SPOONERISMS AND KNIFERISMS

1/26/2025

Picture
When the Zodiac Killer composed his "Exorcist" letter on January 29th 1974, he was likely comparing the "satirical comedy" of "The Mikado" stage play with "The Exorcist" movie by writing "I saw + think "The Exorcist" was the best saterical comidy that I have ever seen". But did he create a "spoonerism" by switching the "i" and "e" from "satirical comedy" to play a practical joke on the audience? More accurately described as a "kniferism", he wrote "saterical comidy". A kniferism is a type of spoonerism that involves switching the vowels between words or syllables to change the meaning. By writing "signed, yours truley" and then choosing the Tit-Willow verse from "The Mikado" which contained "My name is", was the Zodiac Killer suggesting that his name could be found within the verse?

The Zodiac Killer may have noticed that "The Exorcist" movie was directed by William Friedkin, based on a novel by William Peter Blatty, and that William Shwenck Gilbert was responsible for the libretto of "The Mikado" (text of the musical work). Was this why he chose "Tit-Willow" because it contained "Will" within its text, effectively giving us "William" four times within one communication? The Zodiac Killer chose the introduction of "best saterical comidy" based upon "The Exorcist" movie winning four awards at the Golden Globe ceremony at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, California on January 26th 1974,  for "Best Film", "Best Director", "Best Supporting Actress" and "Best Screenplay". Therefore, it was just coincidental that the novelist William Peter Blatty and director William Friedkin had the same forename as William Shwenck Gilbert, because he featured "The Mikado" on July 26th 1970, when he gave us more verses from the stage play. This wasn't something he could have manufactured, but it was something he could have noticed, thereby inspiring him to apply a type of "spoonerism" and altering "best satirical comedy" to "best saterical comidy" in his introduction. This may have been deliberate, because this "spoonerism" gave us our fifth William.

Picture
William Archibald Spooner (July 22nd 1844 to August 29th 1930) was a British clergyman and long-serving Oxford don. He was most notable for his absent-mindedness, and for supposedly mixing up the syllables in a spoken phrase, with unintentionally comic effect. Such phrases became known as spoonerisms, and are often used humorously. Many spoonerisms have been invented and attributed to Spooner. William Spooner was well liked and respected, described as "an albino, small, with a pink face, poor eyesight, and a head too large for his body". It was said that "his reputation was that of a genial, kindly, hospitable man". In the opinion of Roy Harrod, Spooner exceeded all the heads of Oxford and Cambridge colleges he had known "having regard to his scholarship, devotion to duty, and wisdom".  Wikipedia.

It would have been apt for the Zodiac Killer to use a "comedic spoonerism" when writing the
"best saterical comidy". It may have been one big game for the Zodiac Killer, who seemingly liked taunting his pursuers with a plethora of cryptic puzzles.

The essence of the Zodiac ?

Concerned citizen, August 1969:

''Working puzzles criptograms and word puzzles is one of my pleasures.''.

Find a grouping of the Zodiac's alphabetic letters, and start looking vertically, as well as horizontally - for as sure as eggs is eggs, the Zodiac was going to leave a duplicitous trail behind him. And, you only start understanding the whole of him, when you solve all his puzzles.

13-hole postcard of October 1970:

'' 13 t Z s '' as a ''concealed vertical'' equates to ''Thirteen teases''. The Zodiac is telegraphing that he has left 13 puzzles to be solved, within the postcard.

Not least the theme of 13: Thirteen victims ? Thirteen bullets ? A Baker's Dozen of Thirteen ? The 13-Day Alamo siege ?

The Zodiac, the ''Wordy, wordy man'', whose true heart started with crossword puzzles and the written word.

Absolutely Rubislaw, it seems evident that the Zodiac Killer was all about playing games with his audience, beginning with his 408 cipher. These games didn't necessarily have to have an end product, they were just done for his own amusement. The notion that the Zodiac Killer was of low intelligence, I believe is way wide of the mark, and our killer, while not a genius, was a highly functional individual with above average intelligence. The subtlety he coalesced these communications together was not that of a fool. The idea that the 340 cipher solution was of little use materially couldn't be further from the truth, because it allowed for the validation of several other letters and cards, such as the Fairfield letter and code, and the 148 character cipher, which held the common theme of calling out a hoaxer. Then, by extension, the 148 character cipher validates the Albany letter. The best example of a theme running through his communications was the Snoozy/Furlong murders, which began in August 1969 and ended in September 1973. While this man was a despicable killer, his communications, although appearing a little childish on first observation, were anything but.

The amount of newspapers he sourced for his 13-Hole postcard, Pines card and Monticello card was implicit of meaning. People rarely put this much effort into something with no meaning. These cards, for me, were his cleverest offerings with purpose. Of course, I am only going from my standpoint and my interpretations of the cards, that others may disagree with. We are both in agreement that the Concerned Citizen card was the Zodiac Killer, especially when we look at the cryptic offering he mailed on October 7th 1969, which is undoubtedly the same person. I'm certainly not sold on my observations in the above article but I thought it was worth pointing out. Some other person mentioned the switching of vowels in "satirical comedy" before I mentioned it here, so I thought I would examine whether it had purpose rather than just a bit of whimsical fun on behalf of Zodiac. Whatever the case, it is a form of "spoonerism" that does have a back story of its own.

