1986 AND 1987 LETTERS-ONE HAND

4/9/2020

The biggest problem with authenticating Zodiac communications in the Zodiac community is disagreement regarding the handwriting. Some will say the handwriting looks like Zodiac, while others will take the opposite stance. That is why it is crucial to go beyond the handwriting and analyze the wording, composition and structure of a communication. Recently I have been attempting to validate the October 28th 1987 Vallejo Times-Herald correspondence, opening with the lines "This the Zodiac speaking. I am crack proof. Tell herb caen that I am still here. I have always been here. Tell the blue pigs if want me I will be out driving around on Halloween in my death machine looking for some kiddies to run over". To do this, the 1987 envelope was compared with the July 31st 1969 envelope, previously unreleased in the public domain (unless you know better).

In this analysis we will attempt to bind the May 6th 1986 and October 28th 1987 letters to one author. That way, if we can prove the validity of one correspondence as being authored by Zodiac (such as the 1987 letter), we automatically validate the other. In the 'Los Angeles' letter from March 13th 1971, the Zodiac wrote "This is the Zodiac speaking. Like I have allways said, I am crack proof. If the Blue Meannies are evere going to catch me, they had best get off their fat asses + do something. Because the longer they fiddle + fart around, the more slaves I will collect for my after life". In the 1986 letter, the Zodiac wrote "This is the Zodiac speaking. I am still out here an crack proof. I want you to know about my latest slaves that I have collected about two weeks ago up by Sacramento Ca".

The author of the 1986 letter converted "I am crack proof" to "
I am still out here an crack proof". In other words, he just plagiarized the words from the 1971 letter, which doesn't prove he is the Zodiac Killer. Many letters and cards have been mailed to the newspapers between March 13th 1971 and May 6th 1986. I have noted at least thirteen communications linked to the Zodiac Killer between these dates, and not one used the term "crack proof". The first time this term was used, was in the October 5th 1970 pasted postcard, but it was written as "crackproof" without the separation. That means the author of the 1986 communication selected the words "crack proof" for the first time since March 13th 1971 (15 years later). The author also used a  'Flag Over Capitol' US stamp.

PictureClick image to enlarge
The 1986 letter was never released to the newspapers, yet in the following year, the author of the 1987 letter, not only used the similar 'Flag Over Capitol' US stamp, but again began his correspondence using the words "crack proof" in the separated format. Therefore, we have two consecutively released 'Zodiac' communications with the term "crack proof". If the 1987 author was different to the 1986 author, then he got extremely lucky mimicking the stamp selection and the opening two sentences, including the words "crack proof".

You will also notice that the author of both communications managed to prominently black out two words on each occasion. All four words prominently blacked out over both letters, almost certainly began with the letter T. What is certain, is that the prominently blacked out words were all followed by a word beginning with T. Those four words were They, The, Tell and Toschi. Three individual letters were blacked out over both communications also.

Additionally, the Los Angeles letter of March 13th 1971 stated "
If the Blue Meannies are evere going to catch me, they had best get off their fat asses + do something".  The 1986 letter author would mimic this narrative, by stating "The Blue Meannies almost caught me". But if the 1987 letter writer was not the author of the 1986 letter, he was again extremely fortunate to use wording similar to that contained in the 1986 letter: "Tell the blue pigs if want me I will be out driving around on Halloween in my death machine looking for some kiddies to run over. The pigs can catch me if they find me out there".

I think it is therefore reasonable to assert, that the 1986 and 1987 letters were written by the same hand, whether Zodiac or not.

This is a good idea to put these two letters together ( 1986 & 1987 ) ,Richard .

If we observe the Zodiac as a phenomenon , then we could describe these two letters , as a period of '' Spidery writing '' . Plus , the first Graysmith book coming out in 1986 , as a possible inspiration for copycats . But , these two letters appear to be influenced each , by a specific newsworthy crime , having taken place , which counts in favour of real Zodiac .

