A FIFTY-YEAR JOURNEY

10/9/2019

Picture
If the Zodiac Killer was a resident of Vallejo or its surrounding areas, then a murder in the northwest corner of San Francisco would be the perfect choice for a number of reasons. With a vehicle positioned alongside the Presidio Park, a murder such as the one perpetrated on Paul Stine on October 11th 1969, would provide an escape from the big city in a matter of minutes via Highway 101 and the Golden Gate Bridge. If anything goes awry, the murderer has the added advantage of a wooded park for momentary respite from responding law enforcement. This is the one confirmed Zodiac attack where the killer would direct the victim to the scene of the crime and thereby control the location of his murder. Dr. Kim Rossmo stated "The San Francisco murder differs significantly from the Zodiac's other crimes. Up to this point he was hunting in locations that had a good probability of containing his desired victims. Target selection was a function of area, not of an individual. However, it is unlikely the Zodiac was successful in all his searches; serial killers typically engage in extensive hunting activities, and for every attack there are many unsuccessful search attempts. In San Francisco, however, the Zodiac controlled the situation through his selection of victim type. The need for such control could be indicative of the distance the Zodiac had to travel to the crime site. Criminals who travel longer distances to offend are less likely to use uncertain target selection techniques". The notion of a killer who lived a matter of blocks from the intersection of Washington and Cherry, while not impossible, presents a greater risk in a number of ways. Committing such a daring murder in your own neighborhood, possibly minutes from your residence, and hoping everything goes to plan without being spotted, is not the ideal choice after previously committing three successful crimes with a comfortable buffer zone around your residence. Why now bring your murderous exploits to the doorstep of your home?
Picture
There is every chance this murder was planned meticulously, from the standpoint of a waiting vehicle and immediate separation from San Francisco. The trip sheet of Paul Stine had a destination of Washington and Maple, but the taxicab was discovered one block further west at the intersection of Washington and Cherry. The movement of the killer, backtracking east along Jackson Street towards the Jackson and Maple intersection, strongly indicated the initial murder site had been pencilled in for Washington and Maple. If we compare the last three Washington intersections of Cherry, Maple and Spruce, and swivel Google maps around each intersection, it is clearly noticeable that this is the best choice from the perspective of a killer keen to avoid eyewitnesses. This may have indicated a level of forethought and planning.

The Zodiac Killer was last seen running into Julius Khan playground by eyewitnesses at Spruce Street. Therefore, a murder committed at Washington and Maple would allow the Zodiac Killer a walking distance of just 86 meters northwards, before heading east along Jackson Street and out of sight from the crime scene. He now has 131 meters to Spruce Street and the seclusion of Presidio Park and Julius Khan playground. This allows him three phases of separation: [1] Up Maple and east on Jackson [2] Into the park to reach his vehicle, and [3] Into his vehicle and over the Golden Gate Bridge. However, something happened as the taxicab approached the intersection of Washington and Maple, that forced a change of plan and Paul Stine to travel one block further west to Washington and Cherry. The reason for this switch could be manyfold, such as pedestrians at the desired location or occupied vehicles in the vicinity of Washington and Maple. Despite all the best laid plans, the Zodiac Killer was still reliant on the timing of the taxicab approaching a populous area with any number of distractions.

In his letter to the San Francisco Chronicle two days after the murder, the Zodiac Killer began his communication "I am the murderer of the taxi driver over by Washington St + Maple St last night, to prove this here is a blood stained piece of his shirt". By his statement of "last night", it is clear he is preparing this letter on Sunday, October 12th 1969. The Zodiac Killer may have scouted the area in advance, highlighting Washington and Maple as his preferred kill site, but this doesn't necessarily mean he knew every street in the area by name. He could have checked a map the following day and noted that his murder occurred at Washington and Cherry, but it didn't appear that this was the case or of high priority to him.

The newspaper headlines the following day were obviously unaware that this was a Zodiac crime, when the San Francisco Chronicle wrote on October 12th "A Yellow Cab driver was found shot to death in his cab last night, the victim of an apparent robbery attempt in Presidio Heights". The article continued, stating "Police said three youngsters saw a scuffle near the cab, which was stopped on Washington Street, near Cherry Street, about 10 pm". Although this should have told the Zodiac Killer the location of the murder site, we are not in a position to determine what time he prepared and sealed this letter with respect to the San Francisco Chronicle publication. If he sealed it before the article's release, he may have been unfamiliar with the road he traveled up after leaving the taxicab. I don't suppose noting down the street name after the murder was high on his priority list. If the letter was prepared after the newspaper publication and he had read it, then writing "I am the murderer of the taxi driver over by Washington St + Maple St last night" could have been a deliberate choice by the Zodiac Killer, signifying that he had knowledge of the destination contained within the trip sheet. There is no reason to conclude his writing of  "by Washington St + Maple St" was evidence of his unfamiliarity with the general area he was operating.

