HER BOOK, HER OMEN OF DEATH

3/20/2025

PictureThe Knoxville News Sentinel
The March 13th 1971 and March 22nd 1971 communications were effectively claiming murders from October 1966 and September 1970. However, the next murder Zodiac would ultimately claim, occurred just four days after the San Francisco, California release of Tom Hanson's "Zodiac Killer" (April 7th 1971). This movie was advertised extensively in the San Francisco Chronicle the week before, and several days after the murder of Kathy Bilek on April 11th 1971 "in the woods" of Villa Montalvo in Saratoga. The movie poster and advertisements carried the wording from the Confession letter, mailed on November 29th 1966 after the Cheri Jo Bates murder, a month earlier. It read "Keep your sisters, daughters and wives off the streets", Or Zodiac Says "I lay awake nights; thinking of my next victim" (see foot of article).

Two days after this movie was advertised in the San Francisco Chronicle on April 13th 1971, a "Zodiac" letter was received at the San Jose Sheriff's Office dated "Thursday", which was April 15th 1971. It was addressed to the "Homicide Inspector". On the same day the movie was advertised in the San Francisco Chronicle (April 13th 1971), newspaper reports from around the country asked the question of whether Zodiac was responsible for the murder of Kathy Bilek (including The Riverside Press), stating "the teenager might be another victim of the Zodiac Killer".

Therefore, we.have the San Francisco Chronicle and The Riverside Press newspapers using the phrases "next victim" and "another victim" on the same day. Followed two days later by a suggested Zodiac letter on April 15th 1971, which the local San Jose newspaper reported as a communication that spoke of "Zodiac" and "another victim". The newspaper also mentioned that the letter told of a girl who works in a hospital, who could be his "next victim". It appears that the author was incorporating phrases from the newspapers into his correspondence, which could demonstrate attentiveness to any story related to the Zodiac Killer. The letter was addressed to the "Homicide Inspector", whereas the threat of a "next victim" in one of the Confession letters from 1966, was addressed to "Homicide Detail". This letter was mailed one month after the Zodiac Killer admitted to "riverside activity" on March 13th 1971, which included a promised "next victim" in Riverside in 1966.

THE LETTER MAILED TO THE SAN JOSE SHERIFF'S OFFICE ON APRIL 15TH 1971
PictureKATHY BILEK, "IN THE WOODS DIES APRIL"
The April 15th 1971 letter wasn't the first time a claimed Zodiac Killer wrote to San Jose law enforcement. A letter was mailed to the San Jose Police Department on November 21st 1969 threatening a widow in San Jose, which resulted in police providing the woman with 24 hours of protection. This current author would not have been aware of that threat, because the November 21st 1969 communication has never been released into the public domain. Unless of course, the current author was the Zodiac Killer - and he wrote both letters.

Another curious feature of the  April 15th 1971 letter, is the suggestion that the "next victim" could be a girl who works in a hospital. On August 1st 1973 the Zodiac Killer seemed to confirm this wish by writing a letter to the Albany Times Union newspaper and threatening that the location of his "next victim" would be the Albany Medical Center in New York. The letter read "You were wrong I am not dead or in the hospital. I am alive and I'm going to start killing again. Below is the name and location of my next victim. But you had better hurry because I'm going to kill her August 10th at 5:00 PM when the shift change". The thought being that the Zodiac Killer was promising to murder a female nurse.

It really is no surprise that in May 1971 and on July 13th 1971, the Zodiac Killer would mail a further two communications laying claim to the murder of Kathy Bilek (18), alongside his previously claimed victims of Kathie Reyne Snoozy (15) and Debra Gaye Furlong (14), murdered in San Jose on August 3rd 1969. And that he would link the May 1971 and August 1st 1973 cryptograms together through ciphertext and plaintext similarities.

PictureTHE OMEN OF DEATH
On Sunday, April 11th 1971, Kathy Bilek (18) visited Villa Montalvo in Saratoga, having planned to read a paperback book (The Gabriel Hounds) and engage in a spot of bird watching in the seclusion of a remote, wooded portion of the park, near a small stream. Her body was found the next day by her father, Charles, while Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputies searched nearby. She had been stabbed 17 times in the back and 32 times in her chest and stomach.

