TWO MESSAGES IN 1978 STATING "I AM BACK"

3/8/2025

Picture
Although the Zodiac Killer mailed at least four communications in 1971 and one in 1973, it appeared as though his contact with the newspapers dried up after the Exorcist letter on January 29th 1974. No other confirmed communications have been verified between 1974 and 1978, with the newspaper coverage of the Zodiac Killer thinning out during this period. That was until the four year anniversary of the Exorcist letter, when Tim Reiterman, a San Francisco Examiner reporter, announced on Sunday, January 29th 1978 in the San Francisco Chronicle that the following day he would be taking a second look at the Zodiac Killer mystery (see right image).

The following day, January 30th 1978, Tim Reiterman probably wrote one of the longest and most extensive newspaper articles on the Zodiac Killer in history (in part shown below), including a comprehensive interview with Inspector David Toschi of SFPD, the lone investigator on the Zodiac case. There is no way this San Francisco Examiner article escaped the attention of the Zodiac Killer - and could be argued was the reason he addressed David Toschi three months later when he mailed the April 24th 1978 "I am back with you" letter, writing "This is the Zodiac speaking I am back with you. Tell herb caen I am here, I have always been here. That city pig toschi is good - but I am smarter and better he will get tired then leave me alone. I am waiting for a good movie about me. who will play me. I am now in control of all things".

However, six weeks after this January 30th 1978 newspaper article by Tim Reiterman, on March 13th 1978, somebody claiming to be the Zodiac Killer telephoned a man in the Mission District and used language that pre-empted the wording on the April 24th 1978 letter, announcing over the phone "This is the Zodiac. Tell the press that I am back in San Francisco". The phrase of "Tell the press that I am back in San Francisco" would become "I am back with you. Tell herb caen I am here" just 42 days later. To my knowledge, this phone call wasn't released into the newspapers. Things got interesting when the name "Reiterman" appeared only once in the San Francisco directory in 1977 and 1978, with an address of 805 Hampshire Street in the Mission District of San Francisco. This seemed like it could be the answer, but the forenames were Frank and Katherine in 1978, and the initials were M F in 1977. To be clear, Frank Reiteman was the listed resident in both years, not Tim Reiterman of the San Francisco Examiner.

PictureInspector David Toschi
We don't know for certain the identity of the individual who rang the "man in the Mission District" on March 13th 1978, but the fact the telephone caller requested that the man "Tell the press", could indicate that this man had industry connections enabling him to pass the message on to the newspapers  Something that Tim Reiterman could have done had he been the individual in question. If the Zodiac Killer made this phone call, it is unlikely he was going to telephone a random member of the public, he was going to contact somebody who had the capability to pass on his message to the newspapers and be taken seriously, such as an editor or reporter. Other possibilties could be somebody previously connected to the case, a law enforcement officer, or a celebrity who would make the story newsworthy.

After reading the comprehensive newspaper article by Tim Reiterman on January 30th 1978 interviewing David Toschi, would it be surprising if the Zodiac Killer had attempted to send two similarly phrased messages such as the ones on March 13th 1978 and April 24th 1978 that would involve Tim Reiterman and David Toschi respectively. A newspaper reporter and a detective that Zodiac likely knew interacted with each other at the end of January. This newspaper article must have convinced the Zodiac Killer that his arch nemesis "pig toschi" was good, despite the fact he couldn't resist the opportunity to remind everybody that he was "smarter and better".

PictureSan Jose Mercury, September 13th 1976
According to the later research of Robert Graysnith in his 1986 book "Zodiac", he stated that David Toschi looked over the case of the suspicious phone call in 1978, therefore it is highly unlikely after reading the transcript of the message, he would then effectively plagiarize the wording and insert it into the April 24th 1978 letter in a slightly different format to commit a hoax. Especially if there was a limited number of people aware of the Mission District case.

