THE RIPPER LETTERS FROM 1966

3/6/2025

Picture
In previous articles I attempted to show the common methodology employed by the Zodiac Killer and the Riverside author of the Confession letter through the use of historical microfiche searches, such as "man is the most dangerous animal of all" from 1932 (The Most Dangerous Game), and "it was about time for her to die" from 1888 (Jack the Ripper). This unusual approach possibly being the product of one mind and one author. The murderer of Cheri Jo Bates and the typist of the Confession letter on November 29th 1966 (if one person) would have been somebody who savagely cut the throat of Cheri Jo Bates seven times. The author of the letter stated that they would "cut off her female parts and deposit them for the whole city to see", had "finished the job out cutting her throat", threatened that he was "stalking your girls now", and possibly used a phrase from "The Sturdy Beggar" newspaper article from 1888 of "it was about time for her to die". A phrase (other than the reporting of the Confession letter) was only found in one publication in 334 years. The notion that the murderer of Cheri Jo Bates was influenced by "Jack the Ripper" now didn't seem so fanciful. So I took a look at the media events in 1966.

There was some standard fare, such as the release of the movie "A Study in Terror", with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson on the trail of Jack the Ripper in Whitechapel. Although a 1965 release in the United Kingdom, it made its American debut on August 10th 1966 in the USA, about eleven weeks before the murder of Cheri Jo Bates. "A Study in Terror" was also made into a book in 1966, featuring the fictional detective Ellery Queen. However, 1966 became a significant year in the story of Jack the Ripper, when long lost Ripper letters were released into the public domain by Dr. Francis Camps, Britain's leadng murder pathologist. Letters that hadn't seen the light of day for nearly 80 years, and told of a sender who promised that "The next job I do I shall clip the lady's ears off and send them to the police" (corrected for spelling).

The Jack the Ripper letters were unearthed by a man sent to search through old files in a London hospital, who turned them over to Dr. Francis Camps. Understanding their historical value he first published them in the London Hospital Gazette, before they were more widely circulated in the public domain. Numerous newspapers throughout America carried the message of the Jack the Ripper letters being published, so it is noteworthy that the Confession letter author typed "I then finished the job out cutting her throat. I am not sick. I am insane. But that will not stop the game. This letter should be published for all to read it. It just might save that girl in the alley. But that's up to you. It will be on your conscience. Not mine. Yes I did make that call to you also. It was just a warning". Confessions to murders and warnings ever present in the released Ripper letters. On September 25th 1888 a letter addressed to the police commissioner stated that "You will soon hear of me and my funny little games", A game that the Confession letter author promised would not stop.

Were the Riverside Desktop Poem, the Confession letter and Bates' letters the product of mimicry from a disturbed mind, who wanted to replicate the terror of Whitechapel's Jack the Ripper to the streets of Riverside, warning the residents to "
Keep your sisters, daughters and wives off the streets and alleys", and that they would "cut off female parts and deposit them for the whole city to see".

The final trigger may have been
The Press newspaper on November 24th 1966, which compared the abduction of a 19-year-old girl to that of Cheri Jo Bates, five days before the Confession letter arrived. The unknown perpetrator in that case, after the young woman declined an offer of a ride in his vehicle, remarked  "Well, after all, I'm not Jack the Ripper". How much influence, if any, did the release of numerous Jack the Ripper letters and postcards in 1966 have on the Confession letter author - along with the accompanying Riverside Desktop Poem and Bates' letters? This was a momentous year for many Ripper enthusiasts, who could now cast their eyes over these grizzly new published communications. But was the Riverside author, possibly responsible for all three offerings in 1966, one of them? A killer who may have taken his "dangerous game" to the unsuspecting residents of the Bay Area of northern California.

If Zodiac was a copycat of Ripper he might have lost the will to live his own life. Maybe if he was an somewhat older killer as we often assume, he had begun to get tired of just about everything, and now he hide himself behind the Ripper to get the voices out of his own head.

