A GAME OF CHESS - THE 7/19/78 LETTER

On July 19th 1978 a typewritten letter from Los Angeles arrived at the San Francisco Chronicle stating: "I am the ZODIAC and I am in control of all things. I am going to tell you a secret. I like friction tape. I like to have it around in case I need to truss someone up in a hurry....I have my real name on a small metallic tape. You see, while you have it in your possession, I want you to know it belongs to me and you think I may have left it accidentally. I am athletic. It could be swim fins, or a piece of scuba gear. But maybe you play chess with me. I have several cheap sets in closets all over. I have my name on the bottom of the lid with the scotch tape....My tape is waiting for me all over California. Do you know me? I am the ZODIAC and I am in control".

This letter mailed to the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper and described by Robert Graysmith in his Zodiac book, appears like a mishmash of inane ramblings of somebody "not in control", although sometimes there is method in the madness if you look hard enough. The one thing the Zodiac Killer did on numerous occasions during his initial letter writing campaign, was to respond to the recent newspaper articles he read. There is no reason why this letter cannot be unpicked by looking at articles published in the San Francisco Chronicle in the days leading up to July 19th 1978 - the date of this typed correspondence.

In this newspaper collection compiled by cryptographer Dave Oranchak it can be seen that a flurry of newspaper articles preceded this 'Zodiac' mailing, from July 11th 1978 to July 18th 1978. They were entitled The Rise and Fall of a Good Cop, New Puzzles Further Muddle Zodiac Case, Officials Jittery Over Latest Zodiac Puzzle, New Zodiac Disclosures, Feinstein Says Toschi's Being Crucified and Gain Talks About Toschi. They all highlighted the plight of Inspector David Toschi of Homicide Detail, who came under suspicion for forging both the Exorcist letter, mailed on January 29th 1974, and the most recent 'Zodiac' communication on April 24th 1978, which stated "Dear Editor, This is the Zodiac speaking I am back with you. Tell herb caen I am here, I have always been here. That city pig toschi is good - but I am smarter and better he will get tired then leave me alone. I am waiting for a good movie about me. who will play me. I am now in control of all things". Considering this July 19th 1978 letter was mailed just after these newspaper articles about David Toschi, parroting "I am in control of all things", it is a fairly safe bet that this typed communication was addressing David Toschi personally.

Quicktrader, from the Zodiac Killer Site forum, highlighted the first clue in the letter, in which the author states "I have my real name on a small metallic tape", "I have my name on the bottom of the lid with the scotch tape" and "my tape is waiting for me all over California". Scotch Tape could be bought all over California, and this version of the product did have a name on the bottom of the lid. Was this the Zodiac Killer insinuating that his forename was Paul?

But what inspired the author of the July 19th 1978 letter to hint at his "real name" in the correspondence? In the San Francisco Chronicle article on July 18th 1978, entitled Gain Talks About Toschi, the journalist writes "Zodiac is the name used by a man who killed six persons at random - five in the Bay Area - in the late 1960s". So this may have been the perfect retort, declaring his real name was all over California on the bottom of Scotch Tape lids.

However, the author of this communication also refers to chess, stating "But maybe you play chess with me. I have several cheap sets in closets all over". He was offering to play chess with David Toschi for a reason that was well known - and published in many newspapers precedent to this typed letter. Here is the possible answer lying in the pages of the July 14th 1978 San Francisco Chronicle. It stated Maupin turned his phony letters from Toschi over to DeAmicis, who confronted the inspector with them in the deputy chief's office last Friday morning. Toschi admitted writing them. "My recommendations" said DeAmicis "was that because of ego problems we thought it in the best interest of Dave Toschi and the department" to consign him to pawn shop detail.

The author of this letter likely knew that David Toschi had been demoted from homicide detail to pawn shop detail and was currently taking a short holiday. What better way, in true Zodiac style, to ridicule the demoted inspector by offering the steward of the pawn shop detail a game of chess. The answer is always so black and white.

This purported typed letter,sent [..thereabouts..] July 19th 1978....I find of great interest,Richard.....not least,that it appears to be cryptically constructed,with much thought invested.

I hadn't heard of the proffered ''pawn'' link before....thanks for that and,it is indeed persuading,with the chess sets reference....and possibly ''cheap sets'',also [?].

The ''scuba'' reference does tend to jump out,as a ''blame palming'' trick,pointing at Mr.Allen [?].But the expression ''athletic'',is slightly perplexing,and have already challenged LE agencies,over what I believe to be a deliberate misrepresentation,of the word ''aquatic''.

Not that these agencies are likely to return answers...but it is important to make them ''uncomfortable'',whenever possible.

