DAY-BY-DAY FORECAST FOR CANCER

8/22/2019

PictureClick to enlarge
Two pasted communications were mailed in close proximity to one another (or possibly in unison), postmarked December 10th and December 11th 1969. The first was the Day-by-day forecast for Cancer, and the second was the Day-by-day forecast for Leo, mailed from Sacramento to the Sacramento Bee newspaper and from San Francisco to the San Francisco Newspaper Printing Company, P.O. Box 3100, Rincon Annex, San Francisco respectively.

When trying to understand these communications, we have to consider why the author (or Zodiac) didn't just opt to paste the words on a postcard or greeting card in similar fashion to the '13 Hole' Postcard or Pines Card. In this instance he chose an astrology backdrop with dates for both communications, suggestive that the numerical dates were the key ingredient for the message to be understood. In a recent article we investigated the possibility that the
Day-by-day forecast for Leo was in reference to the abduction and murder of Leona Roberts, hence why it was mailed at about the same time as her abduction on December 10th 1969. The same goes for the Day-by-day forecast for Cancer communication which I have added below.

Picture
Picture
Rubislaw32, a contributor to this site, was correct when he stated that the pasted section FLT 555 on the Cancer communication was taken from State Express 555 Filter cigarettes, When you consider the title of the communication Day-by-day forecast for Cancer and realize that the font used on the State Express cigarette packets is identical to the pasted triple 5 below, along with FLT being an acronym for filter, then it leaves little doubt as to the origins of this phrase. The bigger question is, why did the designer of the pasted communication place it originating from the position of November 9th, and what new purpose had he adopted the acronym for, if any? As stated in the previous article, we are dealing with an abduction and murder in December, so it is the numerical values that we likely have to focus on.

If you take a quick peek at the Leo communication, you will notice that the pasted wording FLT Three of a Kind (meaning 555) also begins at the 9th of the month. Two phrases, FLT Three of a Kind and FLT 555, both beginning on the 9th. Is that really just accidental? This was the numerical day before the abduction of Leona Roberts. The connection is speculative at best, but we have to consider that the FLT (the common strand between both communications) having been placed next to this date twice, has some relevance to the 9th - and quite possibly the impending abduction date of Leona Roberts. Find, Locate and Target, or Find Leona at Tormey, akin to the acronym of BTK used by Dennis Rader several years later, is one possibility for this pasted section. However, there are multiple possibilities pertaining to the motivation and meaning of the communication's designer.

Another link to the State Express 555 cigarette company (albeit questionable) is where the designer of the Leo communication places the word Train - in the same section of dates as FLT Three of a Kind (see here). Obviously, Express and Train can be linked through the railways, but here is an extract from Wikipedia: "The idea for the State Express brand came from the U.S.in 1893. Sir Albert Levy, a London tobacco merchant, was visiting the United States. While in New York State, Levy was a passenger on the Empire State Express train, which allegedly broke land speed records as locomotive No.999, the “Queen of Speed” sped its way from New York City to Buffalo".

Picture
In this communication we have Action Guide, Want, Watch and Birds Fly South all touching the date of November 18th. This date featured in the previous article with respect to the release date of the 1969 film 'Run a Crooked Mile', which was pasted beginning on November 18th 1969. I will merge the two communications together using three of the pasted sections and state that "I will consult my action guide, because I want to watch the film Run a Crooked Mile". Of course, I have no idea if this was the intention of the designer of both communications, which is why your input is invaluable in making some sense of these seemingly senseless pastings. One would reasonably expect them to have some purpose - particularly with regard to the dates and the phrases attached alongside them.

One of the most prominent features on this communication is the pseudonym Zodiac, placed beginning on the date of the 20th. The next confirmed communication from the Zodiac Killer was the Melvin Belli Letter mailed on December 20th 1969. The connection to Leona Roberts was speculated upon in the last article:
"On December 20th 1969, the Zodiac Killer mailed the Melvin Belli Letter, mimicking the words written in lipstick (supposedly by William Heirens) on the apartment wall of murder victim Frances Brown. She was discovered shot and stabbed multiple times in her 3941 North Pine Grove apartment in Edgewater, Chicago. The date of Frances Brown's murder was December 10th - the exact date that Leona Roberts was abducted from 749 Tormey Ave in Rodeo".
Picture
In the Leo communication the designer has placed a cross inside a circle on the dates of the 3rd, 4th and 5th. In this communication he has pasted Magic Amulet continuing onwards through the 6th, 7th and 8th. The only relevant Christian amulet I could find that looked similar to the design on the Leo communication "is the well-known amulet among Catholic Christians, that of the Saint Benedict medal which includes the Vade Retro Satana formula to ward off Satan. This medal has been in use at least since the 1700s, and in 1742 it received the approval of Pope Benedict XIV. It later became part of the Roman Catholic ritual". Wikipedia. If this was the intended symbol placed on the Leo communication, I have no idea why, other than a vague resemblance to the crosshairs of Zodiac, or the design on the December 16th 1969 Faifield Letter and October 27th 1970 Halloween Card.

All of the above are simple word association games involving numerical values, that may have no resemblance to the meaning of both the Day-by-day forecast for Cancer and Day-by-day forecast for Leo, but the possibility of a connection between the dates and words is a tangible one.

Thanks for the mention,Richard,in relation to ''555'' cigarettes.

Yes....the inference,at least,is that the [presumed] Zodiac was a smoker of this brand of cigarette. Also, that he was a regular flyer, with civilian aircraft,at that time...quite a bit rarer,in those days, than now, when almost everyone has ''flown''.

Not least, that ''555'' was traditionally seen,as a British cigarette, and mostly only available at outlets, like Airports.

''555'',known commercially,as ''the traveller's cigarette'',was originally owned by the British company,''Wills''.In Britain, itself,it was ''falsely'' touted as an American cigarette, with the ''State Express'' slant, actually the name of a well known American locomotive train.

But,by 1969,the brand had bought by the Anglo-American company, called ''British American Tobacco''.

''British American Tobacco'' owned ''Lucky Strike'' and ''Pall Mall'' cigarettes, also.I believe that the Zodiac smoked ''555' when he could acquire them, through air travel....and smoked ''Lucky Strike'',at other times.I believe also, that the Zodiac smoked ''Pall Mall'',when he was ''predatory loitering'',at both LHR and Lake Berryessa....just to ''tip a suspicion'' LE's way, that William Grant might have been involved.