Then we can add the consideration of The New York Zodiac , Heriberto Seda who , was about 20 , at that 1986 / 1987 time , and known to have been inspired by Graysmith's first book (1986 ) . Seda had this similar spidery writing style , but no evidence that he possessed cipher skills . Seda started his physical attacks in 1990 , and was arrested in 1996 .

I firmly believe that the '' flag / totem poles '' cipher is real Zodiac , combined with Seda's writing surrounding it....an FBI '' job '' of combining real Zodiac ( cipher ) and New York Zodiac ( writing ) . But , the handwriting actually attributed to Seda is Seda , And anything that contains a cipher is real Zodiac .

So , here's the thing : These 1986 and 1987 letters , for handwriting , do have similarities with Seda's handwriting . But , would Seda have taken the trouble to use two California crimes , as obvious influences in these 1986 & 1987 letters ( ? ).....and, given Seda was living in New York , at the time .

When it comes down to it , one has to conclude that these 1986 & 1987 letters are probably by the same author , and that author , in order of probability is :

1 ) Real Zodiac

2 ) New York Zodiac - Heriberto Seda

3 ) FBI's Counter-Intelligence

If we take for fact the VTH 1969 envelope wasn't on public display, then the 1987 VTH envelope has a great chance to be Zodiac. It is extremely similar in handwriting, the exact wording, with no commas and full stops and the full VTH address. By connecting the 1987 letter with the 1986 letter, we effectively tie the the author of the July 1969 letter to the 1986 correspondence - and therefore the Zodiac as claiming the murders of Saechao and Saelee, probably inspired by the 1986 Robert Graysmith book release. That doesn't mean Zodiac committed the Saechao and Saelee murders, but he was at least claiming them.

Then we have to consider, if he didn't kill this couple, how did he come to find out about these under-reported murders. They received a little story in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, probably no coverage in the Chronicle or Examiner, but undoubtedly would have received coverage in Sacramento, which I would like to find. That means Zodiac could have accidentally stumbled across these murders along Highway 99, lived in Sacramento, or committed the murders himself. I go for 2, 3 and 1 in that order. But the possibility exists we could have a Zodiac killing a couple in Sacramento, while resident there. I don't fit Heriberto Seda into any of these communications, unless we conclude he was a 2-year-old baby writing the July 31st 1969 Vallejo Times-Herald letter. Although he was born on July 31st 1967 - go figure. I am fairly confident that Zodiac was the author of the 1986 and 1987 letters, while Seda was probably still squeezing his zits and dating girls. I can't comment on Seda's ciphers and letters, other than I've looked at them with passing interest. I used to believe Zodiac died in early the early 1970s, and now look. He may have been bashing people over the head with his Zimmer frame as late as 2001. What a strange turarnound - you live and learn Rubislaw.

In terms of FBI involvement in massaging and manipulating the letters, it is effectively unprovable one way or another, which is why I take the letters at face value. Could they have had a hand in such nefarious activity - yes - but first you have to answer the why, then once you have done that, provide the evidence. It's a rabbit hole with no end. The letters are tangible pieces of evidence and provide us with so much information if we are prepared to look. They won't likely tell us who the killer is, but by studying the 2001, 1990, 1987 and 1986 communications we can probably eliminate many of the high profile suspects once and for all, such as Allen, Kaczynski and Sullivan for starters.

Yes , Richard I pretty much go along with what you say . Just to add that I feel confident that the Zodiac had nothing to do with the Highway 99 murders which , appears to be a clear cut case of extreme road rage . Bur did influence the 1986 letter .

It's just that these two letters look closest to Seda's handwriting , with Graysmith's book a considered pivotal moment , in Seda's life .

My personal suspicions are that the Zodiac was living and working overseas , at this time . But , his work description allowed him short visits , to places like Sacramento , Los Angeles and San Francisco .

So ,and on that basis , it might be a good idea , if anyone takes interest , to look into these newspaper summary newspapers , that gave the news for a week , or even a month ( ? ) .

An alternative explanation is the '' traditional '' library visits that the Zodiac is presumed to have made , and on a very regular basis . A good place , almost always , to catch up on local news , in particular .

