"CARS MAKE NICE WEAPONS"

3/25/2019

On October 27th 1987, a letter was mailed to the Vallejo Times-Herald stating "This is the Zodiac speaking. I am crackproof. Tell herb caen that I am still here. Tell the blue pigs if want me I will be out driving around on Halloween in my death machine looking for some kiddies to run over. Cars make nice weapons. The pigs can catch me if They can find me out there. Just like in the movie The Car. Tell the kiddies watch before they cross the street on Halloween nite. Tell Tochi my new plans."

Experts very quickly determined it was a hoax letter. "The fake letter sent to the Vallejo Times-Herald in midweek was a simulation of a hoax letter written in 1978", police Capt. Roy Conway said Thursday. "The determination was made by experts in the state Department of Justice", he said. In Sacramento, spokeswoman Melinda Stehr of the attorney general's office said handwriting experts confirmed the letter was a simulation of a letter sent to the San Francisco Chronicle a decade ago, which was also considered to be a hoax."Someone saw the letter and was using it as a copy."  Stehr said. "It's a fake. It's a hoax". UPI.
PictureClick to enlarge
The person responsible for this letter (if a hoaxer) was certainly determined to reinvent the Zodiac Killer after an absence of nine years from the April 24th 1978 letter, or thirteen years from the January 29th 1974 'Exorcist' letter. So, why would the hoaxer choose one of the already publicized hoax letters to imitate, rather than the copious other communications deemed genuine? In other words, why would a hoaxer choose a hoaxed letter to convince everybody he was genuine?

The opening three lines of the 1978 and 1987 letters are extremely similar, with both "telling herb caen he had always been here". Why would a hoaxer, determined to convince us he was the Zodiac Killer, not only choose a previously 'debunked' letter, but imitate the wording so closely as to give the impression to investigators it was just copied? On the flip side, if the author was the Zodiac Killer, such a concern would not be a consideration. A person attempting to hoax the 1987 letter would first have to access old newspaper cuttings of Zodiac communications and handwriting to copy. If they were prepared to go to this effort, then they may as well have reproduced any Zodiac correspondence from 1969 to 1971, as opposed to selecting the 1978 letter.

PictureDavid Toschi
"The Tochi reference is to David Toschi, who was the prime investigator of the Zodiac killings, which began in 1968. He was demoted after being accused of sending a fake Zodiac letter to the San Francisco Chronicle in 1978". UPI.

The hoaxer must surely have been aware of David Toschi's perceived involvement in writing the 1978 letter and his recent retirement from law enforcement, hence the belated reference of "Tell Tochi my new plans", but nevertheless, continued on to mimic the 1978 letter anyway. The author of the 1987 letter could not have accidentally chosen to copy this letter without realizing the authenticity issues surrounding it - rather he chose it for purpose. The author of the 1987 letter could have been the author of the 1978 letter and therefore did not have to "see the (1978) letter to use it as a copy", and as a result, there was no need for imitation. The assertion by investigators that the author of the 1987 letter was somehow attempting to copy the 1978 letter would be negated in this instance, as it would be if the Zodiac Killer had authored both letters and didn't care if they looked similar in style or wording. If the 1987 letter had looked wildly different to anything mailed previously, people would say "the handwriting looks nothing like the Zodiac Killer". In this instance though, the difference was clearly not enough and therefore considered "a simulation".  The December 7th 1969 and December 16th 1969 'Fairfield' letters both fell foul of this contradiction.

The Zodiac Killer implied he was responsible for the August 3rd 1969 double murder of Kathy Snoozy and Deborah Furlong in San Jose, when he mailed the November 8th 1969 'Dripping Pen' card. Two weeks later, on November 21st 1969, the San Jose Police Department were sent a warning letter threatening harm on a "widow". Then came the December 16th 1969 'Fairfield' letter which threatened "more blood" at many different locations, including a policeman in San Jose.

