Nancy Patricia Gidley (24) was last seen alive on Thursday July 12th 1973 leaving the Rodeway Inn at 895 Geary Street, San Francisco, forever synonymous with the likely area that Paul Stine collected his final passenger, before being callously gunned down in the Presidio Heights district, almost four years earlier on October 11th 1969. Her body was found on Sunday 15th July 1973, nude and strangled in the grounds of George Washington High School in the Richmond area, although it was believed she was murdered elsewhere.
Formerly stationed at Hamilton Air Force Base for four years, until the early months 1972, Miss Gidley an X-ray technician, arrived in San Francisco in mysterious circumstances, supposedly invited to be the maid of honor at a wedding, which apparently nobody was able to verify. Before leaving her home in Idaho, she also told close friends her intention to work as a freelance writer at the Chronicle Newspaper, but staff at the Chronicle, again, had never heard of her.
This murder was only the tip of the iceberg, that began 47 days earlier, when the body of Rosa Vasquez (20) was discovered close to the Arguello boulevard entrance of the Golden Gate Park on May 29th 1973. She had been strangled and thrown from the nearby road. Almost three years earlier Donna Ann Lass disappeared from the Sahara Tahoe Hotel on September 6th 1970 after finishing her shift as a nurse. A few months earlier in June she had moved to South Lake Tahoe, from San Francisco, where she had previously been employed as a nurse at the Letterman General Hospital in the Presidio, near the Paul Stine murder scene. Curiously Rosa Vasquez was also employed at the Letterman General Hospital as a keypunch operator.
A keypunch is a device for delivering punch holes at specific locations on a card face, to carry information for a relevant task. This was apparent on two cards possibly sent by the Zodiac Killer, when the 13 Hole Postcard was received on October 5th 1970, along with the Pines Card on March 22nd 1971, albeit prior to the murder of Rosa Vasquez. She was also a resident of 834 Bush Street, close to the collective of the Good Times newspaper at 2377 Bush Street, where Zodiac suspect Richard Gaikowski worked as an editor for the publication, although the Good Times had produced its last offering by the turn of 1973.
Twelve days later, a pregnant Yvonne Quilantang (15), from Delta Street
was found strangled in a Bayview district
vacant lot on June 12th 1973. She had been out to buy groceries.
Finally, Angela Thomas (16), a resident of Belton, Texas, had traveled to San Francisco for brief stay. After a day out in Hayward, she visited friends in the Presidio district, but neither of her friends were at home and she was last seen walking away at 9.00pm on Sunday July 1st 1973. She was found naked and smothered the following day in the grounds of Benjamin Franklin Junior High School.
All four had a military connection, a trait often associated with the Zodiac Killer, due to a number of factors, including the Wing Walker footprint impressions taken from the Lake Berryessa crime scene and possible links to the Vandenberg Air Force Base, due to the lot number of the unspent ammunition at the scene of the Domingos/Edwards murders in 1963
Nancy Gidley was stationed at Hamilton Air Force Base, Marin County. Rosa Vasquez was a keypunch operator at Letterman Army Hospital. The father of Angela Thomas was an army sergeant, previously based in the Presidio. And Yvonne Quilantang was having a relationship with a soldier out of Missouri.
There is no evidence to suggest that any of these four victims were Zodiac crimes, although there is enough evidence to suggest that these four murders may have been committed by a single perpetrator, due to numerous similarities, within such a short time frame.
Some researchers believe that Lawrence Kane and the Zodiac Killer may be one and the same, trailing Donna Lass from San Francisco to South Lake Tahoe. Having lived at 217 Eddy Street, close to Mason and Geary Streets in San Francisco at the time of the Paul Stine murder and latterly working near Donna Lass at the Sahara Tahoe Hotel, according to former law enforcement officer Harvey Hines. Is it possible he returned in 1973 ! . Two possible murders, that of Donna Lass and Rosa Vasquez from the same hospital, inside of three years, seems unusual to say the least, albeit probably coincidental. The Red Dragon Card
of April 28th 1970, the possible depiction of Don Quixote and the 1912 statue of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra at Golden Gate Park, the site where Rosa Vasquez's body was found. Employed at the Letterman Army Hospital as a key punch operator, and the 13 Hole Postcard. On October 11th 1969 Paul Stine's murderer was believed to have hailed the cab somewhere near Mason and Geary Streets. Later a Halloween Card was sent to the San Francisco Chronicle, depicting a skeleton, on the inside of the card, believed by some, to portray how Paul Stine's body was laying out of the cab, at the corner of Washington Street.Nancy Gidley was seen for the last time leaving the Rodeway Inn at 895 Geary Street. She was an X-ray technician, performing the imaging of the human body. She was discovered on July 15th 1973 in the grounds of the George Washington High School.Angela Thomas, last seen in the Presidio in 1973. Her father was once stationed at the Presidio, along with the strong military connection of at least three of the four victims. Is it possible the Zodiac Killer was drawing from his previous cards and crimes, to inspire his future atrocities, as detailed above. With near certainty NO, it is just simple coincidence. But did the Zodiac Killer still continue his reign of terror, beyond the murder of Paul Stine on October 11th 1969......that is for you to decide.
