"SATIRICAL OPERETTA WILL OPEN FRIDAY"

1/25/2025

Picture
Over the weekend of March 13th 1971 numerous calls poured into the Dublin Police Department saying they had seen the infamous Zodiac Killer, days before the Zodiac Killer's Los Angeles letter, mailed in Pleasanton, was released into the newspapers. Pleasanton borders the city of Dublin, situated 40 miles (about 50 minutes journey time by car) from San Francisco. Not only were these sightings a considerable distance from San Francisco, from where the Zodiac Killer usually mailed his letters, but these sightings and letter were 4 1/2 months removed from the last Zodiac communication. Therefore, an uptick in sightings of the Zodiac Killer, at a time and location corresponding to the mailing of a Zodiac letter, has to carry some significance.

Just under three years later, on January 29th 1974, the Zodiac Killer yet again deviated from San Francisco by mailing a letter from either San Mateo or Santa Clara County. There is good reason why I would like to focus on the possibility that his "Exorcist" letter was mailed in Santa Clara County, in which San Jose is the county seat and largest city.

The Exorcist letter began in mocking fashion with the writing "I saw + think "The Exorcist" was the best saterical comidy that I have ever seen". The Zodiac Killer's letter was almost certainly a reaction to "The Exorcist" film winning four awards at the Golden Globe ceremony at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, California on January 26th 1974,  for "Best Film", "Best Director", "Best Supporting Actress" and "Best Screenplay". However, the Zodiac Killer didn't describe the movie as "the best comidy", he described it as "the best saterical comidy", by adding the word "satirical" into the phrase. This doesn't come as much of a surprise, because the Zodiac Killer was equating "The Exorcist" movie with the satirical comedy "The Mikado", which followed on from this introduction (by citing a Tit-Willow verse). Despite the Zodiac Killer likening these two productions through humor, they didn't comfortably sit alongside each other in one communication.

PictureSunday Mercury News, January 13th 1974
What reminded the Zodiac Killer of "The Mikado" theater play 3 1/2 years after he had previously referenced it on July 26th 1970? Especially in a communication that capitalized on the recent release of "The Exorcist" movie on December 26th 1973. Had the Zodiac Killer attended a performance of "The Mikado" or read about one in recent weeks? Enabling him to marry the two productions together.

If he had, I would expect this performance to have taken place in Santa Clara County in January, to have featured prominently in the newspaper to catch the Zodiac's eye, and to have the word "satirical" front and center of the article. The following newspaper cutting is from the "Sunday Mercury News" in San Jose, Santa Clara County, advertising an upcoming production of "The Mikado" in four performances at the San Jose State University Workshop, from January 11th 1974 to January 13th 1974. Did the Zodiac Killer attend this production and mail his "Exorcist" letter from Santa Clara County, with the inserted word "satirical", to unveil his recent movements? Or at the very least, to suggest that he had recently watched the operetta at the San Jose State University? The Zodiac Killer usually composed his letters by utilizing recent newspaper articles, but was this one of them?

''...the Zodiac Killer's Los Angeles letter, mailed in Pleasanton,,,'' (March 13th 1971).

That had not occurred to me before, Richard : That, the operation headquarters to solve the mystery of the hooded man, creating graffiti with racial hatred, and threatening gun violence to schools and colleges in its area - was Pleasanton PD.

This nefarious campaign extended from December 2018 to June 2019, with Diablo Valley College, San Ramon, most targeted.

Then - an announcement that the hooded man had been apprehended - although his personal details were never released to the public. But, he was certainly plagiarising from posted comments on the internet. Myself and Tom Voigt, in particular. And much of it seemed to surround the movement of the Greetings from Ireland electronic card, from zodiackillermystery.freeforums.net to zodiackiller.com , for debate.

So, it looks like the hooded man had a sense of Zodiac history, with the Pleasanton link ?

I've made mention of this episode before: Simply, that I contacted Pleasanton PD around February 2019, after witnessing crying and frightened children on TV News programs. Pointing out to Pleasanton PD the Greetings from Ireland card, and accompanying comments. Including in particular, a poster called ''briangotback''. Then phoned up Senator Feinstein's office, just to let them know what was going on.

Strangely perhaps, it was 24 hours after one particular visit paid to Diablo Valley College by the hooded man, that ''Game-on-gate'' happened. I often wonder if Voigt knew more than he was letting on ? But, it certainly looks as if he annoyed the cops - possibly unwilling to help them with their inquiries.

He would have to speak for himself. But, coincidentally, Det Terry Poyser was suspended by the VPD at exactly the same time, and Voigt had been assisting Poyser, then.

A full solution to the mystery remains to this day.

The Pleasanton connection is unusual Rubi, because we didn't just have one person identifying somebody as the Zodiac Killer on the weekend of March 13th 1971, but numerous callers saying they thought they had spotted Zodiac in Dublin. On the face of it, one could argue that this lends credence to the Zodiac sketch when a Zodiac letter arrived shortly afterwards. However, without recordings of the many phone calls, how do we know this wasn't the Zodiac Killer making those calls as a prelude to the letter. If it wasn't Zodiac, then it's extremely curious indeed.

In terms of the 2018 and 2019 occurrences, I can only suspect that somebody was playing sinister games based upon the events of the past. Who this or these individuals were will probably never see the light of day, so I would be pulling things out of thin air to even speculate. I suspect the 2001 card was from Zodiac (possibly), but beyond that I doubt anything else arrived, other than a few fantasists wasting police time. Unfortunately, there is simply not enough information on these later events to give a qualified answer. I'm not over-confident on the observations I've suggested in the article, but the headline using "satirical" caught my eye. The next article today will look at the deliberate switching of vowels in the Exorcist letter when he wrote "saterical comidy".

Yes, Richard, I go with the Jan 10th 2001 New Years card as Zodiac authentic - 100%.

Paul Avery died December 10th 2000.
Randolph Apperson Hearst died December 18th 2000.

I believe it was a ''pilgrimage'', as such, for the Zodiac. Paying a visit for old time's sake. Long moved on.

Claudia Stine, widow of Paul, died December 4th 2024, in Milton Wisconsin.

Age 81. Never remarried.

Yes, I've already seen it and I totally understand why she remained single. Commitment is to be applauded. May she rest in peace.

You know, I don't think the "exocist" letter was written by the real Zodiac, it's most likely a fake. Look closely at the original letters from the real Zodiac and those sent after 1970 and you will see that the handwriting is different and the meaning is not very similar to the originals. People attribute a lot of things to the Zodiac that he did not do or write. For example, there is no evidence that he killed Cherry Joe and the composite sketch of the killer and suspects is just nonsense. About the photofit of the killer, for example: this is how every man looked in America in the 60s and to suspect everyone who wears glasses and short hair is just ridiculous. Believe me - thinking rationally, without any fantasies in this case is the most important thing.
