BEYOND THE GATES

5/22/2014

PictureBryan Hartnell and Dave Slaight
After the Lake Berryessa attack on September 27th 1969, the police report stated that the assailant had mentioned 'Lodge State Prison' in an interview conducted by Sgt John Robertson at the Queen of the Valley Hospital on September 28th 1969. Bryan Hartnell stated that the assailant said "I just got out of...some prison in Montana" and "It's some double name, like 'Fern Lock' or something". The wording was scrutinized, with one accepted avenue for further investigation being the possibility that a connection existed between the hooded attacker and Deer Lodge Prison in Montana. Bryan Hartnell also recalled to Sgt Robertson that the assailant had also mentioned that "he broke out and had to kill a guard getting out". But how much of this is based in fantasy, either from the killer's imagination, or from Bryan Hartnell being prompted towards certain responses by the suggestive nature of the interview, performed only one day after the brutal attack while he was still under heavy sedation?

Deer Lodge Prison is approximately 1,000 miles from Lake Berryessa, and no guards were reported to have been killed in the relative timeline. The suggestion of such was almost certainly designed to instill fear and compliance from his victims. However, there was still a possibility that the killer may have inadvertently let something slip that was relevant to his history, and more importantly the police investigation. On Sunday September 21st 1969, only days before the Lake Berryessa attack, two convicts, Carl Pierce (27) and Ronald Woods (22) made an escape bid by cutting through the wire fence at the rear of Rothe Hall, Deer Lodge Prison, Montana. This newsworthy story may have had an influence on the Zodiac Killer's strategy when he entered into dialogue with Bryan Hartnell, or may well have just been something that he recalled on the fly to divert investigators away from his real identity. However, the ferocity of his attack on Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepard clearly indicated that there was no intention to leave any surviving witnesses, so any cover story would be superfluous. It would therefore seem that any of the information he revealed would not have placed him at any risk, other than if he had been disturbed during the commission of the crime or immediately prior to his attack. Was the September 21st 1969 escape from Deer Lodge Prison relevant to his history? If this was the location he really mentioned to Bryan Hartnell, it may prove that what he said, if he had no prepared script or dialogue that evening, may be the closest to the truth we can ever truly attain.

Edward Wayne Edwards was a convicted serial killer who spent time at Old Montana State Prison, where he recalled one prisoner in his autobiography, stating "this man remains my most uncomfortable memory". Edwards stated that this individual believed that anyone he killed would become his slave in the next life. He goes on to say "This demented individual showed an overwhelming interest in science fiction and Egyptian literature". That prisoner, Donald Lee Bujok, was also present during the 1959 Montana Prison siege, known as Jerry's Riot, and was released three days prior to the Lake Herman Road double murder on December 20th 1968. See here. During the riot, prison guards were held hostage, with Jerry Myles, one of the ringleaders warning that any attempt to recapture control of the prison would result in the killing of the hostages, by fire, by hanging or by stabbing.
Picture
Bryan Hartnell's white 1956 Karmann Ghia at Lake Berryessa
The inmates already had guns, so death by these four methods may have provided the inspiration for the Zodiac Killer's Halloween card, mailed on October 27th 1970, especially if the Northern California killer had indeed resided within the walls of Old Montana Prison, whether he was present during the riot or thereafter.

John Cameron, a former Great Falls, Montana police sergeant got to know Edward Edwards in Montana Prison and firmly believes that he is the Zodiac Killer. The suggestion of slaves and the afterlife by another prisoner in Edward Wayne Edwards autobiography Metamorphosis of a Criminal, may have been a case of supplanting his thoughts firmly at the door of someone else. Like the Zodiac Killer, it was a game he truly enjoyed playing and may have been his final attempt at mocking the authorities. Many researchers have placed Edward Edwards in Northern California during the timeline of the Zodiac murders of 1968 and 1969. There is little circumstantial evidence tying Edwards to the Zodiac murders, but one thing we do know about Edwards,  is that he was a ruthless killer not to be taken at face value. John Cameron has recently released a book entitled 'It's Me, Edward Wayne Edwards, the Serial Killer You Never Heard of', complete with the Zodiac crossed circle, to leave you in no doubt where his suspicions lie.