The Zodiac Killer sent many letters, cards and ciphers in the late 1960's and early 1970's, the majority of which held some sort of clue or hidden message, to the mind and motivations behind his campaign of terror spanning at least five years.
The murderer appeared to employ a tactic of mind games with the police and authorities, that he clearly seemed to revel in and this was more apparent than ever, when the Halloween Card
landed on the desk of the San Francisco Chronicle on October 27th 1970.
This card, if indeed, it was sent by the Zodiac Killer, was perceived to be a direct threat to Paul Avery, a reporter at the San Francisco Chronicle, on the basis it was addressed directly to him and suggested or proclaimed a fourteenth victim within its design. This may have been the case, but what was the inspiration behind the card and what messages lay hidden, just out of sight.
The card and envelope had some interesting features, but what were the driving forces behind them, notably the strange symbol on the envelope and at the foot of the card once opened, the writing of sorry no cipher inside of the envelope, the 14 on the skeletons hand, the 4-TEEN inside the card and the underlined section LAV on Paul Averley contained within the address on the envelope.
The following short explanation is an example solution, showing how the mind of this killer may have worked, although whether this is right or wrong, is not the important part to this story.
It has been said before that the Halloween Card skeleton on the inside of the card is positioned similarly to the way Paul Stine's body is resting out of the taxi, with the mask covering the eyes, similar to the blacked out section over the crime scene photographs of Paul Stine, shown here in a video
by Zodiac researcher Kevin Robert Brooks on his Youtube channel. Plus the tree could be representing Julius Khan Park, and the Zodiac hiding in the trees. The ME element of PEEK A BOO YOU ARE DOOMED is larger than the rest of the writing, suggesting that the eye in the knothole is indeed him.
But I was curious to whether anything else on the card was pointing to the Presidio Heights murder.
There are only two numbered sections on the card
1. The number 14 on the hand.
2. The 4-TEEN on the inside of the card..
The 14 has 3 fingers raised above it 14+3=17
Inside the card we have to question why he doesn't just write the number 14, instead of 4-TEEN
I think this is the second part of the clue in this particular example.
A TEEN is a person who reaches the age of 13, so we now have 4-13 or 413
Now we place the two sets of figures together in order and hey presto 17413
, the license plate number of Paul Stines taxi.
But as stated earlier, whether this is right or wrong has no bearing to the reason behind this article.
The Zodiac Killer has been portrayed as somebody, who draws pleasure from his cryptic conundrums and wordplay, but he must, as we all are, have been influenced by something or somebody that drives this compulsion.
His apparent liking for mystery and suspense novels such as Charlie Chan and The Most Dangerous Game have been touted as two of his possible influences, along with a liking for the Gilbert and Sullivan's stage play, The Mikado. But what about this card.
Lets take a look at the strange symbol on the Halloween Card envelope
. Both the skeletons hand and the text 4-TEEN, suggest numbers, so why should the strange symbol on the envelope be any different. The other two read 14, so by inference it is only logical to take the F part of the symbol as fourteen also. We appear therefore to have a joined 7 and 14, along with four dots. So lets add up the sum 7+14+4 = 25. Now if he used 25 to represent the letter Y, this would produce Y17423,
entire license number plate of Paul Stine's taxi cab.
But again this is not the reason behind this article.
The Alphabet Murders (1965) was a film based on a novel by Agatha Christie called the The ABC Murders. So we shall call this approach, The XYZ Murders. There appears no apparent reason, that on the inside of the envelope, the author should write 'sorry no cipher
' twice, other than to create the form of a letter X. Along with this we now have the Y letter, as shown above, and underneath the strange symbol on the Halloween Card envelope is the letter Z. Combining these three letters in order to generate X,Y and Z.
Inside the Halloween Card at the foot of the card, the strange symbol appears again, he said 'sorry no cipher' twice, but being a master of deception, he gave us the XYZ cryptic message once more.