Richard
3/6/2025 02:28:07 am

I doubt the Zodiac Killer lost the will to live being a narcissist who lived through his letters. Like us all Johnny, the Zodiac was shaped through his life experiences and what was fed to him through the media. With a propensity for murder, it wouldn't be surprising if he was influenced by previous murderers, just like you may be influenced by the "achievments" of individuals in interests that you like. I would say, that if Zodiac was influenced by Jack the Ripper, it was predominantly through his writings over the killings. We don't know if any of the Jack the Ripper letters and postcards were written by the actual killer, but 100s, if not thousands were sent in his name. So the fact that the Zodiac Killer sent 30+ communications - and possibly dozens more - could suggest he wanted the notoriety of the Whitechapel murderer. Not many killers are connected to so many letters, but Zodiac and Jack the Ripper certainly head that list. Yours Truly, Richard.

Dearest Richard,

Didn't the Atlanta child murderer write a letter with wording similar to -- I use to stalk your girls, I'm hunting your children now?

Forgive me if you've already made this possible link, I'm sure.

Richard
3/6/2025 07:13:40 am

That's right Ed. Here is the full transcript:
"Hello its me. Haven't you people figured out who is killing these little people yet. I'll give you a hint, I used to be in San Francisco. I used to stalk women, but I like to kill children now. At all my victims bodies I have left certain clues, but I guess it's too much for you Rebels to handle. So I guess I'll have to tell you. I'll (to) kill children because they are so easy to "pick off: Buy the way, if you still have letters from the other murders, I am not writing in the same hand writing".

Richard
3/6/2025 07:21:37 am

The letter came 3 weeks after the discovery of missing child Patrick Baltazar (11) whose body was found dumped adjacent to a parking lot on February 13th 1981, A newspaper article on February 22nd 1981 stated "police were working on the assumption that more than one person was involved in the crimes, but they have also found certain clues linking some of the murders. "It's the old Oliver Twist story" said Felton. "If you're out there and available, trouble will find you". The author of the Atlanta letter, writing "At all my victims bodies I have left certain clues".

I did some work on it ages ago. Can't remember everything I found, but here is a little bit including a tape recording.

@SirRichard,

@Johnny,

This is an interesting point of view.

I speak about intelligence quite a bit. I bring it up here, because it informs my thinking about this case, and gives insight into what I think might be the profile of this person, and how their mind might work.

Losing the will to live, would indicate something I mentioned previously. Seeing no way out, and deciding to end it.

One could almost say, this is a type of game. Mental fortitude of course would be needed, but this could possibly be the way a type of mind would work.

Remember my discussion on abnormal minds?

I'm more convinced than ever, that an understanding of how Artificial Intelligence will work in the near future, will help it's original mission, which was to try to interpret and mirror, how the brain/mind works. How it evolves.

The mind (The mental processes as opposed to the physical brain) evolves rapidly in environments where it plays games. I've recently been fascinated by this. I've become a sort of evangelist about it, and believe it has helped me to see the world in a remarkably different way.

Everything is a game.

A powerful mind, will almost seek to "gamify" things. This is literally tested out, and proved in the real world. It is now been settled and accepted science, in practice right now in the real world. These ChatGPT types, and other AI systems, they're now built in this manner.

Meaning, one type of mind is sat down and watched as to how it grows -- without games. Another is sat down and watched, but is trained with a partner that plays games with it.

The AI that is trained, in a gaming situation, with an adversary, outpaces the AI that does not have this General Adversarial relationship with anyone.

In other words, the mind that plays games advances rapidly in almost every detectable construct we have for development. Psychological development. Meaning real scientific detection processes as defined by decades of brain and mind research, and psychology.

What I'm saying is, a lesser mind, might have lost the will to live. A more powerful mind -- one we would define as laypeople, as "having a high IQ", would possibly not lose the will to live. That mind would have learned a new "Game", or perhaps left this gaming table, and simple went to another "Game". One of their own choosing, or creation possibly.