Grant was a well known chain smoker,in the Vallejo area....and always smoked ''Pall Mall''.Many could vouch for this, including off-duty cops, that would join him,in the illegal gaming joints,in Vallejo.

Thanks also, for the ''Cancer'' card display.I will be re-examining,with a view on ''strategy'',to find the publication source, for both ''Cancer'' and ''Leo'' cards.

I certainly believe that they are by the hand of the Zodiac.

Richard

Cheers for the background information Rubislaw. I believe that suspect spotted by the three women at Berryessa was a smoker. The State Express 555 is the one sure thing about both communications, so the designer was certainly dropping a hint of sorts. The main reason for believing that Forecast for Leo card was Leona Roberts is the obvious connection in the wording and the mailing date, which was probably the day before on the 10th. I don't like coincidences, but I certainly accept there needs to be another solid link in either communication to push it over the line.

I know you favour Elaine Davis, but we can both agree that the pertinent thing to remember is the word "forecast", highly suggestive of somebody abducted by not killed immediately. Leona Roberts was certainly kept alive for at least a week or two depending on which report you read, and the time of Elaine Davis' murder cannot be pinpointed, so the same may be applicable. I know people say that kidnapping and keeping victims alive was not Zodiac's style, but neither was the Berryessa attack until he did it. Equally, the murder of Paul Stine would not have been believed to be Zodiac, had he not mailed the shirt. The same could be said of Kathleen Johns and Donna Lass. We don't know whether he is responsible for these outlier attacks, but I certainly don't rule them out based on nothing more "than they were different".

It had never really occurred to me before, that there is a sort of ''warped poetry'' about the Zodiac ''possibly'' smoking ''Lucky Strike'',also [?].

Of course ''555'' also represented the address of ''The Bank of America'' building,in San Fransisco. At the time, the tallest building in Northern California.

[....and,coincidentally,at one time,owned by Donald Trump,since..]

Rubislaw 32 link

Indeed...and certainly to think about. The attacks we know about represent quick deaths,to those who did not survive....apart from Cecilla Shepard....but that might have been more about the Zodiac, saving his last gun [?].

Yes...this possible ''eighth'' victim, will remain a mystery, until he is brought to justice,if still alive.

The order of the Zodiac astrological signs are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Each sector is named for a constellation it passes through. The Zodiac (or not) used Cancer and Leo here, and the April 20th letter possibly had Taurus and Aries. Four out of the first 5. Where is Gemini? Do not require a reply, just pondering.

Rubislaw 32 link

I think you could be on to something,Richard.

The Astrological signs, perhaps,do need further examination [?].

I hadn't realized,for example,that Cancer and Leo,run concurrently.

Cancer : June 22nd - July 22nd

Leo : July 23 - August 22nd

And,that's just to start with...plus,where is Gemini,as you refer [?].

Back to space missions....possibly [?].

Don't forget that FLT also stands for flight. "Birds fly south," so do people. While I know there was a Northwest Orient FLT 152 out of San Fran to Minneapolis/St. Paul and Western FLT 581 was a morning nonstop to Honolulu, I don't know if there were any actual FLT 555. Just a suggestion. It is interesting that one 5 is larger than the other two, as in 5:55. Or $5.55 for that matter.

Shawn
8/22/2019 07:47:04 pm

To me, FLT 555 sound like Flight 555. Then there is "Fly South".

Unrelated. D.B. Cooper hijacked Flight 305 from Portland to Tacoma on Nov. 24, 1971. He later jumped from the plane (headed south) after the plane took off from Tacoma headed to Reno.

I notice the name Zodiac ends at November 24th.

There were some paste up letters (most likely hoaxes) claiming to be D.B. Cooper mailed to various newspapers.

From what I have read, the FBI 's first inclnation was, that FLT 555,stood for a civil aircraft flight.

They came up with nothing.

Bolinas Lagoon is a major winter migration destination, where birds flying south from Alaska and northern Canada reside during the rainy season. More than 100 species of birds and a colony of some 200 seals use the lagoon. The avian culture is so rich in the area that Audubon Canyon Ranch, a world-famous bird observatory, is next to the lagoon.

The most common pattern is that birds migrate to the temperate or arctic Northern Hemisphere to breed in the summer and migrate south to warmer regions for the winter. There are four main flyways, or migration routes, in North America that most birds follow between their summer and winter locations.

I don't just say it. all the Bolinas Lagoon websites do as well.

Richard

North American Bird Migration: The 4 Flyways

The Atlantic Flyway. The Atlantic Flyway follows the eastern coast of the US from the Bahamas to the tip of Maine, with major migration routes intersecting in Southern South Carolina and the Delaware Bay.
The Mississippi Flyway. ...
The Central Flyway. ...
The Pacific Flyway.

Bolinas Lagoon is a tidal estuary, approximately 1,100 acres in area, located in the West Marin region of Marin County, California, United States, adjacent to the town of Bolinas. The Pacific Flyway is a major north-south flyway for migratory birds in America, extending from Alaska to Patagonia. Every year, migratory birds travel some or all of this distance both in spring and in fall, following food sources, heading to breeding grounds, or travelling to overwintering sites. Along the Pacific Flyway, there are many key rest stops where birds of many species gather, sometimes in the millions, to feed and regain their strength before continuing. Some species may remain in these rest stops for the entire season, but most stay a few days before moving on.

Richard
8/23/2019 03:23:13 am

So the question to be asked is what is the nearest one of the 4 bird migration routes in North America where "birds fly south", with respect to 749 Tormey Ave in Rodeo. The answer: Bolinas Lagoon, where her body was ultimately discovered.

Richard
8/23/2019 03:40:19 am

The old saying is birds fly south in the winter.
The winter or December solstice in 1969 was the 22nd December. "Birds fly South" is pasted over the 19th, 20th. 21st, 22nd and 23rd of the month. "Fly South" over the 22nd.

Personally,I am a supporter of the notion that the Zodiac became D B Cooper,as an extortionist,through correspondence,Shawn.

But,D B Cooper's highjacking wasn't until November 24th 1971,with his correspondences starting shortly after this date.