But the story doesn't end there. In the March of 1971 The Akron Beacon Journal ran a story by William Kezziah about two former inmates from Akron, Ohio, who served time at Old Montana Prison, Deer Lodge - who both had their suspicions on the Zodiac Killer's identity. One former prisoner Edward Wayne Edwards has already been discussed, but the second wanted his identity withheld from print for fear of reprisals, however, he did recall the inmate was called Richard. Unfortunately though, he could not recall his surname.
Picture
He stated he first recognized the likeness to the inmate he once knew when he saw the composite sketch of the Zodiac Killer in a story by the Beacon Journal in February 1971, chronicling the Zodiac Killer during and after the callous murder of taxicab driver Paul Stine in Presidio Heights on October 11th 1969. He spent time with Richard at Deer Lodge Prison somewhere around the years 1956 to 1959, remembering that Richard was somewhat a loner, bullied by other inmates. However, he was an auto mechanic and very interested in reading Egyptian history. This was not the first inmate to have leanings towards this particular subject. We cannot verify whether these recollections are accurate, born out of genuine experiences or simply a case of 'attention seeking' - yet they are worth noting.
He goes on to say Richard had killed a police officer (and comparing Ohio to the sentencing leniency of Montana) revealed that in his mind, he would only have likely served 18 years jail time. Old Montana State Prison, he believed, had housed approximately 20,000 prisoners since it creation, so it would not be too difficult to narrow down the search. If his information is accurate, it isn't difficult. You visit Montana State Prison records here, enter Richard into the search box and up comes the list of all prisoners between 1869 and 1974 with the relevant name. Then once the correct years have been identified, there should only be a handful remaining. Then lastly, identify the crime attributed to each person to verify if any murdered a law enforcement officer. It is highly likely that this would have already been cross checked by investigators.

Cheri Jo Bates was believed to have been murdered in the late night hours of October 30th 1966 at the Riverside City College library - her body discovered on the following Halloween morning by a caretaker. She had been brutally stabbed and slashed numerous times. Sometime during this period, it was considered that the Zodiac Killer may have written the message found on the inside of a school desktop, known as The Riverside Desktop Poem and discovered by a janitor in late 1966, that ultimately may have significance to the Bates crime. The message ended with the initials RH. Checking these initials in the Montana State Prison records, one can find Richard Haessly, Richard Harris, Richard Hayes, Richard Heavygun, Richard Hill, Richard Happel, Richard Helten, Richard Hodke, Richard Hunt and Richard L. Hendrickson.

So, if the Zodiac Killer did sign his initials and our man from Akron, Ohio is correct, that the inmate at Montana State Prison is of worthy consideration, then we have ten names of great interest. You can check out most of this list here, which shows the prisoner records, including age, occupation, date incarcerated, length of sentence, vital statistics and mugshot. Only two of the names show slight promise, but I will let you decide for yourselves. But if detective work was this simple, the case would have been solved years ago. This approach is too simplistic and relies heavily on the testimony of a former inmate, whose memories may be deliberately or inadvertently skewed, especially since eyewitness recollections are far from accurate - not only from this case - but quite possibly the composite sketch drawn up from the three eyewitnesses at the Presidio Heights crime scene. Furthermore, we do not know whether the RH at the foot of The Riverside Desktop Poem were intended as initials.

PictureCheri Jo Bates
The question however remains. Is the Montana connection a valid one, or should we have been looking in a totally different direction entirely. Although Fern Lock proves elusive, there is a Fern Valley. The town of Idyllwild is situated in the San Jacinto Mountains in Riverside County, California, a scenic backdrop flanked by the nearby communities of Pine Cove and Fern Valley. It is approximately 58 miles due east from Riverside, CA, notable in Zodiac circles for the tragic murder of  Cheri Jo Bates. The Zodiac Killer had arrived at Lake Berryessa by vehicle, and therefore a route from Deer Lodge Montana, had it occurred in the days recent to his attack, could have taken him through the areas of Twin Falls, Idaho, as well as Elko, Reno, Carson City and Lake Tahoe, Nevada, the area where Donna Ann Lass disappeared some eleven months later. Was it a route he was familiar with and would later revisit?