As for the various ''tapes'' [...friction,metalic and Scotch...].these hold ''huge'' significance for me,and have made further representation,to the same LE agencies.

Perhaps better that I post a reference to a possible victim,before going into further detail,on the ''tapes''.

A great article,Richard,and ''pertinently'',I believe,brings Dave Toschi more into the limelight,over this claimed letter....brimming full of enigma,both inside and out....the phenomenon of it,as an entity....and the composite contents,therein.

I think the swim fins, the scuba gear, and the I'm athletic comments are all used to help identify which can of tape he is talking about. Swim fins = Seals. Scuba gear= water. I'm Athletic= Cellulose(Cellulite). And his name is not at the bottom. Much too obvious. And from what I know of Zodiac if he says something is at the bottom, it's really at the top. His Name is at the top as this is "HIS TAPE". Scotch=Toschi Tape=Dave. Tell me a code man like Zodiac wouldn't have seen that Scotch and Toschi are similar letters and that Tape and Dave are similar. T rhymes with D and P rhymes with V in tape and Dave. Just a few thoughts.

Of course,I don't challenge agencies,to ''score personal points''....but important to keep them on their toes,and focused.

What they fear most,is that one will go running to politicians or bereaved of victims.

With the July 19th 1978 letter,one could see ''a Zodiac'' picking up,on the then recent fuss over accusations of forged letters,and Toschi's ''professional plight'' and reputation,brought into question.

Toschi also had his supporters,including Diane Feinstein....now,all these years later,a long serving California senator,and oldest member of the Senate.

The Zodiac liked to ''meddle in muddle''.When he observed controversy,he saw an opportunity to make matters worse.

But,was that all,to his possible responsibility,for the July 19th letter ?

Whether one is persuaded by the authenticity of the April 24th 1978 letter....the message is clear : ''I am back with you'' and ''I am now in control of all things.''.

Or indeed,the authenticity or otherwise,of the May 2nd 1978 letter : ''I have decided to begin killing again.'' and ''See you in the news''.

And,returning to the July 19th 1978 letter : ''I am the Zodiac and I am in control of all things.''

Was the Zodiac,back in control ? But,perhaps more to the point,had the Zodiac,stuck to a claimed decision to start killing again [?].

There is one murder,in particular,that might answer that question.

Before you might give me an opportunity,to explain the July 19th 1978 letter,as effectively,a ''Murder Confession'',Richard....just wanted to home in on the ''Paul'' reference,and a possible explanation.

Clearly,a presumed Zodiac is expressing the ''usefulness'' of his various tapes,and adds that his name,is on the metallic tape,and lid of the Scotch tape.

Which presents a slight dilemma,for we have no [seeming] way of knowing ''which'' metallic tape,that he is referring to...[...though hope to put forward,a feasible candidate,shortly..].

But,yes...with a Scotch tape lid,we can,on examination,note the Christian name,''Paul''.

As a suggestion,and bearing in mind,still,the Zodiac's propensity for ''duplicity''....the ''Paul'' could be referring to Paul Avery.

''Paul'',the Zodiac's ''Secret Pal''.The ''Paul'' whom,the Zodiac found easy to goad.The ''Paul'',whom the Zodiac found to be good for his ''publicity''.The ''Paul'' through whom,the Zodiac could guage Law Enforcement's moods and intentions.

''Paul Avery'',LE's figurative and ''unwitting'' spy....so easily read by the Zodiac.

''Saint Paul'',the Zodiac's ''useful'' and ''secret'' pal.

I considered the Paul Avery connection as an afterthought, because of the cat & mouse rivalry exhibited by Zodiac and his communications with Avery. A sort of chess match rivalry with his adversary, who also competed for leads with David Toachi. Hence Zodiac hinting at the name Paul. I know you prefer the "Scotch" connection to somewhere you know well, and an ocean away. I haven't forgotten, in case you thought I had. The mention of "swim fins", "scuba gear" and athleticism is immediately followed by "but maybe you play chess with me", written as a form of contrast. Boasting his prowess and athletic ability, but now Toschi is taking a leave of absence is prepared to sit down with him for a sedate game of chess.

Yes...I think that the letter,for the most part,is a sort of '' What am I [?] quiz,and here are the clues ''.And in the main,the letter is direct at LE.

The ''But maybe you play chess with me...'',is change of tact,from the marine and ''physical'' inferences.

And,every reason that the Zodiac holds some mischievousness,in the chess reference ''erring'' towards Toschi specifically,as well as LE,in general.

