THE 1987 CAR DEATHS OF THREE CHILDREN

3/23/2025

PictureJose Santo Bugarin
On Saturday, September 12th 1987, Jose Santo Bugarin (26) and Alvaro Rodolfo Escobar (31) were charged with three counts of murder in the San Jose deaths of Jesus Lopez Jr. (11), his brother Cesar Lopez (5), and their friend, Berenice Marquez (6), who were playing on a 15 by 25 foot lawn outside 1821 South King Road. A fourth child, Francisco Torres (9) suffered a broken leg and collarbone.

On September 12th 1987, Bugarin and Escobar were occupants in a 1978 black Pontiac Trans Am when it swerved into the front yard of the residence and collided with the four children, before striking a fence. In his efforts to flee the scene, Jose Bugarin did the unthinkable and reversed the vehicle back over the children and sped off, only to be arrested a short time later about 1/2 mile away. They were held without bail on three counts of murder and one count of conspiracy. His callousness was revealed in Bugarin's statement, which read that he "was aware that he had run over the children and assumed that they were under the car, but he was primarily concerned with fleeing". A witness to the tragic event, Eddie Petersen (19) said the driver "was knocking over kids like they were nothing". Police Lt. Ken Hawkes stated "I'm getting sick and tired myself of drunk drivers butchering people".

On Monday, September 14th 1987, a battered and bruised Jose Santo Bugarin appeared in Santa Clara Municipal Court to be arraigned on four outstanding warrants totaling S21,500. Two for a suspended driver's license. Unsurprisingly, Jose Santo Bugarin had a history of traffic offences dating back many years. The deaths of these three children were widely featured in dozens of newspapers throughout America, including New York

Picture
PictureSan Jose Mercury, California
Incredibly, Jose Santo Bugarin pleaded not guilty to murder and manslaughter charges when appearing in a San Jose Municipal Court on Monday, October 26th 1987. This latest development was reported in the San Jose Mercury newspaper on October 27th 1987. The Zodiac Killer, who we know was influenced by what he read in the newspapers (and the media in general), had referenced San Jose directly and indirectly in many of his communications, threatened a San Jose widow in a letter on November 21st 1969, made a phone call to the San Jose Highway Patrol on December 19th 1969, insinuated his involvement in the murders of San Jose teenagers, Kathy Snoozy (15) and Debra Furlong (14) on August 3rd 1969, and had written his pseudonym on a tombstone removed from a San Jose cemetery on September 18th 1973.

So it isn't really surprising that the Zodia Killer had his nose firmly glued in the news coming out of San Jose in current times. After hearing that Jose Santo Bugarin was now pleading not guilty to murder and manslaughter on October 26th 1987, the Zodiac Killer would have composed a letter and mailed it to the Vallejo Times-Herald almost immediately. It was postmarked the following day, on October 27th 1987, with the contents seemingly piggybacking off the disturbing case of the three murdered children, stating "This is the Zodiac speaking. I am crackproof. Tell herb caen that I am still here. Tell the blue pigs if want me I will be out driving around on Halloween in my death machine looking for some kiddies to run over. Cars make nice weapons. The pigs can catch me if They can find me out there. Just like in the movie The Car. Tell the kiddies watch before they cross the street on Halloween nite. Tell Tochi my new plans".

PictureAlbany Times Union, New York
After the black Pontiac Trans Am of Jose Santo Bugarin slammed into the four children, it struck a fence and then reversed over their bodies The movie "The Car" (1977), referenced by the Zodiac Killer in his letter, has some interesting parallels. Here is the opening description of the movie's plot from Wikipedia: "Two cyclists riding through a canyon are followed down the road by a mysterious matte black car. At a bridge, the car proceeds to crush one cyclist against the wall and ram the other from behind, catapulting him off the bridge. A hitchhiker, hoping to get a ride, encounters the car and insults it after it purposely tries to run him down. It halts to a stop, reverses backwards, and runs him over several times before driving off. The local sheriff's office, called to a series of hit and runs, gets a lead on the car".

The Zodiac Killer had previously claimed on October 13th 1969 he was going to "wipe out a school bus some morning. Just shoot out the front tire + then pick off the kiddies as they come bouncing out", indicating that he was quite prepared to glorify in the deaths of young children. Noticing that the murders of Jesus Lopez Jr. (11), his brother Cesar Lopez (5), and their friend, Berenice Marquez (6) received newspaper coverage all over America, he anticipated that a threat on young children, so soon after the San Jose hit and run on September 12th 1987, would probably achieve similar results. The Zodiac Killer was correct, because his October 27th 1987 letter was featured from west to east coast, and in between.

𝓓earest 𝓡ichard,🖋️

🅛ove the work you continue to do. I think it's spot on. You're doing great work in getting inside the head of this killer, and possibly understanding how he was operating and highlighting what could have been one of his main motivation𝒮.

𝒜ttℰntion.

🅾n a separate note; I don't envy you in trying to maintain this site. I really don't understand so many in this community. I have to assume (One should never assume) that some feel so inadequate, and that they can't contribute, that they don't realize they engage in the same behavior as that of a reprehensible rℰprobatℰ.

𝒜ttℰntion.

Bℰst.

I used to think Zodiac as Joe average, but I now believe this guy was much cleverer than I first thought, and he would go to historic levels to compose his communications. Yet most of what he wrote about can be traced back to contemporary newspaper articles within a month or two (and generally a week). I haven't questioned this letter for about 10 years now, and I have said a million times we have to go beyond the handwriting and tone of a letter when deciding on authenticity, because they are subjective in nature. But this broken record won't change anything.

I have closed comments on every article on my site, other than the current one. Comments on this one will remain for only 30 days, but may be terminated at any time, depending on circumstances. It gives people plenty of time to contribute.