On July 13th 1971, a pasted card was mailed to the San Francisco Chronicle with the words "Near Monticello Shought Victims 21 ...... In The Woods Dies April". This was referencing the murder of Kathy Bilek (18) on Sunday, April 11th 1971, stabbed multiple times at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga (just west of downtown San Jose), only nine miles from the neighborhood of Monticello. This neighborhood sits next to Oak Hill Memorial Park, where Kathy Snoozy is buried. At about the same time, a 148 character cipher was received by the San Francisco Chronicle, postmarked Fairfield, California. Bearing in mind Kathy Snoozy, Deborah Furlong and Kathy Bilek were all stabbed innumerable times, disfiguring their bodies, it is rather telling that the author of the 148 character cipher and letter should threaten 3 more young people like so: "Tis the Zodiac Speacking. Why can't you stop me. I can't stop killing. Stop listening t(o) phonys. If this is not on your front page in a week I will skin 3 little kids and make a suit from the skin" and "next time I will send a patch of human skin if there is some left over".

Picture
If the Zodiac Killer was responsible for the above mentioned outlier communications, then it wouldn't at all be surprising if he mailed a later communication referencing the murder of three more "little kids" in San Jose, and used this as his inspiration to threaten "kiddies when they cross the street on Halloween nite".   The 1987 Letter-Death on Four Wheels.

Could all the information required to write this letter be obtained from Robert Graysmith 1986 Book "Zodiac"?

Certainly Shawn, that is an extremely likely possibility.

They had DNA in the 1990s as well. I just hope this isn't another false dawn. The questions to ask is where did they collect the DNA from and why did it take over a year to achieve. They also have to collect viable DNA through several letters to confirm one person was responsible for the mailings, otherwise we will have the same old question marks.

Shawn

I was thinking a definitive Zodiac DNA profile could be obtained by matching one of the 3 Stine Shirt envelopes with the Murderer of Nancy Bennallack (Zodiac had been suspected in this case).

Unfortunately Nancy B. killers DNA has been in DNA databases for years with no matches yet.

Yes....this is thirty year old news,re-hashed,for those failing to keep up.

It's a match that is required, and ''this'' was achieved, shortly after Mr.Trump became President.Though the ''match'' ws already suspected, two years prior to that.

Anyone noticed that this [so called] news, coincides with Robert Mueller's completion of his investigation, into why Mr.Trump fired Mr.Comey.....and ''not'' wholly about ''Russian affairs''.

This is just another ''ruse'' to keep the public from badgering their busy local ''Bobbies''.The ''authorities'' are getting on with it...but at a staggering snail's pace, and require the public's patience.

In addition, another call for the Zodiac to give himself up....which isn't going to happen....since,the authorities are telegraphing, also, that they don't quite have enough, yet,to arrest him, with the confidence of a conviction.

So,why should the Zodiac give himself up [?]...is his way of thinking.

Like all the times,in the past, there is always a good chance that the authorities will go and mess things up.

My cynicism is really about the time factor. This ''latest news'' is just yet another shot,at buying time for the authorities.

Perhaps,in another 6 months, there will be another piece of [so called] ''interesting news''....to buy the authorities another 6 months of time, without recriminations.

???

Surely you must realize that only a very small percentage of the population still concerns itself with the Zodiac case? Sometimes you write as though it is the top crime on everyone's minds today. I would hazard a guess that probably only about 0.3% of the population thinks about the Zodiac case on a day to day basis. The vast majority of people, that goes for law enforcement too, would probably go years without ever giving this case a single thought. So as for any conspiracies relating to the timing of current political events and this cold case, I personally cannot see how, or why for that matter. I think you are looking for connections that simply do not exist.

For regular visitors of the Zodiac websites,in general, and zodiacciphers in particular, the Zodiac case,is ''...the top crime on eneryone's mind.''.

And,if they only happenened to be '' 0.3% of the population'',holding a daily interest,in the case....''that'' is their choosing.

Your remarks, therefore, are not only fatuous, but patronising to readers and regular contributors, alike.

In the words of ''Judith'',I re-iterate :

Why are you here ?

You clearly have a life elsewhere [?].

Your last posting, was to let everyone know, that you wouldn't be contributing to the Zodic debate, anymore.

The greater surprise, might be then.....why are you back,if only to pour scorn [?].

I will say this only once. It is both sad and funny when people get so wrapped up in something that they think it is the only thing the rest of the world is thinking about, to the point that it is even influencing modern politics.. and occasionally such people come to believe this "important something" is impacting directly on their own lives and, in fact, demanding them to become even more "wrapped up".