Ellery Queen was a pseudonym, just like Zodiac, used by Frederic Dannay and Manfred Bennington Lee, to author a long running collection of detective fiction, where a mystery writer and amateur detective embarks on a mission to solve some of the most cryptic and baffling cases thrown before him. Another American author of detective stories was John Dickson Carr
, who described the art of the classic whodunit as the 'grandest game in the world'.
Paul Avery was a San Francisco Chronicle reporter, who used amateur detective work to create a link between the Zodiac Killer and Cheri Jo Bates, murdered outside the Riverside City College Library on October 30th 1966. The Zodiac responded to this in his Los Angeles Times Letter on March 13th 1971, by begrudgingly stating ' I do have to give them credit for stumbling across my riverside activity, but they are only finding the easy ones, there are a hell of a lot more down there.'
What though influenced the X,Y and Z.
Three early novels written by Ellery Queen were called The Tragedy of X
(1931), The Tragedy of Y
(1932) and The Tragedy of Z
(1933), all employing the solving of crypyic clues, messages, mathematics and numbers in the fight against crime.
One of Ellery Queen's novels was the The Scarlet Letters
(1953), involving a cryptic alphabet clue. This novel features Dirk and Martha Lawrence, a couple with problems. Martha is arranging secret romantic meetings with an actor called Van Harrison. These meetings are scheduled by using innocent looking envelopes, that contained only a date, a time and a sequential number of the alphabet, not unlike the Halloween Card.
These letters continued throughout the alphabet until the letter W, by which time Dirk Lawrence had discovered his wife's adultery. He follows them back to Van Harrison's home where he shoots both of them. Martha Lawrence survives, but Van Harrison is killed. Just before he dies he writes an X and Y on the room wall in his own blood, the significance of which Ellery Queen must figure out.
On the Halloween Card, the reverse is in action, with the X and Y concealed from the observer, but the Z is very much apparent.
But the most relevant novel in the series regarding possible influences upon the Zodiac Killer, may have been The French Powder Mystery
(1930). In this novel the murder case falls into the hands of Inspector Richard Queen of the Homicide Squad and his mystery-writing son Ellery. A set of onyx bookends in the private apartments on the top of the store reveal not only bloodstains but grains of fingerprint powder and an unusual assortment of books. Also, an ashtray full of half-smoked cigarettes is an important clue. The suspects include the wealthy victim's family and friends, some employees of the store, and possible members of a drug ring.At the finale of the novel, Ellery Queen performs an extended piece of deduction by creating a list of conditions that the murderer must meet (involving, among other things, the possession of keys). He clears all suspects except one, whose identity is revealed in the last line of the novel
. Excerpt from Wikipedia
But what is interesting is the reference to a character in this novel called LAV
ERY, but more interesting than that, was that his full name was PAUL LAVERY, shown here
in part of the novels text in Google Books
. Another reference can be viewed here
This is interesting, as the Zodiac Killer is addressing Paul Avery in the Halloween Card and appears to underline the LAV in the reporters name.
Other novels include The Egyptian Cross
(1932) involving a blooded Tau Cross, Calendar of Crime
(1952), a series of short mysteries and Diamonds in Paradise
(1954), where a dying thief utters the words 'the earrings are in Paradise'.
Was the Northern California killer an avid reader of mystery crime novels from his childhood and beyond, that included Ellery Queen, Charlie Chan and The Most Dangerous Game, and shaped the very nature of the Zodiac Killer's communications that spanned virtually five years. This we may never know.
A list of Ellery Queen novels can be found here http://www.elleryqueen.us/novels.html
Take a long hard look over any card, letter or cipher and you get taken on a long journey into the mind of a serial killer, a journey that is personal, but one that is supposed to beguile the observer down a particular route, when in fact the answer lies right before your eyes. It has long been believed that the author of this deception was a master of misdirection, a man who leaves the window half open, but no window exists, a man callous in nature, but cunning in design, which is why we have all spent the last four decades and more searching for the key to unlock this mystery.
Like the magician who places a coin in his hand, we see the art of trickery and misdirection played out right in front of us, everything else from that point on is based purely on a false premise, but the trick is already over.
So what do we know of the Zodiac Killer, we think he had a knowledge of coding, was possibly from a military background, liked Gilbert and Sullivan's Mikado, had theatrical leanings towards film and the arts, although could not spell from one letter to the next, and that is the point, he was probably none of the above. He leaves the door open and as we pass through, a little more misdirection takes us further away from our true destination. What is more important, is what he doesn't say and what he understates, this is more than likely the true North and not the seventeen degree tangent he wants us to follow.