Was the Zodiac Killer an inmate at Deer Lodge Prison, or had some connection to prior to December 20th 1968? Did he return to prison between March 22nd 1971 and January 29th 1974? And are the words he gave up on September 27th 1969 something he never foresaw being repeated and therefore their significance to unveiling the truth may be closer than we think.

I have a long-lingering suspicion that the Lake Berryessa assailant was a Zodiac copycat, since the M.O. was so radically different.
The Zodiac wore a costume and engaged his prospective victims in conversation, revealing information whether true or false. The Zodiac
tied up his victims. The assailant was described as robust, stocky with a full head of black hair and didn't wear glasses. This description conflicts with all other descriptions of the Zodiac. He drove a light-blue Chevy, which conflicts with the white Chevy Biscayne that witnesses claim the Zodiac drove.

Richard, Has anyone been able to locate the prison archive photos / rap sheets of Pierce and Woods? I attempted to find them on the MT state prison archives but was unable to locate either of them. I'd be curious to see what they look like. I recall we were able to find Bujok and a few others; I'd certainly like to find out more about these two.

I myself haven't been able to find any photographs of these two. In the link below Zodiac Killer Site forum provide a link to the Billings Gazette, for which I have no subscription. But whether or not the article carries any photographs who knows. I shall ask the members on the forum Gregory.

The only problem with Richard LeRoy Harland is a weight of 145 lbs and size 7.5 shoes. Admittedly he has over a decade before 1968 to gain weight, but unless we are assuming he wore fake or oversize shoes at Lake Berryessa, this man is not a good fit for Zodiac. The Deer Lodge Prison is a tantalizing feature of the Zodiac story, but I cannot help thinking that this is not what Bryan Hartnell heard, moreover he was guided to this conclusion by his interviewer. If he did hear Deer Lodge on the day of the attack, would Zodiac be that lapse in releasing such a monumental clue about his identity, rather than using this primarily as a scare tactic to put his captors under duress. I much prefer the Colorado link, based on the Halloween Card, Fred Harman and Pagosa Springs, as the mentioning of an American state is far less revealing and specific, although I still have my reservations.

All good points Richard. I suppose the reason I cling to the Deer Lodge possibility has to do with Edward Edwards, a former inmate at Deer Lodge, revealing the various points of information he did about an individual who was interested in ancient Egypt, slaves for the afterlife, etc. Such a description obviously sounds remarkably like Zodiac. Do you guess it's possible Edwards may have been fabricating these remarks in order generate attention to his book? If so, it didn't work, at least not immediately: I don't believe the connection drawn from "Metamorphosis" was revealed until many years, decades even, after the book's publication.

As for Zodiac's possible revelation about his stay at Deer Lodge - well, people say that if he planned on murdering them he had no reason to hedge about personal information re: his identity. If Hartnell was led into admitting Deer Lodge, it is still quite an obscure place for the interview (and interviewer) to go. I think it's safe to say most of us have never - nor would we ever - heard of Deer Lodge outside of the Zodiac case.

I was combing through the Montana prisoners with RH initials and the Deer Lodge escapee I linked came as across as perhaps the most intriguing of a group in which no one seemed to come even remotely close to a suspect. True, there are plenty of factors that weigh against him. The Montana State Prison Records online archive seems far from a complete record of every inmate who has served time in that state.

As you know Gregory the person Edward Edwards was referring to was Donald Lee Bujok, released three days before the Lake Herman Road murders after an 11 year sentence for the murder of a policeman Otto Fossen. I always wondered whether Edwards was actually writing about himself but projecting it upon somebody else. But if I am correct Edwards stated that this individual swallowed the bullets from his gun, which Bujok did after the crime, so he was likely recalling the details as accurately as he could. What I always found interesting was Kevin Robert Brooks contention that the Phillips Petroleum road map was actually inferring that Mt Diablo was actually inferring this was the home of the devil. When this crosshair was overlayed over his home residence of Roundup, Montana, and set to MagN of 17 degrees in 1970, the directional north arrow passed over the two adjacent counties of Phillips and Petroleum, in fact it passed directly over both county seats.