But,the ''You see,while you have it in your pocession,I want you to know that it belongs to me,and I think I may have left it accidentally.'',in reference to the ''metallic tape''.....is the ''surprise package'',in what appears to be a ''set quiz''.

And the '' You see,while you have it...'',is,I believe,the murder confession.

This is a struggle for me...since ''The set quiz'',where ''I am the Zodiac,and I am in control'' is the Zodiac's obvious concluding ''answer'',having already told us,at the start,anyway.

But of course,it is what is contained,within the letter,with all these cryptic clues ''flying around'',that he hopes will attract our interest.And,may I suggest,Richard,is precisely what you have highlighted,for discussion.

As you are aware,and we have touched on,previously....just 5 days before this letter,and on July 14th 1978,Dr.Brenda Page was brutally murdered,in a frenzied and surprise attack,as she returned home,in the early night hours,following a dinner date,at a local hotel,with two Oil Executives.Ms.Page was a genetisist scientist and lecturer,at Aberdeen University,Scotland.

Indeed,across the Atlantic,for readers in the USA.On February 27th 2015,Frank Mulholland ordered a re-investigation of Ms.Page's 1978 murder,following a meeting with James Comey.And,five days later,the DA of Essex County,MA ,Jonathan Bloggett informed murder victim,Joan Webster's sister-in-law that Joan's case file,in totality,had been handed over to ''another DOJ''....though sister-in-law,Eve Carson's lawyers,were not to find out,that Mulholland had been the case file's recipient.for two years.....mostly on account of Carson's well paid lawyers ''not'' bothering to take out a pair of binoculars.....and look across ''The Pond''

So indeed,the implications are,that Mulholland suspects that Brenda and Joan....two ''Lizzie Longstockings'',from Aberdeen and Harvard Universities,respectively...were murdered by the same man.

Ms.Page suffered massive blunt force injuries,to her face and head,but did manage to scratch her perpetrator,in a vain attempt to defend herself.Following death,her perpetrator placed her body,in her bed,and removed her wristwatch that,in all probability,had stopped,at the precise time,of her attack.It was never recovered.

Her perpetrator then elected to stay in her flat,for a further two hours.At approximately 4:30 a.m.,an early morning milkman spotted a man leaving Brenda's property,and carrying a duffle bag.It is presumed that the duffle bag contained the man's bloodied clothes and murder weapon.

Following extensive searches,for the duffle bag,including the whole length of the 92 mile railway line,from Aberdeen to Edinburgh,the duffle bag was never recovered.....and with it,went much of the hopes of exposing Brenda's killer.

Since February 2015,Brenda's murder re-investigation,remains an open and live murder inquiry.

The public's assumption has always been,that,with the duffle bag,went the murder weapon.....''but''....

With the July 19th 1978 letter...could it be,that the Zodiac is admitting to,having left it behind,''by accident''.

Naturally,I have ''pushed'' investigating police,on this.

With regard to the murder weapon :

After about three weeks,following Ms.Page's murder [July14th 1978],the investigating police decided to release information,from a pathologist's report....though the report itself,has never been published.

The gist of what the police conveyed was,that the murder weapon,was presumed to have been a metallic object,approximately 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch,in width,and about one foot,in length.Quite ''slimline'' then.....and something akin to a small poker,or even a spanner or jemmy.

The presumption has always been,that this was the pathologist's conclusion,from examining Brenda's fatal injuries.

Well,having finally found the presumed Zodiac's July 19th 1978 letter,I became ''keyed in'' to this ''metallic tape'',for which his name was on it....and that he may have left it behind ''accidentally''.

Then it hit me [...figuratively,of course...]....that I actually owned a replica of the murder weapon [!].

''Metallic tape''....''tape measure''...a ''measured ruler''...a metallic ruler.

What I own is a solid brass desk ruler,with triangular cross-section.Simply ''indestructible'',and could do ''a lot of damage''.It is 1/2 to 3/4 in width,and about one foot long....slimline,but heavy.

This desk ruler,I acquired from the height of the Oil Industry,when there were some quality ''freebies'' often given away,by Oil related companies.

The desk ruler's makers are ''Scientific Drilling Controls'',and their head office,is in Newport Beach,CA.''Scientific Drilling Controls'' also have a number of branches,reading this information on the ruler...in Houston,TX,Ventura,CA,and Aberdeen,Scotland...to name just a few.

Naturally,I pressed the investigating police,on this also,but of course they wont give me an answer.But,the implications are,that LE have been keeping from the public,this information about the murder weapon,all along.

And,of course,Joan Webster is known to have died,through sustaining blunt force trauma,to the head,as well.