So lets take a trip down misdirection lane. We know the 340 Cipher is fake, due to the correction on line six
, why correct a fake cipher, therefore we know its genuine, so in fact its fake. The Zodiac was an egotist, even supposedly incorporating his name on the bottom line of the 340 Cipher, or so he would lead us to believe, he craved publicity, angered when his correspondence never hit the front page of the newspapers, but did he care, probably not, because he would just retreat to his make believe basement residence and design another bomb, while the intelligent people wore his buttons and played with radians.
Lets take a look at the Halloween Card, elaborate to say the least, with the distraction of dancing skeletons, pumpkins, eyes or moons transcending across the page and an over emphasis on symbols and the number fourteen, but more importantly, what is it, the author is not saying.
'In the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth', Apollo 8 launched on December 21st 1968, commemorated by the Halloween Card stamp
and 'sorry no cipher twice' all neatly tucked away in such an understated way, as to be overstated. Two keys in the Eureka Card said little, but spoke volumes as to where the mystery lay, but 'sorry no cipher' two times in the form of an X entices us to where the treasure lies.
The diagram to the right is from a previous post, using the egotistical assumption, the Zodiac was using his own moniker as the template or key. See zodiacciphers.com/the-340-key-to-888.html
The 888 is derived by counting numerically the difference between the letters in each column. This, then formed the basis of the 'My name is Cipher' five months later.
In Christian numerology 888 is the number representing Jesus and 666 is the number of the beast. Using Gematria
and Genesis as the template on the 'My Name is Cipher', shown here zodiacciphers.com/the-kane-cipher.html
the sign of the antichrist is revealed.
Another form of misdirection is at play here, but on a much grander scale of Genesis proportions, that the Zodiac Killer delivered his message from beyond the Earth, as the three astronauts delivered their 'Christmas Greetings Card' to the world from Apollo 8.
| |As they rounded the Moon for the ninth time, the second television transmission began. Borman introduced the crew, followed by each man giving his impression of the lunar surface and what it was like to be orbiting the Moon. Borman described it as being "a vast, lonely, forbidding expanse of nothing." Then, after talking about what they were flying over, Anders said that the crew had a message for all those on Earth. Each man on board read a section from the Biblical creation story from the Book of Genesis. Borman finished the broadcast by wishing a Merry Christmas to everyone on Earth. His message appeared to sum up the feelings that all three crewmen had from their vantage point in lunar orbit. Borman said, "And from the crew of Apollo 8, we close with good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas and God bless all of you - all of you on the good Earth." Courtesy of Wikipedia .
'In the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth', leaving the 340 Cipher to be signed off by either Jesus Christ or the Devil himself, disguised as the illiterate, theatrical egotist, tucked away in his cold basement formulating the eighth day of creation.
The day the world woke up on December 21st 1968, revealed the shocking news of the Lake Herman Road murders, and the yet to be fully understood realization that the genesis of a killer had emerged from the shadows.
So lets start at the beginning once more ...... a beginning where misdirection has captured the imagination of us all, and no matter how hard we try, we cannot move Heaven and Earth to change a thing.
'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God' and 'In the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth'. Genesis.
To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, was a hugely successful book published on July 11th 1960 and later adapted into a motion picture starring Gregory Peck two years later, portraying racial injustice and the innocence of youth from the backdrop of the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama.
This next section is not inferring the Zodiac drew any inspiration from this novel, but nevertheless outlines some unusual coincidences between this work of fiction to several cards and letters the Zodiac sent, predominantly the Halloween Card and the Eureka or American Greetings Card.
Kevin Robert Brooks noticed that the Exorcist Letter's strange symbolism at the foot of the letter could be rearranged to spell the words, 'To Kill'. These obviously are the first two words of this novel, but also the Exorcist Letter contained an extract from the Mikado about a bird, taken from Act II On a tree by a river, a little tom-tit in this case.
The SLA letter was sent on Valentines Day and the author suggested that SLA was an Old Norse word meaning kill , but it is not, the Old Norse for kill or slay is 'val'. The underlined section of Paul Averly on the envelope of the Halloween Card is 'lav'. This reversed is 'val', tying in nicely with the date, Valentines Day.
| |To Kill a Mockingbird was widely used as an educational tool in many schools, and one of the central characters was "Boo" Radley, a reclusive resident of Maycomb, who generated a constant source of suspicion and mystery from the local townsfolk despite his later acts of disguised benevolence. Note BOO on the Halloween Card. He went by the name Boo Radley, but curiously his first name was Arthur.