So,the ''Day-by-Day'' forecasts were two years,before the deeds of D B Cooper.

Rubislaw 32 link

''Fly South'',Richard....yes indeed,as far as I can see apparent ''reminders'' of his literal or figurative ''migration'',time and time again.

And,more specifically,to the vicinity of Los Angeles.

Surely, the Zodiac's ''other'' home....and suggests further that the Zodiac, was in the vicinity of Vallejo....for the purposes of work.

Richard
8/24/2019 04:16:31 am

The Zodiac seemingly had some connection to LA if we believe the Los Angeles letter, where he clearly noted that "They don't bury me on the back pages like some of the others". To know this, he obviously must have kept abreast of this newspaper.

Rubislaw 32 link
8/22/2019 08:45:32 pm

At the moment,Richard,I'm looking at the two ''Day-by-Day'' forecasts, from a ''mundane'' perspective.

They seem to represent a short period of the Zodiac being ''reflective''.

Perhaps of a change in his life....a period of transition.

So,Cancer and Leo,together,represent :

June 22nd - August 22nd.

Naturally, the first thing that comes to mind is,that it is within this period, that he declared himself,as ''The Zodiac''.He actually branded himself, and successfully put across a message that he existed,to terrorize the establishment and the public,as one.

Blue Rock Springs - July 4th

Concerned Citizen - August 10th

June 22nd - 12 Days - July 4th - Aug 10th - 12 Days - Aug 22nd

Rubislaw 32 link
8/23/2019 07:20:27 am

....and as can be observed, what takes place, slap in the middle,of that 1969,'' Cancer and Leo '',as well as the Zodiac's ''first wave'' of introduced terror ?

No less than the century's most significant science related event....''The Eagle'' went and landed on the Moon,July 20th 1969.

Whatever didn't run as smoothly,as the Zodiac might have hoped for, with the 408's publication humiliation,of note....the Zodiac may well have looked back, with a certain satisfaction....having re-claimed the ''upper-hand'',with success at Lake Berryessa and Presidio Heights,on his return from a summer break.

JD
8/22/2019 10:27:07 pm

Also intriguing is your note on the placement of "train" in relation to the dates corresponding with FLT Three of a Kind. A different kind of "train" other than the choo-choo is when you are training someone. Ads for training PBX receptionists almost always listed the words "will train" along with mentioning the "555 board," but unless a victim, or the Zodiac, was a receptionist or telephone switchboard operator, or applied for such training, this seems a highly unlikely observation on my part. 555 was also the code in San Francisco for listing available flats for rent. Just throwing those two observations out there, no matter how far off they may be.

There seems to be so many avenues to approach, but equally as many rabbit holes to go down. Trying to understand many of these clues is like seeing the "FK" in the Pace card. In the mid to late 60's and early 70's they ran "Tiny Turtle's Mystery Message" in the newspapers, and it is the one place where fk was used in a cipher to form a two-letter word. The cipher messages changed with each new publication, but the key always remained the same, so fk was always the word "up." I don't believe there is any connection, as I doubt that the Zodiac even knew about "Tiny Turtle's Message" ciphers, but rather it is the most ironic coincidence that "Tiny Turtle's" decoded fk is the word "up," and Zodiac's fk is in the up-side down portion of the Pace card. Just as with the pace card, the probability of coming across such coincidences is probably very high with all of the other communications. That's just another observation of mine.

JD
8/24/2019 03:02:39 am

As with my previous post, I tend to wonder how specific the Zodiac (or whoever made them up) was trying to be with the pasted items, whether the association between them was tight, or if they were vague, loosely connected words. Was he referring to a "Flight 555," or was it just FLT for flight and 555 meaning something else?

Words like "Birds Fly South" and "Flight,"...in 1969 a Cessna Cardinal could be immediately delivered as advertised on a "special 5-5-5 plan." That's a bird that could be flown south, and identified by 555. A certain Cardinals team flew south to Florida, returning on United Airlines Flight 631 with an arrival time of 5:55pm. I only mention this as an example, not to be taken as a serious suggestion.

In San Francisco, flight and ground school specials ran for $555.00, if he was interested in flying, or taught at such a school. There's Chapter 555 Order of the Eastern Star and El Toro Marine Air Station, American Legion Post 555... In relation to the Pace card, ads under employment for: "Keypunch...to $555."

Elsewhere, was he taunting, saying "If you want Zodiac, watch for a flight...," or could he have been sly and saying something completely separate from everything else, as in "Want Zodiac watch"
(wristwatch). In December 1969 there were ads placed in Lost and Found for lost Zodiac watches. Could he have placed a fictitious ad right under everyone's noses, with his real phone number?

Probably all meaningless ideas, but ideas just the same.

Richard
8/24/2019 04:00:44 am

Considering the speculation of the origin of Zodiac's pseudonym, "Want Zodiac watch" not only reads coherently but could be a sarcastic hint to these musings. Although the font of 555 is derived from the cigarette packets as Rubislaw discovered, that certainly doesn't imply the message is related to State Express cigarettes, with the idea of a plane or travel connotation certainly a possibility. The watch reference with your "arrival time of 5:55pm" also meshes well. The spoken words being five fifty-five. No ideas are meaningless if they trigger further ideas from the reader - and eventually generate an idea that sounds compelling. A watch, five fifty-five and birds fly south are all "time" related.

Rubislaw 32 link
8/24/2019 04:02:02 am

I think it's always worth throwing a few ideas in the air,JD,and you have made a good stab of it.Particulary,as it is generally recognized that these ''Day-by-Day'' forecasts....are ''abstract'' in seeming appearance and nature.

I note now,that Richard Gaikowski's military serial number,started '' 555....''.

Thanks for the information,Richard.I will see if there is a ''State Express'' link, beyond the locomotive train [..circa '20s,'30s..].

So I see this movie,derives from Indonesia,January 18th 2018.

Of course....the very configuration ''555'',has lucky connotations,in the Far East,by tradition.

Part of the reason for the successful sale of the ''555'' brand of cigarette,is belived to be,for this reason.And,''555 from State Express'' has,I believe, been the largest selling import brand of cigarette,in China, for many years.

I'll see if there is more information,on ''State Express'',specifically.