"As for Zodiac's possible revelation about his stay at Deer Lodge - well, people say that if he planned on murdering them he had no reason to hedge about personal information re: his identity"

This is true, but he knew that in his previous attack Mageau survived and there was no guarantees. He may have revealed crucial information in the knowledge that both his charges were to die, but he must have also known that anything could have happened, he may have been interrupted during the crime, anybody could have arrived and disturbed his plans or one of the victims escaped etc. By not revealing any information or false information, you take no risk regarding crucial his background.

"If Hartnell was led into admitting Deer Lodge, it is still quite an obscure place for the interview (and interviewer) to go. I think it's safe to say most of us have never - nor would we ever - heard of Deer Lodge outside of the Zodiac case".

I agree that most of us have never heard of it and it does seem an odd place to mention, although Zodiac may have had a connection indirectly through acquaintances or friends. Back in 1959 there was Jerry's Riot at Old Montana Prison that made national headlines and Bujok was incarcerated at this time. Remember this: Excerpt from Wikipedia: "This started a twenty-four-plus hour standoff in which Myles railed openly to the media outside the walls; Alton retired to his cell after an argument with Myles, convinced that no escape was forthcoming; Jones was again allowed to leave the prison to negotiate with Powell and, under orders from the warden, did not return; and the hostages survived repeated threats of death by fire, rope, or knife." They already had guns.

Thanks Richard. I didn't realize that Edwards was specifically referring to Bujok, I always assumed there was still some degree of uncertainty with relation to exactly who it was he was suggesting. Re-reading "Beyond The Gates" I suppose it was the second, and still unnamed, Deer Lodge inmate who pinpointed "Richard" the auto mechanic - also, incidentally, interested in Egyptian history - as a Zodiac suspect. Due to the anonymity of his claim (were there other anonymous inmates who said this as well?) and the dearth of findings on "Richard" I wonder if we should we treat this as anything other than unfounded rumor and hearsay?

You write:
"Old Montana State Prison, he believed, had housed approximately 20,000 prisoners since it creation, so it would not be too difficult to narrow down the search. Well, if his information is accurate, it isn't difficult. You visit Montana State Prison records here, enter Richard into the search box and up comes the list of all prisoners between 1869 and 1974 with the relevant name.
Then once the correct years have been identified, there should only be a handful remaining. Then lastly identify the crime attributed to each person, to verify, if any murdered an officer of the law. Whether this was ever followed up on though is anybody's guess."

Any chance you know the correct year of his crime?

"He goes on to say Richard had killed a police officer and comparing Ohio to the leniency of Montana, revealed that in his mind, he would have likely served only 18 years jail time."

He committed the crime (murdering a police officer) in Ohio?

The infomation about the riot hostages being held captive under threat of 'fire, rope, knife, gun' should only further the cement the 'Montana connection' and lend credence to the idea that he did, in fact, mention this to Hartnell who recalled it accurately, don't you think?

As I've said before, Frank Dryman is arguably another key component in this because of his connections with Vallejo as well as Deer Lodge.
I know that Dryman was locked up 12-20-68, but could he have directed Bujok to Vallejo? Of course it's also problematic to consider whether Bujok had the means (transport, money, etc.) to make it to Vallejo in three days...I've always doubted he could be the killer because of this small timeframe he would have had to get there.
The chance of finding out more on "Richard," however, seems as though it could be a source of optimism...Recall that in "This is the Zodiac Speaking" Mike Mageau told us Darlene said that this may have been the name of the stranger who pulled in behind them.

Here is an image of the page in Metamorphosis of a Criminal

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh97/tahoe27/TracersEd_Edwards_met_a_man_from_Deer_Lodge_MT.jpg