I say this, to try to help people see and understand. If they are limited in their own ability to conceptualize these types of things with a more powerful mind, they might be able to see where they fall short, or in some cases are outclassed by a more powerful mind, that is playing different games than they can conceive of.

Zodiac, would have been playing an imaginary game, against a long deceased player --JTR. Yet, that would have been the only person capable of playing against him. So he may have done just that. Measuring himself against one of the "Greats", may have been a motivating factor, for a mind such as his.

You can then look at how he almost was seeking another player, to play against. Like "That citi pig Toschi". Who he outclassed, and some might even say, got him "taken off" the board.

That's one theory that I find interesting as a possibility.

Johnny
3/6/2025 07:39:07 am

Yes, because the narcissism you both talk about is all empty in the end i guess. And yes Ed, in theory the brainier type of person should have more alternatives to continue his life with.

But for me i dont know, i just wrote what could be, but it was a little to much Jekyll&Hyde and Richard did good to explain it away.

EdEdwardsCiphers link
3/6/2025 09:05:24 am

@Johnny,

Jekyll & Hyde is a fine framework. I believe it's both relevant and makes sense.

What I'm trying to illustrate, and it's not EZ, may be helpful if I try to use a chess analogy.

Playing chess, has long been tied to brainpower, mind power.

Chess aficionados all know several stories of prodigies that impress with not only their acumen, but sometimes these chess prodigies perform demonstrations.

The most spectacular types of these demonstrations, are when they play multiple people at the same time.

This is the concept I'm speaking of:

One mind, a powerful mind, can extrapolate and play multiple games of chess, all at the same time. With different people, who are at their full capacity only playing one game.

While the prodigious player, is able to keep all of the different games, and their pieces in mind as they walk around a room full of players, you can see on the regular players faces, they are deep in calculation. Their field of view wholly taken in by the single board. This is their whole world. They may have a vague sense of what's happening around them, but their full focus, full mental potential is locked onto the plane of the board, so to speak.

Contrast this, with someone who is such a powerful processor of these calculations, and can keep them in mind, and play them all at once, and still be faster than each individual player.

This is somewhat akin to modern computing, and parallel processing. It's a way to process and scale up the power of just one processor, one brain -- to be a super brain.

What I'm saying is, we may be tied to one game board, and our field of vision filled with a "Jekyll & Hyde".

Someone who has a more powerful brain, may be walking around us, and focusing on several other games they are playing, while we are fully at our limit, as I mentioned -- our field of view, tapped to capacity, only believing that the full picture is a singular "Jekyll & Hyde" game.

Again, this is why my work will be more illustrative, if I ever get around to it.

If one is able to somehow lift up their view, from a tight focus, one might be able to see, that if someone were to be playing not just "this game", but multiple games, all at the same time. That might be a way to catch him. If in fact suppositions like brainpower/mindpower, games etc. are relevant and applicable. This is a theory.

Alternatively, progress could no doubt, be made by focusing on the "single game". But you may not really be able to understand why he's doing what he's doing, unless you can see, the bigger picture.

That's just one of many takes on this of course. It's one that I believe makes the most sense to me.

But we'll see. We're all trying our own angle, and bringing our own experiences to this puzzle.

Who knows, maybe one of us will find him?
The more, the merrier ;-)

Johnny

"Someone who has a more powerful brain, may be walking around us, and focusing on several other games they are playing, while we are fully at our limit,"

I'm not sure what you mean @Johnny.

I thought I articulated pretty well the scope of the limitations that we have, that Zodiac did not.

What limitations are you referring to that the Zodiac had, that we do not? And what does it have to do with Dennis the menace?

Educate me.

Unless this was a joke? It went over my head perhaps.

Johnny
3/6/2025 02:21:57 am

If someone had come up with this microfiche thing during Zodiacs escapades, they might have solved it only on that one perhaps. I think he was situated at the largest library in San Francisco and he spent much time there.

Richard

That is certainly possible, especially if he worked in San Francisco and indulged in after hours research.