Let us assume for a moment Zodiac lived in Santa Cruz in 1986 and read about the Saechao and Saelee murders in the Santa Cruz Sentinel. Buoyed by the recent Zodiac book of Graysmith, he fires off the May 6th 1986 letter when he reads of a crime eerily similar to his BRS attack. Then a year later he reads about the children being mowed down by a car in San Jose. Just over a month before the arrival of this the 1987 letter, on September 12th 1987, Jose Santo Bugarin (26) and Rodolfo Alvaro (31) were traveling on King Road, San Jose, California when their car slammed into four children playing on the front lawn of a residence, killing three and injuring one. The driver then backed over the bodies and left the scene. Both were apprehended a short time later. "Bugarin was arrested on three counts of second-degree murder. Alvaro also was arrested on murder charges".

San Jose borders Santa Cruz, and why he may have had knowledge of these little reported crimes. This isn't the strongest analogy, but worth investigating until the proverbial brick wall shuts us down. I don't think Zodiac likely lived in this region, but we are familiar with his San Jose connection right back to the Snoozy & Furlong murders in the August of 1969.

Indeed , it's the Highway 99 murders and King Road tragedies , as influencing news stories , that seem to be the '' clinchers '' that the 1986 & 1987 letters are authentic Zodiac .

A copycat artists more than likely , wouldn't have considered these '' invisible touches '' ,Much of what the Zodiac conveys is below the surface .

Rubislaw 32 link

'' Tell Herb Caen I am still here . I have always been here . ''

Zodiac's obvious desire to convey that the Californian spirit of him lives on , in California .

But , probably the biggest lie that the Zodiac ever told .

Below is a link to my new take on the Halloween Card as an overlay with the map of Bay Area. Would like to get thoughts on this, thanks.

I'd like to get as many people to review my overlay of the Halloween Card and the 1st confirmed Zodiac murder at Blue Rock Springs.

http://www.zodiackillersite.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=4745

There were several things I noticed about the skeleton on the inside of the card;
1) The feet positioned in a triangle is just bizarre, I certainly think it's a clue to either triangles or a Mountain. I've never seen a skeleton with feet positioned like this.

2) One of the "eyes", (which I believe are disguised as "C's", as in Clues is exactly similar to the Columbus Parkway that cuts through Blue Rock Springs.

3) The skeleton reminded me of the outline of the SF Bay. When I turned the skeleton upside down, the pelvis fit in the North Bay and the upper body fit in the East Bay. Even the leg bones mimicked the Richmond Bridge and GG Bridge.

4) both hands are somewhat hanging from the San Mateo Bridge "posts" at Hayward and San Mateo.

I've mapped the "eyes" to known Z sites, Blue Rock Springs, LHR, even an area that (thanks to Sandy for pointing out) potentially Kathleen Johns was driving around.

One of the "eyes" is also positioned near the Antioch Bridge. Sandy also mentioned a Nurse committing "suicide" from the Bridge sometime between (1969-1970).

Could Zodiac have been giving clues to his 13 sites?

Is the angle that I have the Halloween Card over-layed have the "O' in Boo even close to be set to Mag. North?

I will abstain from any detailed analysis Toots, because obviously my Mount Diablo code/Ingleside analysis, plus my thoughts on the Halloween card differ to your suggestion. They can't possibly both coexist as the answer. Therefore I will gracefully bow out and let others comment.

Information for anyone interested in the scenario of the Zodiac , as an overseas resident and worker , who might make occasional visits to California , in particular .

An inference being that the Zodiac may have picked up news stories which , ordinarily might be considered of a more local nature , but while he resided overseas.

Homing in on the ones with greatest circulation , in the international market place :

International Herald Tribune - 1967 - 2002

The Wall Street Journal Asia - 1976 - present

The Wall Street Journal Europe - 1983 - 2017

It appears , from the ( albeit limited ) research that , if the Zodiac was , in the main , an overseas resident after the Bay area era of terror , then by far , the greatest likelihood of a newspaper that might supply him with news stories , including ones from California , would be :

The International Herald Tribune ( 1967 - 2002 )

Thanks for the extra information Rubislaw. He may very well have been in Sacramento all the time? Notice the "I want you to know about my latest slaves that I have collected about two weeks ago up BY Sacramento Ca".