I actually correct myself. I think in reality the figure would be probably closer to 0.1% or much lower. It would be interesting to do a survey in the main street of San Francisco today? Basic yes/no responses to simple questions like. "Have you ever heard of the Zodiac?", "Is there a day goes by when you never think about the Zodiac case?", "Is there a week goes by...?", "Is there a month goes by..?", "Is there a year goes by...?", "When did you last think about the case, if at all?". I am quite certain that a great many of the people in America today would claim little or no knowledge of the case. So to suggest it is influencing the policies of Trump and law enforcement today as some kind of conspiracy is just a tad "loopy". It reminds me of the folks who rant on about aliens in the freezer in Area 51 and who think this is an ongoing conspiracy that still influences American (and world) politics to this day. There are inherent dangers in getting too wrapped up in something, but it always seems to be the case that those who find themselves so ensnared do not seem to realize they have fallen into their own trap of unprovable falsehoods. In effect such people often become their own worst enemies. The conspiracy is, in fact, entirely of their own making. But instead of accepting the glaring truth they prefer to blunder about in the dark of their own little rabbit holes and seek retaliation against any person who tries to warn them.

.....oh....and if the authorities just happen to be reading this :

In addition, that Zodiac is not getting any younger....and might just die on you....while you continue to faff about.

It is interesting to hear about your latest reports,on what Mr.Voigt is actually saying, nevertheless,Shawn.

We are, after all,an interactive social network of folk, with a common interest.

But,perhaps this seems to be news, that is more about Mr.Voigt, than the Zodiac [?].

Someone from his Mr.Voigt's own site, has already speculated that Mr.Voigt must be ''three sheets to the wind'',after a night on ''the boozer''.

I suspect that, whatever the truth,Mr.Voigt is doing himself no favours,if there is no follow up,of official comment, from either Law Enforcement...or complimentary comment,of a sensible nature, from members of the press [?].

If the latest round of testing has produced any viable results, then a possible match could have been generated from Zodiac's son or daughter, who would now be approximately 56-60 years of age. This would certainly add validity to the highly questionable Kathleen Johns abduction.

Shawn
3/28/2019 10:34:22 am

I posted the below at ZKS...thought I share here.....

March 26, 2019 - Washington Post

This is WILD! - apply to the Zodiac case?

Below is a 45 y/o case where the Murderer was dead (died in 2003) and had no criminal record but was a suspect. They did not obtain DNA from his body or a object he might have owned before or after he died.

The police held a news conference saying the Dead Man was the killer. SLAM DUNK IMO!

https://www.washingtonpost.com/crime-la ... 1c974c9638

"On Monday, Yellowstone County Sheriff Mike Linder announced at a news conference that his office believed the person who had committed the murders was Cecil Stan Caldwell, a local man who had died in 2003 at the age of 59. Caldwell had no criminal record,"

"investigators were able to obtain DNA evidence from the purple trousers Linda had worn the night of her killing."

"Parabon used a “snapshot DNA analysis service to accurately predict the physical appearance and ancestry of our suspect.”

The lab produced a “composite profile” of the suspect that estimated what he would have looked like and conducted more analysis in 2018. Parabon identified two “high-confidence leads” through genealogical research. One of them was dead.

On Jan. 18, Linder said, investigators took samples from the living suspect, and a few days later, the Montana State Crime Lab ruled out that person. Through the process of elimination, investigators were able to pinpoint Caldwell as the killer."

It all seems to be unravelling,at Reddit, where Mr.Voigt has been subjected to ridicule from fellow contributors, which has included a phantom claim that the Riverside Police were about to make an important announcement.

A different type of ''Game on'' [?].

Rubislaw 32 link
3/26/2019 07:19:25 pm

Yes,Richard,I certainly got your subtle humour [...that Mr.Voigt might take 6 days to recover from a hangover of hangovers [?]...].

But I think the ''baited breath'' atmosphere discounted any of us,from appearing to be flippant.

We should all have sympathy for T.Voigt,really.It was just one of those ''happenings'',and we can't accuse him of lacking ''passion''.

It's all our own doing, that we take an interest in the case,to the extent that it can affect us detrimentally, someimes [?].

The point I wanted to make, was with regard to public prosecutors....who ''absolutely'' rule the roost,if the prospect of a crimial case, starts to look like there may be an arrest,in the offing.