Dearest Richard,

I have never heard of this "Spoon" man before. This is a very interesting take on it. Because no one knows for sure who the Zodiac was and what he was thinking, I would hazard a guess that this take is as valid as any.

In a previous posting, I believe I mentioned that a researcher on Reddit/Zodiac, had located what they believe were multiple spelling errors that may not have been such in previous eras.

I've taken this to be a connection to the study of etymology-- which broadly means the changing of meaning of words over time. A subject I find tangentially very interesting and pertinent to my own research, for what I believe it shows me about the evolution of the Zodiac persona and his sigil.

Yours is definitely a fun take. Although I have to admit, I still have to divine the meaning of "Kniferisms". That one escapes me on first reading. But alas, we can't all be brilliant, so hopefully I can be allowed some grace while I "catch up".

:-)

Fascinating.

I'm very interested in what you term "concealed vertical" Rubi. Looking forward to being able to see this concept fleshed out.

Also "Wordy, wordy man" is a play on "hurdy gurdy man", the song played during the murder scene at the opening of the "Zodiac" movie by David Fincher I'm assuming.

Nice wordplay.

Indeed, Richard - there was often an ''intertwining'' of quirky information and ''revisits'' leading one to believe one might be on the right track, and ''joining the dots'' in a figurative sense.

I found this, from a 100% homophonic solve of ''Z180'' - the Scorpion's 5th cipher.

As a grid of 15 rows of 12 columns - just three running rows, as an example:

RTISTICFEEIF
PERSONOFAGH
ASTOPURCHASE

''...artistic fee if person of age has to purchase...''

Well - there is ''FEE'' and ''FAG'' virtually on top of each other, over 25 years later. A ''reprise'' from the Halloween card of 1970.

Rubi,

These 100% solves, have they been peer reviewed and verified as logical and possibly authenticated?

All I have to add on the matter at this time is, I am a graduate mathematician, and well-known to DOJ Z-interested parties.

Well, I certainly don't mean to come across as ''sniffy'', EdEdwardsCiphers. And, appreciate your curiosity.

For DOJ's and case custodians CA DOJ in particular: The case has always been about catching a multiple murderer and successfully prosecuting him (The Zodiac) for those perceived murders, of which to date there are 5 confirmed.

The rest could be termed ''incidental'' as far as they are concerned. But naturally, and after time, even they realize and appreciate the implications of deciphering some of the Zodiac's puzzles. A greater understanding, if you will, of the ''object perpetrator''.

Tx Rubi.

I am not a graduate mathematician, so that may explain why I sometimes struggle to keep up with you.

In terms of being "well-known" to DOJ Z-interested parties, are you saying that there are those that cite your work? Or have put it forward internally and privately?

I'm curious if you're saying that your work has been credibly verified either privately (Which would give it some kind of imprimatur) or publicly like the FBI did for Oranchak's work.

Apologies if I'm not saying it right. I'm not exactly a professional at this. Just very curious.

And apologies for not understanding the "sniffy" comment. Hopefully I did not offend.

Many tx.

I've yet to see any real advantages, EdEdwardsCiphers - and one should note that Don Harden's ''advantage'' was that he was a highly regarded crosswords buff.

Let's just say the assumption is that all DOJ's are of one voice, with regards the Zodiac case. This has shown ''not'' to be the case, unfortunately, over the last ten years. Hopefully, some sensible intervention by politicians of influence can take place, before an alive Zodiac's mortal coil is unwound.

Tx Rubi.

My soul and singular hope is that like Don Harden being enamored of crossword puzzles, perhaps I have a punchers chance (*insert Jim Carrey joke here -- "So you're saying there's a chance?) Chances are slim, but perhaps someone like me, who's fond of word puzzles, perhaps there's a chance for me too. Who knows?

Time will tell.

As the expression goes: ''Never say never'', EdEdwardsCiphers. So - you could be there, at the death of it.

There appears to be a ''conflict of interests'' between certain DOJ's, for which Mr Trump may be attempting to sort out, now. Not least his dissatisfaction (an understatement) with the FBI.

I think it depends on how far Mr Trump is willing to take his perceived ''rectification'' - and we may not find out the fullness of this for another 3 months.

But, possibly sooner.

I heard that William Spooner's absent-mindedness extended beyond his words. On embarking on a train journey, once, he tipped his wife and kissed a railway porter goodbye.

He could be Joe Biden's ''double'' in another time ? Not casting aspersions on Mr Biden for being absent-minded - naturally.

I always took the Zodiac calling The Exorcist a "saterical comedy" as nothing more than an attempt to project a kind of evil persona, i.e. only someone as sick and twisted as him could find a horror film to be humorous. Its pretty passe by today's standards but for the time it was a very shocking thing.

Rubislaw32 link
1/29/2025 10:51:12 am

Indeed, Jay. By that time, cinema-goers had been known to faint & vomit ''in the aisles'', when viewing the Exorcist film. Something that the Zodiac had found funny.

My suspicions are that the Zodiac was actually ''exorcising himself'', tongue-in-cheek fashion, for having assumed the mantle of ''D B Cooper, the hoaxer'' of Dan Cooper, the hijacker. But, opinions remain varied to this day.
