DREW BEESON AND ROSS GERACI - GAVIOTA

6/24/2024

PictureDrew Beeson, author of "Sighting in on the Zodiac Killer". Click image for book.
Drew Beeson, host of the Zodcast YouTube channel, and Ross Geraci, creator of the Planet X Filmworks YouTube channel, had an excellent discussion on the Gaviota Beach murders of Robert Domingos and Linda Edwards on June 4th 1963, briefly touching on the press release by Sheriff John Carpenter in November 1972. They were almost certainly correct when considering the reasoning behind the press release and who it was about. The conversation covered all aspects of the double murder in great depth, including a potential link to the Zodiac Killer crimes in the Bay Area of northern California. The YouTube video has a running time of 2 hours and five minutes. Please subscribe to their channels and click the bell for notifications of future releases.

There are two key statements within the press release that reveal why Sheriff John Carpenter believed Arthur Leigh Allen was probably responsible for the murders of Robert Domingos and Linda Edwards at Canada Del Molino in Santa Barbara. When referencing the double murder, the 1972 press release stated "Over a year ago, Sheriff's Detectives began a thorough study of the case, examining and re-evaluating all aspects of the crime". But why did they re-evaluate the Gaviota Beach murders just over a year ago? The press release was issued early November 1972, so just "over a year ago" could be interpreted as being August or September 1971, when on August 4th 1971 Sgt. Jack Mulanax, Inspector David Toschi and Inspector Bill Armstrong traveled to Pinole, California to interview Arthur Leigh Allen at his workplace. This was preceded by a July 19th 1971 report naming Arthur Leigh Allen as a possible Zodiac suspect, and a March 13th 1971 Zodiac letter implying he had committed more murders down south.

PictureArthur Leigh Allen
The second statement read "We have information, to be investigated further, which may place him in the Santa Barbara area in 1963". Without knowing who the Zodiac was in 1972, how could they possibly hope to place him in the Santa Barbara area in 1963? The simple answer is that they had received pertinent information from Bay Area investigators following their interview with Arthur Leigh Allen just "over a year ago". Arthur Leigh Allen was clearly under suspicion for the Zodiac murders, with the murder of a couple in Santa Barbara an obvious avenue of investigation, based upon Allen's proximity to the crime and his Lake Berryessa statements.

Gian Quasar, an avid Zodiac researcher, wrote "Native Lompoc son, Mike McVicar, remembers Leigh Allen well. Allen struck him as being really weird. But McVicar being a car aficionado, and Allen being quite a car buff, they did go to a few car shows together. McVicar, however, remembers that Leigh lived in Lompoc before 1963. McVicar, and so many others, were also used to seeing Leigh at the local public pool, where he was the lifeguard. McVicar recalls what so many others have recalled about Allen.that “For a fat guy, he was a really good diver". Tom Voigt's website details that from "1959-1962: Allen, attempting to gain his teaching credential, was hired by Santa Rosa Elementary in Atascadero, Calif". Santa Rosa Elementary is 58 miles north of Lompoc and 50 miles north of the Vandenberg Air Force Base Exchange where the ammunition may have been purchased that killed Robert and Linda. Gian Quasar has already concluded that Sheriff John Carpenter was referring to Allen in the press release, stating "It seems unquestionable that Carpenter was referring to Leigh Allen. It wouldn’t have been difficult for Carpenter to have established that Leigh Allen once lived in a trailer near Lompoc". Where exactly he was living is unknown, but its proximity to the Vandenberg Air Force Base, which is 30 miles (by crow) northwest of the Domingos & Edwards crime scene, may have peaked his interest. But there is more.

Picture
Picture
If Mike McVicar knew Allen well enough to go to a few car shows together, it must be highlighted that Michael Lee McVicar (who died in 2020 aged 76) was a long time resident of Lompoc, who bought Jeffers Muffler Shop at 126 N F St in 1979, which he ran for 33 years. He had previously worked for Johns Manville in Lompoc from 1964 to 1978. His passion for racing cars overlapped with that of Allen's, and he liked roaming the hills of Miguelito Canyon, catching fish and frogs in the creeks, as well as surfing nearby beaches. Just 10 miles north of the Vandenberg Air Force Base was the Santa Maria drag racing strip, situated at West Foster and Mitchell roads.