The American Tobacco Company's assets were split off into: American Tobacco Company, the existing R. J. Reynolds, Liggett & Myers, and Lorillard. The monopoly became an oligopoly. The main result of the dissolution of American Tobacco Trust and the creation of these companies was an increase in advertising and promotion in the industry as a form of competition.
Liggett & Myers kept control of these plants: Liggett and Myers, St. Louis; Spaulding and Merrick, Chicago; Allen and Ginter, Richmond; smoking tobacco factory in Chicago; Nall and Williams, Louisville; John Bollman Company, San Francisco; Pinkerton Company, Toledo; W. R. Irby, New Orleans; two cigar factories in Baltimore and Philadelphia, and the Duke-Durham branch of the American Tobacco Company.

Some extra information :

The Empire State Express, ran regularly between New York [NY] and Buffalo [NY].The locomotive was assigned the serial No.999.

''555 from State Express'' were made from a blend of Virginia tobacco, and are believed to have first been introduced, into the commercial market place,in 1896.

''555'' is also a telephone prefix number, introduced to USA and Canada,in the early 1960's.More commonly recognized,as part of the ''555-1212'' number for directory assistance.

The ''555'' prefix is employed ''sparingly'',since,it traditionally is employed in fictious scenarios,in the Arts.....like TV dramas and comedy programs, for example.

Yes Rubislaw. Did you ever wonder why phone numbers in TV shows and movies always start with the numbers 555?

555-1125.

It's 555-3455.

555-2401.

Narrator: The short answer is that most 555 numbers are not working numbers, so real people won't be harassed if diehard fans try to call them. 555 was an exchange combination that was not used very often in the American telephone system.

If you consider the Zodiac's winter hibernation of December 20th 1969 (Belli letter) to April 20th 1970 (excluding Johns). Then October 27th 1970 (Halloween card) to March 13th 1971, and his hibernation from December 20th 1968 to July 4th 1969, the concept of a Zodiac flying south for the Winter months, possibly to LA or Riverside, isn't so far-fetched.

The English connection to Run a Crooked Mile.

Join the Lee Valley Ranger Team and take a look at the birds that have migrated to the River Lee County Park for the winter. There should be plenty of winter duck to see such as Pochard or Teal. You may catch sight of the rare Bittern or hear Water Rails squealing from the reedbeds. They may be plenty of winter gulls around and Cormorants competing with the anglers.
River Lee Country Park stretches between Waltham Abbey in Essex and Broxbourne in Hertfordshire this 1,000 acre park has a huge variety of activities to enjoy! Perfect for kids and families to couples, walkers, cyclists and wildlife watchers.

Interesting information,Richard.

Yes...I had taken note of those winter periods, for 1969/1970 and 1970/1971,when I was working out Zodiac's apparent summer breaks, also.

Just finishing watching ''Run a Crooked Mile [1969] ''.There is a single key theme, yet to be explained.

Will post any further information.

....and thanks for bringing to attention, the 1968/1969 winter break, also.

Which,of course stands documented, even though he had yet to declare himself,as ''The Zodiac''.

Having watched the TV film,''Run a Crooked Mile [1969] '',I believe the pasting does have an explanation :

The story, turns into a tale, mostly about how, school teacher Richard Stuart, investigates how it came to be,that he had been suffering from bouts of amnesia, after witnessing a man being killed.

At the outset, and in examining what Stuart believes is a crime scene,Stuart finds a [lock] key, which he keeps...with the viewer, throughout the film, being reminded of its ''yet disclosed'' significance.

Only near the end, does the viewer find that the key, merely represented a means of unlocking a driveway gate,in the shape of a fallen tree.Perhaps meant to be a bit disappointing [?].

So,I think the [presumed] Zodiac's ''message'',in pasting ''Run a Crooked Mile [1969] '' was, that not everything has significance and that,in the case of the TV film, what looked like a clue that might unlock a mystery....was actually a red herring.

Interesting, perhaps, that 21 years later,in the Eureka Card, the [presumed] Zodiac left the image of ''two keys'',to test the curiosity of the viewer.

Here is an alternative Rubislaw. The Day-by-day forecast for Cancer was mailed from Sacramento to the Sacramento Bee newspaper. The Leo communication carried the Crooked Mile reference, postmarked the following day.

The Crooked Mile at Fairytale Town in Sacramento is one of the storybook -inspired park's original and most well-loved attractions. Here's a look at why the "mile" is so beloved. By Emily Zentner.
Follow the red, winding, up-and-down, tree-covered road? That's just what many a family and child at Sacramento's Fairytale Town have done on the storybook park's beloved Crooked Mile.
The Crooked Mile is one of Fairytale Town's original playsets, and it opened on the Land Park grounds on Aug. 29, 1959, according to the park's site. The Crooked Mile was inspired by one of Mother Goose's more obscure nursery rhymes, "There Was a Crooked Man." The English rhyme reads:

"There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile.

He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile.

Richard

The Leo communication was mailed in San Francisco
Lombard Street, San Francisco the Crookedest Street in the World.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RbWjd2r4N0

Lombard Street's west end is at Presidio Boulevard inside The Presidio; it then heads east through the Cow Hollow neighborhood. For 12 blocks, between Broderick Street and Van Ness Avenue, it is an arterial road that is co-signed as U.S. Route 101.

The design, first suggested by property owner Carl Henry and built in 1922, was intended to reduce the hill's natural 27 percent grade, which was too steep for most vehicles. The crooked block is perhaps 600 feet (180 m) long (412.5 feet (125.7 m) straightline), is one-way (downhill) and is paved with red bricks. The sign at the top recommends 5 mph (8 km/h).

Imagine if Zodiac was a pilot. It matches the phrase "This is the Captain Speaking" to "This is the Zodiac Speaking", it could be why he chose Flight 555 from the advert, and then in 1971, God forbid, became Dan Cooper as Shawn suggested. DB Cooper, they reckon, had a knowledge of aircraft and the fact that aeroplane he hijacked had descending stairs at the rear. Heaven help us.

Ah....so there is a possible link, between the playset Crooked Mile,at Fairytale Town,Sacramento and the 1969 TV film's solution to the mystery key....a ''fallen tree''.

