Did the Zodiac Killer revel in an egotistical nature, craving attention via his anonymous correspondence, or was he simply misanthropic to the point where his life became quest like, shown in the traits of killers like Ted Kaczynski, whose disdain for the modern world drove him to the point of self destruction, retreating to near anonymity in his isolated wood cabin in the quiet backdrop of Lincoln, Montana, however exposing the world around him to fear and murder. The only problem being, we know the reason, albeit incomprehensible to most of us, for the guiding hand of Theodore Kaczynski, but as yet the true motive behind Northern California's elusive killer remains speculative at best, and by motive, one means his reasons however abhorrent or meaningless they may appear to any rational human being.
Was the Zodiac suffering from a severe case of inflated self importance. It is easy to believe this going by his incessant jockeying with the authorities and the apparent mockery he appeared to relish in when communicating with publications such as the San Francisco Chronicle. But there are many instances where he failed to 'capitalize' on his new found infamy, despite claims he was annoyed by the lack of front page coverage, that may suggest an ulterior motive.
Despite his literary verbosity, the Zodiac Killer from the Lake Herman Road attack onward, never addressed his victims by name and seemed to reserve his resentment and dislike towards the newspapers, investigators and police, taunting them with details of his crimes and his ability to evade capture.
Within the November 8th 1969 Dripping Pen Card/340 Cipher he states 'Des, July, Aug, Sept, Oct = 7'. If we take this chronologically as Lake Herman Road, Blue Rock Springs, Lake Berryessa and Presidio Heights as five victims, there appears two victims missing, at least one of which had to be from August and since this was prior to the Lake Berryessa Attack on September 27th 1969, why did he fail to write it on the car door of Bryan Hartnell's Karmann Ghia after the brutal stabbing of the couple. A careless omission by a killer apparently driven by an insatiable ego.
Or are these two murders too close to home to pinpoint the exact date, and consequently left out by design
The costume driven attack at Lake Berryessa appeared his 'starring role', but other than writing it on Bryan Hartnell's car door, failed to follow up his theatrical performance with any literary acknowledgment. He occasionally mentioned his crimes, but failed to mention far more, either because they were never committed or his overriding desire was a strike against officialdom and the murders were actually secondary to his grand scheme of derision towards authority, which some killers form after rejection from a profession or parental bond.
Ted Kaczynski drafted Industrial Society and its Future for publication, stating his bombing campaign would cease if this criteria was met. The Zodiac was merely industrial, stating 'If you do not print this cipher by the afternoon of Fry.1st of Aug 69, I will go on a kill ram-Page Fry. night. I will cruse around all weekend killing lone people in the night then move on to kill again, until I end up with a dozen people over the weekend'. Both murderers were attempting to hold authorities hostage to their demands, the only difference was that Ted Kaczynski, unbeknownst to him, was inadvertently releasing his identity, something the Zodiac Killer has so far managed to avoid.
In short the linking of these crimes, under a banner of 'the Zodiac had more hatred towards the women, rather than the male victims' seems to have little foundation. The act of violence as a substitute for sexual desire can be literally attributed across the board in many criminal acts and there seems little to support this. The suggestion he feared the male companion the most in his encounters is primarily common sense for survival, and it is often said, he seemed to enjoy killing and bragging about his attacks to the newspapers. But how can we separate bragging from the attempted humiliation of authority in this case.
The question being did the Zodiac have an attention issue, basking in his new found notoriety, or was his motive an insatiable derision of the world around him, something closer to 04475 046.
