SHALLOW GRAVE  AT WEIMAR

The 'Halloween' card was mailed to the San Francisco Chronicle on October 27th 1970 inferring a fourteenth victim. On July 26th 1970 the Zodiac Killer mailed the 'Little List' letter claiming thirteen victims. If nurse Donna Ann Lass was a Zodiac victim, then the 'Halloween' card must surely have been referring to the disappearance and likely murder of Donna Lass from the Sahara Tahoe Hotel & Casino on September 6th 1970. But why did it take the Zodiac Killer nearly two months to send this correspondence to the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper? Was it imperative for the killer to somehow tie this possible murder into the Halloween festival - and did the depiction of skeletons, the pumpkin and the phrase "peek a boo you are doomed" provide any clue to the location of Donna Lass' body or burial site.

This by all accounts was a bold and brazen abduction at the end of the young woman's shift at approximately 1:50 am, in a seemingly predetermined crime. If this was a serial offender, such as the Zodiac Killer, then the clues may lie in previous similar unsolved crimes with overlapping traits. The following ideas will be examining this possibility, using the design of the 'Halloween' card and later 'Pines' card mailed on March 22nd 1971, also believed by some to have been crafted by the hand of the Zodiac Killer.

PictureClick to enlarge
The choice of a skeleton on this card may have been deliberate, bearing in mind Donna Lass was likely murdered the day of her abduction and had remained undiscovered for nearly two months at this juncture. It is also easy to understand how the card can be interpreted as a skeleton wearing a pumpkin. But what if the depiction is implying something more sinister, in that Donna Lass is buried beneath a pumpkin or pumpkins? This may seem a ridiculous observation, until we consider the second skeleton on the card inner wearing a mask of sorts. Could the killer have intended us to interpret the card differently - such as an eye patch, thereby implying the phrase 'pumpkin patch'? The clue may not be entirely literal, but effectively implying the young woman may have been buried on farmland, which may have grown pumpkins or sold farm produce. This is a real stretch, so we will go further.

Randall Scott Clemons produced an interesting article linking the Zodiac Killer to various golf courses, and suggesting that he may have traveled extensively to murder in certain areas he was familiar with through his pastime. In his first contact with the newspapers on July 31st 1969 the killer stated "This is the murderer of the 2 teenagers last Christmass at Lake Herman + the girl on the 4th of July near the golf course in Vallejo". The murderer of Paul Stine on October 11th 1969 escaped into the Presidio Park adjacent to the Presidio Golf course. The Aetna Springs Golf Course, Napa, was one of the first golf courses west of the Mississippi River and built on the Aetna Springs Resort's property in 1891. It is only 11 miles as the crow flies from the Knoxville Road, bordering Lake Berryessa, the site of Zodiac's third attack on Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepard.

PictureDeana Hooper
But more crucially, it is less than 5 miles from Pope Valley, the location where the three young women had driven through at around 3:00 pm on September 27th 1969, just before they encountered a strange man who appeared to be following them. Did he have a ball marker on him that day, which came in useful at around 6:30 pm?

Deana Hooper's skeletal remains were discovered on March 11th 1975 in an open field at Columbus Parkway and St. John's Mine Road, right next to the Blue Rock Springs Park Golf Course. She was last seen on July 11th 1974 at the Enlisted Men's Club on Mare Island.  Established in 1892, Mare Island Golf Club in Vallejo, California is the oldest golf course west of the Mississippi River. Originally built as a 9-hole course,  its first 30 years included sand greens and dry fairways. The course began near the former Marine Barracks and proceeded south to Lake Rodgers (built in 1876 and named after Rear Admiral Rodgers), then returned to the start. Was the killer somehow connected to the military, and an avid golfer, that inevitably made him familiar with these murder sites?

PictureClick to enlarge
The 'Pines' card depicted an advertisement for mountain condominiums.
A newspaper article stated that: 'the site depicted on the 'Pines Card' was from an advertisement published last Sunday by several newspapers. It was an artist's rendition of houses among the trees at a Boise Cascade Company project at Incline Village, where construction has just begun on the development. While much of the Sierra area is under several feet of snow, Incline Village has only two feet on the ground. Police went to the area to determine if a search is possible'.
Many observers toyed with the idea that Donna Lass may have been buried by the punch hole in the card - but surely that would have been too simple a clue by the Zodiac Killer. In another stretch of the imagination, could the positioning of 'Sierra Club' on the tree, be designed to give the impression of a flagpole? We would then be possibly looking for a burial site east of a Sierra Club golf course - not at Incline Village - but somewhere 'past the Lake Tahoe areas'. Somewhere the killer was familiar with and had used to bury a previous victim.

