Thirteen and one half years after the last confirmed correspondence of the Zodiac killer in the form of the Exorcist Letter, a letter was received by the Vallejo Times-Herald on Wednesday October 28th 1987, to reignite the debate on whether this particular letter or indeed the 1986 letter, following on from the string of dubious material received since January 29th 1974 are in fact authentic. Or were they now a tired and pathetic attempt by the original killer to keep the story alive in the public eye. Despite this case being prominent for most amateur sleuths, inevitably the press coverage moved on.
The SLA Letter, Citizen Card, Red Phantom Letter and the 1978 'I am back' Letter were on the face of it lazy scribblings, clearly formulated without the passion the author had seemingly dedicated to his previous correspondence. This letter appears to have made no inroads into convincing to the otherwise, beginning with almost the same three lines as the 1978 Letter, other than 'Tell herb caen that I am still here' as opposed to 'Tell herb caen I am here' and the use of the words crack proof once more. It appears as though the author is using the 1978 Letter as a template for copying the handwriting, which after an nine year hiatus is actually too close by comparison to the 1978 Letter, shedding doubt on its authenticity as Zodiac material. Most individuals handwriting changes moderately over time. The author also appears to be trawling through old correspondence for his current material, indicating forced content.