The name "Reiterman" is considered a very uncommon surname, likely only found in small pockets of populations, primarily due to its unique combination of elements and potential origin as a variation of the German surname "Reiter" which itself isn't particularly widespread. Did the Zodiac Killer make a mistake and ring the address at 805 Hampshire Street in the Mission District believing it to be the household of Tim Reiterman, despite his name not being listed as the owner? When a male voice answered did he just deliver his simple message of "This is the Zodiac. Tell the press that I am back in San Francisco", and then hang up?

Tim Reiterman seemed the most logical recipient of the phone call on March 13th 1978 because of its similarity in language to the message on April 24th 1974, and his recent interview with David Toschi. However, we could be looking for an entirely different target for the "Zodiac Killer" phone call. So if you have knowledge of any high profile candidates and can prove they lived in the Mission District in 1978, please leave your suggestions in comments. This can be another mystery solved with your help.

It's certainly not out of the question Johnny, but not necessary in respect to the Mission District phone call = only that the person he called had the ability to pass on the message, or have status enough for the cops to even bother to to turn up. There is a good chance the call was made from the Taraval District on the west side of San Francisco, which I will cover in the next article.

Another great nugget @SirRichard.

Always such a pleasure to learn about these stories. They add tremendous color to the understanding of the case.

What I notice, is a behavior. One that I believe you are alluding to, that this perpetrator exhibits, and seems to also be a theme in a few of the recent articles you have written.

He seems to monitor popular channels. Channels relevant to him, where he could be mentioned, would be mentioned as either the primary, or a tangential person of interest.

He reaches out, sometimes lashes out, attempting to taunt, terrorize, but always seeking attention.

Does this behavior sound similar?

It should. It's a trait of malignant narcissism. Meaning any person who behaves in this manner, may be a malignant mind, requiring medical intervention. A prescription, or worse.

The behavior is not hard to recognize. Luckily for us, if it's a pattern that we can recognize, then we can start to look for it in other areas where it may express itself.

Also in other people ;-)

Yes Ed, many of the common stories in the Zodiac case have been thrashed to death, and I much prefer these fringe stories where there is little information and have for the most part not been explored. There could be a golden nugget in one of these instances. If he is responsible for outliers such as the phone call, it shows what lengths this guy will do to receive attention, even if he wasn't killing for it. After his canonical attacks he tended to target more high profile people, knowing that these would carry more gravitas and likely get his letters and phone calls taken more seriously. Maybe that's why he dropped "toschi" into the 1978 letter. If the 1978 letter hadn't mentioned Inspector David Toschi, I doubt we'd have ever seen this letter. That is probably why he quoted "The Exorcist" in 1974, to ride the wave of the media.

Richard

Probably tomorrow I'll release another fringe story Ed.

Dearest Richard,

I perhaps should not have said "fringe", as that does not do justice to what these stories provide.

I should have used the word "flourishes". As that's what they provide.

These "stories" or "articles" that you provide, help to "fill in" the picture. The pieces of the puzzle, if you will. They help us all to understand what this person could have been thinking, based on these actions, that may or may not have been him.

They are tremendously relevant, and important for that reason.

If we start to see a pattern that arises from all of these "activities", our chances increase in understanding what was the "reasoning" for the activities.

They improve our chances to catch him ;-)

Rich, I don't know how you find all those things so fast, but again, exceptional work! Would it be technically easy and possible for you to make that newspaper article acessable for download? It is more then just one page, right.

Again, bravo, this is the most interesting TZC website ever!

I did several snapshots. To access the full article visit my homepage and click the little picture "ZODIAC FBI FILES". Select Zodiac Killer part 5 and scroll down to page 40. The whole newspaper article is there Zodcom.

how many newspaper articles (approx) would there be stored in total?

Richard
3/8/2025 03:43:32 pm

Can you elaborate Zodcom. Do you mean how many Zodiac newspaper articles have been stored in the entirety of the case?

ZODCOM
3/8/2025 04:18:56 pm

We assumed, but didn't check before, you would get your "vintage newspaper articles" from https://www.newspapers.com/
We further assumed those newspapers.com members, like you, would be able to download pages they need for their work to their own PC.