''Cars make nice weapons'' is a pretty chilling remark, and I am a supporter of the authenticity of this letter, Richard.

The Zodiac seems to be back into his stride on confidence and B.S. combined. Not guns or knives or bombs this time - but cars.

A ''slip of the memory'' though (?) from the Zodiac:

Nov 9th 1969 Bus Bomb letter (page 4):

''The death machine is already made.''

The Zodiac was referring to a bomb.

But now, in 1987, his ''death machine'' is a car.

Sloppy work from the Zodiac ?

Or go back 7 days to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, October 20th 1987, for just one of a number of articles on all-terrain "Death Machines", responsible for the deaths of many children. Link above.

Ah...possible pinch of phrase, as so often seems to be the case with the Zodiac.

But fell down on continuity from 18 years prior ? ''Death machine'' was already allocated to a bomb.

Richard
3/23/2025 04:09:52 pm

A change of continuity for Zodiac for sure, but "Death Machine" was associated with the Nazi's, the M-60 Machine Gun used in Vietnam, these all-terrain vehicles, and of course, Zodiac's bomb. I suppose Rubi, any man made thing created for destruction (or causing of death), whether intended or not, can be satisfactorily described as a "death machine".

🆆hat's funny is, whenever I would read that phrase, when it was connected to this case, and to the Zodiac. Although it was supposedly referring a bomb -- I always read that and mentally processed, a car.

Ⓘt might have been me connecting it to the Stephen King movie🎬 "𝓒hristine". Although I'm sure I remember the movie that you refer to directly in your article for "The car".

🅱ut I always connected that particular phrase "Death Machine" to a car.🚖

𝓢o your article and your conclusion immediately resonated with me.

I've come to start believing, that I understood how this person thinks. 𝒜 dangerous and 𝒔lipp𝒆ry 𝒔lop𝒆 to be sure, but it's what has allowed me to find what I believe I've found.🔍

Could be that, or could be a bad self-diagnosis 😂

Yes, I suppose it's about the ''impact'' a word or phrase might have.

We have the advantage of observing the Zodiac over many years. It seems satisfying to find fault in him. My expectation, anyway, is that he had an incredibly good memory. So, to spot the odd ''mistake'' in him, is a thrill (relatively).

@SirRichard,🖋️

🅸 too believe he was clever (but not cleverer than me ;-)

Ⓑut what I believe you've uncovered, and/or are alluding to, is his attentiveness to the news, and possibly particularly, the news-papers.

He's gotta have his press.📰

Well, it's good to see you back in the saddle so soon, EdEdwardsCiphers.

I had a strange dream yesterday. I found myself conversing with someone who seemed to have three heads. And, justifying that I might be talking to anyone of them, without reason or forewarning.

I thought I had experienced it all with the Zodiac internet. But you never know what's round the next corner.

This merry binge...so the Zodiac case will be solved soon, not to say in no time, right? With the wrong profile leading to the wrong suspect(s)...well, congratulations.

Zodiac never targeted little kids, the bus bomb letter was a fake threat. All that z-linkage and supposed z-connections to cases like for example Snoozy and Furlong are false...but you'll do fine.

For Zodiac, killer of kids are the worst so he would not even like to be connected for "fake-credits" and he would have other ways to mess around with cops if he wanted to. Threatening to harm them with a bomb is "in his head" a complete other thing.

Rubi, it was nice to make your acquaintance and we all continue to think you are very talented. So we'll see you on a board again in 15, no, 12 years? :)

Not the anti-social personality disorder media.

@𝐑ubi,

I am back in the 🐎saddle, but not to worry, unlike most, I know where the sunset is, and that's where I'm headed.🌇

I want to paint you a picture. ℙosit a scenario if you will:

🅸magine a situation, where a bunch of people, or maybe even just one in particular -- seeks out a criminal or to uncover a criminal. Only to uncover a criminal conspiracy. Even worse, they do not uncover the criminal conspiracy but instead, fail to do so, where one could possibly exist. (I don't mean conspiracy like a theory, I mean the legal definition of a conspiracy. When more than one person conspires to an enterprise)

𝙸magine if this person, gains some notoriety. Fame✨, or perhaps infamy⨁. Now because this person is not sophisticated, they marinate in this attention. All the while, they are ignorant of this conspiracy. Meaning, through a large lack of imagination, it does not occur to them, that the person that they were looking for, has colleagues. People that have survived him that are not his family, but an assorted enterprise. Possibly. 🤔

Ⓐ person like this, would be caught by surprise, when they receive poisoned mail, along with something threatening, similar to what happened to 𝕸elvin 𝕭elli.

№𝚆 imagine such a person, completely unaware, that the person that they've been "sleuthing" after, was the wrong person, but the real person, actually did target them. Not only that. The person that targeted them, may have friends that are...lingering.

№𝚠 sℰℰ, here's where it gets intℰrℰsting...

🆃he person that is the fool, that is basking in what they think is the glow of fame✨. Their intention is to attempt to defame others, for what they thought was their sole claim. All the while, they were harassing the wrong person, while the right person, and his conspirators -- watched him with great intℰrℰst.

Sℰℰ, they watch him. Because while he's a fool, he's a useful fool. Because he does their work for them. He serves as a distraction from them, through him. I believe the proper term is ... useful idiot.🧻

Ⓣhese really dangerous🕵🏽people, they watch the fool, to make sure he doesn't "Wise up". Because the last thing they need is another wise guy -- like them.

𝓢o I would ask you. Who would you rather be in this scenario? The fool🍤, who is famous? Or the non-famous, unknown person, watching things unfold from the shadows, because they know what else lurks in the 𝓢hadow𝒔.

Quite a riddle.🧩

I would just want to watch.👀