The LAV letters are again present together in the horizontal word SLAVES on the back of the card, but note the three letters at the intersection of the crossed PARADICE and SLAVES running down, they spell RAD,
The incorrect spelling of Paul Avery to Averly points towards LEY, to complete the character BOO RADLEY.
In fact, a local resident by the name of Stephanie Crawford reported she was woken up one night and saw Boo Radley "looking straight through the window at her..... said his head was like a skull lookin' at her".
On the tree around the knothole there are the words PEEK A BOO YOU ARE DOOMED.
The musical score to the original motion picture
was composed by Elmer Bernstein
and three of the tracks present were Creepy Caper / Peek-a-Boo
, Boo Who and Tree Treasure.
In the book, Tree Treasure was a hiding place in the knothole of a tree where several items were found including a broken pocket watch, aluminium knife and a ball of twine. These were placed there by Boo, for two local kids, Scout and Jem to discover. The knothole in the tree represented Boo's outlet to the world, with the kids soon realizing that Boo Radley was far from being a monster to be feared.
All the items he placed at intervals in the knothole came in pairs except the twine, there were two packets of chewing gum, two polished coins, two miniatures of children and the most interesting of all was a knife and pocket watch both on the same chain. Presumably two, so Jem and Scout could have one each.
Remember the Eureka Card or American Greetings Card
sent by Zodiac, very similar to the Halloween Card in its makeup, this correspondence included a photocopy of not one, but a pair of keys, on a chain. A gift from Zodiac or BOO, either way a mysterious character who never revealed himself.
Incidentally Scout and Jem construct a snowman in the novel, made initially from mud, then layered with snow, a theme many believe is inferring the racist overtones of the story, although its interpretation is subjective. A snowman was depicted on the Eureka Card, with what appeared to be Groucho Marx imagery on the face.
Jem and Scout built this snowman because of their dislike of a local resident down the street, but their father Atticus told the children to disguise it, because it so resembled the local resident they were poking fun at, so they placed Miss Maudie's hat on it. That resident they hated was called MR AVERY, now that is a coincidence, along with release date of the film December 25th 1962, in Los Angeles, California. Happy Holidays, anyway.
Gareth Penn proposed the Radian Theory to indicate how the Zodiac killer selected his crime locations, albeit slightly flawed, it was not without merit, as many theorists have proposed the idea that the Zodiac selected his victims based upon a specific geographical template, after all the author of the Button Letter on June 26th 1970 included a Phillips Road Map overlayed with the Zodiac crosshair symbol and the Bus Bomb Letter contained a crosshair, tagged with five X's on the circumference.
Also closely associated to the Radian Theory, is the thought that the Zodiac was may'be influenced by Pi, hence his choice of the word Zodiac as his moniker, and the crossed circle emblazoned on many of his postcards and letters.
Incidentally Pi is the ratio of a circles circumference to its diameter and valued at 3.14159265... or shortened to 3.14 for simplicity.
As described on many internet articles 3.1 4 15 9 26 can be displayed alphabetically as CADOIZ, which is an anagram of ZODIAC, but is there anything else, anywhere in the killers correspondence, to suggest other links to Pi as a possible factor which influenced the actions of Northern California's most elusive murderer.
The Zodiac seemed to grow attached to his crossed circle, this became apparent in the Halloween Card when he crossed the words PARADICE and SLAVES forming four quadrants, where he placed the words BY FIRE, BY GUN, BY KNIFE and BY ROPE.
The Halloween Card, of course, is a great source of ideas when theorizing about the Zodiac's intentions, as it has a multitude of variables, but without doubt he meant something to be understood from the card, it just depends on which theory you believe carries the most weight.
Well first, we shall examine the skeletons hand on the front of the card, it has three fingers raised and 14 written on the palm, therefore giving us 314, the first three numbers of pi.
Once the card is opened we see the text 4-TEEN. The Zodiac could have written 14 once more but chose to highlight a separation, why, well a teen is someone who reaches the age of 13. Now inserting this instead of the word TEEN we get 4-13, which is 314 in reverse, remembering the Zodiac often flipped his text apparent in the two postcards he supposedly authored either side of this one, in the 13 Hole Postcard and Pines Card.
There are 4 large eyes in the main body of the card and 13 in total, 314 in reverse.
Now take a look at the word BOO, could it conceivably be possible that the B is a 1 and 3 in close proximity, to form 314 in reverse with the four eyes underneath.