PictureJudith Hakari
Judith Hakari was a nurse at Sutter Hospital, who disappeared heading back to the Markston Apartments on March 7th 1970. Her body was later discovered by Ponderosa Way in Weimar, forty two miles along Interstate 80.
'At 11:30 pm. Hakari calls her fiance to tell him she's leaving Sutter Memorial Hospital where she works as a nurse. By 1:30 in the morning, she has still not come home. Her fiance, waiting at her apartment, begins to worry. "He went out to the apartment complex parking lot and discovered her car was parked in the assigned space that she had," Links said. But Judith was nowhere to be seen. She was found one month later, strangled and bludgeoned to death. "Some hikers discovered a body in a shallow grave up in the town of Weimar, in Placer County. And during their investigation they determined that it was Judith Hakari," Links said.' Fox40.com.

Both Judith Hakari and Donna Lass were nurses, who disappeared after their shift end, both at night or in the early hours of darkness, and both en route back home. Is it conceivable that the murderer of Judith Hakari is also responsible for the abduction and murder of Donna Lass, and if so, did he bury or conceal her body somewhere he was familiar with and had ultimately escaped detection before - in Weimar. Or somewhere very close?

Picture
We could be looking for a location in Placer County near farm land, that may have a connection to pumpkins. There will be a Sierra Club golf course west of the location. It may also be a location that has relevance to parts of the phrases contained within the 'Halloween' card, such as "From your secret pal," "peek a boo you are doomed" and "slaves." And more importantly, somewhere close to where Judith Hakari's body was discovered.

There is such a place in Colfax, Placer County, California. It was named after Schuyler Colfax Jr, known for his opposition to slavery while serving in Congress, and was a founder of the Republican Party. In January 1865, as Speaker of the House, Colfax made the unusual choice to cast a vote for passage of the Thirteenth Amendment. Colfax is located 4.4 miles (as the crow flies) from Ponderosa Way, the burial site of Judith Hakari.

The Bierwagen's Donner Trail Fruit and Farm Market near Chicago Park, is situated only 7 miles east of the
Alta Sierra Country Club and golf course. Secret Town is 7 miles from Colfax and 14 miles from Ponderosa Way.

The residence of Judith Hakari and the area her body was discovered, not only were situated alongside Interstate 80, but Ponderosa Way is only 2 miles or 5 minutes from Interstate 80, and the Markston Apartments only 4 miles or 8 minutes from Interstate 80.  Interstate 80 is bisected by Colfax and runs from the Markston Apartments, where Judith Hakari lived, to Truckee, California on the north side of Lake Tahoe. Ponderosa Way (as the crow flies) is 38 miles from the Markston Apartments and 46 miles from Truckee. Was the same killer responsible for the murder of both women, and prepared to create a preconceived buffer zone to each burial site? A familiar 'dumping ground' similar to that employed by the likes of the Green River and Gilgo Beach Killer.

Finally, we have a lonely lane in the heart of 'pine country,' where you can "peek through the pines" into "Peek A Boo" lane, just 2 miles (as the crow flies) from Ponderosa Way. But would you be doomed?

* The properties on Peek a Boo Lane were built subsequent to 1970, but the lane itself, I am unsure of its beginnings.

Nice idea put forward, about potential victims ''coming to rest'' in the vicinity of golf courses,Richard.

And,now that you have pointed it out,the ''Sierra Club'' plus telegraph pole, does resemble a flag stick,as one might see on a golf course.

It is not necessarily a coincidence, with possible golf course links.Areas of land, that would normally be hard to access, now having that access, with ''leisure'' development, including roads and parking areas.

But,I believe we ''oversell'' Zodiac on the ''body count'' [?].

He seems to have found ways of suggesting his ''harvest'',through his correspondence.

We must tread,with caution [?].

