and of course, if he believes his ideas to be true, that is his right as an individual. When Mike Morford boxed him into an awkward position in one debate, he simply revised his theory and evolved, rather than simply say, I'm wrong. Robert Graysmith and other researchers have done this when their suspects were ruled out with DNA. They went on to create revisionist theories of multiple Zodiac's, one writer-one murderer solutions, somebody else licked the stamps and the DNA was degraded or contaminated. Had the DNA not ruled out their suspects, we know their trumpets would have come out in salute of their ever strengthening case. They cannot lose, but certainly will never chuck away years of 'research' and admit they are wrong, and my guess is neither will Thomas.
I remember visiting Thomas Horan's Youtube video about Lake Herman Road, which is factually incorrect. He stated the bullet that struck the window was fired from the passenger side of the assailants vehicle, which was 10 feet to the right of the Rambler. He then stated we can trace this bullet back to identify where it was fired from. This last part is true, but to create a trajectory angle of 17-19 degrees to the horizontal, this bullet would had to have been fired from a man in excess of 20 feet in height. The shooter's gun would be at least 15-16 feet from the window (10 feet + width of other car). The true distance this bullet was fired from is about 2 feet, with an assailant about 4 feet away. This can be calculated using trigonometry. I pointed this out to Thomas, and he explained it away by saying the bullet likely deflected off the edge of the Rambler, skirting the window. The photographs clearly show glass intact between the bullet hole and frame, and no damage to the edge of the Rambler. Additionally, he had already stated that we can use the angle to trace back to the shooter, but if he is now claiming it was deflected, he has now negated his own argument and reasoning. And thirdly, a bullet would unlikely deflect downwards. In other words, he is using revisionist tactics that negate his original argument, rather than just accept he is wrong, something I doubt he ever does. If somebody states something I have written to be proved incorrect, then I will say, yes I am wrong- there is no shame in admitting a mistake. We all make them.
I respect Thomas Horan's right to his beliefs, but I believe debating them would be a futile exercise. It's a bit like debating creationism or the Flat Earth society, something that is patently not worth debating. Debating these topics somehow gives the impression they are worth debating, and the hoax theory has not one shred of evidence to support it, just wild supposition.

I am so glad to hear you're still thinking about more podcasts, no matter what you choose to focus on. I was really inspired for about an hour last night about you and Thomas sussing things out on air and today I really don't know why I thought that would work! Without mentioning your name I left him a comment under his video suggesting he should consider talking to experts on his show or their show and he basically replied that there are no experts that would dare to challenge him. It's too bad the attitude some people have to these subjects. For me zodiac is a mystery that obviously none of us have solved so arrogance really shouldn't enter into it.

It's too bad about the flawed LHR analysis - I like the idea of visualizing the crime scenes and it would have been a lot of work. At any rate, the real goods you have to work with I believe are your interpretations of the evidence we do have from the canonical crimes and letters in relation to the prominent theories about the Zodiac we have all wrestled with. What evidence supports this and that theory... Everyone has considered the military angle, the policeman angle, the team theory, etc.

One theoretical terrain I keep returning to is the idea of applying geographical profiling techniques to find the residential area of a killer who writes to the media. You've written some interesting stuff growing out from the Kim Rossmo study. On one hand the 'least amount of effort' data suggests he may have been in the American Canyon area and on the other hand we are dealing with someone who put a lot of effort and forethought into how his crimes and correspondences would be analyzed. Did he work in SF but live ten minutes from Vallejo? Could it have been the other way around? Is it worth considering that he may have driven upwards of an hour away from his Zodiac zone? These are some of the things I think you would be great at tackling.

Thanks for your time Richard!

Mr.Horan has created a ''Zodiac atheist'' church for himself.

One or two ''Zodiac believers'' may have taken an interest,at first,to examine the architecture of his creation.

But,after the initial fuss and novelty of his preaching, the ''Zodiac believers'' have returned to their church, and Mr.Horan is left with no congregation.

When the Zodiac case is finally solved, beyond any judicial doubt, people will cross the road to avoid Mr.Horan......and only acknowledge his presence,to remark :

''There's that prat.''.

A secular religion created by Auguste Comte developed the religion of humanity for positivist societies in order to fulfill the cohesive function once held by traditional worship. The religion was developed after Comte's passionate platonic relationship with Clotilde de Vaux, whom he idealized after her death. He became convinced that feminine values embodied the triumph of sentiment and morality. In a future science-based Positivist society there should also be a religion that would have power by virtue of moral force alone. In 1849, he proposed a calendar reform called the "positivist calendar", in which months were named after history's greatest leaders, thinkers, and artists, and arranged in chronological order. Each day was dedicated to a thinker. This seems to be where José Argüelles took his 13 month Calendar Idea from in 1992.

Thanks Drew

Everybody was hung up on the new age 13 moon calendar because every time you did a search for 13 month or moon calendar the powers that be routed it to this nutty 1992 calendar... so we would not get the instant Zodiac connection?