Then we have the strange symbol placed on the Halloween Card envelope and at the foot of the card once opened. This could be interpreted as ZVF, Zodiac Victims Fourteen or a host of other things. But lets take it as a numerical value. Firstly, the 4 dots as simply the number 4, then the rest as a joined 7 and F. With F being the 6th letter of the alphabet and the fact it is joined to the 7, we shall proceed with its sum total of 13, to form 413. We now have 314 in reverse yet again.
It dosen't stop there as we shall see. Many observers have speculated why the Zodiac chose to reverse the letter N, when he wrote BY KNIFE on the back of the Halloween Card. Well N is the 14th letter of the alphabet and immediately right of it, is the letter C, contained in the word DICE, and C is represented by 3 numerically to form 143, but of course the N is reversed, so we have to flip 14 to get 41, thereby creating 413 and pi in reverse once more. And the letter P is further to the right, part of the text BY ROPE, is it stretching a bit too far to believe this stands for pi.
The 4 quadrants of death, separated by the 13 letters of PARADICE and SLAVES could have been pointing us to the fact that Pi was the Zodiac symbol all along, but then again it could mean absolutely nothing.
Bearing in mind previous articles, the only high profile suspect with a birth date of 3.14 is Richard Gaikowski, who was born on 14th March 1936 and the Mikado, which featured in Zodiac's Little List Letter and the Exorcist Letter, first opened its doors to the paying public on March 14th 1885, and the inspiration for a cunning killer ?, we may never know.
The diagram on the right is simply arrived at by representing each symbol in the 'My Name is...cipher' with the alphabet, so effectively, the A and M line up in the first and last column.
A 14th column has been created, derived from the second column, after all, the Zodiac did state 'My name is....
The resulting figures are numerically the difference between the letters in each column, the circled 8 is taken as the letter
H, being the eighth letter in the alphabet and where a non-alphabetic symbol is positioned, no value is attributed.
This has been brought forward from the previous post http://www.zodiacciphers.com/1/post/2013/05/the-symmetry-of-the-13-symbol-cipher.html
The Halloween Card mailed on October 27th 1970 was interesting, as the Zodiac chose a card which had the lines ' I feel it in my bones, You ache to know my name, And so I'll clue you in '. Inside he added 8 eyes to the tree trunk, then the word 4- TEEN, followed by another 4 eyes. If indeed these were eyes, was he pointing us in a certain direction.
The ' My name is...cipher had 13 symbols, the Halloween Card had 13 eyes and both threatened to reveal his name, but this time he highlights the number 14 twice. Could this is a clue or key he was giving us to unlock the 13 symbol cipher. After all the card does not indicate 14 victims and the Halloween Card, like the 13 symbol cipher taunts us with his name and both cards have similarities in this respect, but both apparently failed to deliver anything of real value, possibly.
This is the thinking behind the addition of a fourteenth symbol on the examples below, to complete the word name on the April 20th 1970 cipher, and once done so, an extremely symmetric code of numbers are revealed.
Both the extreme six numbers either side of the cipher read 0, 3, 1, 1, 0, 3, with the middle four numbers of 5, 1, 5, 1, mirroring each other also.
The Halloween Card stated ' You ache to know my name ' and the 13 symbol cipher delivered the words 'My name is..'
The upper right diagram shows distinct numerical symmetry, we also have the figures 1031, in the green rectangle, the date of Halloween, positioned under MY NAME, although this is more than likely coincidence.
The emphasis of this card was 13 eyes and the number 14.
The 13th and 14th letters in the above diagrams are M and E, spelling ME.
Around the hole in the tree trunk he writes ' Peek a boo you are doomed ', with distinctly larger letters forming the ME part of doomed. With BOO on the main part and also next to the ME on the trunk.
The Zodiac killer added 8 eyes to the trunk and the 8th letter of the derived cipher above is M.
The Zodiac killer added 4-TEEN on the main body of the card, and on the front of the card and the 14th letter in the derived cipher above is E.
The Zodiac killer added 4 eyes to the main body of the card and the 4th letter of the derived cipher is the Zodiac symbol.
We now have ' I feel it in my bones, You ache to know my name, And so I'll clue you in '. Me, Zodiac.
After the 408 cipher, the Zodiac almost immediately mailed a letter to the San Francisco Examiner, dated August 4th 1969, in which he stated, ' By the way, are the police having a good time with the code? If not, tell them to cheer up; when they do crack it, they will have me '
Was the Zodiac poking fun at the authorities and law enforcement, because, indeed the Zodiac was telling the truth, the police did literally, have me. This is contained in deciphered text of the 408 cipher, as shown in the image on the right. The ME element was also part of yet another layer of undeciperable text within the original code, comprising of 18 letters. An area that has always posed more questions than answers.