Picture
The best chance of catching the Zodiac Killer is by re-examining all the evidence from his four crime scenes and hopefully extracting useable DNA from his communications mailed from 1969 to 1971. Unfortunately in recent years, despite the bloodstained shirt piece of the victim being mailed to the San Francisco Chronicle only two days after the murder, a select number of people still argue this murder could have been perpetrated by a hoaxer or group of nefarious individuals. So much so, this unknown third party decided that they should add a crime to the Zodiac portfolio that in no way resembled any previous Zodiac crimes. They were obviously aware of the murder and robbery attempt of Paul Stine, and thought they should gain access to the victim and surreptitiously tear a piece of bloodstained shirt from his body, before seeking out the trip sheet and noting the Washington and Maple destination. Or, they overheard Inspector David Toschi shouting out to all and sundry the contents of the trip sheet at the corner of Washington and Cherry, before sneaking onto the ambulance or creeping into the morgue unnoticed. Then finally, mimicking the Zodiac Killer's handwriting and threatening schoolchildren. The concept of creating well-thought-out counter narratives to the perceived narrative is a healthy one, but creating counter narratives for no other reason than you can, is counterproductive to ever pushing this case forward.

October 11th 2019 will mark the 50th anniversary of the murder of Paul Stine with little progress or resolution in sight. One day in the future the mask of the Zodiac Killer will hopefully be removed - the Zodiac circus will stop - and the traveling clowns will not be required to entertain the crowd anymore.

Z was very familiar with the Presidio Army Base, and short proximity to the GG Bridge. Z didnt decide his next escape route in 14 days, after LB stabbing of Bryan and Cecilia.
Presidio's Letterman Hospital was also a big military draw to this San Francisco Base.

Why didnt SFPD connect all the dots here ??

Zodiac was certainly familiar with the area and noted "Washington + Maple" without mentioning any other location by name in the vicinity. You can certainly be familiar with a particular region and negotiate it successfully without the need for knowing street names. In his detailed Bus Bomb Letter he described his movements in and around the park without elaborating further. The notion of a killer not a resident of Vallejo because he didn't mention Blue Rock Springs by name doesn't carry any weight. He only mentioned Presidio Park by "park" also - but we don't have the same standards applied here. It would be nice to get the whole picture from SFPD, because we have no released police reports subsequent to the initial Pelissetti report.

In answer to the "Sitting In the Front Seat" thread on Zodiac Killer Site forum, if we take a look at the photographs of the taxicab, particularly with the one taken from outside the driver side window of Stine laying across the seat, no A to Z map is noticeable. Just beyond his hips towards the camera is the midpoint of the bench seat. The centre of the front floorboard of the taxicab has a noticeable rise, so we know nobody could comfortably sit at the midpoint of the bench seat. There is no A to Z at the midpoint on the seat. The A to Z or street map was not present on the roadside while Paul Stine was photographed in the taxicab, but after his body was removed from the taxicab we see the A to Z on the roadside edge. This strongly indicates that the removal of Paul Stine's body and roadmap appearing are connected. In other words, the roadmap was underneath Paul Stine's body when the photographs were taken. This means that the roadmap was likely laying on the passenger seat during the taxicab journey to Washington and Cherry. If the roadmap was on the front passenger seat during the journey, it is extremely unlikely the Zodiac Killer entered the front and sat on top of it for 10-13 minutes. Paul Stine likely kept the roadmap to hand on the front passenger seat for convenience and any taxicab driver would have courteously removed it from the passenger seat had anybody ridden in the front. This strongly indicates (almost beyond doubt) that nobody rode in the front of Stine's cab that fateful night and certainly wasn't known to the victim. For the roadmap to suddenly appear on the roadside edge from one photograph to the next, indicates that the removal of the body and appearance of the roadmap were connected. Therefore, the roadmap had to have been lying under the victim in the crime scene photographs.

Anybody pushing for "the victims were known to one another" connection, will often bring up the claim that Inspector Armstrong told Carol (Paul Stine's sister) that the perpetrator rode in the front. There is no conceivable way Inspector Armstrong can conclude from the crime scene of where the Zodiac Killer sat throughout the journey. We know the kids only saw Zodiac in the front, but that is not evidence he didn't ride in the back. It's fairly obvious to secure a piece of Paul Stine's shirt, he has to realistically enter the front of the taxicab. The three teenagers did not see the taxicab pull up to the corner of Washington and Maple, so it could have been sitting near that corner one to several minutes before they looked out the window. This cannot be ascertained exactly, but it was likely a very brief time - likely 30 seconds or less.