Then I assumed (again, stupid me not checking by myself:) you would cut around through the originals, take what you need, create your own webpage with it and keep the original in your own archive. That's why I asked if I can download the original newspaper clips, assuming you would store them somewhere.

That Dear Editor thing was a joker from my side, a ZODCOM member, could have even be me myself:) - harmless dark joke nobody wanted to mess with you. You understood that immediately it came from us. We consider you friendly, especially since all that what went on yesterday with "Pedro".

Now, let me ask again in another way:)

Dear Sir Richard, do you store any newspaper articles you would use for your webpages, and that has to be a ton, on your own webspace and not some FBI servers?

Richard
3/8/2025 11:23:59 pm

Firstly Zodcom, I don't have access to newspapers.com anymore. I did for about one year, but that expired. Jibberjabber kindly gave me access to genealogy bank, another newspaper archive, which is good but not as extensive as newspapers.com. Once I find an interesting article I clip it out and download it, before uploading it to my site. However, I periodically delete those newspaper files on my computer to free up space. So I have no newspaper stories archived on my computer.or anywhere else. Only what you can find on my articles.

I see, Rich. Thanks for the link collection, i had them already searched. The newspaper articles which you use to create your pages, those would have been far more interesting to us. I was almost 100% certain you would store "the originals" seperately, as they were, without any cutting. Anyway, amazing excavations, like always!

So, we're shaping up nicely for 1978, Richard ?

Jan 1978: I'm the Hillside Strangler, and I have an accomplice.

April 1978: I'm smarter than Toschi, and I am in control.

May 1978: You hid my claim for Reet Jurvetson, and I'll threaten who I want.

July 1978: I'm claiming for Brenda Page, and Toschi might come across me if investigating stolen cheap jewelry. And I'll say it again - I am in control.

My assigned liaison officer was a Det Sgt xxxx xxxxxx, seconded to the Brenda Page murder re-investigation (Feb 27th 2015). I badgered him at least three times about the Scotch Tape letter. He wouldn't budge an answer.

I would suggest that the Zodiac was ''back'' during that first half of 1978. But, in the Los Angeles vicinity. The March 13th phone call and subsequent April 24th letter - sold a lie inferring San Francisco, when he was probably only up for a day or two from Los Angeles.

Rubislaw32 link
3/8/2025 08:44:22 pm

Where on earth had the Zodiac been ?

Well, in his May 2nd Channel 9 letter, he reckoned that Pat Boone's talents were ''an obscenity to the rest of the world ! ''. Presumably, he'd been out to the rest of the world, to gain knowledge of this nugget of information.

Actually, Pat Boone didn't register much internationally - except for one country where he had been as big as in the USA:

The UK.

Richard
3/8/2025 11:29:31 pm

Absolutely Rubi, and I believe that the ones you've listed in the first half of 1978 are only the tip of the iceberg. I highly doubt Zodiac went from 1974 to 1978 with his thumb up his arse. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more from Los Angeles.

Rubislaw32 link
3/9/2025 12:58:19 am

Right or wrong, Richard, I feel that Los Angeles was his ''primary home'' - but he traveled away a lot, because of the nature of his work - at that time. So, the ''I'm back'' period, appears to have been duration of six months (Jan '78 - July '78), to date.

It is also worth considering that TomV has in the past stated that one of the two know mailing locations of Zodiac letters was 23rd and Taraval.

JIbberjabber
3/9/2025 07:46:32 am

Interesting Cragle, do we know which letter was posted from 23rd and Tarvel? I have just had a look on GOOGLE maps and there are some interesting name places within metres of that place, saint CECILIA church, ABRAHAM LINCOLN (one of the stamps Z used) school, PINE lake park (peek through the Pines card).

Has to be zynchronicity, how would Zodiac know the main service would identify which mail box had been used? interesting though.

Do you know what the other known mailing location was, and how they were known?