Don't know whether the murderer of Donna Lass and Judith Hakari was Zodiac, but let us assume he wasn't, but the same man was responsible for both. They were both abducted after they finished work as a nurse. Most murders are committed by somebody they know.
Let us assume the murderer of Judith Hakari was a work colleague at Sutter Hospital (who worked the same hours), who trailed her back to the Markston apartments. This is a 15 minute journey- so if she left the hospital at 11.30 pm, she was likely abducted at 11.45 pm from the apartment complex. Her car was unlocked and her keys were found on the floorboard of the vehicle. Would a killer after working likely 8 hours until 11.30 pm, make the extreme effort of an 85 mile round trip, as well as attempting to hide her body to prevent its discovery. This would have taken at least 2 hours and the 'least effort principle' applies at this time at night. However, if you worked at Sutter Hospital and lived in Lake Tahoe, and traveled either route (I-80 or Route 50) to and from these areas regularly, then dumping a body equidistant from your work and residence makes more sense. The 'least effort principle' now doesn't apply. Additionally, you would be aware of likely disposal sites, having often traveled the routes regularly. Judith Hakari and Donna Lass, near as damn it, both disappeared in the early hours of Sunday morning, so the killer may have been working the same shift on March 7th and September 5th, leaving work at the Sutter Hospital at 11.30 pm on both occasions. If he had left the hospital at 11.30 pm on September 5th 1970, the journey home to Lake Tahoe via Route 50 is 104 miles or 2 hours (likely 2hr 15 m at night). This 2- 2.15 hour journey would place him outside the Sahara Tahoe Hotel at 1.30-1.45 pm, just before Donna Lass finished her shift. Did he work at the Sahara Tahoe Hotel at some point and knew both victims. Was he employed as medical staff at both. Was he a locum. The similarities are there: both victims were separated by only 3 years, both abducted after they left the hospital, and the body of Hakari was discovered equidistant between both locations. Also, why in the middle of nowhere would a serial killer (unless done for a Zodiac like game) bother to bury the body. Most people who bury the body are connected to the victim, either friends, family or work colleagues. They want to conceal the crime- without a body it makes a murder charge harder. A serial killer has no attachments, and therefore makes it less of an imperative. This, considering Judith Hakari had just finished her shift, may indicate a work colleague who trailed her to the apartment complex, or somebody who knew her work pattern. It could be a random killer just hovering around the area, but the percentage odds always lies with somebody known to the victim. Shame we cannot get work records for the Sahara Hotel and Sutter Hospital, or even Albany Medical Center for that matter.

By all accounts Judith Hakari was buried in a white sack- something possibly used in hospital laundry, morgue etc.

Did the killer have Sunday off work from the Sutter Hospital, and was due back Monday or possibly Tuesday, hence the delaying phone call to Donna Lass' employer and landlord, claiming she had to attend a family illness. This would have bought the killer a day or two until his journey back to Sacramento so he could dispose of the body en route to work, likely in a similar area to Hakari.

Good insights Richard. These two murders with same patterns makes 1 wonder if LE ever combed thru that Weimar spot for Donnas remains?
They need to go dig around that shallow grave again; before the Sierra Nevada SNOW returns too.

HC should hire your services if they truly want to attain some success.

Some great extra detail give on Judith Hakari.Naturally, pretty sobering stuff.

I came across Zodiac,in real ''understanding'' senses, after reading about the Santa Rosa Hitchhike murders. His name kept cropping up.

I was looking for a ''California connection'' to three murders, one of which was a nursery nurse, coincidentally or not.

Before I knew it,I had Zodiac down for about 40 murders...but started to ''pull in the reins'',as I became more familiar, with his case.

Graysmith and Lafferty, had him down for up to ''120''....perhaps just a complete ''sweep'' of ''possibles''.

From what you have stated,Richard,it could well be probable...if not possible,at least....that Lass and Hakari share the same perpetrator. And,someone perhaps, that had work connections to them.

Personally,I have become inclined to a ''leaner'' approach to Zodiac's ''body count''....and that many of his ''upper number'' claims are merely concocted to suit a current letter, that he was writing,at the time.

I have him down for about ''12'' murders...perhaps ''15'',at most.

In all seriousness,it is a ''tough cookie'',to figure out.

If LE can just get him on one...the rest will fall.

That is ''lean''.

I have him down for at least three, before SF vicinity.

And,possibly four,from 1978 -1981.

Ordinarily, that would have been the end of it.

But,one more,in recent years might seal his fate.

Fingers crossed.

Just back to the Pines card,briefly....it had always struck me...why ''presumed Zodiac'' had pasted ''Sierra Club'' on the card,in that particular place [?].

Now you have pointed it out,Richard,it appears ''obvious'',that the intention was, that it should resemble a flag, with the telegraph pole taken in to account.

Beyond the obvious,it is difficult to see significance...but enhances the 3-dimensional ''aspect'',to the picture.

Also, just to point out ''Hell Hole reservoir'',as being 15 miles due west of Lake Tahoe. With the Count Marco letter,in mind [?].

In 1989 another woman was murdered and discovered on Colfax, just 3.5 miles as the crow flies from the 'dumping ground' of Judith Hakari on Ponderosa Way. They're 19 years apart, but it wouldn't be the first time a serial killer has evaded capture for decades. This woman, in her early 20s again, was found on Yankee Jims Road six miles east of Colfax . The decomposed body was found on February 10th 1990.