It seems to me,that a public prosecutors ''worst nightmare'' is being ''turned over'' by a defence council,in cases that they are expected to win.

It could be,and probably is the case that prosecting a case, like the Zodiac's....is full of pitfulls.Perhaps, ordinarlly in their jobs, anyway, prosecutors have little faith in the ''spirit'' of the law,and even, are not trained to become ones, with that in mind.

But,one feels that,if the Zodiac is ever going to be brought to justice, then someone senior,in the judiciary,is going to have to make judgement calls, beyond their ''comfort'' [?].

If they do have the Zodiac,''in their sights'',history, much less the bereaved, will not forgive them,if they are not prepared to push out,on those limits of comfort.

One realises that, the ''O.J.Simpson'' trial, may have affected barrister's in ways, that run much deeper than us ''mere mortals'' might imagine.A moral precedent, that no one saw coming [?].

We must simply hope that there are individuals, that work in the justice system, brave enough to confront the complexities of the Zodiac case, with confidence.

An ''opportunity'',rather than a ''burden'' [?].

Judith

But,yesterday, was a bit of a reality check, from which we have yet to fully recover [?].

Rubislaw 32 link

It's not my place to guess what you are thinking,Tom,but from what you have stated,I believe that you get ''The Real Picture''.

Starting with, that Det.Poyser's little speech about ''Two envelopes and a secret lab.'' was a complete fabrication. And further that,Det.Poyser's entertainment of Mr.Voigt, for Voigt's invitation to the Vallejo Police Department, was just a con,to win Voigt's trust.

All these ''tears at bedtime'' from Mr.Voigt's members and followers, has been largely,as result of not understanding how Det.Poysers words, have not transcended, into anything meaningful since.

And Mr.Voigt, ably assisted by Mr.Rodelli, has carried Poyser's ''conjuring tricks'',in a wave of misinformation, which has included, such myths,as meaningful work taking place at the SFPD labs.,and simply disowning real laboratory work, that took place,at Quantico,in 2002 and 2003....which still stands up,signed for,by a host of senior employees of the CA DOJ and FBI.

Not least, the signature of President George W.Bush,also.

In the end,one just gives up,trying to persuade so many people, that they have been conned [?].

And that,Mr.Rodelli still shows up,occasionally,to attempt to perpetuate this misinformation, because it suits his claim that Mr.X was the Zodiac.,and might squeeze a few dollars more, out of a book, which underpins his ridiculous accusation of Mr.X...who was cleared,in the work carried out,in 2002/2003,by the FBI.

Until it is understood, universally, that this Zodiac case,is 99% the work of the FBI and CA DOJ....then there will continue to be,''tears at bedtime'',for many members and followers of Mr.Voigt....who,deserve better information....like the truth, for example.

Please do expound further,Judith.

In reflection, and the few posts, that Mr.Voigt has made to-day,I believe that his ''source'' was ''Vallejo Police related''.

Mr.Voigt was ''stitched up'',at least in his own mind.

Only the day before,he was referring to members of the Vallejo Police,by ''first names'',and I think that individuals in the Vallejo Police, believed that Mr.Voigt was eager and ''ripe for the picking''.

Based probably on circumstances, that go ''way back''.

As I have mentioned before,Detective ''Terry Poyser'' has much to answer for.

If it is any consolation to Mr.Voigt,he joins a small band including Paul Avery, who was set up by Sergeant John Lynch of the V.P.D.,and Captain Cross of the Riverside Police.

Yes indeed,I remain accusing.

There is a certain gentleman, now retired one year, who performed the ''dirtiest tricks'' imaginable,in Law Enforcement politics.

I will certainly be outing him,at some stage, since some of his ''victims'' were democratically elected politicians.

An ''Assurance Reviewer'' of the police,no less....and personally appointed by someone whose name, will always ''raise eyebrows''.

For now,I just refer to him as ''Wiggy'',and for obvious reasons.

'' Touche Toupe ''.

Tom was tipped that they found DNA and that no one has been identified. He shared that because he assumes that Zodiac is dead, but that of course remains unknown (he could be a perfectly healthy septuagenarian), which is why it was premature to share that info. He feels terrible about it but it doesn't seem like the media picked up on or believed the scoop so probably no harm done.