When the Birds Fly South is a lost race fantasy novel by American writer Stanton A. Coblentz, defined a "significant tale ... involving avian theriomorphy."[1] It was first published in hardcover by The Wings Press, Mill Valley, California in 1945 and reprinted in 1951. Its importance in the history of fantasy literature was recognized by its republication by the Newcastle Publishing Company as the twenty-third volume of the Newcastle Forgotten Fantasy Library in April, 1980.

Dan Prescott, an American adventurer, discovers the hidden valley of Sobul in a mountainous region of Afghanistan, inhabited by a strange race of winged people known as the "Ibandru". He falls in love with one of them, Yasma, and they marry in a scene of general celebration. When fall comes, however, the Ibandru abandon their valley to fly south with the birds for the winter. Unable to bear the loss of Yasma, Prescott pleads with her to remain with him rather than participate in the traditional migration, with tragic consequences for his marriage.

Thank you Richard and Rubislaw for the encouragement. Much appreciated.

If he was a pilot, maybe he carried a rabbit's foot, four-leaf-clover, or other amulet for good luck when flying. There was also an article on Amulets, Incense, and Spells in the Examiner on 14 Sept, 1969 that mentioned multiple times "John Wellington Wells," the character from Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Sorcerer."

Richard

I think I've been on a few of those flights JD. If I see a pilot wearing a rabbit's foot I get off. I was looking at your "Want Watch Zodiac". There was a Zodiac Aviator Watch, but I don't know about 1969. I would like to tie the entire correspondence together on flight or travel/time/schedule.

Richard

And look what happens when you Google "John Wellington Wells" JD. You get a phrase from Zodiac "My Name is John Wellington Wells".

https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=John+Wellington+Wells

Alexis and Aline arrive ("With heart and with voice"), and it soon becomes clear that his widower father Sir Marmaduke and her widowed mother Lady Sangazure are concealing long-held feelings for each other, which propriety however demands remain hidden ("Welcome joy, adieu to sadness"). The betrothal ceremony is carried out, and left alone together Alexis reveals to his fiancée his plans for practical implementation of his principle that love should unite all classes and ranks ("Love feeds on many kinds of food, I know"). He has invited a representative from a respectable London firm of sorcerers to Ploverleigh ("My name is John Wellington Wells").

Amulets which are said to derive their extraordinary properties and powers from magic or those which impart luck are typically part of folk religion or paganism, whereas amulets or sacred objects of formalised mainstream religion as in Christianity are believed to have no power of their own without being blessed by a clergyman, and they supposedly will also not provide any preternatural benefit to the bearer who does not have an appropriate disposition.

8/25/2019 04:07:05 am

In summary from the flight/birds angle (an aeroplane or bird). There is a 555 font definitely derived from State Express Cigarettes. This is spread over two phrases "FLT Three of a Kind" and "FLT 555". There is an advert above, combining both State Express Cigarettes and Flight 555. Airports have to deal with bird strikes and migratory birds, which fly south in the winter, using the north-south Pacific Flyway of Bolinas Lagoon and the San Francisco Bay Area in general. Zodiac (or author) combined "Watch Birds Fly South" with "hidden" = bird watcher. But possibly with a sinister element. Keeps coming back to possibly a pilot and "This is the Captain Speaking".

''This is the Captain Speaking'' is certainly persuasive,as an influence.

A declaration,by someone in control,with accepted authority.

I suspect that the Zodiac,is a frequent flyer in civilian aircraft,who hears the expression,many times...so as to leave a mark,in his ''memory''.As opposed to possibly,being an actual pilot,himself [?].

More a case of a ''wannabe pilot'',who had taken an interest in aviation and model making, since childhood, perhaps.

And this is why, like Shawn,I am persuaded that the Zodiac ''became'' D B Cooper...as the extortionist.Cooper's exploits captured the Zodiac's attention immediately.

Of course...it's mostly conjecture, but with a few pointers....but,returning to ''This is the Captain speaking'',or indeed,''This is your Captain speaking''....there is also, the notion that the Zodiac wrote out his ''Little List'',from memory,of having heard a Mikado recording....soooo often.

Which,as a ''subconscious habit'' ,Richard, gives support to ''This is the Captain speaking.''.

Good going guys! Very interesting! Here's a thought.

The Washington Monument is an obelisk on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., built to commemorate George Washington, once commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and the first President of the United States.

From Wikipedia (555 Feet. Tall) The cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1848

Could the number 555 be signifying Masonic/Rosicrucian involvement.

Nice spot,on the Washington Monument,BB.

''Duplicity'' did seem to be the Zodiac's forte [?].

I think the idea of secret societies appealed to the Zodiac.Probably more to do that he didn't have any real friends,of note, and wondered if this might be a means, for real acceptance.

In a way,the Zodiac was in a ''secret society'' of ''one'' [?].

JD
8/25/2019 06:13:11 pm

I watched the video--quite interesting, in light of the timing of the "My Name Is ---" communication. Maybe he was highlighting the character rather than giving any real clue? Kind of like the "Groucho Marx card," since Groucho played Ko-Ko in the Mikado back in 1960 on the "Telephone Hour" program.

The only ad I've come across for a Zodiac watch that mentions "aviator" is 20 June 1971. Doesn't mean there weren't ads before then that mentioned "aviator," just the only one I've come across.

Rubislaw 32 link
8/26/2019 12:56:58 am

And of course,JD...the TV film gave a suggestion of a secret society,at the outset. But,they just turned out to be a goup of ''old boys'' that had formed a sort of co-operative group, who all invested in Gold.

And,with the key having been handed back, because the driveway access, was no longer required,by that investor.

Rubislaw 32 link
8/25/2019 08:46:11 pm

If I appear to be a bit flippant, with a secret societies link,to the Zodiac,I come to that conclusion, for a few reasons.

And,I have found that if one is tempted that he was a member of one....it can lead to an almost endless amount of research, with nothing much concluded.

If we accept that the Zodiac was a relatively young man [...say 25-30...],then we should first examine the reasons for him being in California,in the first place. Then examine if he was actually a ''Californian Man'',or if an outsider, coming in to the State.

Secret societies, like The Masons, don't normally accept anyone under the age of about 25.And,when they do,they like to be sure that they have a solid career ahead of them, and can be vouched for,by at least two family members...plus a few other friends,or work associates of those older family members.