That Deputy Sheriff he shot was Otto Fossen and the outhouse Bujok was hiding in, was in Chester, Montana.
"Deputy Otto Fossen (65), a 30 year veteran of the Chester Sheriffs Department, was sent to investigate, and located the stolen car, just a short ten minute drive east of Chester in the small town of Joplin. The vehicle had a flat tire.
Deputy Otto Fossen questioned a manager at the Farmers Union Elevator to see if he had noted anything suspicious in the area, where upon he noticed some activity in the area of Highway 2, Joplin Road, spotting a man being led away from a car. He was now to make a decision that would forever leave its mark in Joplin, but unfortunately, for all the wrong reasons.
He approached the suspect in his car, but things soon turned sour. A man determined to reach his destination that day and a deputy simply performing his duty, had lit the touchpaper that exploded into a powder keg of tragic consequences, as a scuffle ensued between the two men, entering the patrol car of Deputy Otto Fossen. Five shots shattered the tranquil Montana air. Moments later a man exited the car and fell into the nearby ditch, sadly it was Deputy Otto Fossen, struck five times to the neck and chest, that proved fatal and he died shortly after reaching hospital.
Donald Lee Bujok escaped the scene in Deputy Fossen's patrol car, but was now a marked man living on borrowed time, as an unprecedented, two hundred strong manhunt ensued, armed to the teeth, with every weapon imaginable. Eventually he was cornered later that evening, hiding in an outhouse, just north of Chester"

Thanks once again. I suspect that Edwards and the unnamed Akron, Ohio former Deer Park inmate are probably referring to the same person. Why the unnamed source calls him "Richard" while we infer Edwards was alluding to Bujok is anyone's guess. But the fact that both "Richard" and Bujok have an interest in Egyptian history and both were incarcerated for killing a police officer seems to indicate this individual is one and the same.

Edward Wayne Edwards was supposed to have left a safety deposit box. My guess is the government seized it so we will never know what was in it. I really do believe I knew him under an alias and I've seen him which is an understatement at various times in my life. The government is supposed to be liable for crimes he committed while on parole in 1967-1977. I'm not holding my breath. I just haven't been able to breathe well for a long time. If I could just snap out of it and forget him, I can start my life over just in time for senior discounts! I have so much to look forward to. By the way, he was an FBI informant; their "honorable man!" You really should read John Cameron's book "It's Me!" and also the Undetectable Serial Killer Theory Edwards posted online. It really is sad to think that while innocent people kept going to prison, Edwards killed for 66 years and of course they had to have known! Ralph Ulysses Brickenshaw. I drew a sketch of him. I called and wrote "There is a very smart man carrying gov't credentials. He is killing innocent men, women, and children all over the country. Somebody has to stop him!" I drew a sketch. The people who would have come forward to say yes, that is what I told them, they've all passed away by now. Sometimes I wish I never even brought the subject up. He is just taking more time from my life. I saw him in his Zodiac costume twice. I didn't know about the Zodiac Killer in California then. I was a kid and then a teen-ager and by then the Zodiac Killer was some hippie stuff in CA to me. If he cut the slits bigger maybe he wouldn't have to wear glasses to see out. That is what I thought when I was 12. It still looks like he used an upside down grocery bag for a pattern. Maybe you saw the picture of him in the reindeer sweater. Lightning ought to strike a Satanist who dares to wear a tacky Christmas sweater. Some things really are sacred. The purpose of having a sense of humor must be for survival. If you don't believe this you probably won't believe the Head of the CIA converted to Islam while on a trip to Saudi Arabia or that Nancy Pelosi thinks Hamas is a humanitarian organization. This country is in deep trouble." The inmates are running the asylum." Isn't that a saying?!

Zodiac Unmasked Part III
12/5/2016 06:44:24 am

If the guy at Berryessa was indeed the Zodiac killer, admitting that there were no Zodiac clan killers (another known theory), then the clue about Deer Lodge Montana prison is certainly a massive clue.

The 2 main suspects are E.Edwards and Donald Bujok. The problem is that if you link Cheri Bates 1966 murder to Zodiac then Bujok couldn't be the man because he was still in prison.

I didn't know there was another guy named Richard in that prison, if he somehow managed to escape or leave prison prior to 1966 then he must be the Zodiac killer, because Darlene Ferrin mentioned a guy named Richard who was after her and she was fearing for her life.

If you discard both Bujok and this unkown "Richard" then it remains E.Edwards that can fits perfectly the Zodiac killer, clever, cyphers and having joke of police, framing other guys. He was even on television and still was committing crimes. Hartnell never heard again the voice of Zodiac so we must discard all but Bujok and "Richard" but since Bujok was in prison in 1966 then it must be this unkwon "Richard", what great progress solving the identity!

Since Edwards was convicted as a serial killer, the FBI should ask Hartnell to listen to Edwards' voice. He was a guest on "To Tell The Truth."