Hi Richard,

Apologies for the delayed post to what once again is a great article. Question: In your picture demonstrating no map except under the victim, what is the black object on the seat behind Paul Stine? I have not seen this pic previously.

Thanks!

Small point to go over. The map was probably on the seat next to the driver of the cab. There would have been plenty of room on the bench seat for any passenger to occupy without sitting on the map. It was very common for anyone driving a sedan with a bench seat in those days to have items next to them on the seat while leaving ample room for any passengers to share the front .

Richard
10/11/2019 02:26:48 pm

In this photograph Tom I fail to see any Atlas or A to Z roadmap on the seat. Unless it was crammed right up next to his body while driving, and is just out of the shot in this photograph (which is unlikely) I can only assume it's likely under his body in the photograph. If it wasn't under his body in the following photograph and is actually just out of shot lying on the seat, how does it get dragged out when the body is extricated. We would have to assume it just floated out. The only people pushing for the front seat passenger story are people who have a suspect who they claim knew Stine. In other words, not impartial. The only way I see the roadmap atlas getting dragged out onto the roadside edge, is if it under Paul Stine's body in this photograph.

Wow 50 Years!

Appears we are heading toward Jack The Ripper never ending cold case status.

I guess it is time vs. advancements in forensic technology.

It seems very few cold cases have been solved thus far that stretch back to the 1960's, even with the advancement of modern of forensics.

I think GEDmatch might our best hope on the DNA front. Who lurks in the Zodiac Family Tree?

Richard

"Appears we are heading toward Jack The Ripper never ending cold case status". If the DNA testing doesn't discover any useable biological material on the letters or anything else, then it can officially be placed alongside the Whitechapel murders as practically unsolvable Shawn.

This is the most frustrating of Z’s crimes. There were several witnesses, a police encounter, an erroneous initial description and a search of the Park by a group of K-9 dogs. Yet, he still got away. Sometimes I think that if Zodiac ever stopped his crimes, or just the practice of immediately taking credit for them, it’s because he realized how close he came that night to being caught. There’s no doubt he was scared in that park that night.

Some other random thoughts:

Paul Stine was shot in the back of his ear, so there is little credence to the theories that Z sat next to him.

It’s possible that the fatal bullet was fired at Washington & Maple, but then Z jumped in the front seat to control the swirling cab to the nearest block (Cherry).

There were probably more patrol cops that eventually joined the crime scene that night other than the two pairs generally cited (Fouke/Zelms & Pelesitti/Peda). Therefore, it’s very possible that Z conversed with officers other than the ones often cited.

Z flagged down the cab in downtown San Francisco, so the likelihood of him knowing a random cab driver is very slim.

Proponents of suspect Larry Kane often point to the possibility that he could have simply walked over to the Letterman Hospital (inside Park Presidio) where he allegedly knew nurse Donna Lass, who herself would disappear around a year later.

There is so much about this particular case that we still don’t know. Exactly why was Xenophon Anthony mentioned as a suspect? How was he cleared? How credible was the 8-year old who named him? Did Zodiac keep walking away from the crime scene, or did he temporarily seek refuge at 3712 Jackson Street (per Fouke) or another address (per Graysmith).

There is no evidence that Z knew any of his victims. However, Mageau did mention that Darlene said it was “Richard”, who parked the car behind them before the shooting. Now, it could be that either Darlene or Mageau were wrong, or it could be a case of an ABC killer, where a serial killer knows one of the victims, but kills others to make them all look like random killings.

Recently, a jailed rapper said he was told that Z was a man named Lawrence Gill from Vallejo. Has anyone ever heard of him?

Lastly, RIP Paul Stine, who was cowardly shot in the back of his head and died alone on a dark San Francisco street at the age of 29 by a maniac who got away with several murders. Life’s not fair.

Richard
10/9/2019 10:28:54 am

If you believe any of the taxicab fingerprints were left by Zodiac, then Xenophon Anthony was ruled out by comparison with them. If not, he could still be considered relevant to the story. As for Zodiac knowing any victims, it's not impossible, but unlikely. Unfortunately, little credence can be given to any of Michael Mageau's statements or claims, and certainly understandable given the circumstances.

Presidio Heights was certainly a lost opportunity if we believe that "negro male adult" story. Otherwise, it was one big cock-up and cover-up. Regardless, it cost 50 years of searching.