Richard
3/27/2019 03:06:36 pm

If Mike Rodelli (via Keel) is correct about the Exorcist letter matching the 1978 letter, then they already have a full DNA profile as far back as the late 90s. If law enforcement don't believe the 1978 letter is genuine, then this explains why they are not testing the Exorcist letter. So why do we keep hearing this is the last confirmed Zodiac letter.

Drew
3/27/2019 03:24:04 pm

My current belief is that Rodelli interpreted Keel's information correctly and Exorcist 74 and I'm Back with You 78 are a match and therefore a profile, but not of Zodiac. They simply must believe that a hoaxer is responsible for those letters, unless that unambiguous FBI DNA test report is incorrect. Perhaps authorities have encouraged the myth to continue that the Exorcist is legit because it gives them an easy way to vet false confessors. I'm sure keen to hear the real scoop about what is going on out there. All I can say is that I am more encouraged now than before Tom's post.

Yes Drew, and respect to you for standing up for ''T Voigt''....who has neither lied, nor broken the law.

Any lessons to be learned, are for Mr.Voigt,himself.

And,if I might add,it serves to remind us,that what words come from Law Enforcement, are seen, more and more,to be taken, with a pinch of salt.It is ''actions'' that we really want to see [?].

Most of us,I think, would hope that Mr.Voigt still feels in one piece.

It can be these ''provincial cops'' that behave the worst.Their forces,as in the case of the Vallejo Police, represent the highlighted failures,in the case, over the years.....and,as these provincial forces, become only of use to the real authorities, for trivial and menial tasks....tend to get up to such antics,as getting their own back on individuals, like Mr.Voigt....who has upset them,in the past.

Ultimately,it is the person, who elected to inform Mr.Voigt, who will bear the shame...that's if they pocess any sense of right or wrong....or truth or lie.....which is probably doubtful [?].

These are certainly interesting comments about the April 1978 letter and Exorcist letter of 1974.

It can be difficult to come to a personal conclusion, that one sticks to,and is happy about.

It is slightly disconcerting,to know that Sherwood Morrill, vocally protested over the questioning of the April 1978 letter, when there seems like good reasons to believe it to be a fake....and yet,Morrill was philisophical about all the Bates correspondences,''not'' being assigned official authentication....when Morrill was confident that all those Bates correspondences,to be ''Zodiac-legit''.

Morrill appears to have picked the wrong correspondence,to stand his ground [?].

I feel confident that the Exorcist letter ''is'' authentic Zodiac. But,here's the thing....we know that the FBI doctored it,when initially published.

So,how can we feel confident, that what we see now,of that Exorcist letter, has been completely put back,in its original presentation [?].

I just feel sure that an ''actual'' Zodiac signature,of some description, has been omitted from what we now view.

Did ''Zodiac'' really just leave his famous doodle, and notice of ''37'' victims, behind ?

I don't think so.

The latest suggestion of a ''new'' Zodiac suspect, comes from the Zodiackiller Reddit website, and is none other than,Hollywood legend,Burt Reynolds.

Mr.Reynolds once dated regular Zodiac contributor,Ms.S.Betts,but apparently, their relationship came to an end, after Ms.Betts stood Mr.Reynolds up.

Motive for Zodiac, therefore,is offered by inference, that this is how Mr.Reynolds reacted to,effectively, being ''dumped'' by Ms.Betts.

One wonders if Ms.Betts has given due consideration to Mr.Reynolds,as one of the many candidates that have fulfilled the criterea for her ''My suspect'',at a given time, over the years [?].

A ''novel'',but perhaps unlikely proposal,then,from some ''bright spark'',at the Reddit website [?].

Gosh....perhaps the most ''telling'' dig for Zodiac websites,at events that unfolded,48 hours ago.....was a sketch of Bryan Hartnell's car door, submitted at the Reddit website.

On the car door,was written,as follows :

Latest ''Reddit'' feedback :

A latest poll of favoured ''Zodiac'',currently has ''Honcho and his two partners'',at No.1.

Is that the favoured suspect of Ms.Betts [?]...and his split personalities, perhaps.

A ''Richard'' at ''Dead On Arrival'' has suggested that we ''Do your best to create a bogus suspect ''.An exercise, apparently, that involves creating hoax DNA,making up criminal evidence, and matching a complete innocent,to currently available Zodiac sketches.