It is doubtful investigators overlooked the possibility that if Allen was loosely acquainted with Michael McVicar, there was a good chance that Arthur Leigh Allen may have visited Lompoc many times prior to, and during 1963, relevant to the time period of the murders. The newspaper cutting on the left from the Lompoc Record on May 15th 1963 mentioned the Lompoc Sports Car Club, who not only sponsored a hare and hound rally in the city that same day, but ran other tours and motor events monthly, including a club meeting on the last Sunday of each month. That meeting in 1963 would have taken place on June 30th. Something such as this could have placed Allen in the Lompoc area in the days or weeks prior to the Gaviota Beach murders, had his common interest in car racing with McVicar extended to these functions.

It is extremely likely that the interest shown in Allen by investigators in the Bay Area, coupled with his
Santa Rosa Elementary and Lompoc connections, were the driving force behind the press release of Sheriff John Carpenter in 1972. Allen's admission in a 1971 interview to having bloody knives in his possession the day of the Lake Berryessa attack, when Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepard were bound and brutally stabbed on September 27th 1969, must also have peaked their interest with respect to the Domingos & Edwards murders.

If there was a possibility that Allen, strongly suspected in 1971 to be the Zodiac Killer, could be placed in the Lompoc area, 30 miles northwest of a double murder in 1963, that bore similarities to the Lake Berryessa attack in the mind of investigators, it may explain the confidence expressed within the press release when they wrote "we have found that there appears to be a high degree of probability that this subject is responsible for the double murder in our county". That "subject" being Arthur Leigh Allen. This confidence may have been premature, and might explain why no follow up to this press release has ever seen the light of day.

Excellent article Richard, unbelievable there is never a follow up to this press release. Bare minimum i would have expected SOMETHING from Baker, and they shut down my FOIA. unreal!

I imagine that when Allen was "ruled out" with handwriting, fingerprints and ballistics, the initial enthusiasm down south went particularly cold. Did the initial excitement over Allen affect their judgment?

Seldom seen such humble and pleasant guys as you Ross and Drew. Just one thing about this "him" in the sheriffs report you talked about, which Drew dragged on about. Just change "him" to Zodiac and i think that what the report is saying. You Ross was amazing when you talked about the weapons and that the sounds most probably would stay in the canyon.

Also, i don't know "exactly" how strong you got to be to drag a big body around, because i guess that a smaller person could ( perhaps ) do it with a bit of extra time.

One thing i have thought about. If this is Zodiac, didn't he know that
he couldn't start a fire without petrol? I perfectly understand at Beryessa for example that he took for granted that the stabbing would kill bryan, but couldn't he have known that he needed some petrol to create a fire? Sometimes criminals may start a fire to hide something, perhaps something sexual in nature.

I personally think that he wasn't that planned at all, and that he tried to start a fire with the intent to erase evidence ( for example fingerprints ), but that he hadn't or didn't have the smartness to understand that he needed petrol. He shot them alright but either it was somewhat ( or didn't go as expected ) unplanned ( then it could be Zodiac ). If it was planned it wasn't Zodiac or a young stupid Zodiac.

You talk about blood aswell? I am not so good at english, but maybe something happened and it didn't go as planned, that's why he needed to light the fire.

Who knows how criminals think, but there is no need to burn down a shack to erase fingerprints because many people used the shack. Like taxicab fingerprints they could have been placed there by anybody unconnected to the crime. Bloody fingerprints are a different matter. Everyday fingerprints discovered inside the shack would not be enough to convict somebody, however, they could lead investigators to your door. But as long as you had disposed of the weapon in 1963 there would be very little to nothing to incriminate you. Somebody weak could move those bodies - and like you said would take longer - so what was the reward of hiding them from sight. The reward should outweigh the risk. That reward could be sexual in the privacy of the shack. Also, we don't know how many perpetrators there were that day. There could have been one shooter and one accomplice, who could easily have carried or pulled the bodies together, no matter how weak. Although drag marks would lean towards one responsible.