As we approach this 50th anniversary of Paul Stine's murder, and the last of the officially recognized 4 Zodiac attacks, that resulted in the officially ''one and only'' Zodiac, having committed this criminal offense, thank you Richard, for marking it,with an article on the Presidio Heights attack.

I would just like to take this opportunity,of reminding readers,of the disparity offered,by the CA DOJ,in basic information, that appears available,on the officially ''one and only'' attacker, himself.

Lake Herman Road :

No information available.

Blue Rock Springs :

26 - 30 years old.
5ft 8in of height
200 pounds in weight

Lake Berryessa :

20 - 30 years old
5ft 10in - 6ft 2in of height
220 pounds in weight

Presidio Heights :

35 - 45 years old
5ft 10in of height
190 pounds in weight

A bit perplexing [?].And yet, officially,we are examining the same perpetrator,in all 4 cases.

To take an ''outlier'' Zodiac example, where some information has been offered,by either the FBI or MA DOJ....then,look no further, than the case of Joan Webster, who is presumed to have been murdered in 1981.

Ms.Webster was last seen, being accompanied by an unknown person, often referred to,as ''The Bearded Man'',out of Boston's Logan Airport. In 1990 the remains of Ms.Webster was discovered in woodland,at Hamilton,MA.

Ms.Webster's ex-sister-in-law,Eve Carson, has campaigned for ten years,to have Joan's case reviewed, officially, and has often struggled to ''prise'' any information of consequence, out of the authorities.

As a result,Ms.Carson has tended to ''look around'' the case, accusing a number of individuals,of having been responsible for the abduction and murder of Joan.

One such,has been State Trooper Lt.Andrew Palombo,who.for many years,was assigned Ms.Webster's case,as ongoing work.

In 1998,Lt.Palombo was killed in a motorcycle accident. He left a widowed wife and three daughters, behind. In death,Lt.Palombo received awards, postumously, for major drugs busts at Logan Airport, and was a pioneer,in breaking pedophile rings,in the early days of the internet.A recognized ''hero'',then.

With no blame attached to Eve Carson, whatsoever, and at one point......Ms.Carson started to publicly accuse the now deceased Lt.Palombo,of responsibility, for her sister-in-law's death. To the extent, where his loving family, started to complain.

Out of the blue,Ms.Carson received some basic ''official'' information,on ''The Bearded Man''.''The Bearded Man'' was now ''officially'' estimated to have been 5ft 8in in height.

State Trooper Lt.Andrew Palombo,was 6ft 4in.

After receiving the information,Eve Carson desisted from accusing the late Lt.Palombo,of murdering Joan.

Yes...5ft 8in is a huge difference to 6ft 4in.

So....when we examine the official information offered,on the 4 Zodiac attacks, that are, according to the authorities, the work of one man....what can we make of it ?

Not a great deal,unfortunately.

The multiple suspects possibility does make some sense, especially with regards to the Stine killing. After all, the composite sketch of the LBS suspect is different than the one in the Stine murder. Additionally, while the first three crimes involved young couples in remote areas, Stine was a grown man doing his job in the big city.

However, there are also things that point to a single gunman.

First, in BRS and LBS, the killer headed to a pay phone to taunt police shortly after the murders. I feel this points to the same guy. Additionally, the caller claimed responsibility for the Lake Herman Road killings after the BRS call. The proximity of Lake Herman Road and BRS as well as the similar victim profile also point to the same guy.

Now, San Francisco is a bit different in terms of location, victim profile and composite sketch. However, the letters mailed by Z to the newspapers in the summer of 1969, some of which contained information about the crimes not known to the public, were apparently written by the same man who sent a note to the Chronicle with a piece of Stine’s shirt (same handwriting). Again, we’re looking at a single killer.

Unless, however, we have a team of two killers working in concert, and one of the duos was writing the ciphers.

Certainly,some pertinent points made,Mo.

I agree with the authorities, that these 4 attacks, were the work of one man.

But,a point perhaps,is that the authorities hardly do themselves credible ''justice'',and we,the public,a ''service'',by offering us such conflicting basic information.

Rubislaw 32 link
10/11/2019 08:33:59 am

To make a point,that might appear obvious [ ? ].

The ''authorities'' have claimed, for many years, that the 4 attacks are the work of one person, who adopted the persona,'' The Zodiac ''.

How have they concluded this ?

In one word,I would suggest : '' Forensics ''.

And,if we are looking for the authorities' ''toe in the door''....then,look no further than : Paul Stine's bloodied shirt swatches.