So,if like I believe, that the Zodiac was an ''incomer'' to California....from a State, probably far away....then it follows that he would not be in possession of ''conventional''family members.like father and uncles, immediately around him.Just the sort of people,a young man needs,to get a ''toe in the door'',with a secret society.

All I recommend is...to consider this line of investgation, carefully.

JD
8/26/2019 01:34:23 pm

Yep Rubislaw, even found a Masonic 555. The following says founded in 2018, but as with all groups, there is a basis formed years ago. Check out the red cross:

Rubislaw 32 link
8/26/2019 10:01:44 pm

Yes...not meaning to be too generalised, but the red cross and swiss cross,go back as derivations of the St.George cross....which more usually are synonymous with forms of Protestantism....which,of course, was the bedrock of The Masons.

And,it does seem that most of these secret societies,in Western culture,of significance, like the Masonic movement, are linked to the ''WASP'' phenomenon.

White Anglo Saxon Protestant.

Rubislaw 32 link
8/26/2019 10:33:39 pm

From a personal perspective,I grew up with a prevalent element of the Masonic society,in the family...going back generations,on my mother's side...with my father embracing it,when marrying my mother. He became a Lodge Master, and a senior position. But,by the age of 50,he had ''distanced'' himself,in favour of Golf [!].

I sense that the idea appealed to the Zodiac...probably through observing its ''presence'' in the work place. But did not have the connections, necessary,at the time.

JD
8/27/2019 03:49:29 am

This is probably a big stretch, but I wonder if the reason he sent the pasted messages on horoscope pages had anything to do with a police interview on page 17 of the 21 October, 1969 San Francisco Examiner. Inspector Frank Gibeau said "It's the finger that'll turn this man up," meaning someone would turn him in. He further added that a stakeout might get him as well, "and Zodiac's Horoscope will take a turn for the worse." Bit of a stretch, but maybe?

Richard
8/27/2019 05:05:19 am

No, that is not a stretch at all, because Zodiac's campaign of communications was fuelled by what he read in the newspapers. Have you got the article cutting in its entirety JD?

Richard
8/27/2019 05:40:23 am

The Chronicle-Telegram from Ohio ran an article on October 17th 1969 entitled Astrologer Is Consulted In Hunt For Zodiac Killer. Captain Martin Lee "said yesterday the astrologer gave the detectives background on the science which apparently fascinates the slayer, who says his next target may be a busload of schoolchildren. We are going to have to learn something about it (astrology)".

Richard
8/27/2019 05:58:51 am

San Francisco Chronicle: October 17th 1969 'Astrologer Joins Hunt For Killer'. Seems a lot of newspapers covered the astrologer angle, therefore not too surprising that the Zodiac Killer would mail the December 10/11 communications using an astrological backdrop as his template. The man in charge of Zodiac's last murder was Captain Martin Lee (as referred to in the newspapers). This is the Chief of Inspectors he was replying to in the Bus Bomb letter on November 9th 1969. So, would it be that extraordinary that the Zodiac Killer would reference or intimate an aeroplane connection in his December communications, bearing in mind he could have been directly responding to a Captain. The article stated "a ten-man team assigned to the case has consulted with an astrologer here to give detectives a background in the exotic science that apparently fascinates the killer. We're going to have to learn something about it Captain Marty Lee said yesterday".

Rubislaw 32 link
8/27/2019 06:37:06 am

And with the ''Bus Bomb'' Letter,Richard...that would be,specifically, the reference to :

'' 2 coats of airplane cement ''.

Your ''This is the captain speaking'' may well be the most significant piece of information, learned, through this comments section....which also lends credence to the ''555'' ''traveller's cigarette'' and numerology significance of travel and new horizons.

The ''Day-by-Day'' forecasts : a reflection of a change in geographical movement, for the Zodiac...in his private life [?].

Looks more likely,I would venture.

Richard
8/27/2019 06:48:37 am

Nice addition to the list Rubislaw - like you stated, even if Zodiac wasn't a pilot he could have been an aeroplane enthusiast or a model plane builder (hence the cement reference). We certainly have a picture of a killer who was creative and seemingly liked the arts. The Zodiac Killer must realistically have designed and created his own costume, described as carefully crafted. Then we have his mention of airplane cement and his bus bomb disgrams. His creativity, using pasted messages, punch-holes and scalloped edges on certain correspondence, not to mention his film and theatrical tendencies. Enter DB Cooper again!

I have just visited the offical ''Revell'' site,Richard.''Revell'' being,by tradition, the largest model making company,in the USA.

Revell refer to model making glue as ''model making adhesive'',or ''gluten''.

It does strike one, that ''airplane cement'',is quite an indivualistic phrase, for ''model making adhesive'' [?].

And,''specific'' to the Zodiac,himself [?]

I would suggest that the Zodiac has deliberately employed ''his'' phrase,to include ''airplane''...as a clue,of a sort.

Richard

Leo (♌) (Greek: Λέων, Leōn), is the fifth astrological sign of the zodiac. It corresponds to the constellation Leo and comes after Cancer and before Virgo. The traditional Western zodiac associates Leo with the period between July 23 and August 22, and the sign spans the 120th to 150th degree of celestial longitude.

My apologies, for possibly misleading ''adhesive'' information :

There is a product,of sometimes varying precise chemical constituents,''sometimes'' called ''Airplane cement''.

Its chemical constituents, are usually ''Polyether Ketone'' or ''PEEK'',in shortened form.

Although more normally associated with coating electrical wire and cable housings....its ''loose'' name as ''Airplane cement'' is,because it can be employed for Balsa wood basic aircraft models, such ''free throw'' and rubber band powered propeller ones.

So one assumes [?],that the particular adhesive [PEEK],is used for models that require to stand up,to the rigors,of actual flight.

However, there still appears to be ambiguity in the Zodiac's expression,'' 2 coats of airplane cement ''.....since the implication seems to be,that the ''cement'' is to be applied,as a sort of varnish [...coat [?]...].as opposed to a ''construction'' purpose.

Does ''PEEK'' have any significance, perhaps [?].

Still,a bit baffling.

Rubislaw 32 link

Yes,I think the migration ''inference'' refers to the Zodiac's ''new'' arrangement,of commuting between Vallejo and ''new'' primary home,in Greater L.A. .