"I am the murderer of the taxi driver over BY Washington St + Maple St last night".

No shirt piece unfortunately.

Where did the Zodiac go, you ask?

To the East Coast, and specifically traveled to Virginia area for the late 1980's Colonial Parkway Murders. Too many coincidences there regarding lover's lane, Lee middle names, (Sandy Lee Hailey, David Lee Knobling), Navy grads, Shenandoah National Park trails, etc.

Today marks the April 10th anniversary of one of the Colonial Parkway crimes.

Rubislaw 32 link

In a general sense , i would tend to agree with you Toots .

It is probable that the Zodiac employed the expression '' all over '' , albeit in probable reference to California .

'' All over '' , like '' By '' , is another predominant Americanism , in geographic description , and I think we could well be talking '' America '' , if not '' all over '' the world .

I find it interesting that a few , more with ruminations about murders committed before the Bay area era , believe that the Zodiac moved '' around '' California .I don't necessarily see that precisely in that way .
I believe that the Zodiac only appeared to move around California...but , was actually leaving California on a regular basis , only to return to California , but in a different part . And , in a general sense , this has baffled criminologists who , have attempted to map the Zodiac's movements , over time .

Rubislaw 32 link
4/12/2020 02:33:26 am

Just on the point of my suggesting that the '' flag / totem poles '' cipher , solved by the FBI , with its writing surround and a misquote of Edgar Allan Poe is a '' fixed job '' by the FBI , in how it has been presented :

I believe that the cipher has been reduced in scale to '' half size '' , with the writing ( Seda's ) increased in scale to twice size .

Why might the FBI do this ?

I believe it is to infer that Seda might have acquired cipher skills...or that we , the public as an interested party , might believe that anything in writing , is the work of the real Zodiac .

But , why this possible deliberate cross-over of confusion , created by the FBI ?

Well...sometimes the FBI require answers or a helping hand from the public , without specifying what assistance , specifically , they require .So...they feed an actual ambiguous piece of information to , either weed out the kooks , from the genuine suggestions.....or , to make it easy for themselves , to sort out the potentially helpful information put forward , from information that can be immediately thrown in the trash can .

An example :

In the the case of the murder of BBC presenter , Jill Dando , the investigating police issued a public message that they wished anyone to come forward , on information about a Land Rover that had been spotted , on a number of occasions apparently stalking the largely unoccupied flat , belonging to Miss Dando , in the weeks leading up to her murder .

One of the suspects in her case , came forward with a claim that he had experienced , what he believed to be a similar experience of being stalked by a Land Rover .

The truth of the matter was , that the police had made up the story of the Land Rover , for a specific reason , known only to themselves...but, all part of their investigative work .

So , it is possible that the FBI's counter-intelligence unit have played around with some of the Zodiac's correspondence , for purposes known only for themselves....and we , as sleuths , are merely observing an aspect of police investigation , for which we are not privy to know the reason why .

Richard

I have contacted the Vallejo Times-Herald and offered 20 dollars to a charity of their choice to send me a clearer image of the 1987 envelope. I hold out little hope, but if you don't try you'll never get.

Rubislaw 32 link
4/13/2020 12:20:19 pm

Nice one , Richard , one can but try ( ? ) .

Here's the thing....I was last in contact with the Vallejo Times-Herald , in 2014 . From what transpired , I realised that , like the SF Chronicle , they are largely in the CA DOJ / FBI 's pockets , on agreements related to the Zodiac case . Though , not so much on a '' double scratch '' basis , as Hearst Corporation owned SF Chronicle .

That is why I am bypassing them with old information , now .

So , although I don't hold out much hope for your request , I would be confident that your request will be passed on , as information to the CA DOJ / FBI .

The more '' digs '' at the authorities over the Zodiac case , the better.