The Gabriel Hounds is a romantic mystery by Mary Stewart, set in Lebanon.
The "Gabriel Hounds" are spectral hounds in folklore, believed to foretell death or misfortune to those who hear their howls, and are associated with the crumbling palace of Dar Ibrahim in the Adonis Valley of Lebanon.

That's a quote worth recording, Richard. For the more seasoned Zodiac followers, I suggest we're hanging around hoping to see a resolution.

Some of us (?) have then promised we will never go near ''True Crime'' again. I feel that way myself - but have a suspicion that I might try one more. Jill Dando comes to mind, since I was fairly sure ''whodunnit'' with hours of her murder.

I would settle for ''just'' the Zodiac Killer, though.

Richard
3/20/2025 04:42:18 pm

I'd settle for that too Rubislaw, but I believed from day one to now, this case will never be solved. I am of course speaking for myself because others who believe they have identified the Zodiac Killer, surely the mystery is over. If I had a suspect and knew 100% I was correct, as many claim they are, I would abandon this case immediately. For me, once the mystery has been answered, there is no mystery left.

Currently, I am more confident than ever that the Zodiac lived within a one mile (more likely 1/2 mile) radius of the BRS payphone, who drove a white 1958 to 1962 Chevrolet Impala, about 40 years and of average height. IF the Zodiac Killer had a registered residence, I believe that the police searching records from 1969 could find the Zodiac Killer inside of one month. But this type of search won't be conducted by them. I believe the killer has been in plain sight all along. But alas, I occupy my time just looking at other aspects of the case, rather than attempting a person search around that payphone to which I have no access from the UK.

Myrta
3/20/2025 05:53:51 pm

Richard, what I struggle with is even if we could obtain access to the identities of every single person living in the area near the phone, who drove that type of car and happened to be in the suspected age range, how could this person be directly tied to any of the crimes?

Richard
3/21/2025 01:13:47 am

I suppose it depends on what your beliefs on the DNA and fingerprints are Myrta. After identifying a man about 40, 5'8" to 5'11", whp drove such a vehicle, I would first use the partial bloody fingerprints from October 11th 1969 to make sure he's not excluded. Then I would use the DNA from the 1978 letter to identify him or eliminate him. Of course, if that DNA was only partial, it could only be used to either include him or exclude him. We would need more obviously, so that is where his profession, age appropriate photographs and handwriting could be used. After this and a little more digging, it may not satisfy a criminal prosecution but it may satisfy me beyond a reasonable doubt. Even if I wasn't fully convinced, the weight of circumstance may be enough for me to conclude that we have likely found the killer. But I do believe there is likely DNA on other letters such as the 1986/1987 letters (and others) that haven't been tested to my knowledge, because they have been wrongly labelled hoaxes.

Cragle
3/20/2025 04:48:15 pm

The “Girl dies in woods” articles is interesting in context with the Monticello pasted letter. The phrasing does seem to match quite closely

Richard
3/20/2025 05:03:11 pm

There are multiple Bilek articles where the Zodiac likely cut the phrase "in the woods", with "April" literally on every article. The final proof behind the meaning behind the card came on September 18th 1973, not that I needed it Cragle. Others can make up their own mind on the authenticity of these communications, but for me the book on this one was closed a long time ago. As I've always said Cragle, all we should ask of people is applying the same standard when deciding on the authenticity of a communication. But this is rarely the approach.

Richard
3/20/2025 05:07:48 pm

I think the latter two communications in 1971 literally tie the entire case together, despite not even seeing the July card.

Richard link
3/20/2025 05:42:04 pm

A Catholic priest gave Kathy Bilek's eulogy at her Rosary and used the very words "in the woods". It would have been just like Zodiac to have used this phrase from this particular newspaper article. Click my name for link.