In December 1977 the body of a woman was found nude and strangled in a snowbank by a couple walking their dog near the Highway 20-Interstate 80 interchange, east of Emigrant Gap. The coroner who examined the body after its discovery said finger marks on the neck indicated she had been strangled. Known only as Jane Doe, Case No. 11929-77, the woman was never identified. The location is 31 miles from Ponderosa Way.

A runaway from Hayward, McDonald’s body was found over an embankment off I-80 at Gold Run on March 6, 1984. The 14-year-old was last seen getting into a blue low-rider vehicle driven by a Mexican male in the Vacaville area. She had apparently run away before to meet a boyfriend in Reno. 18 miles from Ponderosa Way.

Oct. 3, 1972 – Responding to a report of a burning log at I-80 and Drum Road in Baxter, California Highway Patrol officers and Placer County Sheriff’s deputies, found the body of an unidentified male. The victim was wearing a hospital gown and was wrapped in multiple sheets and a multicolored blanket. An autopsy revealed the victim was bedridden, malnourished and alive when he was set on fire. 22 miles from Ponderosa Way. Hospital gown eh.

Jan. 6, 1985 – Two hunters found a human skull off Boole Road near Canyon Way. Additional bones were later found and determined to belong to a 16- or 17-year-old female.
Aug. 4, 1986 – PG&E workers found a human skull in a drainage ditch near Highway 20 and I-80. The skull is believed to be that of a Caucasian female in her mid-teens to early 20s.

Seems like a popular dumping ground near Colfax.
Boole Road is only 3 miles as the crow flies from Ponderosa Way. Plenty of possibilities in these cases.

They have DNA from Donna Lass' sister, Mary Pilker. I wonder if they have the funds to cross check any of these skeletal remains, or have done it regardless.

A ''breathless'' collection of poor souls,Richard.

A sweeping generalisation, perhaps, but Tahoe represents ''Fun City'',for many.Big bucks casinos, drinking joints,a variety of leisure and pleasure, with many hiding from their real lives,on a temporary basis.

And then,a glance at the terrain....missing people, staying missing....for years or forever.

Even if Zodiac is not responsible for any of the victims, that you have mentioned, there is compelling evidence in his correspondence, that the resort resonated with him,in a big way.

Unsurprisingly,if he was a young man on a decent pay packet. How could the lure of legalised gambling and ''bright lights'' alone, not appeal to him [?].

So,the Paradice Hotel,Peek-a-boo Lane,Hell Hole Reservoir,Sierra Club....at the very least,influences....or even figurative ''vehicles'' to push ''suggestion'' and inference....to guilt on others....and ''not'' him.

This is probably nothing to do with anything, but anyway:

"Peek-A-Boo" by The New Vaudeville Band from the album Finchley Central (1967).

Peek-a-boo, I do love you
You're the one girl for me
When I look into your eyes
I see my destiny

Peek-a-boo, what can I do?
You're so fancy and free
Though I try I can't disguise
The hold you have on me

I would grow much weaker
Weather would bleaker
If I spent a week away from Peek-a-boo

Peek-a-boo, I'm telling you
You're the girl of my dreams
Please don't walk away
I'd put an end to all my schemes

I would grow much weaker
Weather would be bleaker
If I spent a week away from Peek-a-boo

Yes,the song ''Peek-a-boo'' may well have had an influence on Zodiac.

It was a hit single,on both sides of the Atlantic,in 1967.....as had ''Winchester Cathedral'',by the same band, the year before.A reawakening of dance music from the 1920's and 1930's.

As an aside, their manager was Peter Grant,an ex professional wrestler, who went on to manage ''Led Zep''.

Hi Richard, do you know which publication did the article shown here with the headline "Missing Tahoe Nurse's Family Offers Reward"? I see "2/71" written on it, which I assume means February. Do you have anything further? If the Chronicle wrote a follow up article about Donna Lass's disappearance like this (outlining that the investigation was leading no where) only weeks before the Pines card arrived that would lend some weight I believe to theory that her case inspired the card. It would be more telling if such an article came out in the middle of March and it either way it is still difficult to believe that Zodiac actually murdered her, but this article caught my eye.

I believe it was the Chronicle, but I haven't got the exact date. But yes, I have always considered this the trigger for the Pines card, as you can see how he was telling the newspaper how to find her with rudimentary hints or directions. And possibly how he killed her- "A round in the snow" written upside down.

All the answers to the Zodiac Killer codes were given to us by the murderer before the turn of 1971. There was never a requirement to search for any solutions because the Zodiac Killer (in his own words) provided us with the answers between July 26th 1970 and October 27th 1970.