Strange how that "disturbed teenager" appeared out of the woodwork almost at the same time when they started to re-investigate and/or shoot for that tv-show with their stupid CALIMERO computer. Am I correct? I was long time away of TZC and didn't follow chronologicaly the unfolding events for many years, so I might be wrong with that assumption.

Now, if Ken came up with something new I'll keep my mouth shut. For a change that's not some overblown clown. Did you see his face when he talked about that meeting with Cheris brother, it was in one of his utube videos not the TV-show itself. I can see what he is doing, and its good, very good!
Seeing that, I hope Ken looks also at the other Z-cases, and maybe not in 2035 but rather quicker like in ASAP. Ken, you are hereby offically ZODCOM approved, welcome mate.

With all what this MB knows about the CJB case, as of today in 2025, how believable is that entire RPD story about some "disturbed teenager" writing the confession letter? What is the actual status on the CJB case from your viewpoint(s)?

Johnny
3/6/2025 09:54:01 am

If it's Zodiac, he would have an even harder time to get away, but away he got, right? I would give it a very, very minimal probability standing from the outside looking in. If Rick so believes because of the letters and the poem, i willingly change my mind.

What do you think, Zodcom? And what's with that rag? .:)

First i need to catch up from about 2008, or so, up to date. Not so easy when you find this site and thousands of interesting articles Richard wrote. Rag? Tom Waits track? Did you liked it? I note, Richard, that the ''man of a thousand glove puppets'' is referring to your site as ''Grinell's fantasy website''.

It's good topics like this Ripper one, where the strong persuasions are that the Zodiac was inspired to the point of actually plagiarizing - which makes the Zodiac's fantasy world come alive.

Could the ''Master puppeteer'' be paying you a compliment ?

Or, maybe he's just envious ?

Richard

He's now calling himself "Pedro" in the "A Right-Handed Zodiac Killer At LHR" comments section. Unfortunately he hasn't got the balls to own his own comments on my site. His constant smearing of people is the only way he stays relevant these days. Very sad indeed.

What a topsy turvy world. Now a lot makes sense.

He hosts pure tripe on his website. And calls this site a fantasy website.

Talk about living in a fantasy world. I'd use an animal farm George Orwell analogy here, but I fear it would be lost on his pig head.

I'm so embarrassed that I went to that website, and was fooled by the marketing and falsity of all that he purports to be.

His continued behavior is odious and despicable. What a waste of a human.

I'll have another look, ZODCOM.

An even brief visit to Mr Voigt's website, requires a period of recovery. I find it helps to have two paracetamol handy, after the experience.

You get mugged by ''flying adverts'' from unexpected directions, as soon as you enter this ''once-hallowed turf'' of the Zodiac internet.

First established in 1898, according to Mr Voigt, and just 10 years after Jack the Ripper. Although my eyesight isn't what it used to be.

He was sent a threatening communication in the mail, along with a suspicious and possibly dangerous chemical agent.

He was also sent a set of fingerprints. Which were missing the tip(s) of two fingers. There's only one suspect that would match that set of prints, who's missing 2 fingertips.

Unfortunately it wasn't Allen, nor Kane, nor any other suspect but one in particular . There was only one suspect missing two tips of his fingers.

The whole episode was a gigantic troll, of a gigantic Troll. Someone so thick-headed, they wouldn't be able to put the clues together, even if the perpetrator literally sent him his identification.

This was the Zodiac, demonstrating, that the supposed #1 site for Zodiac kiler information, was a clewless imbecile .

More will come out that will prove to be even more embarrassing. Including, hosting the detective that came to him and made the case for a suspect that he -- a detective that has been doing this work for decades, found that lines up this suspect with the profile of the Zodiac.

And he sent him away.

He has no interest in clarifying this case. He no longer knows what he's doing, nor why he's doing it.

He now exists to live under a bridge, and peek out from below, to see who's walking across the bridge that he fell down from.

Like a troll.