The Zodiac appears to have been such a sponge, Richard. Absorbing and utilizing words and phrases from ''all over''.

I wonder if he actually had a photographic memory. Or, was well organized and kept a file going. A bit like Mr Voigt and his glove puppets. He must have to keep track of them ?

Okay Richard, the following is about numerous "WOW-beauties". So it must be just the right stuff for England's Nosferatu to bury his teeth into:)

I've seen so many “Z-vids” in the last four weeks so that I can't remember where I saw the original black and white footage of Ray's cab, but I do remember seeing that book title described below on the passenger seat in one of those historic reels. The memory of Ray's cab came back immediately when I read today Richard's article and learned that Kathy had also a book with her.

!!! Unverified Informations !!!

Rumor has it that a book was found on the passenger seat of the murdered cab driver, Ray Davis. If this information is true at all, then it is most likely a book that Davis himself bought to read during breaks at work... but what if Davis never bought or read this book, what if his killer left it behind as an, back then, untraceable “calling card”?

"This case couldn't have been more up Shell Scott's alley. Twelve naked, luscious beauties, one for each month of the year, were Scott's next assignment. They were called the "Wow" pinup girls and, man, were they wow! Scott's find four freckles. Four freckles located on one of these tomatoes' tushies. That was the only clue Scott had to help him solve this murder. But not to worry, it's the perfect mixture of business and pleasure for Shell Scott, P.I."

Richard
3/21/2025 01:36:15 am

The Ray Davis case is certainly one worth examining in respect to Zodiac, but not a case for me that has come near to being placed in a probable Zodiac pile. There just isn't enough information to get our teeth into. The obvious difference between the books found by the bodies in each case, is one was brought to the crime scene by the victim, whereas we have question marks over the book "Dance With the Dead", despite "death" being a component feature of both mystery novels. That is the big question Zodcom, was the book owned by Ray Davis, or was it accidentally or deliberately left at the crime scene by the killer - and if so - for what purpose. Have we any other US cases where a book was discovered alongside a body?

ZODCOM

"Have we any other US cases where a book was discovered alongside a body?"

I can't answer that, because I'm not interested in any other case(s) except TZC.

"...and if so - for what purpose."

In 1960, nobody knew what else a 12, whether abstractly depicted/left behind or not, could mean. 12 = Zodiac. This time a “silent/hidden” calling card for “things to come” and yet right under our noses since the year of 1960. Ray's murder case could not be linked to something that was not even known to exist in year 1960.

ZOD,13.03.71: “...but they are only finding the easy ones [ZVICs]...”

At first glance, this just looks like an ordinary statement or observation, but none of his known crime scenes were “easy” and certainly not “clean to reconstruct”. This is not a dry statement, this is a resounding laughter when he wrote it!

Another one of his "yet unknown" funnies. Rich, do you know who his 'slaves for afterlife' really are? People like you, Rubi, me, and everybody else which dealt with TZC for more then two hours! Problem is, once you reach that limit you can't refund a thing, and you don't even want to refund because he showed you already it's worth to keep going on - CATCH22 - he invented it. Even before Joseph Heller knew about, in the truest sense of the even deeper meaning of that concept. That's the true TOP-LAYER thingy about "the thing" he talks about every 3 minutes.

Somebody else left that book there and poor Ray Davis is highlikely your "patient zero" ZVIC!

That all sounds & looks pretty much "KOOKOO" to you?
Well, you are right, because it is!
Now, just delete two "Os" and you are right there on the same wavelenght and frequency he is/was.

Can I prove that any of this is the highest possible version of the most logical truths when I look at it through Zodiac's weird ways of combining / expressing / communicating? Of course not. What did this kind of guy do else from 1960-1966 I would like to know? It cannot be just those few on one hand countable cases we already suspect he was somehow involved...where most of them have nokind of any real "Zodiac Weirdness" factored into/around them. This one has, in my opinion, and alot of it too.

