THE 12:56AM PAYPHONE TRACE IN VALLEJO

9/24/2024

PictureNancy Slover, October 1969
With the invaluable assistance of Zodiac researcher Jibberjabber who contacted various agencies on the specifics of tracing calls back in 1969, including the Connections Museum, we can now establish that when police first arrived at the payphone at Springs & Tuolumne the receiver was off the hook, just like at Napa. The Connections Museum wrote "If the caller hung up before the trace was complete, then no, the operator could not keep the line open from their end (and thereby trace it). It could be that he (the Zodiac) left the phone off the hook in the booth after making the call, so then the operator just had to stay on the line as well until the trace was complete".

After the Zodiac Killer had finished speaking with Nancy Slover at approximately 12:40am, the Zodiac Killer hung up the phone, effectively ending the call. However, they could ring the payphone back, which Zodiac claimed alerted the negro male to him and his car. His response was to yank the payphone receiver off the hook and leave it dangling. But this effectively kept the line open as Zodiac walked away, such that the operator only had to wait a period of time to effect the trace. Robert Graysmith wrote in his book Zodiac "After he hung up, the killer must have stood for a minute in a lighted phone booth. Suddenly the phone began to ring. To stop the phone from ringing he unhooked it and let it hang".

Picture
The Blue Rock Springs police report stated that at 12:47am Mrs Johnson PT&T operator called, not that the phone call was traced at 12:47am. According to the 2007 Zodiac movie a caller had to be kept on the line for 15 minutes to establish a trace according to Pacific Telephone. So if the Zodiac Killer yanked the receiver off the hook at approximately 12:41am and walked away, it would mean that Betty Main, who rang back the Springs & Tuolumne payphone, had to sit on this open line for 15 minutes subsequent to 12:41am to achieve a trace and discover the location of the payphone. If the movie was correct in claiming 15 minutes was required, then the payphone was identified at 12:56am. According to the police report, this was relayed to the Blue Rock Springs crime scene and a responding officer headed to the payphone. He would have arrived at the intersection of Springs & Tuolumne at approximately 01:05am to secure the payphone for fingerprint testing. The action of the Zodiac Killer yanking the ringing receiver from the hook in Vallejo likely shaped his actions at Main Street in Napa, where he pre-empted this possibility. Thanks to the work of Jibberjabber, I was able to revise the timeline of events surrounding the payphone trace..

You see the french wrecking crew, at youtube people? Nice talk last time between the DNA guy and Rick where Rick shined perhaps even more then i have seen him, and the biologist could barely keep up in his own line of work.

But that inividual was good at what he did and humble aswell.

Druzer had good points about the confession prose compared to the Zodiac letters. That got me thinking.

Beryessa aswell i find interesting in earlier episodes, and i believe its Zodiac, but Jerome tok some of his high points when he questioned if it was the same perpetrator or not.

Rubi, you here?

Thanks very much for your support Johnny, I noticed the two contributions today. I decided 3 to 4 weeks refreshed my remaining 100 brain cells, so I've popped back temporarily to offload some thoughts. Drop some suggestions in comments on Jerome's latest YouTube video on Zodiac regarding topics you would like covered in Episode 7 and beyond. Or some questions. Cheers Johnny.

Yes, i hope you come up with something interesting to talk about, despite that the time you discussing is rather long, personally i can't comment on youtube for some reason, but now we are just glad your back for a while. I think you shall just use your own expertise to the maximum, and i think that also Druzer is highly intelligent, but one thing i really would question Druzer about is that he believes that Zodiac has killed besides the known murders.

I personally think he might, but i see no real reason for it, so i think it could go either way. Ned had some comment i thought about aswell, but mostly everyone is extremely bright almost all the time in the wrecking crew. It's among the most intelligent discussions about the case anywhere if somewhat repetetive.

I think Ross is amazing aswell. Their is really two things i have thought about, and that is your ( Ricks ) thoughts about the letters sometimes is to hard to grapple for some of us, therefore you may be right in that for example the confession letter and the desktop is by the same author, and i personally almost feel ungrateful when not agreeing, but we all have a limit intellectually.

The second thing i go on about allt he time is that i don't agree that the Eureka card ( if it is from Chester or not ) is any strange at all. As you have said, Rick, the technology to see the numbers wasn't there when he sent it and i think he just wanted "to dip his toes" in the fire again. The real strange thing was that they found it and thought it could be from the Zodiac! That could have scared him if he knew.

But i hope it is not Chester despite i believe it might be him. If it's him it will maybe not get solved, and it will be hard anyway. The biologist on the last episode didn't sound especially positive.

On a last note, Jerome have been really funny a couple of times. I think the "cookies" was the best and your ( Jeromes ) imitation of a radio host was real pleasent aswell, very good! I think theories involving Cheney and Sandy is legitimate aswell, but i can't see any proofs of any involvement though, but it's sure strange they pointed fingers at Allen, or is it, i don't know.

Yes, the strange thing is that Cheney seem to lie when he knows full well that this is about murders. That could be defintely seem suspicious.

The photocopied (xeroxed) keys could be an extremely subtle clue in the Eureka card pertaining to "Chester" Floyd Carlson, the namesake of Chester Clark Klingel and the inventor of xerography (xerox). If the card wasn't mailed by Klingel, it could have been somebody who knew his forename. The desire of the author to photocopy the keys appears to have purpose.

Thanks Richard to you and Jibberjabber for exploring this topic, I've had questions about it for a long time.

The story of the 12:56 AM payphone trace in Vallejo is intriguing! It must have led to some interesting discoveries or insights. I’m curious to hear more about what you uncovered through this mystery!