The Exorcist Letter may have been derived from the 340 cipher.
In the top right image I have moved the two symbols on the extreme left of the Exorcist Letter to the right side as shown, without altering their position on the vertical axis. Then I have turned the extreme right symbol 90 degrees clockwise to form the new arrangement, shown in the bottom right image. We shall now compare it to the most interesting part of the 340 cipher, that is, the area where Zodiac appears to have corrected himself on line 6.
Five of the six symbols now show a noticeable similarity to this area of the 340 cipher.
If you then choose to continue you can then slide the > to the left, to slot in between the I and F, where it joins up to form the symbol seen on the Halloween Card.
We also are familiar with the FK symbol present on the 13 Hole Postcard.
So all of the three symbols from Exorcist Letter, Halloween Card and 13 Hole Postcard, could possibly have been derived from this portion of the 340 cipher. The blacked out symbol on line 6, may have been the reason for the elevation of the letter K in the Exorcist Letter.
It is possible the 340 is not a cipher, but merely an arrangement, he was using to spice up later correspondence, to see if people could find the connection within its design.
On the 14th line of the 340 cipher you find the letters BOO in reverse. This is what you would read on the Halloween Card effectively when closed.
| || |
Remember the 14 on the skeletons hand, this could signify the 14th line.
On the same 14th line is the ^
again, the logo he used on the Halloween card and envelope. The 4-TEEN may be indicating the fourteenth line.
The letters BY written four times on the Halloween Card as pointed out here
by Jos Kirps, all fall in each of four quadrants on the 340 cipher.
On the 13 Hole Postcard he displays a large crosshair and says 'its just one big thirteenth
'. The 13th line of the 340 cipher begins with a crosshair symbol. It also contains a circle, cross and triangle, the arrangement found at the Sierra club during the excavation of a possible burial site of Donna Lass, who vanished after her
shift at the Sahara Tahoe Hotel on September 6th 1970. The cross at the site was comprised of 13 stones.
The dubious Fairfield Letter, sent on December 16th 1969, came 5 weeks after the 340 cipher and Dripping Pen Card, in which he declared 7 victims and four days before the Melvin Belli letter on 20th December 1969, (stating a search for a 9th and 10th victim ), so have to presume 9 was relevant to the Fairfield Letter.
At the foot of the Fairfield Letter he depicts a knife, along with the wording, 'The Bleeding Knife of Zodiac'.
On the 9th line of the 340 cipher we find the letters B K OF Z present.
On the same 9th line, we also have the letters M and B. Is Melvin Belli a possibility.
This, so far, is a cursory theory, with the examples shown above, just that, and in all likelihood wrong, but it still remains plausible that the 340 cipher may be comprised of many codes, each unlocking a different mystery and not a natural code in its entirety, after all, if the most powerful computers and most eminent cipher breakers have failed to decode the 340, despite 44 years of toil and torment, it could be a fair assumption that the answer does not lie in simple lines of text, as portrayed within the 408 cipher.
The Zodiac killer crimes and astrology has always been believed to be credibly linked based upon key elements of his correspondence and the moon cycles during his attacks.
Here we will concentrate on the 13 moon calendar, based upon a cycle of 4 weeks, forming a 28 day cycle, ( it takes 28 days for the moon to orbit the earth ) over 13 moon phases to equal 364, the 365th being called 'the day out of time' and serves as a public holiday in some countries, but what has this got to do with the Zodiac killer.
It is believed the Zodiac committed his crimes on a full or new moon, but this was not always the case as July 4th 1969 or for that matter the following day of the Blue Rock Springs attack, as it occurred close to midnight, were neither a full or new moon, only a waning gibbous moon.
But something does correlate all four confirmed Zodiac attacks and that is they all occurred on DALI days ie: the 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd of each moon cycle, therefore the first day in each week of the 28 day cycle, represented by the crosshair Dali symbol. Visit here for calendar and explanation
. Leave this new window open on the calendar to enter the relevant dates.
There are 7 symbols of Dali, Seli, Gamma, Kali, Alpha, Limi and Silio for each day of one week.
