The Zodiac enthusiasts and there are an ever increasing amount with every passing year, who in their innocent desire to unearth the next revelation or theory regarding a suspect or cipher are transcended into a world where often rational thinking goes out of the window, with their unwavering desire to to mould the facts around their suspect in an attempt to keep him on track despite the ever increasing evidence to the contrary. Rather than acquiring the facts and then searching for a suspect based on solid proven techniques many get presented with a suspect as in the case of Goldcatcher's Richard Gaikowski as an example, subsequently learning about his life, then taking segments of his 'biography' and then choosing the ones that could implicate him in the notorious Zodiac crimes to the complete disregard to the facts that
There has been much said about Gaikowski from his involvement with the Good Times publications, its production day, the running of Zodiac headlines and the promotion of such things as the Mikado via free advertisements and his connection to the Roxie Theatre during the infamous Zodiac letters referencing films of the day, plus Gaikowski's voice being pinpointed by Nancy Slover, one of the few people to have spoken directly to the killer, as the self same voice as the person who left a sinister phoned message back on July 5th1969.
But there were possibly thousands of people living in that area of San Francisco who frequented the movie's, and could loosely match the composite sketches of the Zodiac, that are in all likelihood inaccurate due to being compiled by witnesses from 60 feet away, at approximately 10.00pm in the evening and hampered by poor visibility, plus judging hair colour, weight and height would prove difficult even for a trained observer in dim lighting and could never carry any evidentiary value.
In 2008 Nancy Slover then 65 years of age listened to a recording of Richard Gaikowski which left an eerie chill down her spine and god forbid nobody can discredit her belief but nearly 40 years had passed and just like composite sketching only days after an incident can be wildly inaccurate, so can voice recognition never mind decades later, bearing in mind as we age we lose the clarity of sound due to a lifelong exposure to everyday noise, even assuming the killer never disguised or manufactured his voice during his chilling call.
Gaikowski's handwriting samples showed little consistency, but in 1986 had been thrust into the spotlight by an anonymous alias who's credibility is less than watertight, according to Ken Narlow and many others.
Other suspects have dominated the newswires and internet since 1986 with most discredited other than a few flimsy coincidences that get metamorphosed into something far uglier, that being a relentless pursuit of individuals who may not offer the world any more than a persistent self defence in the face of spurious insinuations and allegations instigated by the ultimate desire of certain individuals to promote a new Zodiac theory, off the back of someone else's misery and as a result does nothing more than blur the lines of investigation off on a wild tangent to the ultimate truth.
When the ego of the investigator or amateur sleuth becomes greater than the objective of discovering who the real Zodiac killer is, a new and more dangerous cocktail is formed, one of self publicity that leaves the shadows masking California's most publicised serial killer widening with every passing year as his identity gets more immersed into folklore rather than facts.