Personally,I believe that, for a year and a half, the Zodiac had been commuting, between Vallejo and ''then'' primary home,Memphis. And,largely using a SF - Memphis route via commercial aircraft.But...''now'',the Zodiac would be commuting,Vallejo - LA....and would predominently use his motorcar.

So,the ''Day-by-Day'' forecasts,were a ''celebration'',of sorts,at largely waving goodbye to commercial aircraft travel..for the time being.

The ''Zodiac'',I believe.had made Riverside vicinity his home, circa 1966,when he was a bachelor, and making regular work trips,to Libya....where the work and big money was,for young men, just starting out,in the Oil business.

But of course,I see the Zodiac,as being responsible,''only'' for the correspondences, related to the Cheri Jo Bates case.

Yes,Richard,I am certainly homing in,on the Zodiac ''becoming'' DB Cooper.DB Cooper's daring deed ''inspiring'' the Zodiac, when the Zodiac was at a ''low ebb'',perhaps [?].With seemingly having to leave the ''Zodiac arena'' of terror, with his tail between his legs, having been found out,for pervarication,in the wake of a ''Karl Werner'' arrest, for Snoozy,Furlong,''and'' Kathy Bilek.

DB Cooper letters, may have given the Zodiac, something ''to do'',while licking his figurative wounds [?].

And,albeit a bit of ''jiggery pokery'' from counter intelligence, with the Exorcist Letter.....was nevertheless, the return of the Zodiac, familiar to most....and with a hint at one of his ''personas'',while he had been away [ D B Cooper - the extortionist ] :

'' He plunged him self into the billowy wave and an echo arose from the suicides grave.'' titwillow titwillow titwillow

Yes Indeed,Shawn....a Canadian comic book hero.

A possible link, with the Zodiac,is certainly worth looking at.It also ''embraces'' that the Zodiac, was under the FBI's ''microscope'',as the North Hollywood Hoaxer, who may have,at one time, resided at Canoga Park, and owned a second vehicle, with an Oregon licence plate.

But,with the Hearst/SLA case, going on,at that particular time,it seems that the FBI were too stretched to follow up,on the Canoga Park report, with vigour.

Rubislaw 32 link
8/27/2019 01:57:37 pm

I won't drift too far away from topic,Richard,if fellow contributors wish to stick with the forecast correspondences....but in mentioning D B Cooper....

I think Cooper's chances of survival, with weather conditions alone, were slim....and believe he entered a lake, going straight down,to the bottom. His money bag/case spilled....and that is why some money [...about $10,000,in $20 dollar bills...] was later recovered by a river bank - and in poor condition, suggesting the money had spent extended time,in the water.

But,there was an element of the money having been buried,in the river bank,at a shallow depth.

I believe a camper recovered the money, and ''sat on it'',for a day or two, wondering what to do.Should he keep the money, and try to spend it [?] - or take it to the authorities.

I think the camper, with sense and knowledge, realized that the bills were traceable. So,then decided to bury the bills....since he also realized that the authorities would know that the camper had considered keeping the money,as a first option.

Back to D B Cooper....I think that the Zodiac was ''tickled'',to say the least, over Cooper's daring,to jump....but would have realized that,in all probability, quite soon afterwards, that Cooper had died in the fall.

Hence,it gave the Zodiac,a confident start....to become the legendary hijacker [....37 passengers...],through correspondences.

This is certainly of interest,BB....in that it lays out the ''fundementals'' of the bases for repetitive ''lucky numbers''.

In essence that they all share a common factor of '' 37 ''.

Where ''Number Theory'' and ''Numerology'' find common ground.

Yes indeed, with a ''17'' allocation for the Zodiac's ''column count'' for his two largest ciphers.

I believe also, that Z148,was originally intended to be a ''second'' Z340...therefore would have been the Zodiac's ''third'' 17 column cipher.

Then,it would seem, that the Zodiac changed to 13 columns, with [presumed] Z263 [...incomplete..] and Z63 [...incomplete visually...].

In addition, the ''My name is -----'' cipher,is technically a 13 column cipher....but,with only ''one row''.

Schools are going ''back to class'' now,in the USA,after the summer.

In recent years, the phenomenon of hate and violence threats, seems to have been most prevalent in SF Bay area,L.A.,and Tampa Bay area of Florida.

Only six days ago,at Burns Middle School,Hillsborough County,Florida, the following message was found :

Dear bms students I will be shooting that skool up September 3rd 2019 be ready say you're goodbyes to you're family because that is final Good luck be ready

Worrying times.

I would say that it's more likely that Zodiac was referencing the consultation of the astrologer, rather than the detective's comment, when he made the mailings, though it could have been in response to both. But nice find!

And nice thinking on the model angle, Rubislaw! It could be that he was a model enthusiast as an adult, but just as likely he could have been as a child. Although you couldn't purchase traditional models from Testors and Revell until later, "airplane cement" was commonly used for homemade model airplanes in the 1920s and 1930s.

Going back to the magic amulet...that was a pretty common term in the newspapers, and could be something as commonplace as a medal, rabbit's foot, or anything that holds some value to the person carrying it, to protect them from evil. I wonder if he took a "magic amulet" from a victim? Or, soldiers used to carry "magic amulets" during wartime. I wonder if it was something he carried? There was a play in the 1950s called the "Magic Amulet."

Not to get off subject, but "Christmass" was a common term found in the newspapers, used by certain demoninations. And Friday nights were common Fish "Fry" nights, especially for certain churches. I wonder if he picked this up by association, or just picked up the terms in the newspaper.

In regards to the 2 coats, glue is used by a lot of people for cuts, especially on their hands. He probably put some on his fingertips, let it dry, then applied a second helping. I'm not sure how much that distorts one's fingerprints.

Some very interesting comments,JD.

Only to add...there is a possibility that the Zodiac ''saw'' his cigarettes,as representative of a ''lucky mascot''.''That'' which became his constant companion...particularly when whiling away hours spying and stalking.

And a good point from you,on glue being used to temporarily ''shore up'' a finger cut,for example.

With regard to the purpose of disguising fingerprints...I think that the Zodiac was just bragging [?].In theory, the practice is feasible...but beieve that he would have realized that attempts,of this nature, would only have handicapped him,in attempting to perform, some of the tasks they he had set out,for himself.