Who is this ''Richard'',I wonder [?].

It has occurred to me,that the ''Richard at DOA'' could be a reference to ''Richard Gaikowski''....a ''voice from the grave'',so to speak [?].

Perhaps,T.Voigt has been told that there is evidence that exonerates Mr.Gaikowski, from any Zodiac involvement [?].

Twisting the knife....a possibility,perhaps [?].

....I have to admit, that thoughts that some of these ''Reddit'' contributors might be related,in some way to ''Bay Area Constabulary''....has crossed my mind.

A ''stab in the dark'',perhaps,....but almost as if ''some'' have suddenly felt the freedom,to act as they so wish [?].

If these Reddit contributors are as knowledgeable about the case,as they appear to be....why didn't they belong to the more ''conventional'' sites, before [?].

Or,did they ?

Hi Richard, I have a completely unrelated question for you if you the have inclination to provide an opinion. I know you have questioned the conclusion that the wing walker prints at LB belonged to Zodiac (and thus the mismatched tire tracks as well), but Police and other committed researchers seem to treat the prints as fairly concrete evidence. Are you more than 50% convinced that they Zodiacs?

I did once upon a time think they may not necessarily be Zodiac's, but have since concluded that they most likely are (95% certain). But the tire impressions I certainly don't believe were from Zodiac's vehicle, because I believe it was parked 0.8-0.9 miles north. If Zodiac left from behind Hartnell's vehicle and drove directly to the Napa payphone, then he did it at an average speed of 23 mph. Also, I am of the opinion Dr Rayfield & Son spotted Zodiac after the attack. Why do you ask Drew?

Thanks Richard. Nothing new here, I'm just idly pondering discrepancies and consistencies in the physical descriptions.

If Zodiac wore 10.5 shoes it seems size 7 gloves would be too small, but I think everything else in the case would suggest size 7 gloves would be a match. Mageau thought Zodiac 5'9" 170 with a belly and that seems very close to the SF descriptions, but Hartnell (who was on uneven ground and an unusually tall individual himself) thought he could be as tall as 6 foot and there was a test at LB that put the attacker over 200 pounds. I'm convinced it was Zodiac alone at all of the locations (especially if all bullets at LHR are recovered and matching) and that these are just naturally battling witness descriptions. The temptation is to split the difference and say 5'10" 185 pounds, but another approach is focus on how close the BRS and SF descriptions are.

Glasses are another component. No glasses at BRS but Tom Voigt says Cecilia mentioned glasses at LB although the sunbathing girls didn't. I like the Perez argument for Zodiac picking up Stine's glasses, but according to Voigt they did recover the glasses.

At any rate I am just trying to arrive at what I believe the proper day to day description of Zodiac at that time would be. cheers

I tend to go with 5'8" to 5'10". Hartnell was a poor judge of height and no doubt the hood added inches to the appearance of Zodiac. Equally, the waistline bib would have given the impression of a more imposing figure. I know Tom has stated that he believes the police recovered the glasses at the Stine scene. However, this was stated by police;
"San Francisco police said Thursday that they were still waiting for Perez to produce a pair of glasses that she said her father took as a souvenir from a cab driver he killed. Police believe the Zodiac shot a San Francisco taxi driver named Paul Stine on Oct. 11, 1969. Reports of the crime say that Stine's glasses were missing. Once you make complaints to a police department, you are required by law to provide the evidence to a police agency, and there is no reason to believe she is not going to do that," said San Francisco Police Sgt. Lyn Tomioka. Asked whether police were taking her claims seriously, Tomioka said: "We take any new leads or any new information or evidence and look at it seriously, and then we follow up to see if there is any legitimacy to the statements."

Why would they be waiting for her to produce Stine's glasses if they already had them. Why would they have even considered for a second she was credible. Yet, they did for several days. Doesn't this suggest they didn't have the glasses.

Regarding the drive from Lake Berryessa to Napa pay phone, I made that drive once. I had an automatic transmission, and I was driving it as fast as I could drive safely. It's a typical winding, semi-mountainous California road. I wouldn't be surprised to know a reasonably careful driver, using a manual transmission vehicle, would average 23 mph on such a drive. I don't have my notes with me, but I am confident I didn't average more than about 32 mph.