Although I am not drawn into any specific links, other than attraction to the Zodiac's attraction to CATCH-22, my last new post on the Halloween card:

''A further observation on the four dots represented in the Zodiac's ''special signature'' : If they are interpreted as two dice showing a ''double 2'' - then check what is showing at their bases - i.e. what is masked from view ? ''.

I remember playing Clue as a young kid and wanting to be the one to solve the murder in that big house. Even then, we youngins were enthralled with the idea of a "Whodunit?". It's something innate in our human condition and so there will be other cases that intrigue (albeit not to the same level of obsession) once the last Zodiac rabbit hole has been explored and we finally lay it to rest, solved or unsolved.

Rubislaw32 link
3/21/2025 01:07:17 pm

Yes, Myrta - and many of us have a more personalized interpretation, also.

Example: Lake Herman Road.

It was the Zodiac, in a same-model car as his Secret Pa, with his Secret Pa's replicated car number plates.

There are certainly indications that Les Lundblad concluded the same as me. But, whereas I think the Zodiac's Secret Pa was William Joseph Grant - Les Lundblad thought the Zodiac to be simply a casual male lover of Grant, attempting to fit Grant up for the young couple.

C.G.Jung & Freud + Fromm
3/21/2025 03:20:40 pm

Vallejo seems to have been a pretty solid and hip place for homos & pedos back then. Dear Arthur lived there with his mommy. Then there were the Grants, a cheerful gay family that was very popular. Siegfried & Roy also lived there, but completely incognito. What can I say, Vallejo was a gay paradise. The gas station attendant, the baker, the tailor, the kiosk man, the milkman were all gay as hell...if hetero yourself you could only go crazy and become a serial...killing hetero couples.

Rubislaw32 link
3/21/2025 04:23:58 pm

Very interesting, Jung & Freud & Fromm. It certainly seemed a liberal place. Perhaps (?) contributed to, with a high and steady population of transient workers, with ship building & refurbishment and refinery construction the sorts of projects ongoing in the vicinity.

It brings to mind that, from what I have been able to establish, Vallejo was the (albeit illegal) gambling capital of the Bay area. Businessmen and off-duty cops quite happily rubbing shoulders with each other, with the many gaming establishments there. Simply ''contained'' and observed by local PD's.

So, when we hear word in the Zodiac tale, of gaming - we shouldn't be so swift as to start looking towards Tahoe, Carson City and Reno. No - it was actually ''happening'' in Vallejo.

ZODCOM³
3/22/2025 07:53:52 am

@Rubi

...and do you know, Rubi, who “advised” Les Lundblad when he was at the end of his latinum and had ZERO idea what was going on at LHR?

Rubislaw32 link
3/22/2025 08:25:05 am

That comes down to a letter conveyed to Lyndon Lafferty - where the message from Lundblad was, that Lafferty should not give up on pursuing William Grant as a suspect.

Lafferty liked to show this letter off, as evidence that Lundblad thought that Grant was Zodiac.

Lafferty was mistaken. All the indications are, that Lundblad believed that Grant ''would lead investigators to the Zodiac''. It would be a case of being patient, and either hoping Grant would break down and admit to associations with a man (Zodiac) who was persecuting him (Grant). Or, keep a watch on Grant, to see if this ''Zodiac guy'' eventually turned up.

Sadly, Lundblad didn't see this happen. Vallejo PD, after Darlene's murder, were given permission by CA DOJ to carry out a surveillance operation on Grant - which Vallejo PD managed to blow.

Disaster - and Grant took LE to court for police harassment, citing Vallejo PD - and won. Thereafter, Grant could never be touched again.

William Grant, Zodiac suspect 1968-1973. Effectively, Grant's Zodiac suspect status became ''illegal''.

Thank you for the long and detailed answer, it's rare that an investigator doesn't lie creatively for whatever reasons.

Rubi, something else, something very decisive happened even earlier than the whole involvement with Lafferty and his POIs. Lundblad and his men turned the whole of Vallejo upside down, followed all the clues and in the end, after months, they were at the end of their tether. Who did Lundblad then call for help, or who offered to help him of their own accord? Do you know anything about that?