So now we place the Zodiac crimes into place starting with the Lake Herman Road murders on December 20th 1968, which is 12/20, and this falls on the first day of the week on the Dali line in position 8 of the Rythmic Moon. The Blue Rock Springs attack on July 4th 1969, which is 7/4, falls on the first day of the week again on the Dali line once more in position 8 of the Cosmic Moon. The Lake Berryessa attack on September 27th 1969, which is 9/27, falls yet again on the first day of the week on the Dali line in position 8 of the Electric Moon.
( remember the three circled 8's of the 'My name is Letter ). Finally a deviation to the normal Zodiac crimes and the murder of taxi driver Paul Stine on October 11th 1969, which is 10/11, falls for the fourth time on the start of a week on the Dali line in the 22nd position of the Electric Moon.

Therefore all the confirmed Zodiac attacks are the beginning of the week on the 13 moon calendar, which if the mathematics are correct produces odds of 2401 to 1 which is pretty slim, and incidentally it has been widely observed that the Halloween Card was depicting 13 moons in a subtle way and not 13 eyes as commonly believed.
Continuing this observation to rule in or out any of the other Zodiac crimes means the Modesto abduction of Kathleen Johns, the Cheri Jo Bates murder, the Betsy Aardsma murder and the Domingos/Edwards murders would all be ruled out, but the Donna Lass disappearance on September 6th 1970 and the Hood/Garcia murders could still remain a possibility. Also the disappearance and eventual murder of Judith Hakari on March 7th 1970 and Nancy Bennallack on October 25th 1970 in Sacramento both fall on the first day of the week, as well as the Sleeping Bag Murders
sometime on the night of July 4th 1970, although these crimes are less often brought into the Zodiac circle.
The Dripping Pen Card and 340 cipher which contained numerous symbols of circles, partially or fully eclipsed was furthermore mailed to the San Francisco Chronicle on the first day of the week on the 13 moon calendar, along with nine attacks noted so far would make this a highly credible argument or one hell of a statistical coincidence.
As a footnote the Halloween Card was mailed on October 27th 1970 and depicted the moon and the earth on the envelope in the form of an Apollo 8 stamp.

It has been previously noted that the Zodiac killer possibly had an affinity towards Gilbert and Sullivan, Charlie Chan and The Most Dangerous Game, to name a few, along with a prevalence of linking the letters F and K in his ciphers and later correspondence and above all an utter contempt of the police, to whom he enjoyed taunting throughout. But here we will take the FK connection and expand it a little further. It may be wishful thinking, but I will run with it all the same.
Firstly note the 13 Hole Postcard, which is not unlike the Pines Card, where he suddenly has a fascination with placing his text upside down and theories that the FK I'm crackproof could be an expletive for f**k, but lets continue his obsession for goading the police and take the text in its upside down form with the K before the F and using simple substitution replace the K with I I, as it is eleventh alphabetically. Then we replace the F with 6 in similar fashion, to produce the number I I 6, we then flip the card upside down to produce 9 I I, which I shall for the sake of this hypothesis replace with police or pigs, the card then reads, 'There are reports city police pig cops are closeing in on me, pigs I'm crackproof, what is the price tag now.'
Now lets move on to the Halloween Card. As detailed in my last post
if you again flip the card upside down the fingers form the 9 I I symbol, coupled with the 14 drawn on the palm that now looks like hi, you get 'hi pigs I feel it in my bones, You ache to know my name, And so I'll clue you in'. And once the card is opened it reveals the text 'But then why spoil the game.Happy Halloween'.
It is then followed by a strange symbol and a Z (presumably Zodiac). This time we will take a different approach from the last post and take it as a 7, followed by 4 dots to equal 4 and the letter F. Seven plus four is I I which again represents the letter K, to read KF once more and therefore I I 6, which as above, upside down again reads 9 I I.
The card in its entirety now reads; 'hi pigs I feel it in my bones, You ache to know my name, And so I'll clue you in'. 'But then why spoil the game! .Happy Halloween ! pigs'. Zodiac.
Finally the Exorcist Letter and taking the symbols at the foot of the page to read 'To Kill', as detailed by Kevin Robert Brooks and described here: http://www.zodiacciphers.com/1/post/2012/09/the-breath-of-a-killer.html
, but adding one word.
It can be noted that two of the symbols again appear as a reversed K , similar to the 340 cipher and an slanted F, not unlike the Halloween Card and blended into the Mikado style writing. Again KF = I I 6, reversed to 9 I I makes the card read, 'If I do not see this note in your paper, I will do something nasty, which you know I'm capable of doing pigs, To Kill.'
Thereby linking the 911 number four times, through three cards in close succession, probably unlikely, but worth a thought nonetheless.