Allen is ruled out it seems with almost everything and they haven't found anytihing whatsoever, but this you tell about the missed schoolday.

Have you checked the other teachers schedules, maybe the day after this type of crime at the school, classes needed to get canceled, but if not and he had no reason to miss school, then maybe he is in a Zodiac gang with Cheney or something like that, you never know...

My final verdict on this, is that someone stationed himself at the beach with a small gun (
easy carry and low sound ) and hoped someone would enter into his territory. I guess this
individual might have had several nights before in waiting mode at this beach or other places
when nothing materialised.

If we go further into a possible motive, the cut clothes of Linda could give us a
clue of a sexual motive. I think that trying to burn down the shed could be both to conceal
the sexual component, but also to show the world that he is in control and don't want anybody else
have the bodies because they are his and his alone.

As Richard mentions i don't believe that he wanted to erase evidence, i think instead it might be
perhaps those two components i already mentioned, why he tried to burn down the shed.

I believe the left ammo and ropes could be his last chance at arrogance, because he couln't burn the shed, but
he is still omnipotent, owns the world and will place his ammo and things wherever he wants to.

Sure this individual may have been Zodiac. Still i can't really get around that the real Zodiac
wouldn't have used petrol. If it was Zodiac, maybe the burning attempt was an afterthought. But i can
easily see a sexual perpetrator forget about these things however planned he is, but then he might be
lacking in rational IQ. It's so many things to think about when doing a crime….

Any thoughts? ( By the way, the cutting around the upper body to Linda and the letter about Cheri Bates
sounds somewhat similar, but sure, this is just a shoot at the moon or less )

Fascinating article, Richard. One thing that should be noted (as a 65 year native of this area) is that the actual drive between the two locations you focus on, Lompoc and Atascadero, is significantly longer than 58 crow miles--it's actually 78.5 miles by car.

Further, just generally these two areas are not commonly linked for a variety of.cultural, historical and geographical reasons (and of course it's another 30 miles down to Gaviota Beach making the total distance over 100 miles).

None of this is to say that Allen couldn't be involved or that McVicar is mistaken in his statements but there were far closer target rich areas for him during his stint in Atascadero than Santa Barbara County.

Richard
6/24/2024 02:16:25 pm

Good points Scott. The journey by crow can distort certain distances depending on the commuter routes. I personally have nothing invested regarding Allen as the Zodiac Killer. I have never considered him a viable suspect, but if Sheriff Carpenter had reason to believe Allen spent time in Lompoc, I can see how they have put two and two together to make five. I don't obviously know if investigators ever spoke to McVicar to get any background on Allen, or even knew of him, but I would hope they had more on Allen than just location to boldly claim what they did in the press release. Could they place Allen closer than Lompoc?

Scott Norton
6/26/2024 03:45:27 pm

I'm agnostic on Allen. If researchers like Graysmith are to be believed, he did play rope a dope with being a "leading" Zodiac suspect to various friends and his brother Ron and his wife do seem to have suspected him and spoken to Lynch and Mullanax and perhaps other cops about him. And then of course there's Cheney and Sandy P.

It's a fitful, unreliable cast of characters so who knows. But the Atascadero-Lompoc-Gaviota "connection" for me isn't very strong.

Johnny
6/27/2024 10:34:10 am

He fits, and it could be someone similar, but they haven't found a thing on him. I think if it was whoever (innocent person ) checked besides him, maybe they would atleast have found some circumstantial evidence, but not so with Allen. To be guilty maybe he lived up in the moon and got down for the crimes?

Besides the nonexistent physical evidence, the witnesses ( if we generalise their comments ) almost seems to laugh when Allen is mentioned. I haven't heard one single thing connecting him with the crimes that is atleast somewhat substantial. Graysmith i think is a politician, a smart one and in private i don't believe he ever thought Allen was the Zodiac.