''I have my real name on a small metallic tape....You see while you have it in your possession,I want you to know that it belongs to me and you think I may have left it accidentally.''

Is that a reluctant confession,for the murder of Brenda Page,just five days prior,to the July 19th 1978 letter [?].

The biggest problem you have here Rubislaw, is a supposed Zodiac writing to the Chronicle newspaper in San Francisco in pigeon English, expecting that somebody at the Chronicle or in law enforcement will be able to decode the letter to a murder 5,000 miles away, above and beyond every other murder in the world in the last month or two. They could never have deduced this from the gobbledygook in the July 19th 1978 letter. This would in effect nullify the point of the letter. This letter can effectively be twisted any which way or lose, to fit hundreds, if not thousands of crimes around the world - and if Zodiac thought it possible for the Chronicle or Californian detectives to decipher this letter to a murder in Scotland, then he clearly thought highly of them. I would suspect law enforcement in Northern California have never heard of Ms Page's murder, then or now. We have, because we live in the UK, but I doubt many have outside of the UK.

All points taken,Richard....on that side of sleuthing,that few seem to follow....in effect,investigate what official LE are,or appear to be up to,one can uncover some surprises,sometimes.

Granted that most of it,is about being disappointed...but one,at least,tends to acquire a keener sense of protocol,the hierarchical nature of some of these agencies.....and indeed,on occasion,international relations,between LE agencies.

One can make a difference...and I would lay claim,to assisting Eve Carson,to acquire her ''verified family'' status,for example....though it wasn't something I set out to do.But,whether one is persuaded,by Joan Webster being a bona fide Zodiac victim,or not....her case file,including any or no forensics potentials....have indeed shifted to the Crown Office,in Edinburgh.

On a general point about the July 19th 1978 letter,I certainly understand,and in the sober light of day,go along with your opinion that the letter may be ''nothing at all'' [?],or ''gobbledygook'' from a hoaxer.

Its a ''tricky one'' to judge...and LE,of course,aren't going to help us out,with our curiosity.

But I sense that there is a ''richness'' to the crypticism...so,won't be thowing it out,with the bathwater,just yet....

Like Brenda Page,and possibly the 5 Bay Area victims...without trustworthy circumstancial evidence,Ms.Webster's case isn't looking great..but could still have a favourable outcome,on the back of a case,that is winnable.

Just as a ''completion'' of sorts,if anyone takes a further interest,in the murder of Brenda Page...

The 4:30 a.m ''departure'' spotted by the milkman,was,in all probability,''not'' the last of Ms.Page's perpetrator.

What the investigating police have put together,on a basis of belief,is......

The man ''disappeared'' for two hours....then turned up,at Aberdeen Railway Station,and boarded the early morning Aberdeen - Edinburgh train,departing 6:30 a.m.

The man had bought a one-way ticket,in advance,with cash.The journey time would have been expected to have been about two and a half hours.

Based on requests,by the police,for any passengers to come forward,with information....it is known,presumably with the man's accompanying duffle bag....in which carriage,the man was travelling.This carriage was identified,and sectioned off,at a later date...and dusted down for prints.

So,it appears that the man had intentions to return to a home,more than likely,92 miles away,in the vicinity of Edinburgh.In addition to checking the whole length of the railway line,in case the man had thrown the duffle bag,from the train...the police also checked on lockers,at Edinburgh's Waverly Railway Station.And further,sent divers into rivers,that the train had traversed,on the journey.

No duffle bag turned up.

What the investigating police came around to concluding,was that the man had merely travelled,as a passenger,as far as the first stop,on the journey,Stonehaven....just 20 minutes down the line.At Stonehaven Railway Station,the man entered its car park,where he had parked a motorcar.

In effect,the boarding of a train,with duffle bag,and full ticket paid,to Edinburgh....had all been ''for show''...a red herring.The man may have actually resided in Aberdeen,all along....but had the ''brass neck'',and took the risk,in order to convince the police,initially,that Edinburgh,or some other destinations,were his potential residency.

For,where had the man been,in the missing two hours,between 4:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. [?].Even in a large city,there was nowhere open to the public,at that time....and was not observed by anyone other than the milkman.

Officially then,the only physical evidence of Brenda Page's perpetrator was skin samples,under Ms.Page's fingernails.

But,do the police have the murder weapon [?].

And,if they do...have been concealing this information,for 41 years,exactly.