Paul Stine's execution,of particular note [?].

The last 18 of the z408 are really just 17. Because the last row is really all it is.
As each row is 17 - What is the last symbol of row 23 - It is a circle with a dot
in the center of it. Which just means - period. The remaining line/row is filler - designed
to through off the connection to the number 391. And make you think the name of the
Zodiac is 17 or 18 characters long. The name Zodiac has six symbols.
Therefore it is a cipher that we could call the z6. Thereby z6 + z13 + z32 + z340 = z391 enciphered.
Of all that are deciphered to date is just the z408 - which logically is just z391 deciphered.
The logic of a numeric code makes sense since the Zodiac will/would never give his name.
The enciphered 391 synchronizes with the deciphered 391 - which seems significant.

You could be right,BB,on assessing that the Zodiac allocated 17,as opposed to 18 last charcters,to the ''408''.....as appeared to be an anagram puzzle, for the solving of.

If,as is more than likely, the Zodiac ''went ballistic'' when he saw the Harden's solution published....it would have been, because the Harden's solution appeared to have more spelling errors, than the Zodiac had designed his solution to have....therefore giving the first published solution,an ''infantile'' quality.

As the FBI Cryptanalysis Unit, would have subsequently found was, that the Zodiac had deployed 8 symbols, with polyphonic properties.Since three of these symbols appeared,in the last 18 characters, then there would have been 8 possible variations of interpretation, for those last 18 characters [ 1X2X4 = 8 ]

Hence, the FBI would, and ''have'' concluded that the Zodiac, really has no justification,to reveal,at a time of arrest that....there was an actual solution, for a ''solved'' anagram.

Whatever the Zodiac claims,in the future,the 408,as he presented it,left a ''dummy'' solution to those,either 17,or 18,final characters.

''someone'' at a well known Zodiac website,has just posted a thread,entitled :

''There is a link Between Cecelia Shepard and Paul Stine''

Well...pardon most of us,if we believe that we are reasonably up to speed,on the case.

Hasn't anyone told that ''someone'',that the Zodiac, himself,is an already established ''link'' [?].

JD

You're probably right about the cigarette angle, Rubislaw. People in general tend to apply special meaning to everyday items if they make a connection between the item and some good fortune. The design on the cigarette pack, especially with the 555, could be considered a lucky shield of sorts. And, like you say, he very well could have spent a lot of time smoking while driving and stalking and whatever else he did.

I think it is a ''general consideration'',JD,but wouldn't be insisistent about it.

So,we have the probable inference of a ''special'' lucky charm....with only clues, that we are aware of....on the same page [?].

If,a stab in the dark,I would be inclined to think,a graduation ring,or similar.

Tricky,to be sure [?].

In the days leading up to Ted Bundy's execution,by Electric Chair, crowds gathered outside his prison, and were estimated to be about 50:50 on Pro and Anti,Capital Punishment.

In the ''Pro'' camp, one banner read : ''Tuesday is Fryday''.

Yes,the fish ''Fry'' night...is certainly a pertinent spot. It's an official tradition of the Catholic Church, but often embraced by all denominations of the Christian Church.

To select ''fish'' as the main meal,on Fridays...and fry it.

In examining planetary rulers,in Astrology...interpretation can vary, according to ancient or modern doctrines.

Cancer is ruled by the Moon,in ancient doctrine

Leo is ruled by the Sun,in ancient doctrine

There is a site, called The Planets Today.com ,which might give a better understanding,of a modern interpretation.

What I have noticed is,that Venus and Mars are close together...and they represent the symbols for the ''Female'' and ''Male'' respective genders.

Put together, they constitute the symbol for a [lock] key, which has been adopted by ''Penthouse'' magazine,as their official logo.

Is the US November 1969 issue of Penthouse magazine, the basis for the ''Day-by-Day'' forecasts ?

Have yet to be able to delve among the pages of that particular issue,to find out.

Rubislaw 32 link

I'll see what I can do,to gain access to the pages of that US November 1969 issue of Penthouse. If any readers are able to assist....that would be good.

In September 1969,Penthouse was first introduced to the American market place....having been started in the UK,going back to 1965.

So,Penthouse would be relatively new to the Zodiac,in his own country.

The models employed for the magazine, were known as ''The Pin-Ups with no Hang Ups'',So,that might also be a clue [?].

Rubislaw 32 link
8/30/2019 06:30:45 am

Still looking...but,have come to the conclusion that it is ''Penthouse'' only,as a ''men's magazine'' possible link,to the ''Day-by-Day'' forecasts [materially].I have all but eliminated the other prime candidate,''Playboy''.

Beyond ''Penthouse'',then a female orientated magazine...or ''In flight'' publication, possibly [?].But,certainly a ''monthly'' periodical for the month of November 1969.With a 12 or 13 page allocation to Astrological matters....probably ''short lived'' as a popular format [?].

Do you know about the ''Ogham Tree of Life'' symbols,Richard.

Someone has just made me aware of them, and I realize that the Zodiac employed three of their symbols,in Z148.The ''three'' that I can see,are ''Grove'',''Ivy'' and ''Silver Fir''.

Perhaps another ''confirmation'' of Z148's Zodiac authenticity.....since this ''someone'' claims to ''see'' other Ogham symbols,in other correspondences, including the Halloween Card....but,which I have yet to ''see'',myself.

Back to the ''Day-by-Day'' forecasts....is it just a coincidence, that these forecasts, start ''November 1st''....as far as the Zodiac ''might'' be concerned [?].Naturally, the first day, following ''Halloween''.

Trouble with these symbols the Zodiac employed Rubislaw, is there doesn't seem one origin he sourced. Had this been the case it would certainly have been discovered by now. It is curious he chose the month of November subsequent to Halloween, although this may simply have been the only available month in the astrology magazine he had available to him - otherwise he probably should have chosen December. It may become clearer when we fully identify the purpose or victim within the communications (if any at all).

You are right,Richard....just when we might get a little excited...we can lose sight of the fact that, the Zodiac was....a scavenger.

I was getting excited about that ''someone'' revealing ''Ogham'' symbols on the Halloween card....but I think that he is actually referring to ''aspects'' to the Zodiac's ''special signature'',on the card.