I doubt very much they have the murder weapon. Police speculated on a spanner, tyre lever or poker. However, the severity of her injuries suggests something closer to the latter two. If the killer entered through a window and lay in wait, it is likely he brought the weapon with him. Don't buy the burglar angle, because there is no need for that response. Most burglars will either scarper or just assault the person in order to escape. It's a big leap from common burglar to ruthless bludgeoning murderer. The first person you look at in these cases are the husband, or in her case violent ex partner. It says Dr Harrison was ruled out, but without knowing how the police came to this conclusion we may never know. He threatened her just before her murder, likely knew the layout of her flat, and now has emigrated to Holland. Do the math, as the Zodiac film stated.

Yes...there definitely seems to be ''rage'',Richard,as in ''spurned friend''.

Or,someone that thought they might become more than a friend [?].

Which,could well be the case,in Joan Webster's murder,also.

The ex-husband had troubled her,initially,on separation.But,apparently they were ''amicable'',at the time of her death.

Naturally,the element of Brenda being a ''moonlighting escort'' comes into play.It was extra money,at a time when academics were poorly paid.

The ''Edinburgh'' angle is quite interesting,since that is where her escort agent,operated.He would phone her up,with her ''appointments'',and she would split her fees,with him.

I think her agent,got more attention,from the police,than her ex-husband.It does seem that both were ''probably'' innocent.

Of course,this murder took place,half a mile from where I live...and there have been rumours,over the years.Not least that the police believe that they had ''the man on the train''....but ran out of ''wiggle room'',on the interviews.

The police just had ''no'' proof.

Brenda Page still has a sister,in her mid-eighties,living in Ipswich,Suffolk.

The sister has not been ''overly happy'' about the last four years...given the ''new hope'',that Mulholland seemed to suggest.

I agree with her,100%.

In fact,I am just about to e-mail the ''home based'' Detective Inspector,in charge of the Brenda Page case.Previously,I have dealt with a Detective Sergeant,hand-picked,by Mulholland.

Just to be sure that no one's wires are crossed [?].

And,with this July 19th 1978 letter,I will ''give mention'' of the ''other'' Detective Inspector [Toschi].

Put a cat among the pigeons [?].

It just occurred to me....

There was a Brenda Page related article,pubished by the Scottish Daily Express,last year,entitled : ''Was Dr.Page killed because of research into dangers of North Sea Oil Industry ? ''

A reference : Scottish Daily Express,July 7th 2018.

The ''premise'' on account that Brenda Page was working on a project,at the time,that specifically concerned dangers to deep sea divers,in the Oil Industry.

At the time,I told the Editor,Ben Borland,that the notion put forward,about holding the Oil Industry to account,for Brenda's murder,was ''poppycock''.

As it transpires,I offered him access to this July 19th 1978 letter...on the basis that he agree to print nothing,at all.

But,in my correspondence,outlining Brenda Page links,I had made mention of a politician,whom I did not name.

Thereafter,Borland badgered me,only for the politician's name....and I smelt a rat....called Ben Borland.

But interesting,perhaps,that Express Newspapers should cotton on to a diving link,to Brenda Page....in light of some of the content of this July 19th 1978 letter [?].

These ''home based'' policemen,are generally ''noble sorts'',and it would be naive of us,to forget that there is a certain ''military'' structure of ''obeying orders'',to the police,sometimes..that particular individuals,in the force,simply can't get past.

Though yesterday,I believe I gave the local Detective Inspector,something to consider..but with due respect,also.

It is entirely understandable that a ''re-investigation'' of about ''two years'' duration,as seems to be the case,in Brenda Page's murder,is what it can take,to re-cover all previous bases.

But,this still active ''enquiry'',is now ''four and a half years'',and counting....with nothing,officially,''on show''.

Every day,with the new hope given,LE inflicts pain on Brenda's sister.

This is close to a ''public disgrace''.

The friction tape that Zodiac is talking about is
Electroplating Tape that is conformable and abrasion-resistant vinyl tape with excellent resistance to most chemicals used in typical electroplating processes.

It is made by the M. Conley Company and has been in business since 1910.

There does seem to ''small margins'' of differences of possible definitions.Perhaps,in keeping with the Zodiac's duplicitous nature,generally [?].

Richard has alluded to oxide based cassette tape,for a possible definition,on the ''metallic tape''.But,on research,I seemed to get feedback on decorative tape for wrapping gifts,with the same ''metallic tape'' expression.

Just difficult,to call.

Just ''off topic'',for a moment....someone at zodiackiller.com appears to have acquired a photograph of a ''possible'' Donna Lass,circa 1985.

The general layout,of the lady's face,does seem quite convincing.

That would be ''something'',if it was found to be the case that Donna Lass,was actually still alive [?].

And there appears to be possible links to others connected,that suggests ''proof'',either way,might be something that could be achieved.
